I hope Agni and Rudra come back and he let's them talk this time.
So I think today I'm going to finish Devil May Cry 3 and I need a pointer.
I'm told that finishing the game unlocks a mode where you play as Vergil. As interesting as that may be, I'm also told that I'd had to basically play the same game all over again with little to no extra cutscenes to flesh out Vergil's side of the story.
Is this true? Because if it is, then I'll save my self some time and go straight to Devil May Cry 4
Vergil has a new intro video but otherwise he just replaces Dante as the player character and all cutscenes are skipped.

As advised, I skipped the Vergil playthrought and the Bloody Palace Mode altogether (I'm kinda in a hurry to catch up and, regardless of quality, pure challenge modes in videogames never quite struck my fancy).
The game was as good as you claim. The boss fights and Vergil (sometimes both at the same time) were my personal highlights, but it was a general wild ride all the way to the ending.
I know that, at this point, I should really stop caring so much about the series' continuity and whatnot, but if Devil May Cry 3 really is the first game in the canonical chronological order, then Dante lacks of any kind of reaction towards Eva's pendants and the Nelo Angelo reveal are all the more jarring.
Lady best DmC waifu, by the way.
Onto Devil May Cry 4, then
>DmC waifu

By the way guys, the OP is missing a game

Now that I'm playing the Devil May Cry series proper, I can finally see that Oogie's Revenge was basically DMC-light with rythm game elements and a special taunt system
bloody palace is now out

If I have to be completely honest, I preferred this one over Dante's Awakening. Sure, Nero could had been fleshed out a lot more and the second half of the game is basically you backtracking as Dante till you hit the final boss fight, but I liked the new setting and enemies-characters-bossed design a great deal, the Devil Bringer was the most fun I had in all four games and once you hit Dante's cutscenes things really go full-wild. I mean ...

Also, Lady's makeover was, in my humble opinion, completely unnecessary, but oh well.
This is it, guys: given I decided to skip the Bloody Palace once again, on top of the other characters' playthroughts, the way towards Devil may Cry 5 is finally opened to me
I mean, you're not missing tons if you skip Bloody Palace. It's just a really satisfying challenge mode. And most of the alternate character runs are just the same game again with new move sets. Not at all required to get the DMC experience.
Though 4: SEs alternate characters are definitely worth playing if you go back to it.
Though weirdly I do agree with this, despite thinking DMC 3 was the best of the bunch for years I've come to appreciate just how much more polished 4 is, and how much more variety just having Nero brought to the game. Even if 4 has the incredibly weak backtracked second half, the gameplay itself is consistently great.
If 4: Special Edition at least put some sort of effort in to fix the second half of the game, it would've basically made 4 the best game in the series with no competition until 5 over a decade later.
Devil May Cry 5 is already blowing me away, both in the graphical and gameplay department.
I only have some minor gameplay nitpicks. For instance, I love V both as a character and as a playable demonologist, but the fact his play style relays on summoning demons to attack and then come in and finish the job himself (with the delays to match) makes him a little harder to get used to. Also, I can't fathom what's the added gameplay value of having Nero's Devil Bringer downright breaking after taking damage and whatnot, especially since you must recover each by paying the in-game currency and you automatically equip the ones you find around the levels, which gets kinda annoying.
On a very side note, and I know I won't make more friends with this, I hate the shit out of Nico. Even considering the series' standards when it comes to characters. I hate her ridicolous, over the top outfit. I hate her constant, perpetual stoner facial expressions. I hate her sassy black woman antics.
She's like Borderlands 2's Tiny Tina, but without any saving graces whatsoever
semi-important detail, if you haven't picked it up from files and context clues, nico is the daughter of agnus the mad scientist from 4. i feel like that helps set up her character a lot, especially her partnership with nero
The whole Nico and Agnus thing is so shoehorned that even Nico herself says their connection doesn't matter since he left her and her mom when she was a baby.
Was there even a reference to Ebony and Ivory's creator and Agnus in DMC4?
It was a pretty hard retcon of sorts if I recall, that is pretty much only introduced in the DMC V prequel novel and DMC V itself.
Ebony and Ivory's creator was talked about in the Manga and Anime iirc.
Again personal opinion, but that actually make things worse, because I can't possibly fathom why a person like Nell Goldstein would hook up with someone like Agnus in the first place, let alone have a daughter with him (unless I should really start getting more into the series' spirit and take such things as they are instead of asking questions)
nell is nico's grandmother, not mother.
Nico outright says Nell is her grandmother, how did you end up thinking she's the mother?
V could have been a really cool individual character with some fun chaos-legion playstyle elements but I don't like the way his story or gameplay came out. Also he looks like Adam Driver and it's really annoying.
Also him being a part of vergil is detrimental to vergil's character also. What's with the shakespeare emo shit?
If anything, V being part of Vergil made me like Vergil all the more, you can't really deny that Vergil was always sort of one note, we only really knew about his motivations and goals and his lust for power, as much as I liked him aesthetically, he was pretty flat as a character. V lets us see what Vergil is like as a person. We know his interests, his traumas, his reasoning. We now know what Vergil is like as a person beyond 'muh power', and writing it off as 'shakesphere shit' really undersells just how much V improved his character.
I'm asking now for later: in Devil May Cry 5 playing certain missions as a different character the second or third time around opens new paths and/or enemy encounters to you or the mission remains the same with all three characters?
I'm asking because I don't know if the game is actively encouraging me to replay missions (aside from the different styles and achievements value, as always) or if it's just something about co-op.
On a side note, Urizen is fucking cool, even if the plot demands I loose to him every damn time I meet him (this far)
mission 7 has a different path for both characters but 13 is pretty much identical for all 3, and sadly those are the only 2 missions where you get to pick
also, you can beat Urizen as early as the prologue, you just have to be really good
