To be honest it just looks like he's bobbing up and down...
His motion needs to be forward and backwards, too.
Cooked this up in some spare time i had. From Metalocalypse again
This was originally supposed to be a lipsync test using MaxofS2D's tutorial, but Duke's faceposing is somewhat limited. So I had to manually "lip-sync" him.

Also, I would like to know if he looks like he's breathing believably to you guys.
how to do a quick, dirty, but good looking breath
make two poses, one normal and one with the pelvis VERY SLIGHTLY DOWN and the whole upper body progressively bending forwards as you go higher
order keys like this:
bended > ref > bended > ref > bended
(you need the 2 extra ones on the side for auto tangents / TCB)
progressively offset limbs as you go down the hierarchy
example:
pelvis position : -30 > 0 > 30 > 60 > 90
pelvis rotation : -27 > 3 > 33 > 63 > 93
spine hub : -21 > 7 > 37 > 67 > 97
etc.
you can also have the shoulders bob up and down and offset them relative to the pelvis pos by 7/8 frames maybe
in the end you should have a loopable 60 frames animation
you can refine it however you want, you can end up with something that looks similar to this relatively quickly. the important part is the timing of your offsets.

oh yeah for bonus points compile your breath loop as a delta animation and import it as well
sfm imports delta animations correctly it's a godsend

I have had many problems uploading this video to youtube because the quality and the darkness of the video, in this last attempt to light a little better and atleast looks a little better.
Please watch the video in 720p
this is my second attempt to make a short film in source filmmaker, any opinion is welcome!
In my opinion its too dark, and the snow make viewer look for the snow rather than what is the victim look for. Not sure, but you will have to get darker map (such as ctf_doublecross), but as the second try it's really well made.
Did some more animating on my scene. Working on cleaning it up a bit.

prolly gonna give up now
Highly WIP - only working on the faceposing right now. ten points for whoever knows the reference.

Just finished uploading this, some practice in keyframing and camera movements.

It still needs some work (that damn dog tag) , so I might continue on with it.
Does anyone know whats causing (and how to fix) that god awful color banding or whatever you call it?
ended up redoing this one

Is that animation based or refined off of this one?

To be honest it looks horribly overdone. Looks more like he's waving up and down than actual breathing, unless he's tired from running a lot, of course. Make the waves much smaller.

The problem with the dark is with youtube because on my pc I have the video with a lot more lighting, and thanks, I put much effort in making this video

What codec/filetype are you rendering with?
Anybody got a sniper model with rolled down sleeves? I would like one for a video set in a snowy landscape

it'd be cool if the camera was slowly zooming out while he said it. the lipsyncing is a bit off too, but the lighting and rendering looks great
Is that animation based or refined off of this one?

yeah, almost entirely re-animated off this one

I know it is. It's /much/ smaller in the actual Gmod 13 animations — this gif is for the purposes of demonstration! :p
-snip- I fixed the issue. Had to go to a previous version.
Here is a shot scene from Loose Cannon involving Blutarch Mann and Radigan Conagher. I do realize I am using the wrong Blutarch, but I didn't realize until after I uploaded this to Youtube, so I will fix it when I can.

Any criticism? It was made in about 2 hours not counting rendering, using Source Filmmaker and Windows Live Movie Maker for editing.

I do not use MPEG4, because after the representation is much darker than the original video, and when I try to render in H.264 the program closes.
Finally finished. I know the cubemaps are pink, I can't build them, SFM gives me a dll error when I try

I think the 'S's, and 'E' in Earth could use work. In fact, I think you would do well to work on all the hard consonants, like 'B' in beast, and the 'w' in wrath.
Dramatically, I think it would be better if he was talking to at least on other character.

i mean that's great but you can just import a sequence and work from that, or if you really want go to a model that HAS the idle animation you want, export as dmx (delta whatever) then import it. people used this to get scout anims on engineer and it looks so clean. to me there's few reasons you'd need to do a from scratch anim unless you're working with a model that doesnt really have humanoid movements or not a biped skeleton
where are my Vampire the masquerade models!
