yet esa manages it every year with a fraction of the budget
What confuses me is are there not breaks for the runners? And outside the event, are there actually communities dedicated to soeedrunning games in the realm of 9 hours per hopeful session? Like, if there are huge skips, or really cool ways to progress or finish the game, i guess i could understand, and it's nice to just be able to let people sleep and give half of a day to a few runners you can trust, since 24/7 events are a pain to manage, but... after the 3 hour mark, i highly doubt anybody is even listening to the game for longer than an hour, except maybe other members of the game's community.
like i said, his words not mine. https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/3bie4m/esa_having_a_second_stream_during_the_longer/csnli5v/
I don't know how much I'd even agree with him here, and I'm one of the few people that tries to be ambivalent when they here about GDQ drama and discussion. I know it's now a 3 years old response, maybe 4, but - the "second-class citizen" thing is just plain silly. Side events aren't "second-class citizens", we're not comparing humans here, they're part of the event, they compliment the main show in some way. There's no reason the second event has to classify runs, if it's exclusively long runs, that's a fault of RPGs for being long-form games, not GDQ or the runners for choosing them. It's not a risk of time and money at all, the first few GDQ events were literally filmed in a speedrunner's parents' basement, there's no reason why they couldn't run a second event with lower-quality gear exclusively about playing certain games or long-form speedruns. However, we can be hopeful, since it's clear the staff of the GDQ events are now trying to branch out and do more than the bi-annual AGDQ and SGDQ - they did an event a month or two agoo that involved speedrunning, though I'm not sure of the details, I just remember a shitload of more speedrunning vods being uploaded to the GDQ channel. I honestly could easily see having a second event relegated to either long-form runs, or goofy game runs, ala the goofy game blocks of past GDQ events.
On top of that ESA tend to have way less technical difficulties from what I've seen. Why it's so hard for GDQ to act just as professional will forever be a mystery to me.
https://clips.twitch.tv/ConfidentTallPlumWholeWheat I agree on the longer runs thing. Either don't have them or separate them. You could fit 10+ runs in the span of 9 hours.
I can't be the only one who can't stand it when Edobean or whatever her name is is on the mic. And she's always there for the most popular games too.
Nah I agree for the most part. I don't really take issue with her voice in general, but I can't stand when she does that "POYO!" thing. She does have a tendency to kind of take over someone's run once she gets going with donations. I'm glad they cut way back on that shit for this marathon, and maybe she's also passing on donations requesting her to say poyo.
imo, it depends on the game. I thoroughly enjoyed the super long paper mario the thousand year door run.
I wish they would stop with these "I wanna be the X" trial and error games, they are never interesting to watch.
I too enjoyed some of the long runs but I would still like them to be on a separate stream
Dunno why they keep letting IWBTG fangames through but this was one of the worse runs in this marathon.
That was a really good ALttp low% OHKO run.
They're usually pretty fun. I liked the one last year. This one was just far too hard of a game, and I think the runner got flustered halfway through and started fucking up.
Someone in chat mentioned something about a runner ragequitting yesterday. Does anyone know anything about that or was it a lie?
The only run I can think of offhand would be the Divinity 2 run, but the runner didn't ragequit. He messed up his run with too many autosaves, and didn't have death fog in a spot where it was required to progress. So he was going to restart but the staff must have informed him there wasn't enough time, so they abruptly cut the run short.
Bloodborne has been met BABBYYYY
This guy has so much energy, I love it.
I've been catching up, and as per usual the RaC run was on point. The Vice City run is actually really fun, the runner has great commentary and I honestly forgot how broken that game can get even casually so seeing some of these tricks is honestly pretty neat. two commas boys
He's one of those runners where people typically love him or really dislike him. I personally think he's great, and his run during the last AGDQ marathon was also A+.
This guy is chill as hell, he seems like a huge bro
Oh shit they got heyZeusHeresToast back? I've not been keeping up with the live stream, but Bloodbourne and beards can only mean one guy. His all bosses run was a riot last time.

I find it really hard to care about mario romhack runs.
Minor correction, he was cheered on to continue but he was too upset to continue. You can even hear the current announcer go "no man you got this it's fine". Dude was just made to suffer. A) It was his first event and he was excited for it B) His couch bailed on him leaving him alone C) The game screwed him up and killed his run D) Anxiety kicked his ass. I really hope he's okay.
Yeah now that I went back and checked the footage, I noticed he actually quit the game before they cut away. When he was recreating his character I originally thought they just cut away after telling him he couldn't restart.
The only advantage to the crowd yelling MOON every time the runner gets a moon in Mario Odyssey is that due to the fact that there are almost five hundred moons to individually collect in the game, a crowd that is already visibly burned out from doing the orb shit for an entire week is rapidly losing enthusiasm and twenty minutes in there's already only a few people in the crowd doing it.
His... couch bailed on him?
The audience clapping for these moons is strangely compelling.
Chat's getting all the hype rn
