READ ME, SEND IN TURNS AS TURN 4. [img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/18381.png[/img_thumb] Music for the turn – Giuseppe Verdi - Non t'accostare all'urna Events of 1838: -A fire destroys Lloyd's Coffee House and the Royal Exchange in London. -Isambard Kingdom Brunel's paddle steamer SS Great Western (1838) makes the Transatlantic Crossing to New York from Avonmouth, England, in fifteen days, inaugurating a regular steamship service. -The Federal Republic of Central America begins to collapse. The Civil War begins with Honduras' separation from the Central American Federation. -Supporters of Infante Carlos, Count of Molina, are victorious in the Battle of Maella during the First Carlist War. -Proteins are discovered by Jöns Jakob Berzelius. -40,000 chests of opium are sold in China. -Matthias Schleiden discovers that all living plant tissue is composed of cells. -Electrotyping is invented by Moritz von Jacobi in Russia. -Bulat steel alloy developed by Pavel Petrovich Anosov. -Samuel Morse first publicly demonstrates the electrical telegraph. -David Bruce, Jr., invents the Pivotal Typecaster, which replaces hand typecasting in printing. -The first screw-pile lighthouse is built by Alexander Mitchell on Maplin Sands in the Thames Estuary. -David Brewster originates the stereoscope. -John Gorrie experiments with cooling the hospital wards of malarial patients in Apalachicola, Florida. -With the growth of trade, infrastructure and industry in Egypt, it is becoming economically viable to ship goods to Egypt, where they are taken overland to the Red sea to be then exported. Foreign nations are all too keen to grab a piece of the pie. -The nobility of the main European powers are becoming increasingly concerned over Egypt and the Ottoman Empire, with fears the Ottoman Empire could be toppled, and destabilise Europe. DainBramageStudios – Tokugawa Shogunate Feudal Dictatorship -The growing middle class of artisans, merchants, investors and foreigners are slowly being increasingly relied upon by the Shogunate to legitimize their power. Printing presses and police stations are being established now, with the view that the Emperor and his cabal will drag Japan into the dark ages. Given the high respect held for the Emperor, this is difficult for some people to accept, with riots starting to break out. -The Shogunates official newspaper portrays it as leading Grorious Nippon into a brave new world of free enterprise, trade, happiness, industry, freedom and chocolate digestives. -To show that the Emperor is against the Japanese people, documents of dubious origin start to appear, showing apparent deals made between the nobility and foreign powers, to make a plot whereby they will invade Japan and bring it under their control. -Embassies and consulates begin to be established in the Americas and Europe, hoping to extend Japanese influence, especially as international trade develops. -Weaponry, troops and money begins to be hoarded, with clear indications the Shogunate is preparing for war. The British and French are all too happy to sell weaponry to both sides. -The French and Dutch begin to place bets, and are getting ready to move into position so as to see which side winning the war would be more favourable to them. -The Sonnō jōi movement is underway, with the Emperor now deliberately attempting to intervene in the affairs of the state. The rallying cry is “Revere the emperor, expel the barbarians”, and this movement seems to be growing rapidly. Choshu and Satsuma seem to be hotbeds for these movements. -A railway line is constructed between Nagasaki and Fukuoka, and another between Osaka and Kobe. These piecemeal improvements are slowly improving infrastructure in the rapidly modernising nation. Satansick – Centralist Republic of Mexico Military dictatorship -An insurrection breaks out in Tizimín, beginning the campaign for the independence of Yucatan from Mexico. -Having defaulted on massive loans owed to the French, the French government demands that reparations are in order, or else they will be subject to a naval blockade. -Camouflaged uniforms are introduced into military service, although dying them is considerably costly, and conservative parts of the army are hostile to adopting the new uniforms. -Naval expansion begins with the establishment of a shipyard and importation of naval supplies from Europe. Several stud farms are nationalised to help provide cavalry for the Mexican army. -The French are asked if they would wish to join in an alliance, but the French are highly annoyed about the lack of loan payment. They would only agree, and would clear the debts, if the Mexican government wholly supported French foreign policy, and let the French practically run the Mexican economy. -Several steam engines are bought to try and begin mechanization of industry, being installed in new factories throughout the country. The country however sinks into further debt, and further imports stop. -Native peoples are granted the same rights as other Mexicans, although this token gesture does little to alleviate much of their suffering as the law is poorly enforced. -Martin von Wahrendorff’s breechloading gun is studied, and a copy is made for the Mexican Army. The lack of funds prevents further development however, but the French are willing to subsidise this if the Mexicans agree to the French treaty. [img] http://i.cubeupload.com/DVl6vB.png [/img] Mr Face – Kingdom of Prussia Absolute monarchy -New research into military theory is conducted, based primarily off the work by Clausewitz. There is taking up of the suggestion of conscription and establishment of industrial works to supply the army however. -A free trade treaty is eventually signed with the Austrian Empire, helping to strengthen economic ties. Military supplies are also shipped into Austria to help crush the Czech rebellion. -Talks begin with Hannover over the possibility of joining Prussia in a so called “North German Confederation”. The customs union has opened up a common market, ended tariffs between states, and standardized weights, measures, and currencies within member states, forming the basis of a proto-national economy. -The conservative nobility who dominate Prussia however, block all attempts at unification. The growing middle class is far too small to exert considerable political influence yet. The nobility itself, still dominates the countryside, with their own judicial powers, hunting laws, no payment of land tax, private policing systems and control over the church. Loans are frequently given to the nobility to avoid them falling into debt. -Free trade treaties are eventually signed with France and Spain, although both do not agree to any military cooperation. Similar talksare also done with the Ottoman Empire. -Agriculture is becoming increasingly unprofitable for the old nobility, whom are either being competed with from abroad, or by entrepreneur farmers. -The first public works projects into sanitation begin, with initially the sewage drains in cities being rebuilt and replaced, plus water pipes being put down along with public drinking fountains. The downside is these works are costly and take a great deal of time to implement. Nonetheless, these improvements are slowly improving public health. -Industrialisation is starting to receive a considerable boost, now that many barriers to free trade have been removed, with public works projects helping to revitalise city centres. The lack of co-op shops, street lighting, building regulations and clean air such still means that the urban areas have a long way to go before becoming healthy to live in though. Firefox42 – United States of America Constitutional Republic -Officers begin to be equipped with colt revolvers as a sidearm. Reporting good results, there are orders for their mass production to be handed out to the military, although at considerable cost. The actual revolver itself is also being sold domestically too, and with the ability to fire 6 times without reloading, it becomes useful against natives, criminals and family members alike. -A treaty allowing railway lines to be built between Texas and the USA is signed. -Protectionist tariffs are placed upon imported British goods. Faced with a reduced market for goods and pressured by British abolitionists, the British reduce their imports of cotton from the United States, which weaken the southern economy. The Southern Slaveowning states are becoming increasingly hostile, and talks of succession from the union appear occasionally. Manufactured goods are more costly for the Southern States, whilst also reducing their cotton exports. The North does the best out of this however, seeing impressive industrial growth. -All land in the west of the continent not owned by Mexico or the United Kingdom is immediately annexed, to the annoyance of people in both countries. Talks of war to push the border to 54.4 are still heavily prominent. -An early form of dynamo is invented by Thomas Davenport, subsidised by the Federal government. Whilst generating electrical power, the power output is considerably too weak for practical purposes, is costly to construct, fragile, and whilst connected to a steam engine, is shown to be horribly inefficient. People are starting to laud these experiments as folly. Ruskie – Egypt Eyalet Sultanate -Modern army and naval colleges begin to be established in the country to help educate the new military professionals. -The shipyards project is finally completed, with a number of shipyards having been established throughout Egypt, Syria and Palestine. -Weapons factories are now starting to produce a surplus of weaponry for the rapidly modernising army and navy. A great deal of the new fun weapons are bringing Egypt up to European standards, if slightly behind by several years. -The Prussian rifling technique is introduced, helping to equip the Egyptian army with large numbers of deadly skirmishers. -A campaign to crack down on corruption, whilst expanding the bureaucracy begins. It is taking a great deal of time, but marginal improvements are gradually coming in. -With railways now starting to steadily expand, in combination with trading ports that utilise drydocks, cranes and warehouses, Egypt is getting ready for trade. The signing of a series of laws permitting laissez faire economics comes along, and very quickly, rapid economic expansion begins as investors flock to Egypt, especially as a Suez railway exists. -The French request permission from the Egyptians to hold a lease on the land immediately around the Suez, where they will survey the land to see the feasibility of canal construction. Daniel Smith – United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Constitutional Monarchy -The People's Charter is drawn up in the United Kingdom, demanding universal suffrage. -Lord Durham and his entourage arrive in Upper Canada to investigate the cause of the 1837 rebellion in that province. This leads to Durham submitting the Durham Report to Britain. -Faced with declining imports of cotton from the United States and decreasing demand there for industrial goods, the United Kingdom is starting to rely on other sources of cotton, such as the colonies, and Texas. -The rest of the Northern territories near Canada are claimed by the British, and soon incorporated. -The army marches into Karnataka, deposing the local ruler and putting it under direct British control. Large scale protests are steadily building up in India as the British continue to gradually blob over the subcontinent. -An alliance is requested with the French, to which they agree. The French seem very keen however to support Muhammed Ali in Egypt, although the Ottomans are suffering from massive internal problems, with the potential for it to even collapse. -A colour newspaper is introduced, using chromolithography. However, it is considerably expensive and is only read by the upper classes as a result. Multiple duties and taxes on paper, printing and the press still exist, pushing prices further still. There are frequent campaigns to push down the price of newspapers by eliminating tariffs on paper, ink and the written word. -The Dominion of Colombia (Canada) is established as a provincial government under the crown of the UK alongside The Dominion of Oceania. The new governments shall assume power next year. -Work into telegraph systems yield promising results, with telegraph cables starting to be strung alongside railway lines, helping to speed up communication. -In support of the Baltic rebels, the Royal navy ships arms, powder and other supplies to help equip and maintain them. The French immediately demand an end to this action intended to deliberately destabilise Russia. -A British ship is deliberately sunk in a coastal attack by a Russian gun battery, seeking to drive away ships trying to aid freedom fighters in the Baltic. HeavyGuy – Free City of Kraków Constitutional Republic -The militias and police forces staff the outposts more regularly, making the population feel a little bit safer, and making criminals lives a little bit harder. Prison reform is demanded however, due to industrialisation and prison overcrowding being constant issues. -Other than spending on the policing system, very little occurs. Industry is gradually continuing to grow due to the lack of tariffs or barriers to trade. The first railway in the Republic is later constructed to help connect it to the outside world. -Kraków's leaders imagine the state of their country in a few years. Some imagine they'll be invaded and easily taken, the rest imagine it as being called Poland, and being a great strong country, with many comics being made about it. Mackalda2k6 – Republic of Texas Constitutional Republic -Due to tariffs in the United States, cotton exports have begun to expand in Texas, at the cost of Texas having a tiny manufacturing base due to the importation of British manufactured goods. -A pamphlet entitled "Davy Crockett died for the Rio Grande, not the Nueces" is written. This pamphlet asserts Texan claims for a border along the Rio Grande. They are sent across Texas and the Southeastern United States in an attempt to stir up sympathetic help from the back country farmers. - Comanche chiefs are brought to Houston and offered protection of their lands, control of governing their territory, and citizenship for every tribesman if the join the Republic of Texas. As an extra incentive they are offered modern weapons for their warriors. -Some tribes take up the offer, and immediately begin to stockpile weaponry, alongside maintaining strict control over their territories. They tend to go where the herds of buffalo go, which is quite often most of Texas. -Two more armies of are established, and begin training in Houston. Cavalry divisions are formed from the volunteers who own horses. Garrisons along the Texan border begin establishing forts along the Rio Grande, with the First Texan army marching into the disputed lands and constructing a fort right on the banks of the Rio Grande. - The government increasingly asks planters for money to aid in upkeep for the armies. They offer incentives of cheap new land once they control it. However, the reservations established for the natives critically reduce the amount of available land for plantations, annoying a good deal of planters. A tax is eventually established to help pay for the army in the end. - The control over Houston is given to a new local government, with a centralized policing system in place in Houston. A sheriff system also emerges across Texas in an attempt to curb the lawlessness plaguing the frontiers. These are moderately effective, but the high prevalence of firearms and poor transport and communications limits their effectiveness. -Steam engines begin to be imported, with the first factories established in Houston. However, it turns out to be more economically viable to grow cotton, process it into bales, and then export it to Europe, for cheap industrial goods from abroad undercut Texan industry. Obnobs – Swedish-Norwegian Republic Constitutional Monarchy -Gliders attempt to be made for the military, but no practical use for them is found, and they are abandoned. -Telegraph cables begin to be set up alongside railway lines, helping to improve communications in the country. It is however initially very costly, for much of the equipment and cabling must be imported. -A new factory organisation system is introduced, whereby factory owners utilise timetables, clocks and shifts to help keep their factories running 24/7. Thelurker1234 – The Russian Empire Prussian Constitutional Monarchy -The Russian Empire lays claim to the rest of Siberia and the Steppes, and begins to slowly extend their influence into the Khanates of central Asia. -A gradual shift begins in the military, although decried by the conservatives, with the establishment of entrance examinations for officers that money cannot buy. A meritocratic system slowly emerges. -All ships whose goods have been confiscated by the Russians are returned to their rightful owners, with full reparations. -A law seeing that wages are paid in return for labour is enacted, although this doesn’t really change anything, as serfs are often not paid, usually via loopholes or poor reach of the tsars officials into enacting laws. -Laws on tying serfs down to the land are loosened, allowing non-landholding serfs to emigrate. Serfs whom hold a piece of land are still tied down to it however, but the law helps to draw overpopulation in European Russia out into new farms in Siberia, or to the towns and cities which are starting to grow. -Many of these emancipated serfs are encouraged to move to the Baltic area, where they begin to slowly dilute the existing ethnic groups there. -A census is conducted, and whilst taking an immense length of time and resources, tallies in the population as being roughly 62 million. -A bill of rights, established in the style of the American bill of rights, is written up for the people of Russia, granting a list of basic rights. This does not come with its opposition, from the nobility, clergy, and even large segments of the rural population. In the end, it finally puts a limit on the powers of the Tsar for good, with the power of the Duma written out, and seeking to expand. -A romanticist movement begins, with writers such as Pushkin extensively glorified by the intelligentsia of Russia. Many poets and composers flock into the countryside to listen to the peasants babble and sing, then plagiarise them and head back to show the heart and soul of the country. -Public education is finally established in some form in most urban areas in Russia. -After a rising by Baltic separatists, the Okhrana and the army is used to crush the rebellion, followed by extensive relocation of people, hangings and then settlement of Russian people in the Baltic. -A British ship is accidentally sunk in a confused coastal skirmish with a Russian gun battery, seeking to drive away ships trying to aid a rebel army that has burned down a local Russian noblemans house and killed his family. MountainWatcher – Rattanakosin Kingdom Absolute Monarchy -A colony is established in Sandakan, with slaves being imported to help work on the farms there. -A trade treaty is signed with the Dutch, helping to open up trade between the two countries. -A deal is also signed with Madagascar, allowing for the transport of slaves to the Kingdom in return for rice, spices and rice wine. However, the actual number of slaves seems to rather small, with a bureaucrat being accused of misplacing a decimal point. Agriculture fails to significantly grow. -Textile factories are slowly starting to appear, although they seem to be more or less glorified cottage industries. A few larger mechanical machines are starting to appear for industrial use, but not to a significant degree yet. -Industrial machinery begins to be imported from Britain and the Netherlands to help get the industrial revolution going. Most of it is funded from new agricultural developments, such as clearcutting of forests and selling off the timber, spice/rice/cotton plantations, new roads and various other reforms to help build up a healthy agricultural base with which to further build industry upon. Overpain – Baltic Seperatists Collapsed revolution -Assassin dens are formed in several cities throughout the Baltic, which unfortunately are eventually sniffed out by the Okrhana. A large number of murdered officers with passive-aggressive notes tied to them appear often. -The Tsar decides to finally stop taking this shit. He has the army sent in to crack down heavily on the rebellion, followed by mass hangings of ringleaders. With the final abolishment of serfdom in the Baltic countries, a massive resettlement program begins anew, hoping to send the rebellious types into Siberia to colonise the hinterland. In their place, Russians settle the Baltic, serving to dilute the cultural identity gradually. -The British navy manage to ship in some supplies, although most of them had been requisitioned by the Russian army. -Whilst the rebellion has more or less ended and been crushed, its influence lives on in the steadily increasing number of poets, composers, writers and various other nationalists who seek freedom for the Baltic peoples. The Romantic Movement is well underway with their help, although anything near revolutionary action being taken will take decades. Zillamaster55 – Império do Brasil Constitutional Monarchy -A series of small forts begin construction on the western side of Brazil to defend against native attacks, and hopefully to deter foreigners. -Rifle making machinery, using water mills are introduced. They are however horrifically weak, and poor at making the new rifles. Spots on rivers for building them are limited too. Steam engines are suggested as a better alternative, to which the response is to import a great deal of them and found a steam engine factory. -Cannon rifling is introduced. Although it significantly increases reloading time, cost of production and likelihood of barrel fouling, they are much more notably deadly and accurate. -Some nationalised sulphur mines are established, to help secure a supply for the armaments and munitions industries. -Diplomatic relations gradually improves with Uruguay, with the establishment of an embassy, and the regular sending of gifts to the king. -Roads open up between Brazil and French Guyana, in the hopes of improving relations. Instead they merely help facilitate trade, although traffic on the roads is somewhat low. -Ties with Argentina are cut, and talks of war appear to be bouncing around parliament. -Tropical forests are being cut down to make way for agriculture. The exported wood is sold in return for metal. -A massive road and port building campaign begins, helping to gradually improve transportation throughout Brazil. Whilst the improvements are somewhat marginal, they help to improve exports. -Despite attempts to limit agricultural exports, this sector is rapidly expanding anyways, with food production continuing to climb. Crop rotation is finally perfected in agriculture, helping to boost exports. -Imperador Abraão begins to appoint more and more conservative party members. Chernobyl426 – Persia Absolute monarchy -The army heads north to effectively annex some land around the Caspian, although it has begun to overlap foreign claims in the area. -An alliance is offered to Spain, however, the Spanish are currently embroiled in a series of civil wars, and not much in terms of diplomatic work can be done. Both factions do however seem conductive to cordial relations and opening trading links. -The countries military advisers begin talks on the possibility of seeking to incorporate Pakistan into Persia. Damian0358 – Kingdom of Bohemia Collapsed revolution -Quite suddenly, a small group of Bohemians start going around killing Austrians and non-Slavs with weapons stolen with soldiers. Eye-witnesses say that they were intoxicated. -The "Bohemian Revolution", as the people call it, is started to free the Bohemians from Austrian rule and become a kingdom. -Several successor riots break out, but eventually the attempted “revolution” never gets close to threatening the Austrian Empire. The Bohemian army is later arrested by the Prague police force. The leader of the insurrection tries to flee by buying a bus ticket, but is later caught and sent to prison. Salricci –Austrian Empire Absolute Monarchy -Using the national army and the local police forces, the Bohemian revolutionaries are brutally crushed. The revolution is very quickly contained and soon fizzles out. -Military advisers are sent to Krakow to assist training the army in new military theory and tactics. -A new Military reform begins based mostly off the Prussian system, based on strategic mobility; armies are now trained to use pre-planned marches and railroads to get into the fighting quicker (despite the low prevalence of railways for the time being). -The states of Southern Germany, such as Bavaria, are encouraged to join Prussia in a future alliance. The Bavarians are wary of this however, and with most of the other south German states, they do not agree to ally with the Prussians. -The market is deregulated, and now allows for the free establishment of banks and stock exchanges. Whilst a massive boon to economic growth and development, they suffer from constant stock market crashes, runs on the banks, debt and other oddities that people are not too sure about. -Rifling is introduced into the Austrian army, focusing initially on rifling gunpower muskets for skirmishers. VOSK - California Republic Revolutionary Republic -A dispute that originally began with a group of Mexican soldiers and American immigrants in the small farming community of San Francisco consequently ended up with those soldiers killed and the immigrants hanged. It soon erupts into a rebellion for California to secede from Mexico. Levies are raised from any who are willing to fight, with some requisitions of property, resources, and conscription enacted. -An army is quickly and hastily formed from men or boys willing to join to fight the Mexican Army, with locals who have knowledge of the area, and soldiers getting officer positions. -Several of the more rural areas in California fall to the Republic, as the Mexican army is currently holed up in forts with questionable loyalties. -A new currency begins to be printed by the new Republic, although nobody uses it yet. -Rifled muskets are being imported for use by skirmishers. -Despite major initial work, the forts remain in the hands of the Mexican army. Asantos3 - Democratic Anarchy-Nazism People of Madagascar Absolute Monarchy -Conscription is introduced for everybody aged 5 to 18. This policy is virtually ignored. -Military reform begins, although the lack of any clear policies or reforms to take in particular means pretty much nothing happens. - A trading deal is signed with the Rattanakosin Kingdom, mostly exporting slaves in return for agricultural products. The enactment of this policy is viewed very harshly by the people of Madagascar, but oddly enough very few people seem to travel overseas. It seems as though the number of slaves being exported is less than what official records imply. -Investments into mining, animal husbandry and agriculture begin. The lack of a market to export these goods to, and lack of manufactured goods to import however means that economic development is dreadfully slow. -Population growth begins to sharply decline, and soon after, the economy enters a period of negative expansion. However, a new cultural movement takes root, promoting the independent culture of the island through use of mediums such as the written word, poetry, music, dance and artwork. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And if you need me just contact me on Steam or Facepunch; I am usually able to help with your inquiries. As of this moment, the Kingdom of Bohemia-Moravia is now a vassal state to the Austrian Empire. The deal I struck with the leader of the Austrian Empire: What I get: - Bohemia and Moravia become independent as the Kingdom of Bohemia-Moravia - The ability to ally with any Slav we want. - A Czech Legion What the Austrian Empire gets: - Help from the Kingdom in anything that relates to defending the Empire or attacking/conquering someone for the Empire - Payment every year (Basically yearly tax) - Any territory we conquer becomes part of the Empire. - Free beer. - To be able to use our industries, mostly weapon industries. - The ability to use the Czech Legion if any other part of the Empire wants to become independent, but it will go softer on Slavs. - The laws of the Empire are still recognized. - The leader of the Empire is recognized as superior to our king.
