Maybe not but I'm totally expecting a Christmas release.
I'm late to this but https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/217364/4b147d68-a6a6-4d20-92ff-ccd72493d71b/image.png That's a really unfortunate spot to have the headline cut off.
I'm going to go out on a limb on my prediction and say they're going to reveal 2 of the Smash DLC characters during the direct; one at the start with low-medium hype like Erdrick from Dragon Quest, then a haymaker at the end, something like Dante or Doomguy. The first character will be released unexpectedly soon, like mid-June, and the second will be released August-September.
I feel like Joker got delayed somehow, his reveal to release time was so awkward.
Didn't Sakurai say somewhere that Nintendo pushed for an announcement at the Game Awards? Joker was probably revealed before practically any work was done on him.

Just to fuck with people Animal Picrossing.
Gotta say though, having the final character reveal for Smash Ultimate prior to release be Joker instead of Piranha Plant really helped end the pre-Ultimate hype train end on a much better note.
So I'm betting two character reveals. One for the end of summer and one for the end of Fall.
https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/50586/online-play-in-super-mario-maker-2-limited-to-randoms-only The addition of online multiplayer in Super Mario Maker 2 comes with a major caveat according to a Nintendo representative at a press event last week: you can only play with random players online, whether you’re seeking out co-op or competitive play. The only way to play multiplayer specifically with friends is through one system or local wireless play. Glad to see that online money sink continues to improve the various games that uses it.
That's so fucking stupid. That was the thing I was hyped up most about and now it's gone.
I'm fucking mad they removed the weird mushroom.
Nintendo is the Switch's biggest competitor
https://www.polygon.com/2019/5/28/18641683/super-mario-maker-2-multiplayer-mode-preview That competition will be more direct in the sequel; players can team up or battle with friends, both locally and over the internet. Polygon says it has online friend co-op, I can't find anything else about it beyond these two publications.
Nintendo’s reasoning is that, with global leaderboards, the matchmaking for competitive play would be compromised if you could play with friends. That limitation also extends to co-op play as well despite those not being leaderboard driven. That has got to be the dumbest reason to justify not having basic multiplayer functionality that you're charging for. Just don't allow friends to access the leaderboard, or better yet have a seperate leaderboard. Fuck you Nintendo. The article does highlight how Mario Maker 1 had a slew of content updates, so it might just be they aren't willing to say "we don't have playing with friends ready for release", but who knows. Missing the Mystery Mushroom is a mystery given it should copy-paste over pretty easily. I imagine it might have something to do with 3rd party licenses and they didn't want to include partial support when MM1 supported every amiibo at the time IIRC.
I trust Polygon more than a random Nintendo news source. Thank you.
So I just bought and played through Katana Zero. Man what a great game with a compelling story. I loved the gameplay loop, although I wish there were some more challenging levels. The game was a bit short but I was super engrossed with the world
wait, that's gone too??? i know there's no amiibo support & no costumes but did they remove the weird mushroom too? that'd be a big disappointment for me, i loved that thing
There's new content coming up everywhere now. There IS 4 player offline coop on one switch, it seems, but only for the coop mode and not the competitive mode.
Last thing I need is for my brother to punch me in the mouth after I pushed him into a pit for the fiftieth time
Nevermind I'm being stupid. There's no confirmation on that, that's me getting mushroom names mixed up
Simpleflips seen crying into his Bup. The instant Nintendo revealed multiplayer in SMM2 he was like "let's go, we're never going to race Mario Maker 1 again when this comes out". If this is true, what the fuck Nintendo. I'm going to wait to see what Nintendo does to clarify, but I'm really on the fence about buying SMM2 because of how reliant it is on online and how much I hate the notion of rewarding Nintendo for deploying such a subpar online service by giving them money for it. If it's true that Nintendo does not intend for you to be able to play online multiplayer with friends, I'm probably just going to skip SMM2, at least for a while. Nintendo keeps on taking one step forward and then one step backwards onto a rake and it's absolutely baffling.

Why would anyone in their right mind play Witcher 3 on a Switch? It doesn't even run very well on a PS4.
https://twitter.com/VinLAURiA/status/1133403122951368704 I don't care how absurd your levels get, game. I grew up with a childhood of Chip's Challenge 1+2 and you cannot defeat me.

Konami should put the fucking metal gear collection on switch, then I'll be pumped

I don't know why they haven't done a Switch or PC port of MGS2 and 3, they're sitting on tons of money. I don't think 1 or 4 would ever make the jump though.
how can a company fail so miserably at pushing their online service as bad as nintendo and what do they have against online co-op
