Music for the turn - Frédéric Chopin - No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35

Events of 1839:
-The first parallax measurement of the distance to Alpha Centauri is published by Thomas Henderson.
-Theodor Schwann proposes that all living matter is made up of cells.
-Carl Mosander discovers lanthanum.
-James Clark Ross sets off on the first scientific expedition to survey Antarctica.
-The French Academy of Sciences announces the Daguerreotype photography process. The camera is later commercially available for 400 francs by September.
-H. Fox Talbot shows his "photogenic drawings" at the Royal Institution.
-William Otis receives a patent for the steam shovel.
-The first commercial telegraph lines are coming into use.
-Michael Faraday publishes Experimental Researches in Electricity[3] clarifying the true nature of electricity.
-Invention of the Grove fuel cell by William Grove.
-Development of vulcanized rubber by Charles Goodyear.
-Development of Babbitt metal by Isaac Babbitt.
-Invention of the rear-wheel driven bicycle by Kirkpatrick Macmillan in Scotland.
-In the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, a railway between Naples and Portici (7.4 km length) is inaugurated by H.M. King Ferdinand II of Bourbon (the first railway in the Italian peninsula).
-The treaty of Paris is signed between France, Belgium and the Netherlands, assuring the independence of Belgium.
-The expansion of railways is starting to boom worldwide, particularly in Western nations. British locomotive manufacturers are consequently making shitloads. In turn, this has led to an economic boom, with investors quickly throwing more and more of their savings into new railway companies (encouraged by national governments). By the end of 1839, some companies have been discovered to be badly balancing the books or reporting poor profits, forcing some to file for bankruptcy.

DainBramageStudios – Tokugawa Shogunate
Feudal Dictatorship
-The Shogun declares war on the Emperor, mobilising the army (with strong British aid) in order to restore order to the country. British military advisers arrive to assist in modernization of the army. The French do likewise.
-The French are promised a silk monopoly for helping out in the war, with the British promised a tea monopoly (go figure) for their efforts.
-With heavy foreign investment, the construction of railways is now steadily advancing. Most railway development is intended to ship silk and tea from the hinterland to the ports.
-With the arrival of the French and British in the silk and tea plantations, confusion begins over who gets what plantations. The French are busy occupying the tea plantations, and seem reluctant to give them over to the British.

Satansick – Centralist Republic of Mexico
Military dictatorship
-A draft is brought in, collecting the eldest sons of families in Mexico. Whilst unpopular, it fills the army with a large number of men, with somewhat poor morale and skills.
-These armies are sent to California and Yucatan to crush the rebellions there. Whilst California is crushed in the matter of several weeks, Yucatan remains unruly for many months. Several generals suggest making a final push on Texas to regain rightful Mexican lands and restore order to the country.
-Breech loading cannon begins to slowly make its way into military use. Unfortunately, they are unreliable and quite valuable too. With the use of rifling, they can be happily sat a considerable distance away from enemy positions, and are not only more accurate, but fire faster as well.
-The treaty signed with the French formally brings Mexico into an alliance with France. The downside is that Mexico has become effectively a French puppet state. The French navy and army immediately sail over to help crush the rebellions in Mexico and restore stability to this new asset.
-The Mexican government however, manages to ensure that food supplies are kept relatively secure. The army is fed well, and some supplies given by the French help in this process too. As for the rural inhabitants, subsistence agriculture or plantation/feudal style systems dominate.
-To help cement control in the north, Mexican immigrants are encouraged to migrate north into New Mexico and California. Slowly they help to keep the American migrants pushing for secession a minority.
-Plans are drawn up for developing faster firing weaponry, but it is unsure as to how this will be achieved. Existing technical skills and production facilities seems to make it impossible to develop a rapid fire anti-infantry weapon, with the closest being grapeshot (or giant shotgun shells in cannon).

Mr Face – North German Federation
Absolute monarchy
-Following the Mexican developments, the Prussian army has begun to look into the development of rifled and breechloading artillery pieces. Whilst shown to be expensive, it seems likely they have a better capability to produce them than Mexico does.
-Buying your way into the military is now clamped down on, with entrance examinations being more strictly applied to all entering officers and increasing focus on a meritocratic system.
-The military advisor advocates the establishment of planning systems and headquarters, with good communication links so as to plan out entire wars.
-Relations with the German states continue to improve gradually, but all of them seem universally opposed to political integration.
-Grants and charters for railroads are established, with the number of railway lines gradually increasing throughout Germany. Due to the many borders, competing companies, local regulations, laws and even gauges, this early network is hardly near anything resembling integrated. The poor power and speed of locomotives also means that concerns over border checks have not become a major issue yet.
-The first municipal elections are held in Prussia, with universal suffrage for all men. Due to the high level of corruption and existing power of the aristocracy, these councils hold very little actual power. Only in the larger towns and cities with an industrial base do they have any kind of influence. Even then, they have to work within the framework of the existing Prussian legal system.
-The first co-operative stores are opened. However, due to many concerns over corruption and poor regulation of them, they do not seem to have any large effect.
-The Berlin College for Higher Education is founded, seeking to help educate people in higher education. This helps considerably with improving education in Berlin, although the middle and upper classes make the majority of people who attend it.
-There are encouragements for the textile industry, but due to the cost of importing cotton and processing it (compared to Britain) it does not really get anywhere.
-A rival scientist in Prussia develops an electric motor similar to that of Thomas Davenport, with some financial backing.
-A new factory organisation system is introduced via a new law, whereby factory owners are legally obligated to have a clock present at all times for workers, to allow them access to a timetable of their working hours, and to have regular shifts. The maximum working hours however, have yet to be determined.
-Rifling machines begin to be exported to Brazil.

Firefox42 – United States of America
Constitutional Republic
-The American army arrives in California, where they meet several hundred rebels, begin to help train them and give weaponry. The arrival of the Mexican and French armies proves problematic, as they wipe out the rebels and force the Americans to leave Mexico. They manage to cling onto Utah however for the time being, as the French and Mexicans have yet to advance that far north.
-Despite this, the USA declares that the California Republic is recognised as an independent state. Many people in the country are still furious that Oregon is still in British hands, and that nothing has been done to rectify this. The inability of the American government to retain Oregon, let alone support a rebellion, is a massive blow to the ability of the government to be taken seriously.
-Attempts to reduce taxes in the American south fails, due to the fact the Federal government has almost no influence over taxation, and in fact collects most revenue from tariffs.
-Public schools are encouraged by the Federal government, but ultimately the decision to establish them is up to the states. The Northeastern states do take the arguments put forth seriously however, and begin to work towards establishing public schooling based off the Prussian model.
-Development of the dynamo is done to the extent that it can now be connected to a windmill or watermill. Obvious issues with both means that the power output is not only very low, but unreliable. The inability to store this energy is also problematic too.

Ruskie – Egypt Eyalet
Sultanate
-The establishment of new barracks and military colleges throughout the country has begun to come to an end, as now they seem to be well dispersed throughout the country.
-With the construction of a railway in the Suez underway, tariffs and tolls are reduced in the area so as to help encourage the development and expansion of trade in the area.
-With the bureaucracy and railway networks starting to slowly expand, there is also a noted critical shortage of bureaucrats, engineers and surveyors. To remedy this, an engineering and law school is established in Cairo to help educate the new professionals needed to make Egypt great.
-Surveys begin in the Suez, whereby they determine that the difference in sea level height on both sides is essentially insignificant, making a canal feasible.
-New ideas are starting to come into Egypt, with reforms to introduce meritocracy into the military, the establishment of banks and stock exchanges and many new industrial and agricultural pieces of machinery from automated chopping blocks to threshing machines and lathes.
-With the French being supportive of the Egyptian regime (especially as the British don’t seem to be forcing the French to back down), the Ottomans are fearful about growing Egyptian power. They declare war on Egypt, and are soundly defeated at the the Battle of Nezib. The Ottoman Empire is in complete disarray and looking as though it is on the verge of collapse.

Daniel Smith – United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
Constitutional Monarchy
-The Anti-Corn Law League is founded in Manchester.
-The Daoguang Emperor appoints Lin Zexu as the governor of Canton with the goal of eliminating the opium trade. Lin Zexu bans the sale of opium, demands that all opium be surrendered to the Chinese authorities, and requires that all foreign traders sign a 'no opium trade' bond the breaking of which was punishable by death. Lin also closes the channel to Canton, effectively holding British traders hostage in Canton.
-The South Georgian, Sandwich, Pitcairn, Polynesian and Marshal Islands are all claimed by Britain. Of the isles, Pitcairn is annexed. Polynesia is too big. The Marshal claim is contested by Spain. South Georgia is not recognised due to the lack of human settlement. The Sandwich Islands are already ruled by the King of Hawaii (whom is promptly invaded in a French military intervention due to hostile action against Catholics).
-An invasion begins on the central Indian states. This is clearly the last straw, and the army begins to break down due to mutinies and attrition. Many princes and local rulers once dispossessed are now starting to have uprisings against British rule in one of the biggest threats to British rule on the subcontinent to date. Many alliances are quickly starting to dissolve, but many other local Indian rulers are quite satisfied with, or even dependent on the British, are make moves to restore order.
-Attempts to buy Portuguese and French land in India both fail after both states refuse to sell their territories.
-Charters for silver mines are established in Ontario to help encourage the development of silver mining, whilst also coal mines are being expanded in Britain and abroad.
-The Universal Suffrage bill of 1839 allows all men and women ages 16 and older regardless of race/nationality/sex/other the right to vote within the lands of the United Kingdom and her territories.
-The bill is thrown out by the House of Commons, having been taken for a practical joke.
-The territories of the Empire are reorganised for census purposes, to be England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Colombia, Oceania, India, South Africa, Guyana, Caribbean and Other. The next census is due early next decade.
-British railway industry is undergoing massive expansion, although there are fears it is quickly turning into a rampant speculation bubble.
-A form of hot air balloon is developed, being able to lift aprox 180 kilograms to considerable heights.
-The French blockade of Argentina and Texas is starting to seriously harm British trade. The Brazilian invasion of Argentina and Mexican reconquest of California and Texas is starting to seriously undermine British influence. Most people are now strongly demanding the British take action against the French and their allies.
-Military aid is sent to the Japanese shogun to assist in the civil war currently ongoing. In return, the British are promised a tea monopoly.
-The French intervention in Japan has been discovered to have badly affected British merchants, who to their dismay discover the French occupying tea producing areas in Japan. There are calls for a forced removal of the French.
-With the French-supported Egyptians causing major defeats to the Ottoman Empire, there are also strong demands to curtail Egyptian power as the Ottoman Empire looks as though it may collapse, destabilising the area.

HeavyGuy – Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
Constitutional Republic
- The Venezuelan Armed Forces construct a large military Headquarters near Caracas, to provide faster response times to attacks on the countries capital.
-In diplomatic policy, neutrality is strongly encouraged, with the state not wishing to involve itself in any future conflict for the time being.
- The Venezuelans celebration of "woo we're independent" comes to an end quickly after a plant pot falls off a shelf and shatters on the floor. Out of the plant pot crawl 5 Polish Immigrants, who are saved rather quickly.
- Venezuela manages to invent a crude type of early landmine. It is discovered (accidentally) that it can blow the legs off a human. Sadly, it is of poor reliability.

Mackalda2k6 – Republic of Texas
Constitutional Republic
-Back country farmers answering the call of duty are sent to the Rio Grande to protect against the Mexicans. After several hundred men arrive, the Texan Army withdraws to the border with New Mexico, regrouping with the other two armies.
-One Texan army circumvents the Mexican fort system by going through Colorado. The three armies then launch a series of surprise attacks on Mexican forts along the border. Initial successes are noted, but French reinforcements end up besieging the forts. The arrival of Mexican breechloading guns later pummels these forts into submission and forces several forts to surrender. Texan reinforcements meant to arrive in California never arrive, and Texas only manages to cling onto a small part of Colorado.
-Mirabeau B. Lamar is elected president and Sam Houston, using his past experience of living with the Native American tribes, is sent as an ambassador to the friendly Indians. An Ambassador from the Republic of California is received and a Texan ambassador is sent to them as well. The Texan ambassador is then subsequently taken into custody by the Mexican army.
-Slave brokers arrive in Virginia to try and negotiate the sale of slaves, but the transaction is blocked when it is discovered that international slave trading is illegal in the USA.
-To try and aid in the movement of armies, Macadam roads begin construction throughout Texas, well suited to the climate of the area. Construction is slow however, amid fears of French or Mexican arrival.
-Trade with the United States is forced to become an overland affair when a French blockade begins on the country. Colt revolvers manage to be bought and shipped overland however, and are given to cavalry units.

Obnobs – Swedish-Norwegian Republic
Constitutional Monarchy
-Railway construction is further encouraged with large subsidies, with most focus being put into doubling up the capacity of existing lines.
-Similar subsidies are given towards port and factory expansion, hoping to increase their respective capacities.
-Further research is made into flight technology, although progress is slow and seen as wasteful.

Thelurker1234 – The Russian Empire
Prussian Constitutional Monarchy
-Further military reforms are underway, and now the majority of all the old style generals seem to be gone now, although it was a deeply unpopular move. There are rumours of dissent among the old generals.
-Further military expansion into the steppes is conducted, although the new generals demand a stop to expansion for the time being, so as to let the mother country digest her conquests. The war in the steppes begins to slow down, especially as the army is suffering a great deal of attrition and hostility from the local population.
-Some machine tools and engineers are shipped down to Siam, where they offer to help with industrialization of the country.
-A surveying team is assembled, with the intention of constructing a transcontinental railway through Russia. The Tsar is told that this plan seems ludicrous, and that the team will take years to even survey the land.
-Education reforms begin, with the rooting out of bad teachers to try and streamline education. A similar process is occurring with the bureaucracy, hoping to improve it along modern lines.
-Teachers, Generals and Bureacrats whom are recently unemployed have begun to join up into various coalitions, particularly with the clergy and nobility (angry that no compensation for the serfs has been given) too, angry at the pace and rate of reforms being undertaken by the tsar, comparable to that of Tsar Pytor 1st.
-Financial aid programs begin to try and move recently freed serfs into land in central Siberia to help colonise (and therefore cement power) in the area. Some are also supported if they wish to migrate to the growing industrial towns, although most set up cottage industries as opposed to factories due to an underdeveloped industry.

MountainWatcher – Rattanakosin Kingdom
Absolute Monarchy
-A colonial program begins in northern Papua New Guinea, although holding onto the Kingdoms colonial possessions is somewhat difficult due to constant native raids and diseases. The military budget increases, with hopes that a larger army can hold off the attacks.
-Mines are established in Borneo, using slave labour to extract all the precious minerals. However, the terrible working conditions are starting to kill a lot of them off. Coal, gold and diamond are extracted and seem to be in high demand.
-It is then suddenly realised that a great deal of plants cover all the land. The solution is agreed to be systematic deforestation, with plantations, farms and mines being set up in those areas afterwards. Malaria rates understandably skyrocket, and loads of slaves, soldiers and migrants start dying.
-With the sale of raw materials, slaves continue to be bought from Madagascar (to replace the ones dying from non-malarial causes). Gun factories are also being slowly established with the extra dosh, aided by Russian intervention.
-A tax for land-owners that own native Thai serfs that increases with the amount of Thai serfs is introduced. The landowners are however exempt from this tax if they replace the serfs with slaves bought from the government. Very quickly, the nobility begins to free their tenants whilst buying slaves from the government. In any case, the government wins in the end (much to the annoyance of the nobles) with lots of money. The freed serfs immediately move to the towns, due to few opportunities in the countryside, or join the army.
-Books on military theory are being imported and translated, then subsequently edited and adapted for use in the Kingdoms military.

Zillamaster55 – Império do Brasil
Constitutional Monarchy
-War is declared on the shocked country of Argentina (and to the shock of many in Brazil). The Brazilian army quickly mobilises, and uses their fancy new rifles to wither down the armies of the Argentines. Although the north is quickly seized, the city of Cordoba is reinforced by the Argentine army, and a long siege begins.
-All neighbours to Brazil are given a harsh message “Don’t fuck with us”. Quite quickly, the Chilean-Peruvian army is left without Argentine help, and soon loses at the battle of Yungay. The war in the Peru-Bolivian confederation has become greatly messier with the introduction of Brazil (whom seems to be nominally on the French and Peru-Bolivian side).
-A peasant army storms Goya, but due to poor morale and disorganisation, they are quickly seen off by well trained cavalry units and some lucky artillery shots.
-The Peru-Bolivian confederation reorganises after winning the battle of Yungay, and begins a campaign to systematically eradicate opposition to the regime, starting by a swift march southwards into Chile.
- The few ships that Argentina has are sunk by the (somewhat) larger navy of the Brazilians, and their ports are blockaded (although the French already are blockading the country). Later, both countries are forced to engage in naval warfare with Chile, helping to swing the war decisively in Peru-Bolivian favour.
-The French, with increasing confidence and less British pressure on them, moves into Argentina as part of the ongoing war it has with them.
-Forests throughout Brazil begin to be systematically cleared for agricultural use. Malaria rates skyrocket, followed shortly by agricultural production. Coffee is a popular crop.
-Taxes rise on the landowning classes, with the Emperor using the money to fund his wars.
-Three Argentinean generals are executed on the spot, their bodies tossed into the Amazon upon a river raft, where they make their way into a village’s irrigation system, frightening them.
- Argentinean flags are burnt in the streets of Rio, as citizens are ecstatic to reclaim their rightful territory.
-Hundreds of Argentinean refugees are met with some resistance in Rio, but the rest of the country lets them in, hoping that more people will raise the Brazilian flag.
-A new flag is created, with the slogan removed and a red border created. The slogan, in Portuguese, has been removed and replaced with red. The red represents the blood of Christ, who blessed the Portuguese to release the empire.

Chernobyl426 – Persia
Absolute monarchy
-The army is being prepared for what seems to be an invasion of Pakistan.
-An offer of alliance is offered to the Ottoman Empire, whom rejects it.
-Subsidies are given to foreign mining entrepreneurs, who help to expand the mineral industry in the country.

Damian0358 – Kingdom of Bohemia-Moravia
Substate of Austrian Empire
-The Republic of Bohemia-Moravia is released as a vassal state of the Austrian Empire, with a treaty being signed. The treaty allows the Kingdom to ally with any Slavic nation, and to form a Czech legion. For Austria, the Czechs must pay taxes, support them in military conflict, new land acquisitions must remain under nominal Austrian control, and the recognition that the Emperor of Austria is supreme along with his laws.
-The Czech legion is formed as the Kingdoms army. A military academy is also established, with the intention of training officers for the army. Some graduates are permitted to go into the Austrian army.
-Diplomats are immediately sent to declare alliances with Slavs within the Austrian Empire. Due to the fact no sovereign state of Slavs exists within the empire (minus themselves) this is somewhat difficult.
-Vegetable, grain, fruit and meat production is encouraged with agricultural subsidies, intended to boost production of those respective crops.
-A new law is made to restrict the amount of beer a person can drink in a month. The amount one person can drink in a month is 2-3 beers, anything over will lead to a fine. This law is immediately ignored, as most people arrested are let off by sympathetic judges (if the police even bother to record down the crime). The inability to track beer consumption is a disadvantage too.
-Weapons are being looked at to see if there are any ways to improve them. Due to the top military engineers of the nation spending much of their time staring at weapons thinking of ways to make them better, nothing actually ends up happening.

Salricci – Austrian Empire
Absolute Monarchy
-The Austrian military begins to send military technologies (such as new guns and artillery) to Egypt, alongside military advisers to help toughen up the army.
-Watchtowers begin to be built along the border with the Ottoman Empire, due to fears over rising unrest in the area and potential conflict.
-Free trade treaties are requested with The Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Spain and France. All agree to a removal of tariffs which benefit Austria.
-A project begins to build railroads across Austria, so as to connect the country up. Given the inexperience of Austria in railway building, a great deal of equipment is being imported from Britain. Large subsidies are also used to ensure steady expansion of the railways.
-Development of breechloading artillery (similar to the Mexican models) begins. There is also development of new coal cleaning processes and of machine tool manufacturing methods. New military theory and medical treatments are also under development, mostly for use in the military.

Revolutionary Republic
-Several proclamations are made hurriedly as the new Republic hastily forms itself. The lack of support from the Mexican population however, the support of ragtag groups of basically guerrilla fighters, plus heavy French and Mexican intervention, has resulted in the collapse of the Republic.
-San Francisco is quickly taken by a single French ship, which destroyed one of the few houses there, and forced the tiny number of men to surrender. The French march onshore and officially dissolve the republic.

Absolute Monarchy
- Conscription begins at 18 for 3 years, till the people are aged 21. For some reason, training is also done so combat can be done whilst unarmed. Unfortunately, many people try to dodge conscription by fleeing into the countryside or abroad.
-Rice and salt production begins with the establishment of paddies. Slaves are also still being exported in return for staple rice.
-Attempts to improve agriculture proceed, although being undercut by foreign rice means that domestic rice production is doing rather poorly. Animal husbandry has greater success however, with poultry, pigs and cattle doing well.
-Mines are being established to look for mineral wealth. Ilmenite is discovered, and with the aid of some chemists, it is discovered that iron sulphate and titanium dioxide can be produced, both with reasonable applications.
-An application of the works of Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī, Avicenna, Abū Kāmil Shujāʿ ibn Aslam and Fibonacci is done for education.
-A research department is formed for the country, based around the works of the prior mentioned people.
-The government declares Madagascar a new continent, changing the capitals name to "Madagascar, The City".
-Cannibalisation is permitted for foreigners, although nobody takes up the offer.
- Rape of slaves in recommended but rape to death is only allowed if they have at least 4 kids. Despite this generous offer, nobody really takes it up. A few wealthy psychopaths do however.
-A police force is formed, seemingly based along military lines.
-The country is renamed to “People of Country Madagascar at Continent Madagascar”.
