I know this is an old post but Sakurai has two options. 1. Taking the time to create an entirely new Smash bros which would have less characters and stages but still will take a lot if time to develop as they are new assets, UI, music, and coding. 2. Take the time to port over the game that is already made and add new stuff on top of it which would ultimately (no pun intended) take less time and stress. 3. Do nothing and everyone would complain about Smash after Switch's online inevitably shuts down within 10 years. I'm still thinking number 2 would be a lot less stressful on the man.
4.sakurai steps away from smash and someone else takes the reigns
He has tried several times to step away. He only made Melee after seeing the surprisingly positive reception to 64, for Brawl he was called back by Iwata himself, for Smash4 he was "uncomfortable" with being completely hands-off, and for this one, we don't know the full story yet, but it looks to me like he's just embracing his destiny with the series. It's more successful than everything else he's ever made combined, and is why we in the west even know his name.
Angel Densetsu (1992, colorized)
if he didn't work on Smash he'd still be "the Kirby guy who quit Nintendo because he got tired of sequels"
Sakurai is talented enough that if he hadn't devoted ten collective years or so of his life to making Smash Bros games he'd probably have come up with some creative games that had a chance at becoming big names.
My latest creation... IS COMPLETE https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/228820/43c01f13-1703-451e-ad44-6936fddd3cc8/whomps.jpg WHOMP'S FORTRESS Does this really need an introduction? Inspired by that excellent BoB custom stage and recreated from memory alone (yes really), the Whomp King's abode features tons of playable space, and multiple levels of the eastern facade simulated with platforms, so it feels pretty close to just playing the level normally from a fixed camera angle. That was the most important part for me, as usual, an authentic feel. Whomp King pacing impatiently above, Thwomps that actually move (and yes, they even squash you, watch out), and tons of little details like the metal cap and a bob-omb buddy in the background, this map was a joy to build from start to finish. Easily my favorite yet, and that is REALLY saying something. Just a shame I can't make it more elaborate, oh well. Coming soon! This, Great Chapel, and one other map I'm currently still working on will all be released at once, stay tuned!

Seeing where the affect is centered makes me think "When you realize you're not as spry as you use to be"
That Rocket League stage made me so happy <3

https://smashboards.com/threads/newcomer-dlc-speculation-discussion.453424/page-195#post-23349070 Things I find interesting from Sakurai's book. - He knows some are serious, but he doesn't think characters like Ironman and Goku will happen. (p27) - DLC could say shortening the life span of its franchise. For Smash those characters could join in next time. But Smash is also not a title to think about continuation so doing his best every time. (p27) - He wants Smash to be more casual and see non-competitive tournaments. Smash is a party game. But he also knows he is not the one to plan those. (p31) - In Smash for days, there was restriction of a time span to offer updates and 3DS had a limited number of times to update. So Wii U version had to do the same. This is why Lucas, Roy, and Ryu released at the same time. (p33) - If it's a one time purchase type of game, then it's more efficient for the company to start making the next game than keep updating. (p59) - Updates are normal thing these days, but still they are voluntary service. (p59) - He always thinks it's important to hear voices from people not speaking up. Real beginners don't speak up. (p61) - The plan of Smash Ultimate completed December 16th 2015. It's a coincidence, but was the same day of the last Smash for direct. (p63) - He is not thinking of doing Smash ballot again. It was used in Smash Ultimate's development very much. (p63) - Beyonetta was the first pick among realisable characters. Above her, there were old veterans like Snake and other characters that were already tried negotiating but got rejected. (p63) - He was making the plans for Smash Ultimate during the vacation he got after Smash for DLC was done. (p69) - He treats character's individuality as its own game itself. All the unique systems certain characters has are all newly built just for him/her. (p69) - It's already had proven true that joining as a character in Smash has advertising effect. (p99) - He played through beta version of Zelda BotW to the end in 2 days during the Smash Ultimate development because he needed to know how new Link works before anyone else. (p125) - He thinks games should not be created based on researched data alone and saying games only born to imitate other games are misfortune. Those data should be used for marketings or managements, not to plan new games. Old data are old. (p133) - (Speaking of Super Nintendo World) 60 billion yen is enough to make every Smash game up to Ultimate and more with couple ten billion of changes. Not many Japanese games have budgets over 10 billion yen. (p139) - He wish there were Smash Area in Super Nintendo World. (p139) - Smash Ultimate's DLC wasn't a thing at the time around Famitsu column vol. 546 January 11th 2018, and it was planned without the developers will. (p165) - DLC developments in general take time, so by the time of the release, the market will be much smaller than it used to be. DLC business is very risky than people might think. (p165) - They are not something sell that much so it's difficult to gather staffs. Sometimes better to move on to the next game. (p165) - He is not fond of the idea of the season pass. Its a little scary to buy without knowing the contents. (p165) - Omega and battlefield for every stages take a lot more work than people might think. (p187) - HAL Laboratory, Inc. is still on the credits list, but not involved in the development anymore. (p188) - If you think about the completion of the development, bringing back everyone is not something you should do. (p189) - The team was very careful of leaks at E3 2018. They didn't use printed promotional materials to avoid leaks. "Everyone is here" wasn't known even in Nintendo so the when it happened Nintendo staffs were also screaming. (p190) - Smash tend to have characters from older series. But just old characters wouldn't make Smash worthy. If there is no new series, then the selection of the characters will be from the old series. (p199) - People say "why they can't do this easy stuff?" but there is always a reason for that, One correction could cause another bug. (p205) - The story idea of World of Light was already existed since Smash Brawl. (p208) - He doesn't follow internets reaction so didn't know all the fan predictions. (p209) - The idea of the Spirits is kind of the last resort. He is not sure he'll be making another gameplay like the Spirits. (p211) - There was a plan to include a map like the Spirits to the Adventure Mode in Smash Melee. (p211) - He said he took a long vacation, but actually he was just taking breaks as the calendar goes. He has a cat so he can't go for a long trip. (p214) - By the time of the end of March 2019, the online win ratio of every character are very close to each other at the point he almost thinks better not to change anymore. (p216) - There are metas, so just certain characters were strong at that time is not good enough reason to make them change. (p216)
Sounds like balance changes are going to be very conservative from here on out, and Ultimate is definitely not going to be the last Smash game.
- He was making the plans for Smash Ultimate during the vacation he got after Smash for DLC was done. (p69) The man seriously doesn't rest.
for the love of God please say sike
Luckily Sakurai isn't on the balancing team. They might do stuff anyway.
Little mac still needs twelve jumps
Yeah that's because all of the Little Mac players are choosing walk off stages in their stage rules
"- He wants Smash to ... see non-competitive tournaments. ...that's just casual play. that's literally just casual play. this man wants dry water and heavy air.
iiassume he means tournaments but with variety. items and no banned stages. you know, like how they've been doing at strictly nintendo-hosted tournaments.
The reason we have organized tournaments is because people want to rank their skill against other people. Turning on casual play kills that since RNG becomes a huge factor. It's like making a Mario Party tournament.
Nintendo hosted non-competitive tournaments for both Sm4sh and Ultimate. from what i remember they were shitshows. That being said, it's not like kids or bad players can't go to a local venue or even a bigger venue like GUMS and play for a bit and have fun. Most venues cost max $50 to attend, and depending on how early doors are opened you could get a LOT of playtime in just from friendlies. I've said this before - we straight up had an 8-year-old enter a big NE event bracket, and his dad had to ask the better players to go easy on him because he was just there to have fun. If you're interested in having fun, even if you're a kid, it's about going out and playing at the venues, not making the game more "casual" and encouraging dumb shit like 4-person timed free-for-all broken-items-on tourneys. I have nothing but respect for Sakurai but he really doesn't understand the difference between a game being fun and a game being casual. A LOT of the stuff shoved into later games makes them less fun. Certain assist trophies, the stupid-ass free kill/win Gust Bellows and scarab items, all of the items just basically being home-run bat levels of powerful, losing a lot of fun items like the red koopa shell, almost every Final Smash being turned into a guaranteed kill with an hour long cinematic if you hit it instead of cool gimmick-y stuff like DK's jungle beat kongos and Wario Man, and the general stage design even. Poke Floats was so simplistic, just a bunch of random pokemon models floating around the map in a set pattern, but it was still super fun. You know how fun Palutena's Temple is, or 75m, or basically any stage with Hazards? Not fun at all.
