I'm basing this on his design, but his actions in Persona 5 also lend credence to that conclusion. Don't get me wrong, if you've seen my avatar or know anything about me, you'll know I appreciate edgy character design--I just don't care for another mostly-silent archetypal anime character in Super Smash Bros. I'll never understand why people complained about Piranha Plant of all things--a Nintendo icon--versus Joker.

That only would've worked if he was an AT and didn't do anything. Also, this brings a point as to why I can't have Joker wear a cylinder.

He's a little quiet in-universe but he does speak pretty frequently. He's just mostly not voiced.

Joker has two "canon" names, Ren Amamiya in P5D and P5A, and Akira Kurusu in the manga. Which one is "more canon" is... the subject of endless debate.

I wouldn't say Joker is edgy, The best I could describe him, is how those drag queens act form RuPaul While he wears black and red, he isn't edgy per-say, just really "performative/theatric" and really smug and troll-y But outside the mask, he's a dork

TBH, I kinda do that because characters like Joker and Robin kiiinda fail at being "self interest" Since they have there (minor) personalities, (and I just simply don't relate to them) So might aswell use there official name Plus, it's just nice to know as someone who writes fanfictions And yes, I actually do enjoy stale bread, water without any ice, the newest seasons of the simpsons... not dirt though

difference is there isn't a "canon" name for characters like SMT protags. even "Joker" isn't called "Joker Joker" in P5, and different adaptations just give them different names ("but dude Yu Narukami is the canon P4 name" yeah and before that it was Souji Seta). Link is straight up just called Link as of Breath of the Wild, meanwhile every Persona protag has had like 10 different names and people try to recreate the 'canon' route instead of playing the game for themselves. Who are you gonna main in Smash, Ren Amamiya or Akira Kurusu in Smash Bros? (also BotW Link is just Link, might want to separate "canon" from canon there)

I'm 100% sure that keeping us in the dark with Joker is simply because of time constraints between reveal and now due to restarting development after launch, but after this we'll start seeing DLC reveals in a much more polished condition. Clearly they're now working on all the DLC at the same time since they already know who they're doing so it makes sense.

Robin and Joker need to have personalities because a large part of the game is their interactions with other characters. Robin has literally hundreds of conversations, so making all their interactions "..." wouldn't work. Besides, Robin is kind of paper thin (thankfully while still being likeable unlike Corrin), so there's a bit of flexibility to make their personality the player's own.
