Persona 5 isn't getting a Switch port anytime soon and FFVII wasn't on a Nintendo console up until this year. That criteria no longer applies if the character is iconic/recognizable enough.
Characters don't even need to be iconic anymore. Its just a crap shoot due to how many Joke characters they've done.
I think it matters as long as the series that the character has originated from was on or started on a Nintendo console, and even then Persona Q2 exist and Cloud has appeared on Nintendo games before the port and Smash (although I am not sure if side appearances count). A Dark Souls character would be the first to technically break all the rules of how a third-party character seem to be 'allowed' in; this is of course, if there is any actual restrictions they apply to guest characters. It's still interesting how there seems to be a common pattern or theme between certain third party characters, but again it could be just a bunch of pure coincidences.
There's always been "patterns" that are usually always broken every game. Like when Sonic and Snake got it, it was then changed to "Nintendo only" to "Have been on a Nintendo console" until Cloud came out. Now the excuse is "Series has history on Nintendo consoles". Part of me kind of just wants somebody like Master Chief (Even tho I'm pretty sure he was already deconfirmed) to get in the game so that I can see the "rule" stretched even further.
I'd have mixed feelings if the list is real. I'd be extremely hyped for Banjo, somewhat hyped for Doomguy, and would at least respect Hayabusa given his history with Nintendo. I'm just not a fan of Dark Souls, though, so any character from there will elicit little more than a "huh, okay" from me. At least Artorias has a neat design.
It's a DLC. They want to *sell* this to you. They won't do a joke character as a paid DLC - Plant doesn't count given it was more of a cute bonus, not a "you can buy this with 6 bucks" kinda thing.
Both of those series started on Nintendo consoles. their franchises have huge, long term relationships with Nintendo. why do we have to have this fucking conversation every month
Thinking there's any rhyme or reason for characters being in Smash is exactly what Sakurai doesn't want you to think about. Stop trying to draw conclusions.
Smash is a sort of celebration of videogames. So really, any iconic videogame character could appear in it. We already most of the big representatives and icons of the industry which is fucking nuts. Whoever comes next will surely be a carefully chosen guest for said celebration. Smash Ultimate is that kind of one in a few decades deal. I don't think we'll see something of this magnitude with so much love for a long time. I believe the next Smash will not surpass this one in any shape unless they sacrifice Sakurai. The price of it would be too great.
I am just tired of people making weird assumptions about series and characters being related or not, they’re consistently wrong and it hurts. Anyone can get in, that was the entire point of the post Joker reveal interview. The recent fake leak hurts though, because outside of part of one character, everyone is assuming that none of the new characters are going to be female
maybe people have said in in 4 already, but I am pretty confident this will be the last Smash game that is really sticking to the formula. I don't expect the next game to be "just smash but better" if you will. So in that aspect - I can see why people are very passionate about their character wishes, this will likely be the last chance. I'm keeping my personal hopes up one of the four will be Rayman, obviously one shouldnt fucking harass a dev that probably doesnt influence the choice as much as you'd like, but it would put a small frown on my face if it didn't happen.
I wouldn't mind if Ultimate gotvthe Mari Kart 8 treatment.
Ultimate will be continously ported over to next gen consoles with new content thrown on top of it. It's pretty obvious due to them future proofing.
I would argue that Corrin is a joke but thats for different reasons entirely.
FE in general, man, what happened? I started with Path Of Radiance, and the last one I enjoyed was Awakening. After that it feels like a totally different series with the same gameplay, the spark is just gone for me.
ah, I see it's the 15th again. see you in a month when I have 5 Ts
I mostly see a reboot of the formula with a new base roster under a new director. It's just so hard to see Smash without Sakurai. He's the one who made it possible for the craziness of the 3rd party inclusion and how much work was put into it. This is Magnum Opus. If he leaves, Smash will be very, very different. It could be a welcoming change or the final nail on the coffin (highly doubtful because of how Smash as a concept is just so good for business). Whatever the future of Smash is after Ultimate will be VERY different from what we're used to. Altho, porting the same game and improving on it wouldn't be a bad idea. The biggest work on it would be renewing the rights to everything, from characters to songs. Second being reanimating new moves, remodeling characters like Link, voicelines, etc. SmUsh is a good foundation and on it's way to be a AAA Mugen at this point. 90 fucking characters when this whole DLC will be done. 90. With a possibility for more...
Eh, DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 has like 120 characters (this is a joke) (budokai tenkaichi 3 does have over 120 characters though)
Echoes is pretty good. Three Houses is looking mighty fine, too. I wish Fates didn't taint the reputation of the series to the point where everyone associates it with feet, incest, and touching.
Don't forget "Tits McGee" Camilla.
Fates doesn't scare me as much as some of the costumes in heroes.
hey now f. robin summer costume is god-like. i would pay 20$ to use it in smash
Heroes is a designated cute-side thing that shouldn't represent the series as a whole or should be used as a foundation of what one should think of the series. Some info on Three houses was seemingly leaked and apparently that game will have skinship again - with the exception that it's done in a more classy way, where you are simply talking and drinking tea while basically staring at eachother. Still fucking weird, but hey. just please, I want to talk fire emblem without someone mentioning: too many sword fighters haha all clones big boob haha anime fanservice chrom, unga bunga
can we just not make FE the main topic of discussion in this thread, literally every conversation about it in here is just as productive as dropping slabs of concrete on top of each other do y'all think we're getting any kind of smash info before E3?
Nintendo won't announce a character at an event they don't run. If you think they will you ate to much Steveposting crap
Wasn't Joker announced at the Game Awards?
I should have worded it better. I meant like events they won't have a heavy hand in. Nintendo has no hand in the Minecraft event at all.
If this leak is real, then there better be more DLC characters in the future and hopefully one of them is Crash Bandicoot.
Nintendo would be missing an opportunity if they stopped adding characters after the first season pass especially given that this is our smash bros game for this nintendo generation. Let's have this fucker lookin like a weeb mugen character select screen. Like the only thing casting doubt on me is the fact that it's nintendo and they're like the monkeys paw of video games.
I mean, I'd normally agree, but we're already getting more unique newcomers from DLC than Smash 4 did, plus the act of bringing back every veteran ever is nothing to scoff at. Doesn't the roster screen already resemble something close to MUGEN? To be clear, I'd absolutely adore more characters too - I'm mainly just saying that, at some point, Sakurai deserves a break, and I don't know who else has the chops to bring in new characters.
