-Thomas Davenport obtains the first United States patent on an electric motor.
-Cooke and Wheatstone file their patent for the electrical telegraph in the United Kingdom.

DainBramageStudios – Tokugawa Shogunate
Feudal Dictatorship
-Price controls on all goods throughout the Empire are now removed. This comes at a great annoyance to many people throughout the empire used to the old prices, whom are starting to be angered by the increasing presence of foreign goods. Several riots break out, and the nobility refuses to allow this to happen. Some are starting to build up stockpiles of weaponry and are encouraging the peasantry to bear arms against the shogun.
-The Emperor Ninkō is being supported by the nobility who oppose the opening of Japan to the outside world, and he is quickly building up a power base.
-In response, many of the nobility are having their lands seized and are facing trial and execution. The Shogunate seems to be supported by both foreigners and the wealthy middle classes who are profiting from the expansion of trade and industry.
-Foreign investors are encouraged to come to Japan to trade, which they willingly do so in order to establish new businesses in this virgin market. Most businesses are French and British. This comes at a cost however, as many Japanese goods are heavily undercut by foreigners, leading to a collapse in many industries.
-The army is undergoing swift modernization with the adoption of Western fighting techniques and weaponry. The army seems more ambivalent about the matter, seeing that these new weapons will be of good use in coming wars.
-Several paddle steamers and locomotives are imported from the British isles, with the former becoming the core of the Japanese navy, and the latter being used for the first railway lines established in the country.
-Tensions have reached breaking point now, and some are worried that the entire land will break out into civil war. A British sailor is killed by a crowd of Japanese rioters, causing much concern amongst the British back home, whom demand justice.

Satansick – Centralist Republic of Mexico
Military dictatorship
-The French and Spanish are asked if they can spare military advisers to help reform their military. The Spanish refuse, and the French are receptive, and end up sending over a small number.
-Luchador masks are introduced for skirmishers to wear, making them somewhat more terrifying.
-Forts are constructed throughout the north of Mexico, mostly in California down through New Mexico towards Texas. They are mostly built to help control unrest, caused by the arrival of Texan missionaries and settlers.
-Value added tax is introduced, a form of consumer tax. It is highly resented by the population, but manages to bring in shitloads of cash. The money is subsequently used to construct arms factories to produce rifles for the army.
-Printing presses begin to distribute pamphlets on the superiority of Mexico to the United States of America. A number of American settlers are slightly annoyed by this and the construction of forts, and begin to form underground societies.
-In the arms factories, interchangeable and standardised machine and tool parts are introduced. Whenever a machine or gun breaks down, a spare part can be easily fitted to replace the broken part, in turn increasing the reliability of the machines and weaponry and reducing costs.

Mr Face – Kingdom of Prussia
Absolute monarchy
-A reorganisation is underway in the military, with old generals being replaced if they cannot deal with the new reforms.
-A minister of science is appointed, with his task this year being to conduct research into naval design. He travels to Britain and France, and returns to start the development of paddle steamers.
-A proposal for a German Alliance is suggested, with states being allowed their own say over religious matters. This does not go very far, and only the states which aren’t under Austrian influence choose to become members. The Austrians and their allies meanwhile end up becoming slightly more hostile.
-Ambassadors head to the Ottoman Empire to help improve relations, them being at least cordial.
-Relations with southern Germany and Austria take a nosedive after it is discovered that several Italian and Hungarian romantic writers, composers, newspaper editors and separatist movements are noted to have been receiving heavy donations from members of the Northern German alliance.
-A ministry is established to prevent price fixing, break up monopolies, and to encourage the adoption and spread of the German customs union.
-A Prussian merchant ship is boarded by the Russian navy, and a local Russian officer embezzles the supplies of gunpowder onboard. He complains to the Prussian embassy.
-The minister of defence argues that the development of military theory, establishment of conscription and military-industrial complexes is vital for improving the Prussian military.
-An alliance is formed with Krakow and the USA.

Firefox42 – United States of America
Constitutional Republic
-Michigan becomes the 26th state admitted to the union.
-The war against the Seminoles continues, with Fort Foster captured and the residents massacred. A few hundred Seminole are captured but later escape, and the casualties begin to mount up. A battle at Lake Okeechobee ends up with a strategic victory for the USA, despite considerable losses.
-An alliance is formed with the Kingdom of Prussia.
-The United Kingdom is sent a diplomat, demanding that American claims in the Northwest be respected, and the land returned to them. People begin to chant Fifty-four forty or fight!
-A railway station is established in the recently incorporated Chicago. The small and rapidly growing settlement has potential as a transportation hub, and a railway line begins construction from Galena to Chicago.
-The White house issues a statement, saying that the Northwest is rightfully an American possession and work shall be done to restore these lands. Talks with the British appear to be failing however, and some are demanding further action to make America’s manifest destiny true.
-Thomas Davenport is given a generous grant by the US government, allowing him to continue development of his electric motor. It has no seemingly practical use at the moment however besides being a novelty.

Ruskie – Egypt Eyalet
Sultanate
-Naval shipyards are established in Cairo, and further plans are intended for Palestine and Syria, where surveyors are already setting to work. 100 gun wooden frigates are also being fielded by the Egyptian navy. Soon after, some Prussian merchants agree to ship over steam engines for use in construction of paddle steamers, along with some machinery for rifling guns.
-Charters for trading ports are also signed, and many of the shipyards are also intended for private use. Europeans quickly begin to arrive in Egypt, ready to trade in the steadily improving ports. Merchant ships are also being ordered too.
-Railway lines begin to be constructed at considerable expense, starting in cities such as Alexandria and Cairo, and then slowly working outwards.
-Prussia and Russia are sent some money to show thanks for their assistance in helping Egypt.
-The bureaucracy is now rapidly expanding, filled with eggheads educated by the finest French education has to offer. A lot of corruption and inefficiencies exist however, due to its haphazard expansion and rapid modernization.
-The first steam engine parts manufactory is established in Egypt, which produces steam engines for use in applications from ships to railways to factories.

Daniel Smith – United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
Constitutional Monarchy
-18-year-old Queen Victoria accedes to the throne of the United Kingdom on the death of her uncle William IV without legitimate heirs. As a result, the personal union with Hannover also ends.
-In the Canadas, William Lyon Mackenzie leads the Upper Canada Rebellion and Louis-Joseph Papineau leads the Lower Canada Rebellion. Both rebellions are mostly spurred by demands for political reform in Canada.
-The British lay claim to a great deal of Canada, Central Australia, and New Zealand. In the case of New Zealand, many missionaries and Maori are angered by the lack of protection for natives, with increasing lawlessness and land requisitions causing major issues. The sale of guns to native tribes are causing large scale wars to break out, and the escalation of firearm ownership and lack of government control is causing New Zealand to gradually descend further into anarchy.
-The British formally annex Kerala in Southern India, much to the annoyance of local people and the former ruler.
-The Government of India Act 1837 is passed, its provisions called for the liquidation of the British East India Company (who had up to this point been ruling British India under the auspices of Parliament) and the transference of its functions to the British Crown. It is slightly unpopular, but nonetheless passed.
-A factory to produce revolvers is set up in Enfield, supplying revolvers for mostly military use.
-The British government also introduces a new postal system, whereby the sender of a letter or parcel pays for it in advance, putting a stamp on their parcel or letter, bearing the monarchs head and costing the princely sum of one penny.
-The lollipop is invented, a hard boiled sucrose ball on a stick that is sucked or licked. It is given to British soldiers as part of their rations and well received.
-A British sailor is killed in Japan by a crowd of Japanese rioters, causing much concern amongst the British back home, whom demand justice.

HeavyGuy – Free City of Kraków
Constitutional Republic
-Several small outposts are constructed around Kraków for defensive purposes, staffed irregularly by local militias and policing forces.
- Kraków asks Russia if they wish to join in an alliance, and they agree to forming one.
-The laissez faire economic policies are maintained as usual, making this a popular place for people to dodge tariffs, tolls and set up factories and businesses in the city.
- A ban on falling is temporarily put in place. The number of people falling over in the year falls. The number that fell is arrested for falling. No civilians are actually punished however, and the ban is removed.
-A new baton is introduced for use by the Kraków police, causing greater pain and damage for a lower price. A workshop is set up to produce them.

Mackalda2k6 – Republic of Texas
Constitutional Republic
-In response to native aggression, a standing, all volunteer army is created, comprised of volunteers. They are stationed outside of the rapidly expanding village of Houston, and begin rigorous training with particular emphasis on hit-and-run tactics.
-An agreement is submitted to the United States, providing for the establishment of a railroad to connect them. No reply is received yet, and no plans have been made.
-Zealous missionaries and settlers head westwards, fighting with various natives and later causing unrest in Mexican possessions. The heavy presence of the Mexican military and establishment of forts makes their work difficult however.
-Industrialists are encouraged to invest into Houston, starting with the development of railroads and cotton mills. The mills are costly to set up however, and the lack of fuel for steam engines or infrastructure for the movement of fuel means that water power is used. Ultimately the mills do not turn out to be profitable, and the lawlessness in Houston means it has poor economic viability anyways.
-The cotton plantations meanwhile expand, with land grants only handed out to farmers willing to sell food produce. The farmers end up growing cotton after purchasing the land, for it is more economically viable. The spread of railways and expansion of ports assists greatly in this.

Obnobs – Swedish-Norwegian Republic
Constitutional Monarchy
-A census is carried out to count the number of people in the Republic, with the population being counted at 4,300,000.
-Taxes are increased on the wealthiest landowners. Whilst annoying to them, the money is used for token public and social works. Basic schools, doctors, and orphanages are established to help provide some assistance to the poor.
-A trading ship from Sweden is illegally boarded by the Russian navy, and after one of the crewmen is accidentally killed, a Russian ambassador is beaten to death in a pub in Stockholm.
-Grants are given to help kick-start the construction of railways in the country, and several locomotives are imported from the Stevenson factory in England. One locomotive is also imported from Germany.
-Unemployed workers are hired to help assist the government in public works, helping to siphon up the agricultural workers being increasingly put out of work by machines.
-Work into aerodynamics is conducted, yielding favourable results for the construction of a novelty glider.

Thelurker1234 – The Russian Empire
Absolute Monarchy
-An alliance is formed with Kraków. An attempted alliance is made to the Americas, but is turned down. The Russian ambassadors speak openly of the dangers of the Baltic seperatists.
-The army is mobilised and brought into the Baltic area, along with a portion of the navy. Together they help to reduce smuggling and to crush attempted uprisings by rebels.
-An alliance is hoped for with China, but the Chinese are slightly hostile towards signing, seeing the Europeans with their increasing incursions as having a corrupting influence on China.
-Relations begin to improve with France after a series of talks are made between the two. The French are hoping to expand their influence into Asia and the Middle East.
-A secret police called the Okhrana is established, seeking to crush revolutionary activity in the Baltic and to punish forgers.
-Taxes and tariffs are changed in the Baltic area to hopefully encourage industrial development there. Soon enough a number of Russian and Belarussians are encouraged to settle there to make a living. The feudal system still holding strong in the Empire stifles much of this however, especially as people are tied to the land.
-Native language usage is permitted, and many see this as a concession on part of the Russians. Several newspapers and schools are established throughout the Baltic, Belarussia, Poland, Ukraine and Finland in order to encourage the adoption of national languages.
-The Russians lay claim to the rest of the steppes, with their claims starting to overlap rival khanates in the area. Similar claims are also advanced in Alaska.
-Work begins into fighting corruption within the bureaucracy, composed primarily of landed aristocrats. They seem hostile to change, and are rather slow and inefficient at their job.
-Work begins on a railway in St Petersburg, along with the paving of new roads throughout Russia to hopefully facilitate trade and movement of people and goods.
-Education reforms seem to be gradually bringing a tiny number of meritocratic people into the bureaucracy.
-A ship coming from Sweden is searched by the Russian authorities, and a crewmember is accidentally shot. A Russian ambassador is then beaten in a pub in Sweden by the crew’s old pals.
-Another ship, from Prussia is also searched and the local officer embezzles the gunpowder onboard. The ship owner complains to the Prussian embassy for a return of his goods.
-The nobility who dominate the Duma begin to push for greater control over the budget, mostly to help maintain their higher up positions in the army and their pensions.

MountainWatcher – Rattanakosin Kingdom
Absolute Monarchy
-A colony is established in Western Borneo, with some slaves bought to help work on establishment of agricultural activities, despite tutting by the British.
-A shipyard is established to begin construction of vessels for the navy, using the latest in European designs.
-An elite wing of the army, partially bodyguard of the Monarch, called the “Rattatas” is formed, used for mostly undercover and subterfuge actions.
-A trading treaty is signed with the Spanish, whom begin to enter Siamese ports and help further open up the area for international commerce.
-Rice is being heavily exported abroad to feed the hungry nations of Europe, which are starting to become more dependent on food imports. Guns flow back in the opposite direction.
-Land reforms are enacted, slowly taking over land and reorganising them for improved productivity, following a similar reorganisation to the Egyptians.
-Steam locomotives and rails are imported from Britain, with the development of railways starting in Thailand, initially starting with land surveys. Ports are also being expanded to accommodate the increasing intensity of shipping.
-Western medicines begin to be imported into the country along with medical textbooks and physicians.
-Nationalist sentiment begins to rise steadily, especially with the establishment of printing presses and newspapers for the educated classes.

Overpain – Baltic Seperatists
Political movement
-The party goes into further hiding, even setting up links abroad that are rumoured to be located in Germany and Scandinavia. One bunker is broken into and the ringleaders hanged in Estonia. The bunker is discovered to be full of British made rifles.
-A dead official is deposited at the front door of the city hall of Riga. On him is pinned a message that the Baltic peoples will revolt if they do not receive independence.
-Counterfeit money keeps appearing, although the authorities are quick to smash the mints and printing presses.
-A Romantic nationalism movement is underway, composed of poets and writers who seek freedom for their people. Some of the nobility loyal to the cause free their serfs, and begin to set up schools to help educate the common people.
-Camouflage is introduced, with armed supporters wearing cloaks and coats dyed in such a way so as to blend in with local environs. It is useful for movement in the daytime hours.

Zillamaster55 – Império do Brasil
Constitutional Monarchy
-Rifled muskets begin to be produced for use by the Brazilian army, starting with their adoption amongst skirmishing type troops.
-Foundries are established for the production of new artillery pieces, helping to supplement the firepower of the army.
-New frigates are commissioned for the navy, using the latest development in naval technology minus steam engines.
-The borders with Argentina are closed down after talks between the two nations are perceived to have failed, whilst the ambassadors in Portugal help to maintain close links with the old motherland.
-Land taxes are abolished throughout the Empire, the result of which is decreased revenue for the state to spend. On the upside, agriculture is expanding along with urban development, if rather haphazardly. Coffee is a popular item, its exports having quadrupled since 1830.
-Slavery is attempted to be abolished, but the bill is thrown out of parliament. The recent law against slave trading in Brazil was passed with difficulty, and a law against foreign slave trading has yet to be passed, although this garners some opposition too. Both the Liberal and Conservatives are divided rather deeply over the issue.
-Imperador Abraão, o Terceiro (Abraham III) is sworn in.
-Agricultural science books are imported from Europe, speaking on the merits of crop rotation, fertilizers, irrigation and other noteworthy improvements. Cotton can be grown with peanuts to improve yields of the former.

Chernobyl426 – Persia
Absolute monarchy
-Free trading agreements are offered freely by the dynasty, which the nations of Europe (France in particular) being all too keen to sign a free trade agreement and to begin investing into the country.
-The idea of industrialization is heavily boasted to an ambivalent audience. The French, arriving with various machines or ideas seem tolerable for the moment.
-A shipyard is established for the production of paddle steamers to help move goods along the rivers of the country. The steamers are French designed and built.
