To give you an impression of how irrelevant 2 is to the series, the official history recap in DMC 5, DMC 2 has the shortest segment, even shorter than the animated series. I think it may be at least worth a try for an hour or two of gameplay just to see how boring it is. It's not brokenly bad or anything, just really dull and uninteresting. I usually don't like Crowbcat's videos but this is a really good indicator of how the game is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcvw1E0Mcac
worth trying out for half an hour or so to see why it's so bad but there's no reason to complete it other than e-peen
Ehh, DMC1 isn't that different tonally. The game starts with Trish wrecking Dante's shop with a motorbike and his response to that is "woah, slow down babe" in the most 90s surfer voice possible. Dante is a massive goofball even in 1. DMC5 if anything leans closer to the tone of DMC1 since it brings back some of that gothic horror element that DMC4 just dropped entirely form the series. DMC2 is the reason Dante has Balrog in DMC5. The prequel novel for DMC5 has him go back to the island of DMC2, reconnect with Lucia and fight Balrog who is the second in command to Argosax who's come back for revenge. That's also how Dante loses the original Cerberus, Balrog melts it down with his fire.
just go straight to dmc 3 - 2 is awful unless you really enjoy shooting infested tanks and helicopters with pistols and the story isn't connected at all to any of the other games (for a reason)
I haven't read the prequel novel yet personally, other than hearing about what it entails and lead up to so that's good to know. I'm still surprised honestly how much details they still reference to 2 despite being a game that no one really have much recollection other than that it's the weakest in the series. Though I do respect it, including the references to the other derivatives like the animated series since it does give the impression on how much they care about the game's world and history. And makes it a lot more meaningful to those fans who have followed through the series in every facet. Usually big name series will have all these spinoffs and derivatives but will be like they never existed in their main entries. So kudos to Itsuno and the team for going the extra mile there.
The prequel novel is pretty interesting since it essentially just exists to fill in existing plotholes and actually make the DMC canon cohesive instead of vague. They even manage to make the DMC1 novel canon through it and explain why Dante and Vergil never really knew Sparda all that well.
Not really. He's a very standard 'cool' character in DMC. He has a couple of quips but they're not great. His best line is "Flock off feather face", which is so cheesy it became a meme they reused in Bayonetta.
Thanks guys, I'll just give it a shot for an hour or two and see how I'll feel afterwards. I feel like DMC1 is nowhere near as insane as 5 and what I remember 3 being like. Sure, Dante is still chill and talks some shit to demons, but the entire game feels more serious and dark. Hell, Dante even cries at one point. The only really whacky thing that happens after the intro is the escape by plane. Meanwhile in DMC5, you've got Dante throwing roses at demons, performing MJ dances while wearing a magical cowboy hat, doing Bruce Lee impressions with the demon nunchucks and so on. He goes out of his way to fuck with demons constantly and he doesn't give the slightest fuck about anything outside of the whole family drama thing. And it's not just Dante, literally every good single member of the Scooby gang is a fucking nutjob. I think the tone is way different, which isn't a bad thing. I loved DMC1's more serious horror approach as much as I enjoyed whatever you would call the pure insanity that is 5.
Speaking of DMC2, I'd really like for them to at least show what Lucia would look like now. I'm kinda sad they just ignore the entire game cause it was so terrible but I loved Lucia's DT design.
Lets not forget that DMC2 wasn't even originally meant to be a DMC game until they stapled Dante on there, and when Itsuno was brought onto the project less than a year before launch (or was it half a year) it was such a broken mess of a non-game that he somehow managed to barely recover into a mediocre mess instead. The game was basically doomed from the start.
Yeah not gonna lie, Kamiya's Dante is less "playful" and more serious compared to Itsuno's Dante. He was still shit talky and snarky, but wasn't as, for a lack of a better word, "up-beat" compared to later games.
Its good that Kamiya left cuz now we got Dante and Bayonetta.
I kind of want them to remake DMC2 if only so Lucia can be in a good game. She has a great character design and unique fighting style compared to all the other protagonists but she's trapped in such an awful game. Plus more female playable characters in the character action genre would be nice. That or just make her a DLC character for DMC5

Man, I thought it'd be mid- to late April. Consider me MOTIVATED to finish SoS and DMD to max out my skills.
This better not be an April fool's scam.
Feel free to call me a pussy, but I'm on the original Devil May Cry last leg and both Nightmare and Mundus are giving me massive headhaces
please god let there be co-op in bloody palace, especially the ability to queue up with a friend or two. that would be fucking godtier. as for the april fool's joke: the april fool's joke will be that this was JUST a bloody palace update. you KNOW he's coming.
I don't have the image at hand but some of the dataminers who found out about the extra playable character also found code that calls for things like 'join session' 'host session' and so on. Really do hope that is the case because the few times the game let you play with others on the same area were a blast. Imagine the co-op combo potential. Will be a great upgrade too from the secret 2-player mode from DMC3.
DMC1 is pretty fucking mean for a lot of the wrong reasons, honestly. At least in 3 they show their hand when they try to kick you in the dick, but sometimes in 1 the fixed camera won't even let you see that, and the more limited attacks and options means you have to know what counters an enemy or eat shit.
you should spoiler tag that post fam, some people still havent played yet that would be fucking sick though
one of my friends just pointed out that V is basically Vergil's Nobody and I'm so fucking mad right now

An enjoyable ride, althought kinda merciless at times. I was genuinely surprised when the game casually severely implied Angelo Nero was in fact Vergil, but nor Dante nor the plot seem to give even a single fuck about it. Well, off to Devil May Cry 2. Oh, and by the way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4cWu-0g2P8 Most excellent.
It makes a little more sense after 3, but it's still a little strange. I'm sure its just Kamiya's team had a different vision than what Itsuno's team eventually worked up.
well when DMC1 came out it really didn't mean anything other than "oh dante had a brother and he got corrupted by evil"
https://twitter.com/MainEventTV_AKA/status/1106255784676081665 how badly do you have to suck to get a d in mission 8 of all places.
I saw a clip from his stream before and it's surreal to see someone so terrible at the game. I didn't even know it was possible to get anything lower than a C without deliberately playing bad and reviving every few minutes.
So after trying out DMC2 last night and not really feeling it (Did like the first 3 or 4 missions and holy crap is it easy?), I started up DMC3 this morning to see how it'll go. Well... I just finished it What a game, holy crap. The last boss fight felt like some anime battle, but in the best way possible. I was using trickster lvl3 and Rebellion, so both of us just teleported around like crazy, doing sick ass combos and shit. My fingers still hurt.
I have so many questions regarding Devil May Cry 2 at the moment, but, to be honest, I can't understand jackshit most of the time, so I'm kinda good. The only thing I'm sure of about the game is that I've often wished the first game would tone down the difficulty in some places, but not like this. That fucking guns' damage.
can't wait for the obligatory "dmc 5 makes you spend real money on red orbs!!" oh yeah btw @Beardy i also entered the cool kids club and ordered that DMC cap as well (which turned out to be out of stock everywhere with no plans to remanufacture but there's still a few on german amazon)
