I've been thinking about Porky's chances and I don't really know what to think anymore. On one hand, he's nowhere to be seen in the game currently, not even as a spirit, which is odd considering how important he is to the Mother series compared to some other spirits. People say the Absolutely Safe Capsule spirit is supposed to represent him but that doesn't make sense to me. On the other hand, he just seems like a very strange choice for a DLC character, a title so far reserved for fan favorites and "holy shit" characters like Bayo, Cloud and Joker. It just seems there are a lot of signs pointing towards him, but also kinda not at the same time?

If they do, spirit/assist upgrades almost certainly have to wait until Wave 2. That being said . . . . . #TeamIsaac #TeamGeno #TeamLyn
Ultimate letting us control master hand is a step towards letting us control assist trophies but it'd still be super out of left field. I'm still totally down for it though.
The Assist Trophy lineup is ripe for promotions to fighter status where nearly every character would make either a good fighter or a good joke character and yet somehow I'm sure it'd manage to turn out to be a monkey's paw somehow
Some assist trophies like Krystal and Spring Man already have like half a full moveset
Don't think anyone would actually miss assist trophies if it meant the characters could just be fighters. I certainly wouldn't.
ATs are pretty much Pokeballs for non-Pokemon characters anyway.
Makes me wonder if they were cut.
ATs do serve a valuable purpose though, allowing many characters that are too shallow, unwieldy, or outright bizarre to be fighters to still appear during matches. I'd honestly want to see MORE assist trophies. Gimme King Bob-Omb, or Raphael Raven, or Blaze the Cat, or a hostile Octoling, or something from Meteos. So much potential still.
Assist trophies drop absurdly quickly in Ultimate for some reason. There's usually at least one assist trophy on screen at a time and they drop at least once every thirty seconds, which makes for a lot of chaos and reliance on them in free for alls given how long the average one stays out on the field. They really, really wanted you to be using a lot of assist trophies in this game. That and the various assist trophies have weird drop rates. You'll get Krystal every other trophy but for some reason Isaac of all characters has a lower drop rate than Rathalos. I've seen hours pass and dozens upon dozens of assist trophies be used without him showing up. He's not even better than the other trophies, it's fucking weird.
We can have Ditto transform into literally any other fighter and acts identically to a CPU. It's fair to assume that given some coding, a fair number of ATs can probably be outright "controlled" and would act similar to a fighter given that.
Being able to control assist trophies in a side mode would be a fun diversion. Like you pick a fighter and then 1-3 assist trophies, assign them each to a taunt (up, side, or down) and taunt to take control of them. Maybe with different 'size' restrictions like Spirits (ie Rathalos takes up more than one slot due to it's size and damage).
Sounds great on paper but this argument doesnt hold weight in practice, unless you're seriously going to explain to me how characters like Alucard are too shallow, yet Pirhana Plant or Wii Fit are fine. But then I'm saying this as someone who hates items even casually, especially since they powercrept so hard in 4, So ATs are mostly a useless feature to me. Id rather just have more fighters.
Honestly I'd love a barebones copy/paste play as an AT-system (as long as the ATs can be KO'd, so no Andross or Pong). It'd give me a few options to sort of play as a few characters that will (probably never be playable unless a new Smash game is released. I don't mind gimping myself for a little bit with characters that don't have full movesets as I usually play for fun with friends anyways. Anyhow, me and my friends are having a lot of fun thinking up Monkey Paw-wishes for DLC characters. For example, one of my friends really wants Phoenix Wright (but hates Apollo Justice), so the deal was an Ace Attorney DLC with Apollo Justice as a fighter and Phoenix as a Mii-costume. Post yours and see what people can come up with to absolutely ruin your idea. I'll start: I want a Nier(or Automata) rep, any will do
As much as I'd love 2B in Smash, her presence in Soul Calibur VI probably rules it out.
Doomguy.
what unspoken rule is there that says "a guest character can't appear in more than 1 fighting game"
Or Master Chief. Either one.
The DLC list is obviously going to be Banjo, Doomguy, Artorias and Ryu Hayabusa
Doomguy gets in, but it's his Doom 3 design and he only gets a machinegun and melee moves.
I see you saw that search engine "leak" too.
To think of how metal a soundtrack would arrive as well.

I've said this in the past, but I'd actually like it if we had Assist Trophies of all the playable characters (with maybe throwing the Pokémon characters in Poké Balls instead). Should that happens, it would mean that characters who are AT-only can potentially have a chance to be promoted to full-on playability later on via DLC, rather than Assist Trophies essentially being a de-facto "deconfirmed list". It would probably lift much of the hate off of Assist Trophies as a concept, too. And with how we already have Ditto working, it would probably be trivially easy to set up. Just that the AT character would be picked at random from the entire roster, rather than mimicking the fighter who summoned them. For the purposes of avoiding confusion, perhaps it could only summon characters who aren't already fighting in that match. It would also mean that characters you don't pick very often could still show up to help, and maybe even inspire you to play them.
As neat of an idea it could be, I feel like making the playable characters have a chance of showing up as an assist trophy would just undermine the other, non-playable characters that are assist trophies, on top of.. not really having any reason to show up as assist trophies while also being playble.
Have them pull at a lower rate than dedicated AT-only characters, then?
Why would a Dark Souls character be in Smash Bros?
I feel like we rayman fans are a vocal minority by now
I'll admit that not having a Ubi guest rep is fucking weird because at this point they're just straight up making new flagship Nintendo titles for them.
