It makes sense, I'm just saying Alm would have been a better pick in terms of having more variety in game origins. With Chrom we have 3 characters from Awakening, that's almost half of all FE characters in Smash, and his design is overall very similar to the other blue-haired swordsmen. Also, I think by now the FE community has developed a bigger liking to Alm over Chrom, as far as I know.

The roster was probably decided around 2015-2016 back when Fates was still the newest FE game. It would have been the more "logical" choice to add Chrom over Alm considering Echoes was just starting development at the time.

Fair enough, though looking at how Chrom is implemented it feels like he was a pretty late addition but then again, they had the model ready thanks to Robin's final smash

Smash is always inconsistent on what they change and not. Like why did Meta Knight need a new FS where he grows 4 wings and does a "Maximum Spider" when his old one was fine enough, yet Robin still has his S4 FS with Chrom, despite Chrom being playable this time. You never know lol

I mean I'll take it either way, even though I'd like other series to get new reps it's still a new character and since it's actual paid DLC it'll likely not be another Marth type clone.

Thing is, a fire emblem rep wouldn't fit the bill of "has no representation in Smash" so I don't know why people are worried

I think FE reps needed more variety in terms of movesets. We had Marth, which Roy was a clone of. Ike replaced Roy and kinda played differently but tools weren't that different. Then Lucina came. Was just Marth but more consistent. Then Roy came back with new animation but essentially the same tools. So that's four characters with very similar playstyles, varied by speed, weight, spacing and damage. And THEN we got Robin, which finally broke the mold of the FE reps with actual FE representation within his moveset. Talk about saturated. So it's no surprise that people are kinda sick of 'em. Oh ye.. Corrin. He's basically like Ike. Somewhat similar tools with a different playstyle, altho nothing like Robin did. And Chrom who needs no introduction at this point. If the next FE rep isn't more like Robin and is more akin to Marth with how they wield their weapon, of course people will be bummed out (or absolutely livid for the extreme ones) about it. Just give her a nice new moveset, like the newcomers have, a new gimmick (could be summoning a foot soldier cause her game seems to revolve around battle formations) and I think she'd be more welcomed. A little bit more.

I'd feel better about it since that'd only be one character out of ten, rather than one character out of five. That provides more chances for characters from new or underrepresented series and Edelgard or whoever would stand out less. This is kind of irrelevant to what you asked, but I definitely wouldn't complain about another Fire Emblem stage. The current proportion is wack. Seven characters across three stages. That's 2.33 characters per stage. Mario has 0.5 characters per stage, Zelda has 0.67, and Pokemon has 1 (if you count PT as one character). Fire Emblem was one of the few series to receive new stages in both Smash 3DS and Smash Wii U, but it wasn't enough to offset how quickly it accumulated new characters.

I would argue a surprisingly large number of people know about Lucas and M3 thanks entirely to Brawl, just like many discovered Marth, Roy, and FE in general from Melee, and got curious about Earthbound thanks to Ness in 64. There are quantifiable, documented interest upswings in each of these characters/games following their Smash inclusions, and it's starting to happen again with Simon's inclusion, sparking younger gamers to research and discover classic Castlevania.
