Giant mosquitoes? I told you bro.
It keeps happening, clearly.
How did you designate out those corners around the staircase? The walls are all natural, and I can't see how the dwarves managed to dig them out. As for the double thick parts, we could dig out every other one and make rows of statues amongst engraved walls...
Finally home, will start my turn ASAP.

It didn't take long after my arrival to notice one thing: Either the last Dwarf in charge of this place suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder, or they've been changing leader like a dwarf changes moods, as shown by the right half of the fortress being very orderly and calculated, while the left is less logical than one of those tree-hugging elves.
First thing I shall do is expand the main dining hall by adding glorious kitchens and a separate food storage room:

I will also create a more orderly farming room and up food production exponentially.
[editline]17th February 2012[/editline]
I also found the two dumbest looking Dwarfs I could find and gave them a pick each, I wouldn't put it past them to die before the season's end but that will just be two less useless food drains. I also appointed 6 new farmers to kick the production into high gear.
My next plans are to expand the production area (especially metal smelting and wood burning) and retake the outside world for Dwarfkind.

Hurray, the mosquitoes have retreated for now, probably intimidated by the power of this very phallic looking structure protruding from the mountainside:

As you can see, the mosquitoes are back in full force (yes, all 180 are mosquitoes).
The problem is it's slaughtering my FPS, I've been playing for 3 hours soon and I'm still at mid spring. That and half of the dwarves are thirsty, but only some go to the well to drink (not sure if it's the insane amount of mosquitoes messing up their pathing to find water or what).
We should have probably modded out mosquitos due to the bugs they have.
It's not a bug, it's a feature. Well, you know, the fortress is in the eastern swamps...
I think you'll find that the mosquitos are a bug. :rimshot:
It's more how large the groups they come in that's a bug - it slows down systems a lot.
it's like whatever region I start in, I get 100+ mosquitos.
they're a BUG.
they're bugs at least.

Been expanding the production district. Those long halls will be filled with burners, furnaces and smelters. With 132 dwarves, the one thing that isn't lacking is the cheap manpower that can slave at the furnaces enveloped in smoke and ash for 16 hours a day.
As you can see on the left, I've had the dwarfs dig out a room that can be irrigated by opening a flood gate, it's easy to expand and easy to irrigate.
Also it looks like the mosquitoes are pretty docile, in fact they are getting hunted relentlessly but they are yet to harm anyone.
I won't be making my deadline of tonight though, unless those mosquitoes suddenly disappear and my FPS shoot up.

I've been fixing up the entrance with a raisable bridge that will act as a makeshift portcullis. I've also been digging out the sides of the main corridor, where marksdwarfs will be able to pelt anything trying to enter the fortress.
I also started working on the barracks as you can see to the right, figured the best place to put them would be near the most probable frontline.
Most I've been doing is just scrambling to create a farming system that can sustain all the dwarves, got pretty close to starvation a few times but it seems the farming is now gaining momentum and the storage is filling.
Oh and see that dwarf standing there where a wall block should be? He's been there for months now, it used to be a garbage dump that got filled up with thousands of rocks, and now he's removing them to build the wall, one by one.
Bear in mind that marksgoblins would be able to shoot through those fortifactions too, but they would probably get shot before having a chance of killing a marksdwarf.

Only elite ones thankfully, but yeah if there are elite ones it would be better to engage them in some other way.
Also we have a serious vampire problem:

Vampire-related death toll is at 10 now (and that's just this year).
[editline]17th February 2012[/editline]
One, who I suspect being a vampire due to his sudden aggression, has been struck down when trying to attack the captain:

Also Orkel's going to get an aneurysm.
Try locking 5 dwarves up at a time, and see if one of them isn't getting hungry. There's your vampire.
Try locking 5 dwarves up at a time, and see if one of them isn't getting hungry. There's your vampire.
Well the problem is, we're nearing 190 dwarfs now, it would take ages.
Better than losing legendary dwarves though.
Better than losing legendary dwarves though.
True, but it'll have to wait because everything is going to stopping the captain of the guard from exterminating half the fortress with his extremely harsh punishments (he punches them once, then kicks their head in in an extremely methodical fashion that creeps me out).
Next player will have to try to weed out the vampires, doubt I'll find any in time (mid winter already) unless I'm really lucky.

Just when I though everything was going to be ok, a titan arrives.
I'm a complete vampire hunting newbie (well, they are new :v:) but I'll hopefully find the git.
I'm a complete vampire hunting newbie (well, they are new :v:) but I'll hopefully find the git.
Gits. There must be like 5 of them.
Anyway I sealed off the entrance with the bridge as I do not want to risk the currently weak military taking on a titan. Military is under training and I've ordered some iron breastplates and helms (which can later be melted when a better material is available).

Aaaaand Spring has arrived!
http://www.mediafire.com/?da589ppecck5e38
I shall leave a few notes for my successor:
-Vampires are about, grab your whip and holy water because you'll need it
-Thanks to our beloved Captain and his appreciation for the safety of his citizens, we're going to need a lot more coffins, the crypt is located on the second lowest level
-A titan roams the outdoors, be careful
-The food production should hold, but booze production is non-existent and that's just not Dwarfy
-The slave labour area is not complete, needs more workshops and more useless Dwarfs assigned to work at them
I shall return in 7 years.
Downloading it now, let's see how this goes!
(though it's getting late, I'll still get an hour or so on tonight)

HHFHGFHGFHGRHFGF THIS IS WHY IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSTALLED
OH DEAR CHRIST, THERE'S NO BOOZE!
OH DEAR CHRIST, THERE'S NO BOOZE!
Never has been either I think (I didn't see any production facilities).
On the plus side, that farm room should provide you with plenty of ingredients for the booze.
[editline]17th February 2012[/editline]
I'm actually surprised because apart from the vampires draining babies every night, the captain being a psychotic mass murderer, there being no booze, being invaded by legions of giant mosquitoes every now and then, and a titan having forced everyone inside, I'd say it's going pretty well.
The booze shortage is slowing the dwarves so much, I think. I've ordered 3 brewers to cover, but will mostly be assessing damage today and maybe do spring today, then the rest tomorrow.
Also, I'm about 70% sure that the mayor is a fucking vampire :v:

Forget the mayor, it's that fucking kitten I tell you. I already busted him when he cold bloodedly murdered 3 infants, the animals are plotting something and it stinks to the top. I tried exposing them by convicting that kitten but the less sharp dwarves saw it as a joke and got pissed.
Oh god, 2 cold cases and like 15 unsolved cases. Justice may be for the next person, I'm just struggling to get some booze up before summer! (and ideally get that goose and gander breeding so we have an eggselent food production capability)
Oh god, every time a pot is made, it's used to store the plump helmets before the brewer gets to it. Then the brewer cancels the job, so no booze is made, thus production of boze slows again. I'm going to get 4 craftsdwarfs shops on pots alone, to try to outbuild the storage needs, so I can start brewing.
It's the mayor. He has multiple aliases. It was really weird when I assigned the office to him and the bowyer was also selected. I just realized that.
Just woke up, should have spring out by 9:30, and hopefully be done by 3:00 or so, though I'm getting some FPS issues due to ancient PC, and boozeless dwarfs!
[editline]18th February 2012[/editline]
Well, it all started with no booze, and our wood situation was dire. Someone had ordered the creation of an industrial amount of ash, I don't know what to do with that, so I will relegate it to my successor.
Initial fortress shots:
Main level http://imgur.com/5PX8U
Crafting Level (main level -1) http://imgur.com/rfGhz
Main Gate (main level +1) http://imgur.com/iV2IP
Sniper Tower (main level +2) http://imgur.com/tPheS
The spirits of Urist Asmeldur and Tobul Stukonrovod, former miners are rumored to be lingering around the halls, I must order memorials engraved to them.

There is an ancient one-eyed gecko, with a long trunk, gigantic in size, foul spittle dripping from it's mouth. I must try to deal with that, too.
I begin orders for an excavation from the stairs down to the farm, to the kitchens for our great dining hall, hoping that this will expediate the process of brewing our plants. I also order a small room designated, to hold the goose and gander we own.
I also yell at a few of the worthless hands in the dining hall - "WE NEED SOME FUCKIN' BOOZE LADS, STUMPY, LAZY AND DOPEY OVER THERE, ALL START BREWING!"
I also gave orders to slaughter a load of the cats - we're going to need to brew all of the plants we can.
I also ordered two more of those slackers to earn their keep, chucked a pick at them, and hoped that it'd improve their productivity.
Dumat was found dead today, drained of blood entirely. This situation is truly dire. One of my little birds also informed me that the mayor was seen around the area. I'll keep an eye on it.
Kubuk was found dead immediately afterwards. We might have to quarantine the fortress.
12 Granite - We finally made some booze. Only 5 barrels o' rum, though, that gold's mine.
We really need a large communal dorm - that way we can catch these foul creatures whilst they are feasting!
The Child, Thikut demanded a load of stuff that we couldn't do, and went insane. Strange boy, the military had to put him down like a rabid dog.

Orkel's gonna flip a shit.
Oh fuck, another load of migrants (30ish)
I fear we'll lose them to the titan.
I sent out the military, and they slew the beast! We lost two migrants to it, and I fear that the axedwarf Zasit Ochrefin may not survive, as her foot was torn off by the beast.
Oh well, at least we can call off the burrow commands, and get some wood!

Spring is nearly over, but the alcohol production is slowly increasing, and we're grabbing wood from outside. Murder those foul trees!
I've ordered all non-noble or soldier beds to be removed, and am constructing a communal dorm, that way we can catch the foul vampires.
19th of Felsite: An elven caravan arrives, but shortly afer, a kobold ambush, and foul thieves come, several of our dwarves perished.
I sent out two of our military dwarves, and they slaughtered the kobold ambush, but the thieves fled. We now have a few more iron spears and shortswords from the scum.
Blah blah, all stuff aside, the FPS issues are starting to REALLY bug me, it's going 4x slower than I expected for some reason :v: My dorfs are moving one square / 2 seconds, this could take all day :v:

:v:
Yeah that was me, we were running really low on food so the idea was to then make a tonne of potash to fertilize the farms. Then I forgot about it when the farming kicked in and they've been making ash for an entire season :v:
Also the captain of the guard is using an artifact hammer, so he should kick some serious ass.
Oh yeah, the captain of the guard's dominated a load of kobolds and the titan. We've not got an ashery and the carpenters aren't inclined to get off their asses and make a barrel, so I can't really make one atm.
We've got 200+ drink now, the titan's dead, and I've added a new bit to the entrance (a quick bridge) so that's a bit better. Also a few more vampire related deaths, but y'know.
I've been keeping it at 0 idlers somehow, despite the fact that next to nothing is being done. I honestly don't know what they're doing that they count as work, because it seems to me that they're doing shit all :v:
Still only mid summer though.
Carved some fortifications in the captain of the guard's room (only good soldier, really) and that should stop vampires from feeding on him...
[editline]18th February 2012[/editline]
Oh, I just realised what caused the FPS hit.
Our 87 giant mosquito friends!
They might deal with the titan, with any luck.
He's dead, all we lost was the left foot of a crappy dwarf and 2 migrants!
Now there's 187 mosquitos. Oh god, we're sealed in, and have wood, but it's slowing FPS to 6.
