Idk if I said this in this thread yet but I'm so tired of NES games being put on a pedestal like Nintendo does
NES games to me are like those lil web games that Google would have on their homepage, some day. I'll play it for a minute or two because "heh, hey, cool" but then I remember I'm not really having fun, and want to play something more fleshed out. Very, very few NES games have me saying "yeah, I wanna keep playing this!"
Like, coming into Super Mario Bros. as someone who grew up with Super Mario Advance games feels janky.
Donkey Kong is more of a marvel of origin, than a game I feel like many new players can enjoy, now.
And then there's... Soccer? Ice Hockey? Baseball? These aren't really fun.
I know Nintendo is super picky about their VC quality, but I doubt it can be that hard to have SNES, N64, even GCN titles on the Switch. At least, not to have two years go by with no word on it, and also, as far as their current console generation is concerned, no way to play them (sans SNES).
NES games just... Aren't fun, anymore. They're a gimmick. My sister and brother-in-law grew up with this, but I don't have that factor, and people who do are only becoming a smaller percentage.
Tell that to the 5 million people who bought the NES classic.
ghosts n goblins for the NES made me realize that game design has come far
i can probably count on one hand the nes games that i would enjoy playing today
SMBs(1, 2, &) and Mega Man in general are really the only NES games that I could play alright. Other games of the NES era feel much better/refined further down the line on SNES (Especially Zelda and Metroid)
The only game I played and I think its the only worth one was Kirby's Adventure
Don't get me wrong, I like a ton of NES games... but games have evolved. The leap between NES to SNES alone was incredible. Like, to the point where offering me NES games digitally gives ZERO interest.
i'm annoyed that every nes online update so far this year has been 3 games for japan, and only 2 for the rest of the world.
It doesn't help that most of the good NES games either have been released plenty of times before (either paid or for free like Animal Crossing had) or have remasters. Why would I want to play Kirby's Adventure when I can play Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, which is an remake with new features on the GBA? Why would I want to play Super Mario Bros. 3 when Super Mario All Stars exists?
Additionally, I know I'll get flak for this, but it's kind of hard going back to NES graphics. Slowdown, limited palettes, and chip tunes were limitations of the time and honestly I prefer games from later gens like SNES or GBA that have aged well with better graphics and sound. Depending on the game some N64 era stuff has aged well so going back isn't much of a hassle.
There's a lot of good games on the GBA, DS, N64, Gamecube and SNES that are hard to find nowadays and re-releasing them would be great. There's plenty of niche titles that could be re-released as well. Implementing local multiplayer in docked mode would be great as well.
Final Fantasy is still a great game considering the path it blazed. Until you get to the WarMech, then you get fucked if you haven't been grinding like a slut on spring break.
Dragon Warrior aged slightly less well due to being even less intuitive than FF1's worst.
On the other hand, for better or worse, both franchises are still alive and putting out games on modern systems so if you don't like the retro experience you can play newer ones.
honestly the NES games barely interest me. I think the one I've been actually playing on/off was Mario 3 but that's because I really enjoy the title. This whole 'throwing out 2 games every so often lol' thing is ridiculous. At this rate we'll be on the Nintendo Dimensional Switch 2 or some shit before we even see an SNES title.
huh, i went searching to see if i could find a list of NES titles that didn't release in japan and based on the one i found, it's mostly just licensed stuff or games needing specific accessories. that kinda makes it understandable, since nintendo probably doesn't want to deal with that kind of licensing or making a power glove for switch.
There's a reason why I hacked my SNES Classic to include so many more games, as well as Genesis and GBC/GBA stuff. It's bizarre that Nintendo works on emulating games at such a slow pace when they've got two generations of framework as well as the capability to reach out and contact emulation developers externally, yet seem to refuse even considering the option (though probably because they likely consider all unofficial emulation to be endorsing piracy).
Most of those people probably bought it for the nostalgia, played it for like a day and then either forgot about it or modded it so it could play more than just NES games.
