where are you getting that price point from exactly?
lol what?
From what we can see, the index is looking pretty good? I didn't think it was ever confirmed to not come with launch titles. I'm also having a hard time tracking down the 1k price line you referenced. Have I missed some significant news release?
Looks like some weird rumors are going around again
Gonna tell us where you're getting that figure from or did you just pull it out of your ass?

Sorry, thought this was posted.
Looks like a good headset but well, its not convincing me to sell my WMR
The fact that it seems to be launching without any killed apps... is weak
The dude is speculating price points based on his 'sources'. I wouldn't go around flaunting his word as fact.
Maybe, but it's going to be really shitty if ValveVR doesn't have that pack in game people were waiting for, and was heavily speculated based off of leaks on SteamVR Home (which is a really nice feature btw)
And you expect us to believe a notorious speculator because....?
Like, it's not even confirmed so how you can throw around figures like that as if they are is just dishonest imo.
While I really want a half-life VR and would sell my current headset to get Valves just so I can get the best experience, Valve kindof doesn't really do games much now...
Oh, do I want to be proven wrong? You bet! But they've gone through so many canceled projects because of their 'flat structure' that it's just fucking uncanny. There's no indication that HLVR will end up differently.
VALVE PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG I WILL HAPPILY EAT MY WORDS IF I AM WRONG
Valve confirmed several times that they have VR games in development, it'd be silly if at least one those didn't release alongside the HMD.
If it turns out to be 1k€, will be a no buy from me. The absolute max I would be willing to pay for a setup is 600, with 400-500 preferred.
Yup, it needs to cost competitive.
I would hope, but due to their flat structure that they so boast about, they often have projects remaining derelict and abandoned. Perfectly serviceable ones too rather then simply proof of concept tests.
This is why we will never see a 3rd halflife game. Hopefully we'll see HLVR which we will call HL3 for years as the project is continuously started and restarted but uh...
If it's any consolation, HL1 had one project restart, and HL2 I think had 2. "Half life 3" had at least 4 at this point. Fuck
From what we know of the specs I can't see 1k being the price
My argument is that the entire set, including Lighthouse, will be over $1000. Gabe has stated that before a company attempts to lower the price of tech, there needs to be a "perfect" version of that thing before the price begins to lower. If not, then the standard will be set on things less than ideal, Inside-Out tracking being an example.
dont leave cables on the floor if you have a robo vacuum

Gotta throw them cables onto a wall like so:

doesn't that put stress on the cable, that's giving me anxiety
"You only have one launch"
I don't think you can pull a NMS when it comes to hardware. Hardware revisions, maybe, but not hardware itself.
The fuck is valve doing?
Inside-out tracking will never, ever become mass market, period
I'm not sure I follow? There's no additional strees to the cable via where it is plugged in and where it connects to the headset. In fact I think it helps keep the cable from being damaged from wear and tear ie twisting around it, tripping on it, or a roomba eating it.
The retractable cords that hold the cable are actually quite weak which is why I have three to guide it behind and over my monitor while I play.
I think you mean to say outside-in? Inside-out is no mounting. I do have my doubts about this statement either way, I mean WMR I think is mostly low on market share because it's relatively very new and poorly marketed but the inside-out isn't making it explode with popularity or anything. It is really nice, but honestly putting a couple tripods in the corner of a room did not really seem like a big hassle to me
What if they just put inside out cameras on the controllers too
Nah I think WMR headsets didnt make a dent because aside from one headset (the Odyssey) they're kindof 'the cheap option'. Now the Odyssey is great - Vive Pro optics at regular Vive pricing - but most people arn't going to look at the specs of that.
Or the amount of options ends up making people go "Eww! I think I'll take an Oculus instead. I mean, I've heard about Oculus Rifts for half a decade now and since they are decently priced" says Joe Consumer, not knowing that the Rifts he's thinking about were early dev units or the like.
It could also be market saturation - this happens with game consoles. You have maybe two options that are on top, and the third banana gets overlooked. Which means Valve better have something really good or it's going to fall behind the Vive and the Rift (but not WMR headsets because I really can't see that happening)
I mean they've definitely made a "dent", they're over 10% of the market by steam survey now, and while they are literally cheaper that's definitely not a good method of evaluating quality. The Rift is cheaper than the Vive but that doesn't make it the lower quality product. Those kinds of simple evaluations happen with low information consumers that buy based on emotion alone without doing research but I'd say that's significantly less common in the VR market.
The last thing you mentioned is mostly what I'm saying anyhow - they came in as a later option than the Vive or Rift without marketing much, the Rift/Vive basically marketed themselves to most of the initial group that'd be buying VR headsets by being the first real solid reasonably priced headsets, but WMR came in substantially later.
actually didn't know that WMR came out later, but I suppose the big question is if Valve's upfront-advertisement will be enough to sell the things. Especially if VNNs rumor of "No pack-in Halflife VR" is true.
If he's talking out of his ass and we do get a HLVR then I think it might help sell the headset. Like, yeah, you can play it on a normal non-valve headset without the knuckles controllers, scrub - but if you want the full experience then you better pony up for Valve's solution to VR
Shyyt, if the price is acceptable then I may sell my headset to get one.
I think the Valve Index (if at a competitive price) will take HTC's thunder.
After all, I didn't buy the HTC Vive because it was HTC that made it. I bought it because it was Valve that designed it and the systems around it.
On a side note, it'll be interesting to see if Valve's shipping arm is up to the task of shipping the Index worldwide. They did handle the Steam Controller pretty well, but I expect launching a VR HMD is a whole other level. Plus their customer support needs to at least outdo HTC's.
If I can save up money for the Index, I'll probably buy one. I wanted an upgrade, and I think the knuckles would work well too.
I wonder if the headset will work with the old base stations by HTC.
