Glad it did well enough for expansions. Game has a lot of potential.

How is Mechanicus as a game? Tbf I'm a bit worn out on turn based tactics.
I mean if you're bored with turn-based tactical games, you're not exactly gonna be interested in Mechanicus. It's a delightful game and slowly turning your tech priests in to nightmare murder machines is great. But it's a turn-based tactical game and while there are variant mechanics, the core is the same.
Right. I'm gonna put it on hold and maybe pick it up during the summer sale instead. I enjoy those kinds of games but after all the Spacehulks and Deathwatch, you know, just a bit full at the moment.
Theme wise, it's on point, probably one of the better representations of 40k in a video game IMO.
Gameplay wise... it can be a little easy and somewhat basic although balance patches have attempted to remedy this.
In shortlist of things regarding gameplay.
Unless a unit has some rather uncommon dodge abilities, all attacks hit guaranteed. This applies to you and enemies but as a result maps have more ways to break line of sight and stay out of the line of fire.
Unit actions are based on a battle-wide resource called "cognition" cognition can be gained in a variety of ways, usually by having a tech priest stand next to something that generates cognition or having a servo skull scan it. Some actions cost cognition, others do not. For example, you can move a tech priest up to their full movement in a turn for free, this does not end if you only use half of it. If a techpriest can move 5 squares you mave move them three squares forwards, do something and then two squares backwards for free. Your guns may or may not cost cognition to fire based on what guns you use, so its possible to move for free, shoot for free and get into cover for free. If you spend one cognition (out of a maximum of four till you unlock upgrades to how much you can keep) you may move your full movement again. Weapons can only be used ONCE per turn but there is no limit to how many you can fire in a turn... besides the fact that tech priests can only carry two guns and a power axe.
Units don't permadie, you get them back at the end of the mission and pay a cost depending on hour injured they were. You have tech priests and troops. Troops are very basic, they have usually one or two actions including moving and that includes attacks. They cannot level up but each troop type can be upgraded with the pertinent mission rewards, think of them as a rank and file unit in an RTS but it's turn based. Tech priests themselves are more like your XCOM soldiers, they can gain levels and choose perks as they rank up. Rather than gaining XP to rank up, you simply spend money to rank them up. Tech priests are unique and you don't hire new ones, rather you gain a new one as a mission reward. Troops can be deployed in any number provided you have the cash and dropship space. Tech priests are free to deploy but you are limited by how many you have and you pay money to heal them when they get back (if they are hurt) Troops cost money to deploy but you can have as many as you like and you pay a flat rate to deploy them but you get refunded a percentage of their cost depending on how damaged they are, up to a full refund if they are at full HP.
Necrons come in various flavours based upon their various unit choices in the tabletop, the kicker is, barring bosses, each nercon is semi randomised with differing amounts of HP, Energy armour and Physical armour, their stats are unknown to you at the start of a round and you must use servo skulls or information detecting skills and equipment to learn these stats for every unit.
Damage comes in three flavours, energy, physical and raw. the first two are reduced by the pertinent armour type, the latter gives 0 shits and goes right for the health bar. Amour is simple, weapon damage - armour = damage to health. if you shoot a unit with a 3 energy damage attack and they have 1 energy armour they take two damage.
It's a fun game, not the best turn based strategy game i've ever played but certainly one of the best 40k games i've ever played. The sound design, the art-style, the particle effects and even what little voicework there is makes for a game that feels amazing.
If you want a stellar TBS, reconsider purchase, if you really like the admech as a faction (or necrons) then this game is worth getting.
I actually just picked up Mechanicus today. I've only played very briefly, so I can't comment on the difficulty, but the lore, music, visuals and story so far have been on point.
They have also added a bunch of difficulty modifiers very recently as well, according to the Community site - it looks like you can turn on things like permadeath, etc.
The only downside is that I was supposed to be saving up for Renegade Knights, but still, money well spent (not like £18 will make much of a difference!)
Something I really rather like about Mechanicus is its turn system. Rather than alternating from one team to another, it goes by individual unit. I find this can make your actions more important because you don't always get to move your other guys immediately before/after each other.
Also I just like it because the first tactical game I ever played was like that and honestly I credit my love of both tactical video games and physical wargames to that game.
Curse you guys and your good reasoning. Just bought the game.

Space Marine missile launcher.
Well he is a son of Dorn... odds are if he didn't have a missile to hand he would have stuck his power fist in there...
Any word on when the contrast paints are released?
They said in the announcement, June. Beyond that, no.
How does Kill team play, especially for armies like Space Wolves or Orks? Is it worth picking up?
Never played against orks in KT but SM are pretty tanky in KT.
Joining on the fandom. I arrived in the Gamer's Guild shop out of the blue and the dude introduced me to the models, the lore, the game, prices, etc. I wasn't ready to spend any more money that day, but I did buy a bunch of Wh40K games on the steam sale.
As much as I like rag on GW for their pricing, its a telling sign when after being in the hobby since I was a mere child, only now have I had my first genuine issue with a GW product.
4 full armies and only a single bad cast is a pretty high standard of quality control.
GW still has the best plastic models I've seen so far. Apart from some being nightmares to assemble, i've yet to see anything come close in quality. Just a shame they dont do MORE things.
It'd be interesting if GW brought back their historical line.
Yeah, it was Jarran Kell who died.
Kell sacrificed himself so Creed could leave the area he was in, not leave Cadia itself. Creed was still on Cadia when the evac finished and was in the process of bleeding out when a figure who is presumably Trazyn snatched him.
So i could use some advice, i did a really quick and dirty mockup with colours trying to emulate the weapons for Ylthari's Guardians and it ... looks okay for the amount of time i put in. But my question is that i started with a brighter midtone, then filled in the dark, blended then blended the light and finished the white. Would it be quicker/easier to just go for the Incubi darkness first then layer up?

Normally I'd say yes, but for something like that you probably did the right thing, layering up to such a bright color from Incubi Darkness would not be easy.
