The good news is Valve is trying to fix things.
The bad news is that it's gonna be a loooooooooooooonnng haul. Plus if you subscribe to Tyler's pessimism, there's still a chance Valve will just give up completely and move on.

There's a lot more going on, mostly concerning social and progression features. Besides, they can't exactly make it "all cards are free" while the market still exists.
