Oh yeah, you're right. Forgot about the DWANGO days. I keep associating the Id's multiplayer success more with Quake than Doom. But yeah like you said, Doom's multiplayer popularity was prevalent from the beginning. Quake just amped it up with it's own rules.
Merry christmas, have a dev diary of stuff I've been working on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX4MgEjsTvQ&feature=youtu.be
holy shit it bends
Personally, I'm not worried about Bethesda/Zenimax meddling with DOOM Eternal. Probably at most they won't put it on Steam which will only serve as a minor annoyance and won't really affect the game itself all that much. Also, I don't know much about how Zenimax dictates Bethesda's actions and how they do so with their own studios and so on and so forth, but I read that Pete Hines has said that Bethesda's management don't give their studios mandates, though he didn't go very in-depth with that topic. I don't know how truthful that is, since Pete Hines isn't exactly very truthful himself, but it would explain the sheer incompetency associated with BGS's products and the levels of quality and polish that their games lack compared to their sister studios.
Haven't heard of this 'til now. It seems to have very positive reviews. Anyone want to give me a quick rundown of the game?
Shooter on a 2D Plane like W3d but without the annoying ass hitscanners. I have to wait for the Dusk effect to wear off because whenever I play it I keep thinking "I could be running Duskmare again" instead of having fun.
Having not played Dusk, and so not having the spectre of it hanging over everything, I'm enjoying it. It's a very standard retro-alike FPS, aping the earlier entries in the genre (more akin to Wolfenstein and Doom than later offerings like Quake), but with some neat little wrinkles like a weapon upgrade system and RPG like stats/perks that you improve back at your workshop (the hub you go to between sets of levels).
Just got the B.J. action figure. Wish Bethesda would've made an entire figure line.
I played through Project Warlock and I think I left a review here somewhere... let me fetch it On the looks side of things, I have to admit that some of it are a strong hit, others are really missing. The enemies sprites are clear and awesome, but the environmental sprites are pretty bad in general. However, the biggest crime the game commits is the lighting system. See, I don't know where the dev thought that the old FPS games were dark and spooky - but they were never dark enough to force you to use an external source of light. There was clear lighting that showed you the way. In Project Warlock, you're forced to use a light spell, and you can't use your guns. Think of it as Doom 3 - but unlike Doom 3, enemies aren't slow and stupid, and the levels aren't maze-like. So you end up in a situation where everywhere you can't see anything, and if you decide to see something, you can't fire back, and when you fight, you don't get to see the fun parts, like gibs or damage. I think one of the worst levels for this was literally a desert stage, where you're outside and it's pitch black anyways. Some levels are okay with it, but some levels are in pitch blackness the entire time! WTF? On the gameplay, it's pretty damn fun when everything is lined up. There's a lot of weapons, but often you'll only gravitate toward those who are clearly superior, unless you grab sidegrades that gives you an added advantage. I didn't use the magic system because honestly, it's... not necessary at all beyond the light spell because YOU CAN'T SEE ANYTHING without it sometimes. The only weapon I feel are bad are the melee ones (but muh Hexen) and the staff (but muh heretic) , because honestly going into melee against a group of enemies is hardly ever a good idea, and the staff is just not as good as the weapons you get eventually.
So, here's an idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5lK6cGmPrc
Also remember, Doom 2016's MP wasn't made by id. No idea if Doom Eternal's will be.
IIRC, it's been said the multiplayer is being developed in-house by id.
Even with its flaws, I still enjoyed Doom 2016's Multiplayer. I am greatly looking forward to what id themselves can do. I wanted to thank everyone here for giving me recommendations for games. I managed to pick up the majority of suggested titles: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/402879700243972102/527286597138251777/steamsaleshooters.JPG (Plus Shadow Warrior Classic) I will try to pick up the others next time around. Everyone who chimed in with recommendations has been given a diamond. I appreciate your input, and hope you all have a happy holidays!
Bethesda has only recently been "shit" after Fallout 76 before then they were the saints for everybody. I would say Bethesda Game Studios is the one more incompetent in terms of their franchises.
Bethesda and Zenimax have been copping shit for bad design and dishonesty since at least Fallout 3. It has only increased with 76 and effectively become a more acceptable opinion among ultrafans.
Even still you're forgetting that Doom, Dishonored, Wolfenstein, etc are all great titles.
That's pretty irrelevant to what you said, though. Bethesda also made none of the games, only published them.
That's...exactly what is said? Bethesda games is incompetent, no other part of the company is. F76 was the tipping point
tfw can't legally acquire Hexen or Heretic or Quake 2 because Germany
I know it sounds weird but I don't give a shit. I like the idea of the Doomguy having a pet rabbit. It shows that despite his monstrous aggression, he's still better than the demons because he's lucid enough to be a caregiver.

After playing a bit more Dusk, there's one thing I don't really like and that's the secret levels. Overall they're not really very special or interesting and aren't particularly good. They feel more like levels that were going to be cut but were thrown in anyway. Given some of the mechanics and elements that get thrown in later in the game I was kind of expecting the secret levels to be more like the first secret level in Quake and being a bit more "out there".
Seeing how much things didn't get thrown away during development, just reworked and replaced, that's quite possible actually.
i wouldn't have minded seeing more swampy areas like there were briefly in E1MS "The Dim Slough". E2MS remains one of my favorite levels though, "The Foundry". haven't seen E3MS yet. i agree they could've been a bit more off the wall and out there though
The Foundry was probably the best one simply because it had a bit of a focus on movement options, but even then it didn't really go very far with that idea and there wasn't that much else going on in the level. E3MS ('The Ratacombs') is definitely the worst though. It has a boring layout, boring enemy encounters (guess which enemy exclusively fills 'The Ratacombs'?) and is very short. The only thing I liked about it was one of the secret locations.
Is Dusk worth getting if I'm a Quake I junkie?
there may not be a lightning gun, but you'll also somewhat get your heretic and hexen fix
There is no lock on the Y axis so you can do backflips so, yes it is worth it
I actually find it extremely irritating when swimming upwards, and I haven't found an instance yet where this feature came in useful.
I just turned off the flipping and shit cause the rolls screwed me and wonky controls kept fucking with my head. Also the going upside down and shit looked awful even in the trailers imo lol I still think the real highlight of Dusk is the aesthetics in ep 1 and 3, and the gameplay is just kinda alright and not as remarkably good or fun as Quake or most other notable 90's shooters
