• How do I create custom skins for the characters in SFM?

I asked this in the official Steam forums for Source Filmmaker, but I haven't gotten an answer yet so I thought I'd ask here as well. Here's what I've tried: I went to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\ tf\materials\models\player\scout" and copied 2 files and renamed them. From scout_blue.vmt to scout_new.vmt and scout_blue.vtf to scout_new.vtf. I then used VTFEdit to change "$basetexture" "models\player\scout\scout_blue" to "$basetexture" "models\player\scout\scout_new" I left everything else in the .vmt alone. What I need to know is what else I need to change to get it to show up in SFM when I try to change the Scout's skin. As of right now when I right-click on Scout1 in the Animation Set Editor and choose "Set Skin" I have the numbers 0-4. Through a suggestion by someone, I backed up the original files and renamed the new files to the old names. I then exported a .tga file from the original and made some changes. I then made it scout_blue.vtf. I closed SFM and restarted it. I added a new scout to a new scene but it's still the normal blue scout. It doesn't have any of the modifications I made to it's textures. There must be something missing.
Adding more skins for one model isn't just that simple. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Multiple_Skins_for_a_Single_Model
Alter scout_blue.vmt to point to scout_new.vtf
Thanks Combine 177 for that link. But there's no "$texturegroup skinfamilies" in the scout_blue.vmt file, so I'm guessing I have to look for that line somewhere else? Smashman: Actually, I backed up the original scout_blue.vtf and altered the copy to have the changes I wanted this way the original scout_blue.vmt could stay unchanged. But it still shows up as the normal blue scout in SFM for some reason. Here's what I changed:
Well if you want to add skins, you'll need to recompile to model. You can overwrite skins, that is it.
But I did overwrite the skin, it still shows up normal in SFM!
You're overwriting the normal model skin, not the hwm one. [editline]26th July 2012[/editline] In tf_movies
There are only head skins in the HWM folder.
Re-read what I said and then look back at that screenshot and then realise the problem.
I see now. I missed your edit where you mentioned the "tf_movies" directory. That's what the problem was! I got it working now! Thank you for your help!
