-The Japanese ask the British and French to blockade the ports currently held by the Emperor. With hostilities breaking out, the British and French start fighting among themselves, seemingly for control of Japan. The ports are often captured by both sides, and shelled multiple times. The Emperor is unable to hold onto them, and is forced to move inland.
-Meanwhile, the main Shogunate armies surround the Emperor's eastern strongholds on Honshu, and then invade simultaneously, using foreign weapons to pummel them into submission. Skirmishing battles break out often elsewhere. Honshu is slowly secured, but the other islands are quickly falling.
-Given that the French and British are not at war with the Shogunate (but with the Emperor) they have little actual influence inland.
-The Emperor declares that whatever foreign power will support him in regaining power shall have favourable treaties with the state once unified.
-The Republic of Ezo is founded, separate from both the Shogunate and Emperor (in Hokkaido). It then writes a constitution and begins to conscript people.
-With split French and British help (both of whom are at war), assistance is difficult to provide to them.
-The French demand that the Shogunate give them rights both the British and French currently possess (plus more or less banning discouraging British trade) in return for a full invasion to crush the Emperor.

- Order is finally restored to California by the Mexican army, who follow up with the construction and expansion of forts and watchtowers. Encouraged migration here of Mexican nationals is also undertaken, and San Francisco ends up growing into a small fishing village.
-An invasion of Texas begins, starting with a sudden attack on all the border forts using heavy artillery strikes.
-The United States is denounced by the Mexican ambassador, and to rub salt in the wound, tariffs on cotton farmers are eliminated in Mexico. This bodes well for the French, who enjoy importing this cheaper Mexican cotton.
-Flyers are distributed, boasting the fact that the Californian rebels are defeated. To prevent further problems with Yucatan, they grant the area a degree of self autonomy.
-Work into the development of breechloading canister shot artillery begins, given the efficacy of regular canister shot on the battlefield.
-Britain however, declares war on Mexico, and quickly takes hold of most forts and watchtowers along the Californian coast. Inland military activity results in limited skirmishing actions. Although a large battle takes place nearby the highly contested village of San Francisco, the results of the battle are inconclusive. Superior naval support later drives off the Mexicans however.
-The United States decides to invade Mexico too, reinforcing Utah and heading for California, which is currently being filled with hastily constructed forts.

-The Kaiser is sent a Thai prostitute, being told she is better than any geisha.
-New thinkers arise with regards to military thought, and they stress the adoption of rapid deployment, conscription, industrial complexes for producing arms and munitions, plus observation balloons.
-The Prussian ambassadors condemn the Mexican invasion of California, despite California not being recognised as a sovereign state by Prussia, or that California is actually Mexican.. The other German states are quick to point out that putting pressure on France would help end the conflict in Mexico.
-Military technology and advisers continue to travel to Austria, Russia and Egypt, to help in the development and strengthening of those respective states military forces.
-Prussia embargoes Madegascar. This has almost no effect, given that they do not trade with each other anyways.
-Texas begins to be supplied with firearms, although actual manpower is a critical factor. With French aid, the Mexicans seem to be crushing Texan resistance.
-Lanthanum is attempted to be purified, although chemists have little success. Little tangible use for it exists either.
-Work begins into establishing telegraph lines alongside railways. An act is passed to enforce the laying of cable alongside every railway line established. The differing gauges for track however makes it difficult for the whole network to be integrated, especially as it consists of small companies.
-Grove cells begin research into them to see their integration into telegraph lines. The need for a constant voltage and the cells tendency to leak poisonous gas makes it of limited use however.
-Vulcanised rubber is created in German labs, although the method of producing it is poorly understood.
-A constitution is adopted, setting out basic rights and “limiting” the powers of the monarch. These limitations of power are poorly defined however. The papers print slightly more scandalous papers, but the authorities tolerate it slightly more than usual.
-The first co-operative store law is passed. Under the act, central holding boxes for funds are now insured. The number of shops starts to grow, offering lower prices for members of the co-op, whilst giving proceeds of the profits to the members as well.
-An act to set maximum working hours at eight is established, but faces almost universal opposition. A ten hour day is argued by most of the landed and agricultural workers, whilst the liberals want it even higher. Workers complain bitterly about reduced wages due to lower working hours, but at least unemployment is curbed somewhat.
-Metropolitan police forces are being established throughout Prussia to help reduce crime.
-The Daguerreotype camera is used to take a picture of the Prussian monarch, whose patronage encourages the widespread adoption of it to accelerate.
-An embargo is placed on the Ottoman Empire.
-Despite all the new policies undertaken by the German state, the loss of British and French markets has proven problematic for German industry.

-Despite the war being unpopular, it is followed through just barely under the message that the Mexican people need liberation from their government and the French.

-The entire army is mobilised, to assist in the war of independence from the Ottoman Empire.
-The main portion of the army heads east, initially to prevent an Ottoman counteroffensive in the north. A march is made on Baghdad, which is quickly captured in a brutal siege where the use of heavy artillery batteries and European style drilling of the soldiers helped push the defenders from the city. The aged and decrepit Ottoman army is no match, and within several months resistance quickly collapses. The main bulk of the Egyptian army then moves to border Anatolia where Ottoman authority is quickly collapsing. A smaller expeditionary force takes control of Libya.
-With a large degree of foreign assistance and heavy funding of industry, foreign weaponry is being mass produced for use by the army, especially as it swells in size to deal with the war.
-Egypt announces that it is now an independent nation and not an eyalet of the Ottoman Empire, with other countries are encouraged to create formal embassies in Egypt. It promptly renames itself to the Kingdom of Egypt, styling itself as a western style monarchy like Prussia or Austria.
-A note is sent to Abdülmecid I saying that Egypt is no longer an eyalet of the Ottoman Empire and he will be removed due to the Falcon-like wisdom of the Egyptians. He subsequently sues for peace, offering full independence in return for a return to the old borders.
-Tariffs are further reduced, and taxes also reduced so as to encourage investment and economic growth. Unfortunately, a large amount of investment is foreign rather than domestic and due to economic recession in Europe, cotton mill expansion has slowed due to decreased demand. The demand for weapons and munitions is causing those related industries to grow quite spectacularly.
-As new industrial and commercial technologies trickle into Egypt, agricultural machinery and private banks are starting to be introduced as agriculture modernises.
-Despite attempts to expand arms production and general efficiency, the European slump means that acquiring new machinery for the factories (mainly from Britain) is difficult, despite increased demand for weaponry as wars are now frequently ongoing.
-The advent of new political ideas and concepts has begun to slowly convert Egypt from the old system into a heavily French influenced system of governance.

-The British declare war on the Ottoman Empire, amid heavy opposition from parliament and the aristocracy. Cyprus is taken in a protracted siege by the Royal Navy, which sees some of the first usage of steamships in warfare. The coastal forts are bombarded along with lighthouses, and the battered and shocked Ottoman forces surrender quickly. A British frigate is later caught on some rocks nearby Nicosia and sinks.
-The British declares war on Mexico, and this is quickly followed by a declaration of limited warfare by the French in order to assist their ally. An embargo begins in combination with most warfare being skirmishing actions.
-It quickly balloons due to incidents in Japan worsening relations. Full scale naval warfare is on the go, with armies fighting in the colonies. No battles in mainland Europe on a large scale have yet to occur, minus large naval engagements in the North Sea and Atlantic. These battles are among the first in which screw-driven steamships are used in warfare, and they outperform paddle steamers.
-After rampant speculation occurs, it is noted that some railway companies were set up with dishonest intentions. Investor confidence collapses, and a lot of early railway companies go bankrupt. A depression follows soon after once an embargo with France occurs. It ends up spreading to effect markets worldwide.
-The embargo contributes to a slump in industry and a rapid rise in the price of food. The Anti-corn law league gains a massive deal of popular support, which holds a massive rally in Hyde Park, demanding abolition of the Corn Laws, and to a lesser extent, tariffs.
-The British Navy lands in San Francisco after forcing the Mexican army to leave the village under sustained offshore artillery support.
In response to the rebelling Indians, a larger military force is mobilised to restore order. They manage to prevent the conflict from further spreading, but many civil servants and diplomats demand the government make concessions and stop wholesale annexation of land.
-Papua New Guinea is claimed by the British, although their claims are hotly contested by multiple countries.
-In an attempt to reverse ecological damage caused by the massive growth of rabbit populations, trees are planted wholesale in arid areas to reverse the spread of desert. The landowners and farmers are reluctant to follow through in the project; it suffers from poor funding, and often a great number of the trees die.
-Attempts at revision of the poor laws are done by trying to give the homeless some kind of basic training. The lack of coherent central plans for these actions, lack of coordination over how to train the people, and poor funding, results in pretty much nothing happening.
-The grain elevator is invented, and the first one is constructed in London to handle grain.
-The British government is facing a severe spending deficit (mostly on the military), in combination with economic failure.

- A trigger mechanism is worked on for the new (and fairly crude) landmine. Field tests seem to show that it works, though it proves to be a double edged sword. The testers are killed when they accidentally apply pressure to the trigger mechanism. However, this also proves that the mechanism works. Further work is conducted into making them more reliable and easier to mass produce.
- Venezuela throws a stone over the border into Colombia. A small war breaks out between six men, throwing small stones at one another. They eventually give up and go home.
-Despite economic stagnation starting to affect the country, the number of Polish immigrants coming in is still quite a considerable number, due to the government encouraging the Polish to migrate here. Some tensions due to cultural differences occur sometimes but things seem otherwise fine for now.
- Plant pots are broken everywhere in Venezuela. Polish immigrants are blamed by the newspapers, but Venezuelan officials can't seem to pinpoint how they manage to damage so much pottery, even when there are no Polish people around or they seem to be keeping to themselves.

-Seeking greater efficiency from steam engines, the compound steam engine is introduced to Sweden, and begins gradual adoption. Manufacture of them is difficult due to a lack of machine tools however, produced mainly overseas.
-Taxes are raised on businesses that outsource work. Due to this not really being done at the moment by any company, the act passes without much hubris and has little effect.

-The Steppes are declared to be sole possession of the Russian Empire. Wars and skirmishes still occur frequently in newly conquered areas, but are (gradually) winding down.
-To try and prevent the bureaucracy, officers, clergy and intelligentsia whom lost their jobs from potentially rebelling, a small pension is granted. The 9 months of pay is of little consolation however. Many press for further demands, and talks of a coup are rapidly spreading. Economic stagnation worsens the matter further.
-A Russian bill of rights is published and “adopted” as part of a constitution. To what extent it applies in practice is hotly contested. Certainly the vast majority of the population (landless agricultural workers, who make up roughly 80%) do not seem to be seeing a great improvement in things over 5 years ago, minus marginal gains in education for some, alongside some marginally better economic and personal freedoms. Most families still have 8 children, most people are still tied to the land, most land is inflexibly and inefficiently managed with little investment or development of land going on. Transport is still horrifically poor, and capitalism seems incredibly underdeveloped. Any industry that exists, are mostly islands of cottage industries in the midst of rural poverty.

-To prevent high rates of malaria, there is a waiting period established on land after it has been cleared of vegetation and drainage channels dug. Whilst this reduces disease (minus amongst the loggers and diggers), it has the effect of raising land prices in the short term, followed by accelerating the rate of vegetation clearing.
-State schools are established for female entertainers (Thai geishas essentially). They do at least manage to help regulate the industry and begin to bring it to a high enough level of respectability for Europeans to start visiting.
-Attempts to import artillery are thwarted due to high prices and low availability of existing artillery pieces, alongside little money available for the Thai state to spend on them. The complete works of Michael Faraday to date manage to be translated and imported however, providing an essential boon to the field of physics in the country.

-The army starts to slowly demobilise, cheered on as heroes when they return home. Flowers are thrown on them, and then they go back to crushing poverty in the fields or the smoggy towns and cities.
-A member of cabinet is going to be voted in as leader of Argentina, but the French oppose this measure. The French want a pro-French government formed for the administration of Argentina, and to legislate laws favouring French businesses.
-Argentine citizens are now legally classified as Brazilians. A number move to Brazil (embittered) whilst the rest try to return to Argentina.
-Taxes are to remain low on returning soldiers, as compensation for any issues they faced on the war. Due to the general lack of income tax, this law is essentially useless.
-A mint is established to make gold coins to help strengthen Brazilian currency.
-A road is planned to help connect French Guyana to Brazil, and the French enter talks with Brazil about plans in the area.
-The French propose the following:
1. Argentina retains a government that is led by pro-french and pro-brazilian ministers. Under this, Argentina would remain independent, but under effective French and Brazilian control.
2. An alliance is formed, along with a reduction of tariffs on raw materials produced in Brazil in return for Brazil buying French manufactured goods (such as firearms, munitions, machinery, etc).
3. Forcing Chile to back down in the Peru-Bolivian war.
-A new process of making rifled cannon has been introduced, whereby the cannon is cast as a solid piece of iron, and then drilled with heavy industrial machinery. This process allows for the production of rifled cannon with considerable ease.
-Steam engines are being installed in mills and factories slowly in Brazil. The lack of machine tools impedes this however.

-A trading treaty is offered to Nejd with an offer of alliance as well. The latter is refused, but they do concede that there is some mutual benefit to be gained from trading operations.
-Attempts to reform education and agriculture go nowhere as no specific goal or objective is put in place, or even on how to do it. Token reforms and bureaucratic mess end up going nowhere.
-However, laws are brought in to improve the welfare of agricultural workers by making their overseers follow guidelines and be liable to be punished for bad management. The new overseers even have a few European educated among them, helping to bring about improvements in agriculture or managing workers (although this is a gradual ad hoc process).

-The intelligentsia of the Kingdom are sent to various Slavic constituent lands in the Austrian Empire to help educate the people in those lands in the fields of military theory and diplomacy.
-Roads undergo a major rejuvenation programme, which British inspired engineers (working in the wake of men like Thomas Telford) work on. The lack of railways means they are still quite viable in these lands, and Tarmacadam roads become popular for use by stagecoaches. Travel times are halved between the main urban areas in the kingdom. Coaching inns and road related industries undergo a small expansion as a result.
-Weapon industries are also being encouraged, and seem to be expanding considerably with both support from the state and the high demand for weapons and munitions as a result of ongoing wars.
-The "drinking limit" law has been altered so that there is at least one police officer in each bar, so that they can watch how much each person drinks, giving them a fine as soon as they go over the limit and removing them from the bar. The law also forbids beer from being drank at home, while wine is allowed to be drunk at home.*
-The law is still considerably unpopular, and many cases of corruption by the pretty poorly paid police and many people simply ignoring the law still exist. However, by the end of the year, breweries report that a growth in demand for beer is starting to decline. Many people (especially the wealthy) ignore the law at home due to the problem of monitoring such crime (and being able to buy their way out of trouble). For some reason, consumption of cheap alcohol seems to carry a harsher penalty than costlier and more refined variants. The prisons start to get overcrowed. However, wine production has gone up (with the vinters being heavily supportive of the law, and trying to edit it so only wine may be drunk in unlimited amounts).
-A pistol using pinfire cartridges as ammunition has been invented in the Kingdom.

-Railway construction is heavily advocated by Austria, who puts pressure on the South German states to pass legislation favouring railway companies. The ongoing trade recession and lack of machine parts from the British impedes this strongly however.
-Austria establishes a free trade union with the state of Bavaria.
-To compensate for the lack of machine tool parts, a steam engine factory is set up with heavy government aid, followed by a railway to connect this industrial area to a nearby coal and iron field. New ironworking techniques are also introduced, helping to remove sulphur impurities from the iron.
-New anaesthetics, antiseptics and surgery methods are introduced into hospitals. Talk of coordination of a large scale smallpox vaccination program is also underway.

-In Response to the war in neighbouring Argentina, The Chilean military is ordered to begin construction of fortifications and lookout posts in the Andes Mountains and on Chile's borders. This is hampered somewhat by the advance of the Peru-Bolivian armies in the north of the country, who repeatedly push the Chilean armies south (whom has lost Argentine assistance).
-A Military headquarters is set up in Valparaiso, covering the army, navy and newly formed coast guard. With the New Headquarters set up, a mass recruitment drive begins, with soldiers being offered cheap land once they complete their military service. The question of where all this free land will come from is still up for debate, alongside supplying the army as well.
-The Chilean Coast Guard is formed to keep an eye on the coasts of the nation and monitor goods going in and out of its ports.*The French Navy prevents it from doing anything at the moment, due to an ongoing naval blockade. As a result of the blockade and the war, very few people or goods are moving over the borders.
-Valparaiso is declared a Laizze-Faire city, although to the extent which government should stay out is questionable, due to the inability of the free market to dislodge the French naval blockade.
-The Capital of Chile is moved to the port city of Valparaiso, with a new Presidential and parliament buildings being constructed. A Department of Immigration and Customs is set up to manage immigration to Chile as well. Very little is getting done however, due to the ongoing war and blockade.
-A ramshackle expedition of soldiers and colonists are sent south to settle land for the country of Chile.
-Chile looks to modernize its rifles and military tactics, attempting to copy Brazilian and Mexican design. The lack of models to copy due to poor communications, the blockade, and the war, hampers the project however.
-The French demand the Chileans agree to a peace treaty whereby they stay out of Peru-Bolivia and also submit to French influence (in return for trading treaties and allowing the growth of French business).

-Wushu (Kung-fu - the term and the martial arts), Qigong and T'ai chi ch'uan is required for military training, with all soldiers to be trained extensively in use of this martial art. Officers with more than 5 years of training have to learn/train the methods for each of the Eighteen Arms of Wushu.
-With the help of Yang Luchan research begins for an improvement of Wushu ( the martial art(s) ) applied on the military training.
-Diplomatic relations are formally reopened for regular talks, for Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim. They seem bemused to see that the Manchu state is offering economic aid to help with various projects in their respective countries. The Dali lama is happy that he can oppress his serfs more with the new martial arts information he has been given.
-In a large “going back to the country” movement, a massive focus is made into the expansion of agriculture and raw material production. Many people are hired by the state to work in digging drainage, irrigation, ploughing fields, building fences, canals, barns, logging camps, quarries, fishing and other related industries.
-A gain has been made by the Empire, with raw material production now starting to grow much faster than it did before. Foreign nations are now able to travel here to buy raw materials (if the ports are open that is) at low prices in bulk. The Chinese start to open their ports more. Out goes the raw materials, and in come opium. Demand for the drug has begun to grow.
-The wages of workers for those at the bottom are increased by a small amount, which is rather costly for the Chinese state, given that it is spending a great deal of money already to develop the country.
-Investment into the textile industry is made, with the establishment of spinning mills to spin silk or cotton and then later produce it into manufactured goods. However, foreign competition (Japan being the nearest example) is starting to undercut Chinese manufacturing.
-Education starts at 3 until 18. Most of it is basic mathematics, but there is also teaching of Qigong and Buddhism.
-Harsher criminal laws are enacted as a tough on crime attitude is begun. Preventative detention and life imprisonment is used, increasingly for the opium addicts who commit crimes to fuel their habit, and those who attack foreign traders (due to their real or perceived corrosive influence).
-Corruption is dealt with most severely, with it punishable by life imprisonment. Whilst this has a little shock effect early on, loopholes and workarounds begin to be gradually made. Corruption has dropped, but only by a little.
-Books on physics, from the works of Faraday to Newton are imported and translated, with the intention of the Chinese to find out about electricity. A few voltaic batteries are imported as well.
