This is one of those cases where I wish Facepunch still had the big gay rainbow, because this is rather optimistic considering all the projects Valve has worked in the last 5 years that are stuck in development hell and/or canceled.
I know they have tons of canceled projects, but Valve never publicly talked about things like the robot game or untitled fantasy rpg, they are talking about Artifact and three new VR games, and they know they'd get tons of hate if they do another Ep3 and just stop talking about the unreleased games they've mentioned before.
I'm pretty sure that half of all Valve's projects are someone going "This is a great idea" and then getting bored half way through and abandoning it.
I'd definitely be in shock for a bit. Either all my hype and care that I've lost would return, or it would be replaced by cynicism and caution.
In what sense is what I said embarrassing? I don't follow.
To be fair though, i'm sure if we could get a look behind the curtain of many game development studios we would see that they all have a large assortment of projects that never leave idea or early conceptual/production phase before being shelved, or outright cancelled. It's just the way this works. Brilliance doe snot work on an assembly line.
