The euphoric moment was probably any of the following: The reveal of the Spy part of the Sniper v. Spy update The climax of Meet the Medic Meet the Pyro finally being released like 5 years later Mann Vs. Machine reveal
https://i.imgur.com/dWfq9jL.png too bad it's dead presidents, but christ I figured "well I have a couple dollars in my steam wallet"
I was there for the MvM reveal and ARG- I wish the team still put so much care into new update releases...
I distinctly remember how fucking psyched I was when Meet the Medic was announced because it was news on G4 TV, the F2P aspect namely, I didn't even have a computer that could run TF2 and wouldn't for like, another month, and it was still so exciting. I genuinely can't think of any other game I spent so much time just looking up and reading about because I couldn't play it yet, except maybe Smash Ultimate. It helped that around that time Kitty0706 was actively uploading new Moments with Heavy videos, which to ~14-year-old me made G-Mod and TF2 look like gifts from God.
I was excited for the TF2F2P launch- my friends had been playing TF2 before then, and they all hopped into it right around then. Unfortunately, I was still a few years off from getting a PC that could play TF2, and even then "play" was a generous definition...25 FPS on maxframes...
For me, idk why, the height of it all was the engi update. It had a lot of mysticism around it, and the golden wrenches and shit. I'll never forget it.
Biggest disappointment in TF2 history HAD to be EOTL. That update was hyped up for MONTHS, only for it to be really underwhelming content wise.
For me it was Scream Fortresses 2 through 5. seeing all the new maps, bosses, cosmetics and mechanics introduced was a blast.
The WAR! update was pretty cool back then.
Yeah, that's just around the time I joined. I had tried TF2 for a bit and I really enjoyed the game itself, but having played just for a bit I bought it. I remember clearly entering the game with the old source-style menu, and the WAR! background. The first server I joined was playing ctf_wall, and my first drop within minutes was the sandman. Getting nostalgic here.
love and war felt like the last update made by the same tf team that started with the game
It's not a letdown because of that specifically (I'd say it's not even a "letdown", but it definitely wasn't a great update gameplay-wise), but Pyrovision and the introduction of the Balloonicorn were definitely not great. It was cool tech-wise that they could figure out how to make a cosmetic modify a map's appearance clientside, but... who gives a shit about "you can now see the first 6 maps in sparkly ugly low-fidelity versions! New weapon reskins that only you and other people with them specifically/new players wearing the pyrovision goggles can see!"?
Love & War was complete trash.
Either the devs or SPUF users got angry being killed by jump-revving Heavies and they decided to do something about it.
Demoman didn't really deserve nerfs either.
convince me you aren't saying this merely because you use him at times.
Demoman didn't deserve the nerfs he got in the update, just like the Heavy. The nerfs missed the reason why Demoman was and is so effective: he's supposed to be primarily a more defensive class, but higher skill levels change him into being the strongest class in the game because his pipes and stickies are so reliable. Something as minor as a slight damage nerf to his pipes would've probably been enough, but damage ramp-up with no in-game indicators is just kind of muddying and hard for somebody playing the game to even notice.
Demoman already had plenty of drawbacks baked into his core class design, namely a close-quarters vulnerability that makes Demoman analogous to zoner characters in fighting games. Like Heavy, Demoman's nerfs came about as a result of lower-skill players complaining on forums.
I remember when stickies got nerfed, people were unanimously pissed except comp demos comp demos were oddly fine with being nerfed
if we're still following the class menu's roles, the majority agrees pyro and demoman could be switched around.
Cause they know he's insanely powerful in the right hands, hence why he and Medic are the core of 6s teams and he and the Medic are the core combo of HL
HL combo is bigger than that and Demo isn't even the most important part of it (Sniper) (Sniper is the most important HL combo member)
Thanks for that interjection when none of us were talking about Sniper (who I've said before and I agree is the strongest part of HL teams, but he's not part of the combo)
don't know what highlander games you're playing where the sniper isn't attached to the medic full-time
Remember when they left the gate with a 50% damage reduction, to which entire servers became sentry havens because their biggest threat couldn't even take down a sentry or two while ubered with a good engineer manning it with the wrangler, short circuit, or a Pyro. Where the only respite was to use pills primarily for sentry destruction or swapping off demoman entirely. Then they reverted that and reduced his explosion radius by 50% instead which means if you can't aim you just do 0 damage. To which all good Demomen and sensible players agreed was a far superior approach. And to this day people say that Demomen bitched about being nerfed and reverted because they weren't actually there for the half-week of all public servers being turned into eternal stalemates and instead just want to shitpost about "salty demomains"
to be fair this is still very much the case however I get your post.
don't know what highlander games you're playing with Snipers are the classes ubered for pushes onto KOTH points and to push in 5cp
Sentries wouldn't be so much of a problem if spies weren't countered by simply looking.
combo sniper is literally the meta dude obviously you don't uber him for pushes, yeah, but that doesn't make him any less important for the combo's dominance, especially on KOTH and defense.
that's funny, I see people look at spies and they still get backstabbed
