Late post but the only thing I can think of that wouldn't have gotten him at least run out of town is if he had an affair, which if is the case then it would most likely be with Alphys since she had a crush on him in the first game. My first thought was maybe he wasn't really around for the kids or something but that doesn't really explain why Toriel seems to outright hate him.

That seems...not very Asgore-like. In UT, he's still pretty hung up over Toriel, and immediately wants her back after god-knows-how-long they've been apart. Since the characters seem to have the same or similar base personalities, I feel like Asgore still genuinely loves Toriel and his kids. We also don't know how long it's been since the split, though it seems to be somewhat recent.
