In a war lasting seven years, he allies himself with Italy and proceeds to enact wide ranging military, social, and economic reforms, transforming his small and poor Kingdom into one with efficient taxation and conscription policies. Pressing his claims, he went to war with his neighbours, initially with Carinthia. Salzreich noted his upstart actions and declared war, but due to incursions by the Mongolians, was badly damaged, and forced to sue for peace with Sudgrund in order to focus on the Mongolians. Meanwhile, the Sudgrund state further continued with reforms by declaring independence from the Salzreich church and forming their own “Reformed” church, with seperate liturgy and declaring it an independent body from the Aquinist faith. Finally, it declared war on Bavaria, and seized land that the family had laid claim to in the previous centuries, and renamed itself Weißen. Modelled along highly militaristic lines, it is starting to rapidly modernize to compensate for the failings under the Laubergian Reich. However after some short diplomatic dealings Phoenicia soon pulled out and left Misiryaban to fend for itself. Since the Caliph and the government was completely destroyed the country was placed under a military dictatorship by Muhammad the 3rd, but he soon rebuilt an actual government, albiet not in the style of the old government. He created a republic based mostly off of Delian democracy. The old royal castle had the furniture moved out and was reused as a senate building were the each district's representatives would meet and discuss each law. Only one meeting was held. -The Republic quickly begins to print propaganda attacking the Spanish and Bohemians. Unfortunately, the Spanish decide to invade shortly after the Phoenicians demobilize. As the Phoenicians demobilize, they also take the colonies of Misiryaban, leaving the country to just the home islands. In a panic, as Misiryaban loses control of the country, the President tries to contact the bank and mint so they can print and borrow money for the war effort. The bank refuses, and so he is forced to go there with a small guard and to rob the bank for necessary funds, which he uses to purchase the last weapons the Republic can scrape up. This plan goes badly, and the Republican guard attempts to protect the secondary capital as the Spanish come marching in. A brief fight and sounding of guns ends with the Republican guard defeated and the royal family captured and executed. At the last meeting of parliament, a Spanish soldier marches in to inform them that the government had fallen and he required the delegates to leave. They march out of the building; a luxurious specimen built in the medieval period, yet now covered in soot and grime from the nearby factories. The papers of the executive office were covered with proclamations, but as the futility of it became evident, they slowly decayed into simple geometrical patterns drawn upon the paper. It is found that an electric current can be made to flow through a wire by making a coil of copper wire and moving a small magnet through it. Similar discoveries also note that two different metals (such as copper and zinc) separated by moist board, can also produce an electrical current. Finally, these can also apply in reverse. Therefore, by applying an electrical current to a wire in presence of a magnet, one can induce motion. In a spate of excited experiments, researchers manage to also discover a relationship between units of electrical potential, units of electrical resistance, and units of electrical current. (For instance, by increasing the current in a copper wire, one can induce it to heat up. By modifying the resistance to be extremely high, and with enough resources, one can induce a wire to glow extremely hot, and even to give off light (before it burns out of course)). From these experiments, the first batteries, dynamos, motors, earliest attempts at lighting, and electromagnets all come into existence. All require vast amounts of copper if one is to produce these on a large scale, and for the first time since the Bronze Age, it’s a good time to be a copper pit owner. -With the slow liberalisation of the Empire, the Emperor decided that, with the changing times, perhaps adoption of a constitution would be best for the Empire. On the 3rd of December 1015, a Petrine modelled constitutional monarchy is adopted, with the creation of the Bohemian parliament. Jindřich Dobransky, member of the "Liberální strana" (Liberal Party), was elected the first prime minister. Besides the "Liberální strana", the other current political parties are the "Sociálně demokratická strana" (Social Democratic Party), the "Monarchista strana" (Royalist Party, conservative), the "Tomancka strana" (Tomanist Party, communism, named after their party leader, Vlček Toman (basically Titoism)), the "Díogenécka strana" (Diogenist Party, social cynicism, named after Diogenes) and the "Konzervativna liberalna strana" (Conservative liberal party). -With a lot of industrial equipment (and Misiryaban prisoners) being cannibalized from the war, the groundwork for industrialization of the Empire is now underway. The coal and iron rich centres quickly sprout in Bohemia proper along with parts of Poland (so named for the Polans, an ethnic group in the Vistula basin). The ready access to confiscated railway locomotives has allowed Bohemia to become the second country in the world to build a locomotive factory, although production is still small scale and piecemeal. Despite these setbacks, a thin spider’s web of railway lines slowly grow over the Bohemian Empire, linking up industrial centres and later would be of benefit to the military. The second decade saw the kilometres of railway in existence double. -The hot air balloon, along with blueprints and a small number of engineers, is sold to the Phoenicians in return for their wooden frigates (the ones that they couldn’t be bothered or had enough money to convert into paddle steamers), which are used to patrol the Danube and protect the tiny external trade of the Empire. When St Helena begins to become increasingly important, the frigates send supplies and men to the island to build a large star fort on the island, and to use it as a base for the colonization of the New World. A colony is established on the eastern coast, watching over a large bay and having a commanding view of the nearby plains. Perhaps more wisely than the Greeks, they also built a truly massive stone and brick fort in the latest style, armed with 52 heavy guns and stocked full of supplies. The approach is kept clear for roughly half a kilometre, while the town rests on the nearby slope facing the sea. Smaller Martello towers are built on opposite sides of the bay. -The Eastern Empire, the Phoenician Federation and the Bohemian Empire charter a railroad company, each investing a third into it. The company, under the use of many proxy companies, works to build a connected rail network across Europe and North Africa. The plan is perhaps stupid and ambitious in its undertaking (and perhaps pointless in the case of Africa, given the existence of steamships), but the money has been presented and the manufactory owners do not question where the money has come from. The industrial facilities to produce such equipment for the railway initially came mostly from Misiryaban (before it was stripped bare and invaded again), followed by Bohemia (who had the foresight to steal Misiryabans industrial secrets and build their own rival railways before anyone else), and Phoenicia (who stole most of Misiryabans industrial equipment and rebuilt factories for the purpose of building locomotives and rails back home). -With Bohemia having become a very large kingdom, Bohemian king Wenceslaus I Hostiv, had decided the Kingdom is to be named an Empire. As such, the Bohemian Empire is crowned, with Wenceslaus I Hostiv becoming Emperor. A new flag is introduced as well, and to celebrate, missionaries are sent to Armenia to remind them to stay Christian, and if possible, to become the correct type of Christian. -The Khan, having relocated to eastern Europe, declared war on the Bohemian Empire, seemingly with intent to destroy it. The Bohemians, having been completely unprepared for such a war (having until very recently no fortifications or militia system of any kind in the East), decide to bring up their armies to meet the invasion. They meet the Mongolians at the Vistula, and in a four day long battle are eventually forced back despite having a superior number of heavy guns. The tactical manoeuvres and numbers of the Mongols are largely to blame (along with their fondness for using Russian infantry as cannon fodder). The Mongols also take advantage of the Bohemians lack of heavy fortifications outside of the major cities, wreaking havoc upon the countryside and temporarily forcing many cities to accept him as their sovereign and to grant him a tribute in kind and men. Before the Bohemians can recover their forces and try to prevent him moving further, the Khan marches into the open lands of Germany, much of which had never experienced war on any significant scale before. He devastates much of Germany, looting the country for a whole year before pulling out, for his loins had become worn and emptied while his caravans of loot had become overburdened. -The Bohemians eventually manage to force the Mongols to leave Germany and then Bohemia, aided largely by the movements of Polotsk and the Baltic. Reform of the military and railway administration also allowed them to begin to actually outmanoeuvre the Mongols as well. Sieges are lifted and eventually angry peasant mobs armed with muskets and using the railways manage to force the last of the Mongols to leave, while the Bohemian army prevents their return. The damage had however been already done. Salzreich suffered especially badly, with their upstart new neighbour Wei ßen taking advantage and grabbing land left open as the Mongols had effectively destroyed authority. Another state formed in Germany along the North Sea coast, named Baselland. The German states, having grown deeply hostile towards the Bohemians for their inability to defend them, have begun moving towards militarism and reform, seeking to rebuild their countries and having grown more aggressive. With the rise of secularism, religious reform is a hot potato discussed in Germany, with some states starting to split from the Bohemian Orthodoxy (always viewed somewhat as a foreign import) and have begun to move towards more “German” worship. The stirrings of nationalism have also begun, for a “German” identity is starting to form. The Bohemians only had to let the Khan tip the first domino. [img]http://facepunch.com/image.php?u=193052&dateline=1296445519[/img][img]http://u.cubeupload.com/Mackalda2k6/EasternFlag.png[/img] [b]Mackalda2k6 – The Eastern Empire Capital: Byzantium Culture: Greek (Hellenic) State Religion: Christianity (Aquinism) [/b] -Realizing that significant problems have been posed by the production of wrought iron into steel, a new process has been introduced to fix the last crucial gap, and to reduce the cost of steel manufacture. By blowing air through the molten pig iron, one can burn off the impurities, yet keep the metal hot. By then introducing carbon after having burned off the impurities, one can easily and reliably mass produce steel at considerably low prices, as much as a fifth of the original costs for production using the blister process. With this, the iron foundries begin to slowly adapt their facilities and modify them to focus on the production of steel as opposed to iron. Steel manufacture has only just taken off however, and it will take some time for it to surpass iron as the metal of choice for construction and engineering. For the time being however, gun barrels, cannon, ship armour and struts, engines, machinery, tools, and other sorts of metal items are starting to be made increasingly out of steel. There is a general reduction in the bulkiness of artillery and firearms as well, as one can afford to make a barrel lighter if the metal is stronger. -The Delian Congress-in-Exile in Antioch drafts a formal constitution with the Turks and the Egyptians that unifies the three powers under one international Congress. Each respective power joining (Delian League, United Turkish Kingdoms, and Ptolemy Egypt) become states of the newly unified Empire, each retaining their previous governmental system so long as it maintains its democratic status and guarantees the vote to all male citizens. Greek is made the official language of government in the Supreme Eastern Congress; states are allowed to speak their own language in government affairs. Some citizens are mildly annoyed at the news, given that Hellenization more or less continues as before, although many people have begun to set up local schools throughout the countryside to educate children in their native language. -The military is consolidated under a single joint Chief of Staff comprised of skilled generals and admirals elected by the Eastern congress. The army is intermixed to get different people used to living together and training is standardized as the three old empires merge into one. The Turkish and Egyptian forces are massed in Anatolia and cross the sea into Greece from Athens and Lygos to assert the power of the Supreme Eastern Congress and Delian Congress over the dictator. They spread word for the Greek forces to desert the dictator and support the new Constitution. They liberate the major cities and then establish a police force, securing the land of both forces loyal to the dictator and any other armed forces. Due to the weakened internal structure of Greece and its ruined economy from the war, there is little opposition to the creation of the new regime. -The Mediterranean task force is formed, uniting the three navies there and rebuilding them to mimic the new steamship and frigate designs of the Phoenicians. The same occurs for the Eastern task force. People are also sent across Europe and into Mongolia to record the battles fought there. This information is amassed into treatises that are taught in the military institutes across the Empire, hopefully to better educate generals on warfare and on how to prepare for it. Unfortunately, given that the majority of Mongolian conflicts are logistically and technologically lopsided so often, this is no way to prepare an army for warfare with the modernizing states of Europe. -A bizarre steam car with a polybolos strapped to the side is built as an interesting military experiment, but due to the poor ability of such a heavy and unwieldy vehicle to steer (let alone use most roads or terrain); it ends up crashing into a ditch and bursting on fire. The local farmers then sue the military for scaring their farm animals, and after a lengthy court case, end up winning due to the support of several wealthy landowners who had bones to pick with certain military leaders. -The Supreme Eastern Congress holds a census for the entire empire in the year 1008, recording a population of around nineteen million persons. Due to demographic losses from war and destruction of houses (along with a lot of people going unrecorded due to the requirement of an address being crucial to the census), historians still debate the validity of this census. The Egyptian and Turkish parts (having largely escaped war) are much more accurate however. In tandem, a centralized police force is also established, mostly in accordance with census data so that they can govern the ethnic or religious trouble spots (or the new industrial centres). -To manage these reforms and to pay for the growing bureaucracy, taxes are raised on the upper classes and the burden on the poor is somewhat slackened. Of course there are complaints about this, but the promise of political favours seems to buy over the nobility for now. -To reform the economy, the Empire has begun to look inwards as opposed to outwards. The great trading companies are at an end, and now the state has begun to raise tariffs and heavily subsidize heavy industry. The first true railways appear (in small numbers), while the number of mines, factories, shipyard, foundries, and other such enterprises quickly expand in number, sucking up armies of peasants and turning them into factory workers. Bizarrely, the empire also legalizes trade unions, introduces minimum wages, and tries to implement basic safety features in workplaces. While admirable, most of these reforms are ignored or easily circumvented. Many trade unions are also infiltrated by factory managers or private contractors and often broken up. Due to non-existent workers’ rights, very often a factory owner can fire all of the strikers and bring in new workers. In the actual places which do implement these reforms however, progress is painfully slow and full of mistrust on both sides. The government is viewed as attacking the new rich too much, and trying to pander to the workers and old aristocracy. -Foreign trade still happens however, and with the breakup of old state-owned enterprises and opening of markets to trade, merchants are sailing to the Orient to buy spices, gems and other goodies before sailing home to sell them off. Unfortunately, the Phoenicians are developing an increasing grip on trade in the Atlantic and increasingly the Indian oceans. Being squeezed out by the Phoenician state supported trading companies and their hold on coastal ports, forts, trade routes, and increasingly local rulers, the Greeks are losing the edge in their trading capabilities. The Empires focus to invest internally into heavy industry and military production is having a similar effect as well, as many merchants simply decide to move into these areas of expertise instead. -Lygos and Istanbul is rebuilt and the administrative region is redrawn to combine both cities into a single municipal entity now named “Byzantium”. Reconstruction commences soon afterwards, with many fine examples of architecture utilizing industrial materials (such as wrought and cast iron beams and decorations, reinforced brick and iron buildings, bridges, etc) first being built during this time. There are proposals for a massive iron bridge crossing the straits between the two cities, with a railway line upon it. The Greek Empire is much more interested in a new railway line however, for on hearing the proposals of Phoenician and Bohemian engineers and economists, there are talks of grand railways spanning whole continents, and so some money has been set aside for the purpose. -With post-war confidence returning and economic growth making impressive leaps and bounds under the new prime minister, one would be mistaken for believing that this is a renewed empire. Underneath the surface, despite attempts to alleviate the worst of social ills, many differing ethnic and religious groups are still often hostile towards the Empire, viewing the centralization of power within a single city in Greece to be intolerable. The congress is frequently besieged by the demands of the plethora of delegates, many demanding greater autonomy and privileges, freedoms for their own peoples, and sometimes calls for independence. The far eastern portions of the Empire are frequently the worst, with industrialization and growing wealth only serving to expand the politically conscious groups there and embolden them. It is no surprise that when an orchestra plays a new symphony by an upstart Kurdish composer (itself based on older Kurdish folk music and poetry); the Turkish authorities are near powerless to prevent a riot breaking out and kebab stores being set on fire. -Political clubs are exploding in number throughout the Empire, with many talkers and shouters finally finding the freedom and financial resources (along with an audience) to talk about the matters of the day, big or small. Newspapers begin to explode in number throughout this period and often end up travelling over borders (much to the annoyance of neighbouring kingdoms with less political freedoms). People are even testing the limits of censorship laws by publishing pornography and pictures of various politicians in rude poses. Jokes are swapped freely along with songs and dances, while the young and politically conscious have hundreds of political organizations to be snared by and later renounce. -Mongol raids still occasionally happen on the border with Ruthenia, but these are sporadic and the Mongols are showing signs of strain in their attempt to breach the borders and spill into the Empire. Most normal firearms use gunpowder as a propellant to fire the shot, making a loud bang, flash, and a lot of sooty smoke. The solution comes in an unexpected form, when a gunsmith invents a mechanism that allows one to pump and store compressed air. By putting a small tank into the stock and fitting a gravity fed mechanism to feed rounds into the rifle, one can fire shot over considerable distances with high accuracy, almost no noise, and enough power to fire thirty shots in succession. Due to the fragile nature of some of the mechanisms and the requirement that the air reservoir be continually pumped up again, it requires a special type of soldier to use them. Their inability to be used in the main battle also means that these guns are generally reserved for skirmishers who own act independently in small teams, to circle the enemy and attack the inflexible formation and command structure. Practice battles with these soldiers offer a glimpse into the next era of warfare. -For the rest of the army, simple additions to existing weaponry have been introduced. In a revolutionary leap forwards that not a single other general or gunsmith thought up of, the Entente introduces a type of knife that can be slid around the outside of a gun barrel and locked, turning it into a type of short spear. While relatively simple (and other nations have seen soldiers tying knives to guns or sticking them in the barrel), this is the first instance in which muskets with affixed bayonets have been purpose built for war. New drills are henceforth carried out with them, and a new type of charge (where soldiers charge with the gun held in a particular way) is introduced to deadly effect. The army is then relentlessly drilled, and drilled again, preparing them to discharge a volley (or more) of shot before making a powerful charge. Offense is vital to their new strategy, with skirmishing wind rifles to pick off enemy leaders and soften up their lines for the main infantry body to discharge a number of volleys, before committing to bayonet charge (supported by cavalry with lances, sabres, and pistols or carbines). -To provide the necessary provisions for the army, the “allotment” system is introduced. Under such a system, a small number of farmers are granted a tax reduction if they provide the land and supplies to maintain a full time, professional soldier (normally a ratio of about five farmers to support one soldier). The soldier stays in a cottage maintained by the farmers, with his rations provided for by them. While decentralized and of limited ability to support a large army, it takes a massive drain of resources off of the war ministry, providing enough to keep around forty thousand men under arms at all times. -The navy undergoes reform as deficiencies noted in the Great War are marked down to be taken care of. Onshore provisions for healthcare, pensions, supplies, and shipbuilding may be severely lacking, but the extra revenue saved by adoption of the allotment system has allowed the Entente to spend a great deal of money on building several ironclad and wooden paddle steamers. The coastal defences around Denmark are rebuilt as well, using lovely geometrical designs and the latest in mathematics to calculate the most efficient way to clear the surrounding lands of hostile human lifeforms. In a number of the larger coastal forts, joint military drills are held with Sweden, a friend to the country and increasingly involved with their affairs at large. -With the necessary reforms in place, the Entente is prepared for any future war. Such a war arrives when a Mongol-Rus invasion of the Entente takes place after their prior campaign in Bohemia had gone successfully and they wished to pick a new target. Unfortunately for the Mongolians, thirty years of military and economic reform had changed the face of the Entente. The traditional horde structure faced severe difficulties when officers and other commanders tended to be shot by the new wind rifles, while the offensive tactics of the Entente pushed battles away from sieges and into the field. The combination of drilled infantry using shot and bayonet, along with supporting skirmishers, carabineers, and dragoons, all act together to break up the opposing forces and to force them to consider dangerous new tactics and strategies. Finally, the first railway locomotives can quickly move up men and guns in a short period of time. This, in combination with improving telecommunications, has left the Mongols embarrassingly out of place, and they are forced to retreat after an attempt at assaulting a star fort goes horrifically wrong. Aid from their Finnish, Polotskan, and Swedish allies also helps with taking the war to the enemy themselves, where large tracts of Russia are occupied and divided up between themselves. The Rus sue for peace, and are left with a rump state. -Taking Greek cannon captured from the war, the state has it melted down with the resulting steel being sufficient in quantity to create the Steel Crown of The Commonwealth in medal form (inlaid with real amber). A monument was also constructed, to commemorate the soldiers lost in war under the flag of the Entente and those of her allies. -The industrial and agricultural capabilities of the Entente continue to steadily improve. With the introduction of crops from the New World, only the Entente has been so accepting and enthusiastic enough to push for their introduction to all corners of their lands (and to a lesser degree in Sweden and Finland). The Latvians are especially enthusiastic with adoption of the potato, where the Latvian regiment spends their spare time breeding new strains of potato. Sasha Braus introduces a new strain that becomes well known for being able to grow in rocky soil, and is best served steamed. Pica consumption also slowly spreads. As for infrastructural improvement, steam locomotives are imported from England and Misiryaban, with several railways constructed throughout the country to assist in further industrialization and mobilization of the armed forces. -Sensing a power vacuum in northern Europe, The Entente moves to establish several key royal marriages and alliances with the nations of Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and finds itself the leader of a personal union, The Baltic Union, with these nations through well placed political deals and several bribes. The attempt with Norway falls through however, for the Norwegians have no interest in Baltic expansion, and see the offer of royal marriage as an attempt to undermine their sovereign power. The Finnish are especially keen due to the threat posed by their Rus and Mongol neighbours, while the Swedish are keen to build up their own power base within the Union. In all matters minus some foreign affairs, all countries still remain pretty autonomous and are largely left to their own devices. -To help boost further economic growth, tolls on Bohemian goods are dropped, while a slightly higher and temporary tariff is raised on bulk goods from Polotsk to help raise revenue for industrial development. To this end, the first scientific attempt to define length is made. One unit of length is equal to one ten millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. This unit of length bar is kept as a physical metal bar in a carefully maintained environment at the building of weight and measures. Mass is then later defined in relation to this (one unit of mass being the mass of one cm^3 of water), along with other various measures (such as velocity, speed, force, energy, intensity of light, etc). All of these measures are in a decimal system as well, making the system much simpler and easier to use for the majority of people (plus matching the base ten counting system used in Europe). Taken together, all of these reforms represent the basis of the metric system and the birth of the International Measurement System. -The Phoenicians are quick to exploit their gains from the war. In the peace treaty, Misiryaban had to give up more or less their entire navy, and the Phoenicians not only took the ironclads, but modified them for use with cannon and improved the design slightly. A huge fleet of paddle steamers is gradually constructed (many of them armoured in iron plating), and the old vessels are either sold off to the merchant marine or to Bohemia (in return for hot air balloon models). The Phoenicians also withdraw from Misiryaban after two years, taking a great number of industrial equipment and machinery with them, including seventy steam locomotives and the machinery for a machine parts factory. The Misiryaban colonies (including Iceland and Greenland) are also seized and added to the growing Phoenician empire. -With all of these new industrial machines and expertise, along with a strong financial system, control of outgoing European trade (and incoming trade from the New World), and having escaped the war mostly unscathed, the state is now pouring vast amounts of money into economic and military development and expansion. Shipwrights are churning out armoured paddle steamers (many of them used to protect overseas trade), railways are being built, factories expanding (especially in iron and coal production), and business confidence is high. Two new stock exchanges are built in Malta and Carthage, while the "War Capacity" act is passed in Malta. The act grants large subsidies to any engineering company or individual who wishes to set up a shipyard, factory or company that produces useful products in the interests of the nation. These companies are to use mostly trained labourers, and must hold backup facilities, jigs and machines in case of war. This act is mostly designed to speed up the rebuilding of the fleet, although it goes further and provides a basis for the famed “Pan-African railway”. -Despite its name, it is not actually as ambitious as first thought. The railway is merely a plan for a line running from Carthage to Mauritania (connecting the western ports), possibly a secondary route to cover the inland. The Greeks and Bohemians are excited with the proposal, sinking large amounts of money into the construction of the railway. After seventeen years, the entire railway network of the country is finally unified under a single system (although private companies run individual parts), with timetables being drawn up and supply depots established for the quick movement of materiel and men overland. During peace, it is a most excellent way of bringing the hinterland into contact with the coast, and many farmers can find new markets to sell their goods. For many people, fresh milk and honey can be finally consumed in the cities (provided you can pay for it!). -A national engineer’s college and library is established, complete with classes for surveyors, railway engineers, managers, locomotive designers, and all the various types of people required for the construction of a railway and to maintain it. Despite the later start than Bohemia, a locomotive factory is built and quickly outgrows that of the Bohemian national locomotive works, and many indigenous locomotives are being put into service. To keep the workers happy, a ten hour day (mostly pushed through by landed men and farmers) along with safety regulations and minimum wages are adopted. These are viewed with a degree of disdain by the new rich, but given that little private enterprise exists out with government support, few complain. The vote is granted to all men who rent or own land (including poor persons who rent an apartment from a slum landlord). This is effectively most of the population, helping to win over the Berbers and Phoenicians in equal measure. To celebrate, the government also gives free land grants to people wishing to settle in new lands acquired by the Phoenicians, in particular, to the south. -With increasing confidence in her abilities, the army moves to subjugate the restless tribes of the Sahara and control the West African coast. Transport is difficult (and to a degree still is today), but the advent of the first railways (up to the points where the terrain is too poor for a line) allows the military to bring in enough men and supplies to actually make it feasible to conquer an area. Forts are built and more surveyors travel south, plotting out new lines and gradually extending the Phoenician grip southwards. Following them are the new colonists, seeking to apply their knowledge to exploit the oasis’s and other sources of water to grow cash crops (especially fruit) which can be boiled or fermented into jams and wines and sold for a tidy sum. -Sicily is also invaded, on account of the population there being Phoenician in origin. Using their powerful navy, the Phoenicians annihilate Italian opposition and quickly land in the west. Given their limited war goals and the fact Italy is still recovering from the war, they easily take control of Western Sicily through use of what an Italian minister calls “Steamboat diplomacy”. -The Greenland and Iceland colonies are granted to Norway (for some cooperative and unknown purpose), along with a number of frigates to assist in modernization of their navy. Similar actions go on in Wales, where a port is set up to exclusively trade with Phoenicia. In return for vast supplies of coal and iron, ships are sold to the Welsh. A guarantee of independence also assists massively in this endeavour. Frigates have also been sold to Bohemia in return for hot air balloons, while gunpowder manufacturing secrets have been sent to Spain in return for the latest books oh physics and specially relocated physicists. -Despite all these reforms, the Phoenicians have found that after twenty years, their railway network is still horribly incompetent in case of a major war. The times at different towns and stations is often out of synchronisation, (some towns differ by 2 to 3 minutes depending on their location) whilst railway accidents are common due to the inability to communicate messages quickly down lines. Semaphore is used, but on foggy days and nights, entire lines can be crippled. -Ships sail out into the Atlantic to discover new naval bases that would come in useful in the future. As such, the islands of Bermuda, Ascension, and the Bahamas are discovered (or rediscovered) and have ports and coaling stations built on them. Trips down the South Atlantic coast run into logistical issues beyond Ascension and one captain points out the obvious “There’s a group of good islands suitable for agriculture and as a naval base to the west of Portugal, why haven’t we gone there yet?” Finally, one commander tries to sail into Indonesia but is forced to turn back due to poor supplies. He does meet an Indonesian sailor however, who tells him of a vast southern continent sparsely populated, which he often sails to the northern tip of to trade with. The first punitive attempts at building railways is made, while in order to fund this, iron and coal mines are set up and the resources sold abroad to pay for this. Agricultural surplus is also sold off for a handsome profit, which in turn can be used to develop the country further. Slowly but surely, the military adopts modern flintlock muskets, integrates several artillery regiments, and phases out antiquated or useless armouries and soldiers. Foundries have also been established to provide for a ready source of metal for production of weaponry, while gunsmiths have popped up throughout villages to make up the shortfall in gun production. -In revenge for the Mongolian and Rus invasion of their homeland and the Baltic, Polotsk (along with the Baltic Entente and her allies) declares war on the Mongolians and the Rus after their latest invasion goes horribly wrong. With assistance from the Entente in terms of strategy, tactics, and equipment, Polotsk batters the Rus and reclaims vast tracts of land they once held, and even expand into the Rus heartland itself before the Rus sued for peace, and were left with greatly reduced territories. Polotsk also grants some borderlands to the Entente in the peace talks, seeking to clean up the borders as both nations have different priorities when it comes to expansion. -Politically and socially however, Polotsk is extremely backwards, with an essentially feudal political system still in operation (despite the growth of a fragile and disorganized civil service and bureaucracies to manage the department of war). Due to the system of granting money to his supporters among the landed aristocracy to maintain power, many are “borrowing” loans from him at reduced rates, which they use to fund their lifestyles and use the proceeds from their land rents to cover the interest. Of course, many nobles did not realize they were making a profit at all, and for the majority of them, as farms in other countries (particularly in the former Laubergian Reich and the Mannish Isles) modernized and increased agricultural production, incomes fell in Polotsk for both landowners and labourers, leading to poverty and bankruptcy for many. Only a tiny minority of nobles make the transition to profit-based agriculture, while many others are forced to pawn off their estates to the peasantry. Some cover their debts by freeing their serfs and selling land to them, although the peasantry hate that they have to take on these new debts. The first railway is built in Spain, a short thirteen mile stretch connecting an industrial centre to a port. Originally intended to move heavy goods, passenger traffic has flocked to the railway, which promises a cheap and quick way of visiting the seaside. The port had a large beach nearby, next to which a seaside resort town quickly grew up. Many middle class people travel here for short holidays, while various traders buy fish and then travel inland, selling fresh fish to people astonished that they can eat fish regularly in the comfort of their own homes. Several more railways begin to be built during this time, although they are widely unorganized and have low capacities. -The Spanish, seeking to finally crush Misiryaban once and for all, declares war on the fledging republic. Almost as soon as the Phoenician occupying forces left, the Spanish quickly moved over the border from camps set up in England, and moved into the ports as they seized control of the country. Before the last ditch attempt by the Republican guard to defend the “Revolution”, the Spanish king makes a speech: "Let those who have been accustomed unjustly to wage private warfare against the faithful now go against the infidels and end with victory this war which should have been ended long ago. Let those who for a long time have been robbers, now become knights. Let those who have been fighting against their brothers and relatives now fight in a proper way against the barbarians. Let those who have been serving as mercenaries for small pay now obtain the eternal reward. Let those who have been wearing themselves out in both body and soul now work for a double honour." -The Royal family was captured, and in a rather poor show, was executed, much to the annoyance of the loyalists. Pretenders to the throne (such as cousins and uncles) had already fled by that stage however, most of them having fled to Zaudibaum. The country is fully occupied, and conversion of the populace to Iberian Christianity began in earnest. This move was exceedingly unpopular however, and managed to alienate the pagans who initially welcomed the arrival of the Spanish. The Portuguese monarchy had recently had a succession crisis, leading to a union of both crowns for the time being. The “Iberian Kingdom” is created, although both kingdoms still possess separate legal systems, civil services, bureaucracy, and to a degree, languages. -The Iberian Kingdom occupies the remnant Aragonese Republic on the eastern coast, although this also had a lot to do with political manoeuvring as it did to force of arms. The Republic had always remained diplomatically isolated, and increasing incursions by the Spanish into the Republic eventually leads to them giving in. The occupation lasts for a full nine years before a formal treaty recognizes that the Republic is to be annexed to Spain, retaining a number of political concessions and autonomy. Over the next few years, these are gradually rolled back as the Spanish reform their civil service, incorporating the Republic and centralizing administrative control in Madrid. -The Spanish state begins to implement economic reforms so as to encourage industrial development, along with the building of the first railways, gunpowder mills, armaments factories, and new shipyards. There is no word yet on any land reform or political reform, as many small farmers throughout the countryside still resent the feudal structures that have yet to be dismantled, and many of them feel powerless to better their lot. Some can make themselves heard through the occasional bout of violence, but these are always crushed. Poverty has also forced many of them to start migrating towards the towns and cities, where there is ample employment in the new factories. The blueprints and engineers needed to build the new powder factories came from Phoenicia proper, who in return for this, have been sent men from the royal society eager to explain new ballistics breakthroughs to them. All firearms require loading from the muzzle, in a process that takes time and is especially difficult when in a battle situation. A hunter shooting clay pigeons comes up with a nifty solution (he also manages to avoid the unnecessary expense of buying clay pigeons by shooting real ones). By loading from the rear (or breech) of the barrel, using a hinge and a locking mechanism to prevent any material being ejected from the wrong end, one can quickly and easily reload a firearm by stuffing the cartridge into the barrel and then locking the barrel. Despite this innovation, paper cartridges are notoriously unreliable and the gun still requires a pan of powder to ignite the charge. It can only reduce the time required for reloading by so much, and these firearms are inevitably more costly than normal ones due to the added complexity. Despite this, the industrial capacity of Scotland allows for the mass production of them (if the expense is to be allowed), and cavalrymen particularly enjoy using them (and seemingly employ them the best). -The Islamic government of Scotland, having survived long enough under Misiryaban rule to see the religion take root, has declared a campaign against the pagans. Rooting them out wherever they can be found, in a period of 20 years the Scottish finish the conversion of their country, save for the Highlands where many people still stick to the old ways. They even try to rebel at one stage, but the rebellion is easily crushed when several of the villages where the ringleaders were had been set ablaze. The clearances had been temporarily stopped by the Great War, so it is postulated that in order to finish them off for good, a resumption of such clearances may be prudent. -The Scottish also manage to acquire a number of ships (either stolen or quickly built in the new shipyards) and begin to patrol the coasts with them, before quietly annexing the Outer Hebrides and Orkney Isles. The Norwegians are extremely angry at this gesture, declaring war on Scotland and engaging in a series of naval battles. Unfortunately for Norway, their navy is woefully underequipped and unable to fight on equal footing with the Scots, who have heavy guns and even a number of steamships and ironclads. The Norwegians also have poor financial resources at their disposal and are horribly backwards in their military structure and organisation. The Scottish win the war, but the Norwegians have begun to make significant military reforms in order to avoid becoming a complete embarrassment again in the next one. -To ensure the loyalty of the peasantry, some land reforms are enacted, where large areas of land are given out to people, any old servile structures from the far past are abolished, and people are allowed to actually own the land they farm. For the first few years, many peasants are pleased with the news, but changing economic and social conditions have led to them starting to sell their farms to more successful neighbours (or to the former lord) and move to the cities. It is mostly the sons of farmers who do this after having inherited it from their parents, or particularly bad ones who were blessed with poor weather, poor intellect, poor land, or alcoholism. The cities continue to grow into smoky and noisy centres of industry and commerce, although the Highland villages are particularly resistant to their changes (their isolation from markets and transport along with poor education facilities means many of them are forced to be self-sufficient and often remain outside of the money economy). The Laubergian Reich, the Delian Empire, and Italy, have allowed Romania to take in many people from her neighbours (including political refugees) over time. Her relative isolation from warfare and general prosperity due to Mediterranean trade (which has only started to shift in favour of the Atlantic seaboard) has made it a good place to do business, in spite of some old feudal customs and restrictions on trade and industry remaining. It is in this Kingdom that the political philosophy of Communism first develops (before the more radical Lendinites came about). In Communism, it holds that society progresses through stages of development, based upon which class of people happens to hold power at the time. Almost inevitably in every stage it is a tiny elite holding all of the land, capital, and material goods, whereas the poorer classes inevitably must labour for consumer goods. The theory holds, contrary to empirical evidence, that over time, wages will fall as capitalists fight to increase profits, leading to a point where a large social revolution occurs and society organizes itself by having the workers create communal settlements and democratically decide on how to organize their labour collectively and to produce what is needed. -The King enacts a nation-wide mandatory conscription policy. All males must, at some point before they turn forty, serve two years in the army, and thereafter must return for some basic military training. The military is restructured to accommodate for the large numbers of men passing through it. The initially small, but well trained core of the army is made to begin teaching the massive numbers of new conscripts. There is a decline in quality, although the number of possible men the country can field has massively expanded without having expended too much money on it. The state sets a standard for basic military training, which includes physical fitness, small scale tactics, weapons operations, and a focus on guerrilla warfare. Some females are given the basics of military training too, mostly for nursing and baggage personnel who are hardly protected from the dangers of war. All physical education teachers in the country are also replaced with NCOs, who drill fitness and discipline into children. Many of these reforms are modelled upon those adopted by Wei ßen, or in turn, is adopted by Wei ßen as the basis for the new military. -Noticing that Romania is somewhat backwards and behind her neighbours, the monarchy takes massive loans from public and foreign banks in order to rapidly industrialize. New factories, producing weaponry, soaps, glass, iron, cloth, and other various manufactured goods spring up all over the country as families begin flocking towards the various urban centres. Most of these factories are usually owned by private individuals, with subsidies from the state being used to fund their construction. Mining operations in the mountains throughout the country kick off as well, with a large focus on coal and iron extraction. Later on in the second decade, the first unorganized worker's unions begin to pop up, demanding better rights, healthcare, and minimum wages. The King ignores them and acts generally hostile towards their existence, banning trade unions. The urban populace start to agree with the ideas present in the recently published "Communist Manifesto", which calls for a worker's revolution against the monarchy, with the main actions being a large nationwide strike to bring down the Kingdom. Despite these calls, most of the population is still located in the countryside. This is an era of high childbirth and declining mortality rates, and most farms have yet to be cleared like in the rest of Europe. Many young sons go to the cities to learn how to read and to make extra money for their families, while the daughters become domestic servants. Most people want to ascend into the professions such as minor clerks, shopkeepers, and the skilled trades. -The King, angered by the trespasses made on his territories during the Great War, warns the world that Romanian land is not to be trampled on by the "Străins", and pledges to "Fuck up the next dickhead who thinks he can just mosey on through my land". He also condemns the practice of Waifuism, and calls for the expulsion of all practicing Wapanese within his borders, citing the reasoning, "Do they ever shower?" and "Anyone who can get off to a drawn girl is insane". The wearing of fedoras is then banned within his realm. Soon afterwards, Waifu temples are closed down and the religion is pushed underground, where they mingle with Communists and other radicals. -The Liberal Prime Minister suggests to the monarchy that some enlightened reforms may be necessary to streamline his Kingdom and to further modernize its capabilities, along with holding off revolution. He suggests that railway locomotives be imported and a vast railway network constructed (the Prime Minister used to be a railway clerk), that a state owned trade association union be established, the consultative council be expanded to include the growing middle classes, reforms to the civil service, and finally, the abolition of serfdom and necessary land reforms to improve agricultural output and to move labour to the cities, which ought to get labour to where it is needed, free up land for use, and create a conservative landowning class. For the time being, only several small scale railways exist in Romania, with peasants riding in the flatbed trucks to carry sacks of fresh food to the cities for sale. This is especially true in the multi-ethnic and troubled Eastern Empire (created as a merger of the old three empires). Initially, the philosophy of dialectics swept the Empire, with it showing that history progressed through stages in which contradictions would be resolved through them eliminating each other to create a new synthesis. In turn, this synthesis would inevitably end up contradicting something else, starting the process anew. In history, this meant old societies being supplanted by newer ones through such a process. The arrival of evolution gave further credence to this idea, with many believing that society, its development, and its direction and ultimate purpose would all be explained through natural scientific laws. From this came the Lendinites, adhering to a branch of communist philosophy which views the current society (where a tiny elite hold all wealth and power, and those who labour for the elite in return for enough to live on) are inherently at conflict with one another. In turn, this leads to a social revolution to address social inequalities, at the front of which stand the Lendinites. They differ from anyone else on the left due to their militancy and their willingness to use political power as a means of bringing about revolution. Instead of "smashing the state", the Lendinites intend to "seize the state, grow the state, and then the state will disappear when it's ready to". Their party is strictly organized and structured with a clear hierarchy. Revolution will come at any cost, even if they have to fight in every part of the world. The reason for this is that they hold that Capitalism will not destroy itself, meaning that only a dedicated party of professional revolutionaries can do the job. -An international news publication mostly focused on economic and war news from the perspective of authoritarian communism is created, and is disseminated throughout universities to students with poor critical thinking skills and to old ladies outside of grocers who mistakenly thought they were buying a different newspaper. The paper lists the provisions of the famous manifesto that had been written decades before as if the editor himself had wrote it, and is poorly received as a paper by most people. One phrase made about the paper is “The paper consists of the same number of words whenever there is any news in it or not”. Among friendly circles however, it is well received (minus on minor accounts). One particular article fell into disrepute after the number of potatoes the government had stolen from a peasant was misprinted, and some argued that it was not a misprint. This argument would eventually lead to a split in one communist circle, where two writers spent six years arguing over the issue, sending nasty messages to each other’s partners (marriage is forbidden) and developing their own ideologies increasingly further away from each other. As it turned out much later, the story had actually been falsified in the first place and the missing potatoes had been actually eaten by a feral pig. -The establishment of the first Lendinist party in the Delian Empire was under the leadership of Dimitris Lendin. Comrade Lendin (the son of a wealthy nobleman from Anatolia) also wrote the Lendinist political philosophy, which believes in the use of powerful political parties to seize control of power in countries, agitating the working class, and oppressing the landowning class for the purpose of an eventual transition to a complete egalitarian society. The motto of the party is "lendin' a hand to the revolution!" Currently, due to the infancy of the ideology and party, they can do little more than support their volunteer militia and publish leaflets to distribute to people who use them to stuff the cracks between door frames or as firelighters. Lendin takes time off from his busy life as a part time lawyer to write more of his philosophy, obsessively reading books on his heroes, and shunning the wealthy lifestyle by talking to socially inept people in Mrs Miggins Coffee shop, located under his apartment. -The Lendinites establish a "people's militia". Nominally a group dedicated to ensuring peace and protecting against police brutality, in reality they are a paramilitary wing of the lendinites with the goal of eventually taking control of the country. At this time, they do little more than shout at the police whenever they make arrests and try and form vigilante mobs against the police. They are under-equipped due to lack of weapons and manpower, and usually help to fund the party through illegal activities ranging from smuggling to robbery. Many of them are sent to prison or exiled, although they have rather comfortable lodging there. Greek housewives often send fine white loaves to these prisoners as treats. The Peoples militia also end up inventing a type of crude bomb where you take a bottle of Greek fire with a cloth stuck in one end and light it before throwing the bottle. It is effective at setting flammable things on fire. The constitution is laid out as follows. -Each respective power joining (Delian League, United Turkish Kingdoms, and Ptolemy Egypt) become states of the newly unified Empire, each retaining their previous governmental system so long as it maintains its democratic status and guarantees the vote to all male citizens. -The state governments will be under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Eastern Congress, comprising a lower House of Representatives that is proportionally elected from all distinct regions of the Empire (Turkey, Greece, Mesopotamia, Arabia, and Egypt.) Furthermore, an executive council is to be formed above the lower house, being made up of 3 members of each state. These members are nominated by state executives and must be ratified by a 2/3's vote in Congress. From the council, one member is elected as the emperor, a largely ceremonial title that just puts him in charge of ensuring operation of the council. Likewise, the House of Representatives will elect, by 2/3's vote, a Speaker of the House who will organize the house every time it convenes. This title requires re-ratification every 2 years. -A census is to be conducted to arrange the Empire into new voting districts where things like ethnicity, religion, and other discernable variables are to be considered. This census will be required every 25 years from the first one to ensure proper proportions amongst the districts. From this census data, the first Supreme Eastern Congress will be convened in Antioch until such a time that Lygos/Istanbul are rebuilt and ready for habitation. -Until the census can be concluded, the Delian Congress, Turkish Parliament, and Egyptian Parliament will form the Supreme Eastern Congress between them. The Congress elects three members to serve on the council and the monarchs of Turkey and Egypt appoints three men each. Upon conclusion of the census and re-structuring based on the information therein, elections shall be immediately held. -The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the Eastern Empire; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the Eastern Empire,to borrow Money on the credit of the Eastern Empire, To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, to establish a uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the Eastern Empire, to coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures,to provide for the Punishment of counterfeiting the Securities and current Coin of the Eastern Empire, to establish Post Offices and post Roads, to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries, to constitute Tribunals, to define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offences against the Law of Nations, to declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water, to raise and support Armies, to provide and maintain a Navy, to make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces, to provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions, to provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the Eastern Empire, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress, to exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District as may, by Cession of particular Sta
