"Retro" PC Games Megathread v9 - From Dusk Till Doom

Man I kind of wish they didn't cut the stock off the SSG in 2016 and Eternal. Looks way better w/ it IMO.
Plus there's more room for iconography and engravings.
I can’t believe it.
One of the first custom maps I’ve ever played (other than the notorious nuts.wad) was The City Of The Damned – Apocalypse.
Exploring that incredibly atmospheric map made me realize how great the engine was and how much you could achieve with some imagination. A fellow friend of mine, Duke_Nume (which you might remember as the maker of some Golden Souls 1 guest maps) taught me the basics of Doom Builder 2.
After that, I’ve made a couple of maps and tried to make a megawad called “Gore”, it was inspired by Tormentor667’s maps and Happy Time Circus. I had plenty of ideas
but the end result was not very good, so I ended up abandoning it.
In 2011, Duke asked me if I wanted to join him for a project called Serious Sam: The Retro Encounter, a TC based on Croteam’s glorious franchise. After months of work we made a complete multiplayer experience, with the plan of adding single player maps later after completing all the assets, but the first release was met with mixed results, and we quickly lost interest.
Serious Sam 3 released in 2011,and because of the hype for that game I’ve decided to pick up the project again and remake it from scratch. Duke wasn’t in the team
anymore as an active developer but he still helped by giving me advice and playtesting everything.
I’ve continued working on this remake for two years, and then since I was getting pretty slow at mapping I decided to work on something else to blow off some steam, so I came up with the idea of a bright, cheery mapset inspired by a previous test map I made which was set in an Aztec garden and had a relaxing purple-pinkish sky.
The mapset would be known as Golden Souls a couple of months later, and was announced in 2013 after New Year’s Eve. The idea of having a hub was, curiously, not directly inspired by Mario 64, but by another mod I was playing at that time, Unloved. I really appreciated how BlueEagle managed to capture this feeling of exploring an interconnected world, and I really wanted to make something similar
to that, but with a totally different theme, and so Mario’s paintings came to mind.
Back when I first started playing Doom mods in 2010, I couldn’t even think of winning a Cacoward, and here we go, 8 years later. I really want to thank everyone who helped me
in all these years, it’s been a wonderful journey and I hope to continue making content for this incredible community.
More Quake 1 maps! This time to celebrate Doom's 25th birthday, 9 maps made with Doom textures. [Link]

Romero made his announcement

Looks like Doom64hunter called it
The fan boxes feature music by metal guitar legend Buckethead, including a custom song written expressly for SIGIL
OH SHIT
he free megawad does not ship with Buckethead’s music
damn...
I get the feeling theres gonna be like 2 copies made and it'll instantly sell out and I won't get to support doom buckethead and romero all at the same time
Also trailer is out and it seems like Buckethead's music will actually be played during the levels. This is awesome.

Hell yeah.
All this Doom stuff on Doom's 25th birthday from both old and new Id crew.
Small but nonetheless heartwarming recognition of Unreal 20th birthday from Epic.
Meanwhile Half life gets jack shit from Valve.
Join the Slayers Club to receive an exclusive Zombie DOOM Slayer skin for DOOM Eternal
Hmm
Does this make Doom: Repercussions of Evil canon now?
so much cool stuff coming out right now
holy shit
So we're getting a more conventional multiplayer mode along with the demon invasion stuff. Neat.
And of course you can only claim it through the Bethesda Launcher. Which means i'm not buying Doom Eternal until the exclusivity to their launcher fades (if ever, though FO76 took like two weeks so eh), and i'm not getting this skin.
Fuck you Bethesda / ZeniMax.
Zombie Doom Slayer confirms campaign skins which means classic coloured Doom Slayer is a total possibility.
Huh? It's still exclusive.
I thought I saw it on the steam store, but if not then that's even worse. I don't want to have Doom Eternal stranded on their launcher for months, perhaps even a solid year or permanently.
they're going to put Doom Eternal on their shitty launcher and then wonder why everyone will pirate it
There's nothing wrong with their launcher.
Personally, I'll probably be able to deal with the launcher (though it helps that I have already made an account for Quake Champions). However, not launching DOOM Eternal (and, by extension, RAGE 2 especially) on Steam is a terrible idea just by its reputation alone.
The issue is the recent data leak they had. A glaring mistake like that does not inspire confidence.
That, and how unfathomable terrible it was during Quake Champions' and Fallout 76's beta leaving a bad taste in people's mouth, and the general public wishing to keep their collection mostly allocated to Steam, and maybe other things I'm missing.
Yeah, but that was the website, probably different dev teams.
Defend the launcher if you want, I want my games consolidated in one firm place without excess bloat on my computer, and i'd rather have DOOM Eternal be in my Steam library personally alongside every single other Doom and other Id title I own on there rather than isolated as that sole exception to Bethesda's launcher.
Or just buy it from a key site, that way Beth won't have your credit card info.
What a strange thing from Bethesda to defend. It's hardly bloat, yet you choose to keep it closed and launch 76 through Steam instead. Wouldn't it be better to just save the ~200mb of harddrive space and have 76 update through Steam?
The launcher is nothing but a resource hog. No friends list, the tabs up top are just links that your web browser opens, hell you can't even buy a game from the launcher without it opening up your browser. That's not really a problem, but it somehow manages to use up more ram than any game launcher I've tried. Bethesda Launcher, with almost zero features other than web browser links and the ability to launch games, uses more ram than Steam's 10+ years of feature creep.
FO76 probably doesn't require it cause you need to login on the title screen to play, we still don't know if Doom will need it or not.
