I finally got around to making Malcolm and Ranger in SC6. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/caf280e3-b649-4414-a615-84336e06665f/20190102105901_1.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/3a1f6a81-242e-450f-b839-417e424baf1f/20190102104451_1.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBbAyiyyH_Q PB kinda fell off my radar but damn, they are really going all-in content-wise.
God I hate BD's player voicelines. It makes Doomguy less like Doomguy and more like some obnoxious Duke Nukem knockoff (I know it's mostly based on his comic version, but still).
I don't know if Dusk fever is still hot here but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1SfLvx7sKk
In case anyone else wants to check out some retro-style FPS and doesn't know what's out there, I made a pastebin listing the most notable ones, along with some information on which versions to get, what expansions there are, and what the best source ports are for modern systems. I'll try to update this semi-regularly. LINK: https://pastebin.com/pF7NiKXg I listed games from around 1992 to 2005, and also included modern games like Dusk, Amid Evil and Ion Maiden in a separate section. At the very bottom, there's also some good non-FPS retro PC games at the bottom, which were made at around the same time-period. If you've got any suggestions on anything I've missed, hit me up on Discord, so as not to clutter the thread.
Forgot to shill my work here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG_g_e0TSWQ
TrenchBroom is making progress toward Quake 3 map support: https://twitter.com/kristianduske/status/1080952286023696386
Speaking of which, I got Quake 3 on GOG in the summer sale and I like it.
Be sure to check out ioquake3
It may seem obvious to some but why would I use this over me what I've already got?
http://wiki.ioquake3.org/Players_Guide#Why_should_I_use_ioquake3_instead_of_id_software.27s_1.32c.3F
They use too many words and abbreviations I don't know so I don't want them putting a hex on my computer or something.
fwiw last time I used ioquake3 it gave my mouse mad stutters and occasionally dropped it and the game would run at like 50 fps even with fps capped to 125. Also fwiw its the only way to run the game for my friend who uses Linux. So if you ask me if the game runs fine as is then you don't need to bother with ioq3
Odd question but does anyone else get a tad motion sick at Dusk? Most I've ever gotten from other games is my stomach jumping up when I fall from a tall distance, and Tribes Ascend would often give me jelly legs (but with no motion sickness), it's odd
Is it the front- and backflips you can do? Some people I know get really sick from watching others play 6-DoF shooters like Descent, so that might be a factor. Maybe it's also the strange brand of pixelization it has, try turning that down in the options and see how it plays for you then.
Crank the FOV up to 110+ , disable headbob and the other related options, etc.
I've disabled both options but again, I can't play it for that long. It'll probably just boil down to me being tired whenever I've played it
As we start the new year, and with Doom just turning 25, I'm curious; When was the first time you played Doom? I was in grade school at the time, I gotta say around 6th or 7th grade so I must've been around 12 or so, and I was trying to find some action games for the GBA. I saw that this Doom game was on the GBA and it looked like a lot of fun. It played pretty damn well on the GBA with tons of control options, so I found a decent setup where I could turn with the D-pad and strafe with the R and L buttons, and switch weapons by holding B and pressing up and down. It was a long time later when I got my own crappy laptop (I was something of a console to PC convert starting primarily with Garry's Mod around the time I entered high school), and picked the game up again and rediscovered how much fun I had with the game, but it's still sorta what started my Doom obsession.
I must have been 6 at the time. I remember coming home from elementary school eager to play more Doom, and browsing around the Windows 95 PC we had in order to find more games to play. I also played a lot of random pwads that came with some sort of collection CD my father bought, using Doom95. At 8 or so I got Doom 64, which gave me nightmares due to the ambient soundtrack in addition to the fact that I couldn't use cheats to give me godmode. And at age 10 I remember downloading Doom 2 from some shady website filled with malware, thinking it was just another pwad. Imagine my amazement when I suddenly saw the first Revenant on map06. Shortly after that I found ZDaemon, which is around the time I came up with "Doomhunter" as a username. This was later extended to "Doom64hunter" at around the age of 12, when I switched over to Skulltag.
My dad let my play it for my birthday every year.
I was probably 4 or 5 when I first played Doom. Would of been the PlayStation release. I remember how fucking dark every level was and how annoying it was. (I do vaguely remember Doom on PC, but I don’t remember when I played or saw that version but do very much remember PS Doom)
I guess I'm sort of a newfag since I first played Doom 1 and 2 in mid 2010. Shortly after that I discovered Doom Builder 2 and got hooked on doom mapping and modding (Though never releasing anything, beside these two maps) Though I did know about Doom 3, and I did see my father play it back when it was released. I thought the predecessors were similar to that game so I never delved too much into it.
Probably like half a dozen years back when I was like 12 or something I was playing Mega Man 8 bit death match not knowing it was a doom mod running on skulltag and I accidentally loaded a doom CTF map while trying to play some skirmish I got pretty spooked seeing gore and blood all over the place and I genuinely thought it was part of the mod and I found some messed up secret map After that i got Freedoom 2 and played the first level over and over because I couldn't find a way to save or use console command to skip levels
I was like 5 or 6 and I played it with my dad, who was operating the movement keys and mouse, with me on the open and fire buttons. It was great.

First time I played Doom I would probably been 5 or 6 playing it on the playstation. I of course was not allowed to play shooting games, but the memory sticks with me a bit. I think when I was a little older I played through much more of it. I got stuck on one of the last Doom 1 levels, which I now know to be E3M5. I had started and stopped Doom 3 several times, obviously quitting out of fear (around the same time I never moved past Ravenholm in HL2). Eventually in high school in 2010 I had my own PC and money, and I got a huge retro fps boner and bought the classic Doom and Quakes on Steam and played them all. Something I'm missing about older linear games is a sense of progress through the environment. Like in HL2, all the chapters have a fairly distinct feel from each other, same with HL1. Doom and Quake do the same thing. I'm finding now that in newer games I don't really get that. Even the Mario games generally take through a bunch of distinct world's with their own challenges, Metroid as well. A Super Metroid / Doom hybrid would be pretty cool I feel.
My grandpa was big into computers as he worked in the computer industry in the 70's and 80's and he's what got me into computer games. He had Doom, Duke Nukem, Warcraft 2, Everquest and a couple other games. But yeah, he got me into games when I was 5 or 6.
On my Quake 1 playthrough right now. As always, it was fun fighting through all the episodes for the enjoyment of telefragging Shub-Niggurath. But this time I gave DOPA a shot. I really like how MachineGames went from mostly laidback starter levels to very intense last ones, it sure got me by surprise when I got my ass handed couple of times near the end. The final battle with two Shamblers was really tense as there was almost no ammo and not much space to maneuver. Also, I've done Scourge of Armagon and I should say, I am VERY disappointed at how weak Armagon is. Couple of laser bolts and a bit of circling and he's dead. What the fuck, Ritual? Hopefully Dragon in Dissolution of Eternity will give me a good fight as I'm getting pretty close to the last level.
I played it at a cousins house with a joystick when I was around 6 or 7. It was in like 1995 or such so DOOM wasn't brand new anymore, but my cousin told me it was the coolest game ever. I think I managed to complete the first level, then my mom realized what I was playing and made me quit.
