I don't know about that. Everyone in my personal circle of fellas I'd usually contact doesn't play it anymore for reasons stated, and I personally have the impression that the usual internet circles (reddit and co.) laid down on Overwatch aswell. Hell, I know a dude that goes to an "esport school" which was originally intended for Overwatch and the entire class grew tired of it. Obviously this is just anecdotal evidence, but I don't believe it's "just the thread".
Overwatch currently has more viewers on Twitch than Apex Legens, a game that just came out. There are plenty of people still enjoying this game.
The OWL is merely viewbotting and carrot on a stick-ing people (owl token). Those viewer only happens during the Overwatch league, suspiciously enough, otherwise the game is not even in the top 10 game of twitch anymore. All of its streamer have quit it, to become variety streamer, because they knew they had nothing to look forward anymore. Even then, 200k viewer is pitiful for them. World cup or OWL, it ain't different, they are not breaking the 300k viewer anymore. How do they get revenue from this? Something isn't right in the Overwatch League, it is failing and rotten to the core since its very beginning. Controversy upon controversy. What's next for it? And just check out the chat. The 100 person legitimately watching it are complaining about GOATS or shouting "Dead Game".
You do realize the reason people watch them is to just get the coins to purchase the team skins, and instead of actually watching the video they tab out of it and mute it?
Not all of them do. Weird how people want to purchase team skins for a game they don't ever play, right?
I can give you three. DotA 2, League of Legend, CS:GO. And those number goes beyond the 200k regularly, and that's ONLY when they have their "Small tournament". Now, what happens when it is, say, the LoL world or the DotA international? At this point, we goes beyond 800k. DotA 2 is 7 year old now, and CS:GO is also 7 year old now, and League of Legends is, as of today, 10 year old. 10 year ago, the giant that would be League of Legend started its official beta with over 16 champion to choose from. 9 year ago, the MOBA second only to League of Legend DotA started its beta. The first international was in 2011 and beat all records both in prizepool and viewership.
Sounds good. Are those games dead?
Unfortunately, yes. DotA 2 and League of Legends are dead game as I'm speaking they have lawbreaker playercount - 4 players. But it's fine, because they're enjoying their 2v2. Can you say the same for Overwatch? Didn't think so.
My entire take on this is, I don't really want overwatch to do badly. But the way the developers flat out lie and neglect core issues of the game, along with the overall recent behavior of Activision Blizzard as a whole makes it really hard to actually support it. With how hard the esports scene and merchandise is pushed, you'd think Overwatch was some revolutionary amazing game, but behind that facade is game absolutely ridden with balancing issues, that is gotten to the point where the community seems to agree it only really gets one good update a year. And I know Im not the only one who thinks this, hell I wager this is how the majority of people who still even keep up with the game feels, as seen by people boo-ing at OWL. But I'm not happy about this, Overwatch aesthetically is amazing and I think it has potential to actually be what its pretending to be. But it seems like it was enough for Blizzard to skip the "actually make the game good" step in making a successful esport, and care more about the brand of the game rather than the game itself.
I really can't take viewer numbers of Overwatch on Twitch seriously if they actively pay players to watch. There is no separation between "I am here because I love Overwatch!" and "I have this open in the background to farm coins. I really like the Mcdonalds version of McCree" Meanwhile when people watch something like Apex, they are watching it to watch Apex, and you know this for sure.
overwatch was that perfect high school student who had perfect grades with lots of friends and a promising future career but then they flunked out of college
No, Overwatch is a student that peaked in college but is not ready for a real life work environment.
OVERWATCH is just a college party student, full stop.
Overwatch is simply a kid getting beaten up by jumper cable by its father who lost his mind
I still enjoy OW, but precision shooting is my favorite aspect of the game and even on ladder I frequently have to mirror GOATS where the only character that gets to do that is Zen. Even playing Zen in GOATS mirrors isn't particularly satisfying because you're often firing into a big wall of tanks. It still takes strategy and teamwork, which are also things I enjoy about OW, but DPS heroes and high mechanical skill plays are equally important to the OW formula.
I feel like GOATS is just evidence that OW is broken on a mechanical level, even in the the OWL the commentators just accept that its simply the safest way to the play game, despite being boring as fuck to watch and play. And then a team tries to run a damage character that isn't widow or sombra and they get stomped into the dirt and just switch back to GOATS. Like I honestly don't see how Blizz hope to keep people watching when literally 90% of games are the same mirror match that always goes the same way and every game blurs into the same thing only with the death ball is a different color.
Might be mine, too, if my shots landed where it looked like they should. Still had that problem where if a target was moving, and my cross-hair was right on their head when I fired with a hit-scan weapon, it wouldn't register as a hit at all. Which is understandably very irritating.
I imagine Blizzard will finally do something when the various mega corporations and investors come knocking at their door wonder why their investment is tanking.
Any time I see a team go GOATS reminds me of when someone went Bayonetta in smash 4 just to time out the other contestants
the redditors and bnet forum users are mostly loving this goats shit though, finally they can main only support and win when their gold team has 3 support mains
The best part is hearing the excitement in the commentators voices when someone picks literally anything other than goats and then the audible sadness when they inevitably change back and they run out of things to say other than "ooh he has grav. Oh the rein is low. Oooh theres the rally."
I really hope the new hero is somekind of goats buster
I do not because the last time they specifically tailored a character to end a meta they made Brigitte.
In my opinion the whole outrage about Brigitte being broken was entirely over-exaggerated and the same outrage would be better spent on doing something even better like removing Mei from the game altogether
Yeah designing characters specifically to counter the current comp isn't a great way of going about things. The problems behind goats are ingrained much deeper into the fabric of OW and I really don't see a way of fixing it outside of nerfing healing across the board.
Percentage damage character comeonnn.
Pretty sure Reddit doesn't like goats, and I can guarantee that if it exists, bnet forum users don't like it.
Why not instead bring other under used or "niche" characters and put them up to par? Wait, Blizzard has already done that but they've completely missed the mark and do not understand how to balance them. Reaper had his passive overbuffed and anyone can outpace him and his guns, Bastion is encouraged to be Spray 'n' Pray, Symmetra fails to be relevant, and Torbjorn is slightly worse than what he was before.
I will contest they have done good things to Torb and Symmetra. The only part about Torb that bothers me is his unusual turret cooldown timer, instead of a regular cooldown timer.
Because the vast majority of the characters have an extremely obnoxious kit that if put up to par with Brigitte or Tracer at their peak would make the game an even more unfun experience? Do you have fun against that binary characters Bastion? Do you enjoy playing against that highly-rewarding, overly safe Junkrat? Do you want them to be on par with Tracer in terms of viability? The characters need massive kit rework before being allowed to be viable.
