Glad to see they rather start over with Retro Studios than just cancel the game or release a mediocre game.
While it sucks it's getting restarted, it's nice that they told us rather than leaving us in the dark about it. Have there actually been any other times they've been public about somthing like this?
Not during current development, I don´t think.
Why couldn't they have done this with Star Fox Zero
Glad that the game isn’t getting canned.
So it wasn’t Retro Studios at first. I’m still curios what exactly have they been developing.
I think it's because they realized how much fans care about the franchise during that federation force / total silence era. They do not want to make that mistake again and want to be crystal clear with the fans.
Personally, i'm happy with this decision, i'm willing to wait a bit more to have a great sequel instead of a forgettable/mediocre/bad one, and on the bright side, when the final product will release we'll probably have tons of analysis videos regarding scrapped or unused content, since i'm expecting some assets and concept to stay in the new iteration and it will be pretty interesting.
Just give us a Trilogy rerelease on Switch and I'll be able to keep myself occupied until it releases
Guys, do remember that the original team behind the Prime Trilogy is no longer at Retro. They left after Corruption to form Armature Studios (a studio that has a nasty habit of being fucked over by Kenji Inafune sadly).
The Metroid Prime we'll be getting from this Retro will be a completely different beast than the games we got by the original creators.
As for why it's now coming back to Retro, and wasn't with Retro before, I'm going to indulge in some shitty theories to answer this.
I'll assume it's because Retro was actually at one point working on its own IP like what we've seen rumored for years. However, development on this IP probably died off, which resulted in the even more recent rumors of Retro potentially preparing to shut down. At around the same time, development on Prime 4 with Bamco Singapore (if rumors are to be believed) wasn't going favorably for Nintendo, so Nintendo decided to scrap the work they did and find a new studio. Retro, with no IP to work on and in fact no game to work on, were approached by Nintendo again and this time agreed.
If the Retro Studio team is the one behind DKC Tropical Freeze, we in good hand unless they were the Prime team.
I am quite curious though, that the restarting of MP4 meant that a Nintendo direct got cancelled because of it.
Yeah I came here just to post this. It makes a exciting headline but Retro has changed and it's entirely new folks. It's hopefully going to be better but don't be surprised if a lot of it is different than whatever you're painting in your head.
It would be like Microsoft saying that Rare is finally making Banjo Threeie.
Happy it's getting reworked though if it really was that dire.
Is current Retro Studios not the same people who made Tropical Freeze, a masterclass in both visuals and gameplay?
No idea how much of the DK teams are still there (I know some have left over the years to join other studios). All I know is pretty much the entire team behind the Prime trilogy is not there anymore, with most of the leads being at Armature Studios.
Here's a question I do have though. We knew for about a year or two now that Alexander Brandon (composer of Unreal/UT/Deus Ex fame) had joined Retro to work on something with them. Given the original Metroid composer, Kenji Yamamoto, is more than likely still composing the soundtrack for Metroid Prime 4 as was announced originally, does that mean Alexander is still at Retro, or is he flying solo again?
I would assume Alexander was on board to compose the soundtrack for the original IP Retro was supposedly working on, but with that being potentially canned, I'm going to assume that may have resulted in his departure as well.
Really though, I do hope we get answers to these following questions in time.
Who was the original development studio that was working on Metroid Prime 4?
What game was Retro Studios originally working on before taking over for Metroid Prime 4?

There's a pretty big rumor gaining steam that Nintendo plans on ditching the Directs.
It really fucking sucks if that winds up being true :/
So is current Retro Studios anything like the studio that made MP Trilogy 17-12 years ago?
I know Tropical Freeze was excellent, but I'm still wondering
and where are the rumours sourced at?
The rumour is based on this sombre MP4 development update being sent out on its own with no direct, even though it'd probably be the worst idea imaginable.
They wouldn't talk about MP4 restarting in a direct because it'd probably deflate the whole thing when people have waited so long for anything about the game. They just wanted to be transparent and get the word out immediately so people know what to expect: MP4 won't be in the next direct.
The same source also states that a port of the Metroid Prime Trilogy has been completed and was supposed to have been announced last month.
I don't really have a solid source. Just the few discord servers I've seen have been talking about it for a couple days now here and there and one even said "there's a big announcement concerning MP4 coming out soon"
It's the only reason I brought it up because well, big MP4 news *did* just happen.
I haven't heard anything from my connections of a direct cancelation yet. Although that can change but I'll bring it to my friends for investigation.
i rly wanna see a photorealistic metroid prime 4. i feel like every metroid game has tried to be as close to photorealistic as possible on their respective hardware, but with the absence of metroid for as many years the only kinds of games we've seen out of nintendo have all been heavily stylized in some way. i wanna see what nintendo does with making a photorealistic game on the nintendo switch in 2019 (or 2020 or 2022 or whatever)
This.
The presentation might make one think "well why isn't this in a Direct", but do you REALLY want to deliver bad news alongside a bunch of announcements people are meant to get excited over? There should be no "bitter" in a Nintendo Direct, only sweet. Nintendo Directs are long-form commercials, so the last thing you want is someone watching your commercial and saying "I can't wait for Animal Crossing! But it really sucks about how-", nope, no "but", only hype.
I honestly think the MP4 announcement is good news in a sense, since we're getting a better product at the end of it all, but you DEFINITELY don't want to combine something with this somber a tone with announcements meant to inspire cash-spending joy.
Announcing this during a direct is like taking a kid to an amusement park before telling them their pet died or something.
Why the fuck would someone want this to be announced in a Direct???
As much as I appreciate Nintendo being transparent about Prime 4, it'd also be nice if they gave us some good news too. Starting the year off with the announcement of delaying a game just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I really hope we get a direct soon.
I don't think people want MP4 to be cancelled and restarted in a Direct. I think they wanted another Direct sooner and will use any scrap of noteworthy news to justify it because they assume that if they get a Direct Nintendo will announce a TTYD HD port and that Banjo is confirmed for Smash or something.
Hopefully they announce the Prime Trilogy port soon, assuming that rumour was accurate.
God fucking damnit.
I sent my Joy-cons in for repair two weeks ago, got them back yesterday all repaired.
Only one Joy-con had the actual problem solved, yet the other two are still broken in the same way, and one of them has drifting now.
All I want is for my character not to walk slowly when I am pressing it all the way in a direction, and for him not to stop dead in his track all the god damn time.
Is that too much to ask for?
Now it's a long weekend, I'll have to send the Joy-Cons off on Tuesday, meaning I'll be without them again for another 2 fucking weeks just so they can fix it.
I am honestly tempted to just buy replacement Joy-cons, it's only 2 left joy-cons.
