TF2 General Chat and Speculation Station V14 - The Bargaining Stage

I'm kind of fascinated by the implications of them buying that egypt game, I want to see what comes of modern valve purchasing a narrative single player game and being involved in its development. Or indeed if anything comes of it at all, which says just as much about the company.
Blue Moon was just JI: Deleted Scenes.
The fantasy coop game was never a real game. It was a pitch that artist had but it never got actually developed at all. Those concepts actually became co-opted into artifact funnily enough.
guess they're gonna have to go free to play too soon
Free to play, but you have to buy your first set of cards.
I can't help but feel the schadenfreude

Scream Fortress was better back when Valve actually put effort into it. I sunk so many fucking hours into Ghost Fort and Helltower back in the day. Now that it's an excuse to release an update every year without Valve doing any work themselves, it's much less special.
Strictly speaking this has fuck-all to do with TF2, but Valve fucked up BADLY this morning. TL;DR: Valve accidentally added Artifact to the Valve Complete Pack for a few hours. Steam users could spam buying the Complete Pack, remove the game from their library (that's a thing?) and do it again.

Holy hell NewPunch is aggro with the embedding business. As one might expect, the Artifact subreddit went ballistic. Recap below:

I must admit that until today I was unaware that Valve were resisting making balance changes to Artifact cards in order to "protect their value." That is insane. Even by Valve standards. "Our game is pay-to-play and pay-to-win, and we don't want to balance it because you might stop paying."
This marks the only time that I might feel GLAD that Valve are ignoring TF2.
well, valve is using artifact's market as a guinea pig now just because they can make tf2 p2p again.
Why didn't you post an official reply? Because it makes pretty clear that all reddit drama is baseless?

to have that epic zinger
still though I am really wondering what route they will take with artifart oof
yeah this shit is nowhere near as bad as when you could dupe unusuals and open crates with random items and whatnot
Hopefully nothing.
Is it too optimistic to believe they'll actually do something sensible and work on their existing cash cows because they can't make new ones?
Because i feel like they'll just double down on VR because, NEW.
I honestly thought the game WAS f2p when it was comming out.
Would have actually tried it if it was
Free to play doesn’t always mean “cheaper”.
Exhibit A: Your empty wallet. Below is a link that lets you see your total amount spent on steam, without the annoying math of adding up all your wallet fundings in the account page.
Steam Help
But it isn’t all terrible. Several grand over a decade or so is how much Americans spend on things like cable and costumes for pets.
I agree that Scream Fortress is a fun event to have, but when that's all you get in over 400 days, that saps the event of any impact.
I wonder how feasible it would be if Valve implemented a War Paint functionality to call textures from Steam servers in the same way decal items do. In essence, calling a file on Valve's servers instead of from a local side like sprays or pre-determined textures in the VPKs.
Doing so would mean Valve could theoretically award incredibly unique war paints during specific events or distributing say, a competitive player with a war paint showing their main class' icon and their alias. Something that wouldn't be "mass-produced" in the general sense.
I've been playing vsh lately (on panda's which means no capping the point ever) and i have been wondering what custom gamemodes people here like.
Man, when community servers were a thing one of my favorite things used to be to go on late night treasure hunts trying to find fun mods/maps to play around in. Most of these are not played much anymore but some favorites of the top of my head:
Randomizer
Weaponizer
Stop the tank
Ballon race
Zombie fortress
Dodgeball
Surf
Deathrun
Jump
Fort wars
Prop hunt
Smash fortress
There was also a now defunct server called AXL TF2 that had some custom gamemodes, dunno if the source code was given for others to use when the server went down:
Soccer
Bring the intelligence into the opponents goal, special rules and weapon bans
Parachute
Both teams jumps down a ravine, everybody has the B.A.S.E jumper. Kill opponents to score points.
Shooting Gallery
Scout has infinite doublejumps, Snipers shoots them to score points
Hockey
Kill opponents on a slippery rink with automatic and erratic movement
---
There is also Machine Attacks, a 20+ campaign for MVM. It is basically one of those really ingenoius half-life mods that are really well made but story and grammar wise they are written by some insane russian that does not know a word of english.
I just realized that next week is update week, 100% confirmed given its the last week before crimbus, mental
I wonder if that reddit post had anything to it, I have roughly 2% hype in me and the only way Ill be disappointed if the only thing they completely skip it
if its an actual major update then hey maybe this year isnt that bad
see you next week, thursday
Well, back when Scream Fortress was actually good, it wasn't the only guaranteed update we got every year. The mere thought of a whole year going by without a major update didn't even come to mind back then.
VSH
Dodgeball
Prophunt
Fortwars
Super Zombie Fortress
Parkour Fortress
don't know if they count but rocket jumping maps
MGE
fortwars was the original fortnite
Fortwars is like Fortnite if Fortnite was fun up until you actually played
Building a fort is super fun, doing shit like setting the giant brown walls just right so you could trimp off them as demoknight, or creating quick stairs by layering pallets over eachother just right, but then you played the actual mode and it was... not great
well past few years it's been on the 21st. it's like the most consistant update each year we've had so far. I can't see us getting a major update out of it, but we'll most likely get a hat box and a war paint box as per usual.
Also if I may in regards to artifact discussions:

the ultimate duel.
Watch them forget to even ship a Smissmas case.
I’ll bet you two billion jermabucks that they miss it this year. No case, no nothing but tf_holiday enabled.
I'll bet you a trillion jermabucks there will be a substantial smissmas update
in january
I hear that V Bucks have a better conversion rate.
