TF2 General Chat & Speculation Station V17 - Ms. Pauling Won't Stop Calling Me

Maybe r_rimlight /mat_phong/something else I cannot remember affect the medals? I know one of those options can turn your australium into silver or copperium.
That sums up the entire MyM update. They started with the MvM lobby system and grafted on some badly thought out and even more poorly implemented PvP functions. That alone would be utterly disastrous, but they've done remarkably little to fix it in the nearly THREE YEARS since launch. I think the only reason Valve's casual matchmaking system isn't viewed in an even worse light is existence of the abandoned hacker paradise that is the official competitive mode.
Sure, this contains the loose subdirectory for tf/custom. Should cover buildings, weapons, specific props, etc. I don't know if I ever finished fine tuning it, but it turned out to look good with the pyro/engineer exponent maps from SFM.
lightwarp.zip
I also have a "faithful" full-res BLU engineer vtf, visible in the second shot. It might not be perfect, as it was edited in Photoshop, and I don't have any kind of 3D model viewer to test alignment with the model's UVs.
engineer_blue.vtf
If you look at the vanilla engineer textures, the devs painted red over the blue one and vice versa, except one of the edits is 50% smaller and then scaled back up. Not only does this waste a tiny bit of VRAM on something not actually as detailed as intended, but the end result looks like digital oatmeal.
remember when valve were actual human beings?

also the golden pans is likely what came of the golden wrench "follow up". They use the same timer bs drop after all.
item creators of tf2, hear my call
you know how only medals get added to tf2 nowadays? You know how every single time there is an update, a really bad pocket item is added to the game that everyone hates?
Hear me out; Pocket Medal. Get onto it.
A "You're Winner!" trophy.
Pocket Participator
The medals we make are used to promote community events, and you know, actual things to do in tf2 since valve doesn't create content anymore?
People like to get mad at the continual medal patches, but forget that the community is doing a lot of (free!) work to keep the playerbase engaged and playing.
It's not like the medals are being shipped instead of actual update content. That would require valve to put effort in, and we all know what an absentee parent they are about that.
its a joke
I know what medals exist for
I on the other hand however dont exist what pocket items exist for
easy revenue
Medals absolutely have a place in the game as a means to reward the community for continuing to be creative or have fun with the game. However, to say that badges are on the same level as other cosmetics would be a delusion - they are relatively unnoticeable and pretty easy to make. If you get passed the design phase of the badge and model it, all you have to do is adjust the positioning of the mesh and change the bone it's rigged to and you're good to go. There's a good reason nobody wears the non-special badges like the Grordbort Crest items, the Atomic Accolade, and so on. In about 99% of cases if a medal is worn at all, it's a competitive/event medal, or a Gentlemann's Service Medal. They don't compete for a spot on the Steam Workshop because of their nature as being a distributed item like that.
In the case of non-badge cosmetics, they compete for their spot on the workshop and people are doing this to get their item in the game and receive some percentage of the sales of the item directly or of the keys for crates that yield them - people are competitive about having their items on the workshop. Pocket and "pet" items are just generally pretty low-visibility in a lot of cases, so they are not seen as special or valuable in the least. It feels somewhat insulting to have one added into the occasional cosmetic cases we get, and especially if they are a common unbox. Who the fuck would ever wear the Pocket Santa?
Itsy Bitsy Spyer was a cute one-off cosmetic that was kind of fitting given that Spy most commonly attacks Snipers or Engineers and even now it's among my top favorite pocket cosmetics. Builder's Blueprints was fitting for Engineer. The vast majority of others are just "here's a random animal or plushie-styled TF2 character".
If you want a few examples, here's every pocket item in the game:
Builder's Blueprints
Couvre Corner
Deadliest Duckling
Dry Gulch Gulp
Koala Compact
Wally Pocket
Clubsy the Seal
Dual-Core Devil Doll
Hillbilly Speed-Bump
Itsy Bitsy Spyer
Li'l Staggletooth
Little Bear
Mister Bubbles
Pocket Admin
Pocket Heavy
Pocket Horsemann
Pocket Medic
Pocket Momma
Pocket Pardner
Pocket Pauling
Pocket Purrer
Pocket Pyro
Pocket Raiders
Pocket Santa
Pocket Saxton
Pocket Villains
Pocket Yeti
Prize Plushy
Teddy Roosebelt
Teddy Robobelt
Tropical Toad
Count how many you've seen worn by other players, and count how many you just outright did not know existed. I did not even know the Wally Pocket existed. I'll admit though: it "fits" because Sniper is from Australia and thus kangaroos exist haha get it. I think it's cool that these people got their items added to the game and I wish I had the same patience to sit down and model something. But come on, you can't tell me anybody specifically asked for the Pocket Yeti and that it was only chosen because Valve figured it'd fit Jungle Inferno due to the Yeti theming, or the Tropical Toad because it was jungle-themed.
If it were up to me, I'd continue adding pocket items but make it so that they only are received as "bonus" items for unboxing cosmetic cases. Similar to the Halloween-restricted airplace/helicopter items for Pyro/Demo/Engineer a couple years back.
teddy roosebelt and the pocket medic are an exception to the rule id like to argue
I'm still mad that they renamed Pocket Protector into Pocket Pyro.
I like the pocket items that mimic Engie's facial expressions, like Clubsy the Seal and the Beep Boy do.
My first ever cosmetic drop was a Teddy Roosebelt back when it and the Team Captain came out, when it was worth like 5 refined (and like 2.33 refined was worth a key). I was a very happy man.
In other news, reddit reaffirms their stance as a band of comp-hating ignoramuses, who've misunderstood the term "trickle down balance" to mean: "obscure/format-specific 6s bans should balance weapons"
And you wonder why valve doesn't take feedback seriously. Nobody in competitive is actually suggesting that weapons be nerfed into oblivion because they create a problem in a format that is intentionally made to not resemble casual.
But these dingbats think so. This is also why the GRU/eviction notice nerf was entirely overkill.
Why in the fucking world would comp players even use the term trickle-down balance when it has super strong connotations to one of the stupidest and backward-thinking economic systems that only benefit the rich?
I'm definitely not interested in having actual economic system debates because this is a TF2 thread still, but good god did whoever come up with that term not have ANY foresight whatsoever?
They absolutely are. The Roosebelt is definitely my favorite pocket item overall.
This was made popular by Dane IIRC.
no comp player i know is using this term, just seems to be this guy
the tropical toad and croaking hazard are the best items in the game don't @ me
I really hope he isn't saying more stupid shit like that in his videos. Misinformation is already a huge problem in general society, I'd appreciate it if the only famous TF2 guy at this point outside of Purplemoose isn't making it worse. There's literally no need to call balancing anything outside of balancing. You gain nothing by giving it stupid-ass uninformed terms like "Trickle-down balancing". Say you're balancing with a focus on competitive play. Say you're balancing with a focus on casual play. Don't say you're using trickle-down balancing.
can we stop, thanks, out with this political stuff
You say you don't want to have a debate on the matter, and yet you posit this completely tangential opinion in a TF2 thread regardless. Hmm.
My tangential opinion was and is that calling balance anything other than balance is stupid, and using a term like trickle-down is even worse. It doesn't take a literary degree to just explain what kind of balancing you're focusing on, and i certainly don't want any tut-tutting from Mr. "I'm just positing my opinion that in a smash thread that Joker is a bland anime protag when nobody asked or prompted me, whats the problem why is everybody getting annoyed".
My post is not calling for any response and is certainly not itching for a profound debate. When i want to discuss politics in a tf2 thread, i'll be transparent and say "hey guys let's discuss politics". We clear?
I think it's perfectly possible for items to be all good, interesting, fun and balanced for both comp and pub.
gunboats, flaregun, kritzkrieg. I'd name more that are very close but literally all unlocks need tweaks at this point.
So if I understand this correctly, opinions or the conclusions of others that conflict with your own when shared with a voluntary audience is misinformation...
Being mislead with information is only as effective as the reader/listener makes it to be. This is why debates are important. This is why comment sections on Youtube videos, albeit cancerous, are a necessary component to the platform. Surprisingly enough these comment sections are frequently blessed with counter-arguments that content creators like Uncle Dane are notified about which also happen to be visible to everyone that views the video.
As long as they understand the theory behind someone's position, I don't think it matters what ever the fuck the theory is referred to as.
So the better question would be... Why did you post it in on a forum designed for responses.
The RGL No Restrictions 6s league is going to be a good reminder for everyone as to why competitive formats use whitelists. B4nny has good intentions by suggesting there is room for more meta play with no restrictions, but with the weapons that have been introduced over time, more often then not they substitute lower skill floor mechanics for efficiency which can easily be overcome by an experienced player.
Haha. No thanks.

I really think it's just a case of making sure that the item is playtested and balanced properly. Very rarely have I seen a weapon that is only "overpowered" in one or the other modes of play, outside of crit-based weapons. When the Wrangler is oppressive in competitive HL, it's also oppressive in pubs. Atomizer was just as strong in its original state in pubs as it was for comp Scouts. I can't think of a single weapon that couldn't be useful both in competive and in pubs if balanced properly.
I disagree. The very nature of some items and even some classes just plain don’t work in a competitve environment where it works well in a casual environment. Spy is one of the biggest example of this.
Hell, a lot of tf2’s core game design and map design doesn’t lend well to competitive modes. Highlander has too many players for it to work very well as an e-sport and 6s has too few players to make use of all the classes and mechanics.
Imo items should be designed around pub play, and balanced around individual skill, as well as if it’s fun to fight against.
well not with that attitude mister.
I think spy can be a surprise card in comp exactly because of this kind of mentality "hah class so bad they'll never use it" which can be to spy's advantage. It's happened before.
