Looking to pick up as many retro style shooters as I can. Amid Evil, Ion Maiden, Blood, Hexen, Heretic, Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein 3D (maybe), Quake 2 are at the top of my list. Any others that are highly recommended?
Dusk. Original Quake needs to be higher up the list.
Already picked up both a while back, sorry for not specifying.
I'd suggest Strife.
Do you have Unreal Gold and UT99 already?
Pretty weird that Unreal, UT99 and UT2004 arent on sale on Steam, so if youre going to pick it up go for the GOG version Even when its not on sale the base price is lower compared to Steam at least for me so there's that
Oh, and Descent 1/2/3 if you don't have those and like 6DoF shooters (And Overload since that's basically Descent 4)
Try the Marathon Trilogy, it's freeware and can be played with the Aleph One source port.
PainKiller Black edition The Serious Sam series
If you are going for Quake series, go for GOG ones instead. They have a soundtrack included compared to Steam version.Quake 1 has em in disk images (get the CUE patch from PCGamingWiki) the 2nd one in OGG format.
Rise of the Triad (original and remake) are also good ones. I should probably create a list of these in the OP so people won't have to ask anymore. Oh yeah Blood's AI is a bit fucked in that regard, Cerberus loves to do pirouettes in the lava for some reason. I think it used to work correctly in v1.02, but with the expansion something broke.
Be warned: As of a certain release of RoTT, it is broken on certain graphics cards and will lag drastically more than any prior release. Also, get Painkiller and Serious Sam ASAP.
I remember back then the Unreal games being rarely on sale. Now with Epic trying to push their launcher I doubt we will see them on sale.
Isn't Blood getting an updated release by the dude that did the Powerslave EX one?
Yup. Kaiser really knows how to reverse-engineer these type of games. Though he is using his own Kex engine as the main backbone.
man, DUSK really really likes it's verticality and i was not expecting that ending or that voice
Someone is making a source port of Quake 2 which will make use of Vulkan API. Link
Awesome, hopefully it's going to be a stable sourceport, as every single one of the sourceports today seem to crash on windows 10
Funny, the Vulkan renderer doesn't seem to be working for me in that source port. Still gonna keep it around, though.
Exciting news, people, and it's the best Christmas present we could have asked for: Blood is coming back! https://forums.duke4.net/topic/10377-nblood-blood-port-running-on-eduke32-engine/ NukeYKT is, among several things, the author of the OPL3 emulator now used in Chocolate Doom and GZDoom and, of course, the recently released Rednukem, by far the definitive way to play the Redneck Rampage series on modern machines.
Hopefully this will pacify the people over at Duke4 who were mad over BloodEX not being a true source port
Merry christmas you crazy motherfuckers. Here's a gift for the masochists enjoying Duskmare, but still not having enough: How about we disable infighting entirely? Duskmas, the mod
A friend got me Project Warlock for Christmas and I'm enjoying it.
http://richwhitehouse.com/index.php?postid=72 Noesis now includes a Roomba script. It will track your Roomba, store tracking data, allow you to visualize that data in a variety of ways, and, of course, turn that data into a randomized DOOM map. http://richwhitehouse.com/images/doomba/doombaprocess.png As a bonus, there's an "Image to NoeRoomba" tool that's only enabled when you set ENABLE_TEST_FUNCTIONS to True in tool_roomba.py. This allows you to generate .noeroomba files from plain image files, which gives you a pretty effective "image to random DOOM map" path. I can't promise my unholy algorithms targeted at Roomba maps won't fall over if you start throwing all kinds of random crap at them, but with the images I've tried, things hold up pretty well http://richwhitehouse.com/images/doomba/mkmap.png
God I hate the fact Bethesda owns Doom. Then again, it's not like any other AAA company is much better. Just makes me vom a little every time I see Doomguy next to Vault Boy.
At least DOOM 2016 is fantastic, and I imagine DOOM Eternal will be no less awesome
I fear with the shit that's happened around Fallout 76, that some of it's practices might leak into the next Doom game as well. And yes, I know Id is developing the game, but Bethesda is still the publisher. Let's not forget their awful marketing of promoting Doom 2016's multiplayer mode instead of the singleplayer (Which Doom is most known for) before the release. The game was saved mostly by word-of-mouth to others about how great singleplayer is.
It's Bethesda, you idiot. Nothing they made is good, and that includes DOOM 2016. You only think it's good because you Asperger's marred brain has convinced itself that the shit it plays is good no matter what. I hope you and all of your ilk (and Bethesda too) are given free helicopter rides so I don't have to listen to the dreck that comes out of your mouth!
Holy shit lmao
Doom's multiplayer was a HUGE draw back in the day with many a late night LAN party of constant deathmatches. It's only in the later years that it's singleplayer content been just as, if not more, appreciated. Probably as a response to corridor shooters pervading the genre. Them focusing on the multiplayer only doesn't make sense in hindsight of the multiplayer beta.
