Ok I'm here and I'm just about to start the next session. I might even get both up tonight depending on how it goes.

Bastard must've heard about our artifact. Well no matter, it shouldn't be too difficult to scare him off.

The kobold reaches our front stairs and is narrowly missed by a silver bolt which whizzes past his head. He is then quickly surrounded by Rigoth and Elon who unfortunately do not appear to have brought any weapons with them. As expected however our dwarves are much too slow for slippery kobold scum and so they are quickly left behind as it darts to safety. At least it didn't manage to take anything.

In the past couple of days a dwarf who could barely string together a sentence kept approaching me and explaining:
“Im ver' sorry bu' I cannawd build wall 'cos somefink in way”
Each time I replied that he should get the thing that is in the way out of the way and then continue with the construction as planned. After the third time I went up to the wall to find out what he was talking about and was met with a blank space in which a section of wall could easily be built (if wall building was something you knew how to do of course).
“Look nothing is there! This is where I want you to build the wall, alright?”
“Oh, ok den mr uhh sir”
Thinking it was dealt with I left to have a relaxing bottle of dwarven wine when lo and behold just as a pop the cork in comes Mr. Rock-For-A-Brain once again.
“Im ver' sorry bu' I cannawd build wall 'cos somefink in way”
In a fit I hauled the dwarf up to the wall and shouted at him to build it as I watched. So he stood where the wall was needed to be built and then started piling stones around him. When he tried to put stones where he was standing he stopped, thought for a while (you could almost see the cogs ever so slowly ticking in his, for lack of a better word, brain) and then turned to me and shrugged repeating the words:
“Im ver' sorry bu' I cannawd build wall 'cos somefink in way”
I think I'm going to need something stronger than wine.

These things should make some people happy, I just hope they don't get in the way. I'm starting to feel woozy looking at them now, I think I will have a lie down.
I went to sleep in my bed and woke up with two dead puppies in front of me
My alter ego has been at it again.

A quick walk through the fort shows me that he also set up some preliminary defences in the main entranceway:

7 cage traps now hang from the roof, ready to spring on any prospective intruders. At least my other personality is a bit more militarily minded than me. (Green ^'s are cage traps)

Dammit. An old rickety dwarf came up to me babbling about how the injured dwarf from the weresquirrel incident was “infected” and needed to be “cleansed” but I just assumed he was insane.
I order the military in and the weresquirrel quickly starts goring a nearby member of the militia. Our marksman soon starts peppering the ex-farmer but it is so blindingly fast that it still manages to deal some significant damage to Rigoth who soon dies. The marksman continues taking potshots and the squirrel starts to bleed badly. The militia commander forgot to bring ammo with him and so he just bashes the squirrel with his pine crossbow. After a while the maceman comes in and starts doing some serious damage with his copper mace. The squirrel starts focusing his attacks on the hunting dog. A wrestler dwarf comes out of nowhere and lands the final blow before the squirrel died due to blood loss.
Luckily(if you can call it luck) the only dwarf that was dealt damage by the squirrel is now dead so we won't have to deal with any infections.

More migrants arrived today. There is included in them a fairly skilled miner and mason which will be useful as well as another medical dwarf. Oh and of course More. Damn. Fisherdwarfs. The majority of the dwarves in this fort are at least partially skilled fishers and almost all of them request to have the title of Fisherdwarf. At least we will never run out of mussels.

19th Sandstone, Mid-Autumn, 252
I've decided to re-engage mining operations and dig around the caverns so we can get to some hopefully useful ores underneath it.

10th Timber, Late Autumn, 252
The wall that was started by my predecessor is finally completed!

The irregularities in the wall are mainly due to the issue I had with dwarves trying to build a wall while they were standing on the spot the wall needed to be built. They seemed to be perfectly able to waste our resources and build a few more walls just behind it. I'm not too sure yet what to do about a doorway(where the cat is in the picture) but I will probably settle on a bridge that will rise and create a wall when we need it to.
It has taken almost a year for us to get this thing done, I'm not sure whether that is a lazy effort on our dwarves part (highly likely) or because walls normally take that long to build but with all the effort that has gone in to it I hope it actually proves to be useful.
12th Timber, Late Autumn, 252
I have decided to go with the tried and tested drawbridge technique. The lever for it will be easily accessible in the dining room. There is another lever which controls a retractable bridge that covers the pit of doom. I assume this is for placing nobles on and then pulling the lever so they won't bother us.
I've also ordered some fortifications to be carved in to the walls so we can shoot through them and annoy any prospective siegers.

Excellent some quality merchants this time not the treehugging bastards. Perhaps our ragtag militia will become fully equipped, as long as our trader doesn't conveniently choose to go on break.
As the caravans ford the river, dwarves from the fortress swarm out bringing with them the various crafts that have been produced. Strangely a section of dwarves crowd around the caravan as well

I think they might be stealing from it. Well as long as it makes my life easier and those intimidating looking army dwarves don't start chopping off peoples hands I'm happy. Of course the broker uses this time to have a nice long relaxing drink. He should be trading soon though.
[editline]1st August 2012[/editline]
Ok that was tiring so I will get the final update done tomorrow or friday at the latest
Nice job with the werebeast
Just a mini-update because I need to study for a test tomorrow. Final report will be up tomorrow afternoon.
28th Timber, Late Autumn, 252

Just on the cusp of dreaded winter another kobold decides to try its hand at stealing from our fort.

He was spotted before he made it close to our gates and I quickly dispatched our militia.

A passing hunter spies the kobold and fires a shot, hitting it in the leg and causing it to fall prone. A perfect practice dummy for the fighterdwarves.
An unarmed military dwarf rushes to the kobold and knocks out his backteeth but then misses the next few hits and the kobold manages to slash at him with its small dagger but it hardly does any damage through his cloak. The kobold attempts another attack but is too weak to do any real damage. Another wrestling dwarf joins the fray and one holds the kobold down while the other crushes his face in. No casualties or injuries have been sustained. Our trader has arrived at the depot but we are still waiting for all our “trade goods” (read: piles of useless crap) to be hauled up to the trading area.
9th Moonstone, Early Winter, 252
I think the damn cold and rain that blurs the line between rain and hail is getting to some of our dwarves.

I just hope something productive comes out of it. Almost all the dwarves in our fort are still slowly removing all of the crafts from the place in to the trade depot which currently resembles a mountain of rubble. I think the caravan dwarves have used the crafts to build a sort of makeshift house to protect them from the rain.
A few moments later and I'm told that Edzul stared at Id our resident craftsdwarf in such a way that made Id go in to shock and then immediately set up a perimeter out of rope reed fibre cloth with a sign reading “Enter at own risk”. While not exactly pleasant he does seem to be making something in there although I presume it will be absolutely useless.
11th Moonstone, Early Winter, 252
The moment I am informed that all the crafts have been hauled to the depot I notice our broker walk in to her bedroom and instantly fall in to a deep sleep. She really has an uncanny knack for avoiding her job.
18th Moonstone, Early Winter, 252
Once again our trader left it to the last moment to strike a deal. We ended up with a whole bunch of leather which we can hopefully fashion in to some armor for our militia as well as weapons and a few helmets. Not the best of trades but it will do.
Why is the trade depot outside.
Why is the trade depot outside.
It'll be more Fun that way.
The external trade depot is probably due to the fact that the planning of a massacre chamber has not been started yet. Merchants give much better deals when the walls are strangely warm.
Why is the trade depot outside.
Yeah dogchow put it there, couldnt be bothered moving it :3
Make an airlock if you get a chance for the trade depot. It's nice to get some Human presents even if Goblin Christmas came early.
23rd Moonstone, Early Winter, 252

Our renewed mining efforts have uncovered another ominous cavern and still no truly useful ores.
I didn't think there was more to mining than just digging straight down and then becoming ludicrously rich off the proceeds but as it turns out there are several other factors involved in finding quality ores.
27th Moonstone, Early Winter, 252
The merchants have long gone but a liaison remains behind to examine what we've got and ask if there is anything we need.

I tell him some weapons and maybe some armour would be nice along with some steel for a metalworkers.
2nd Opal, Mid-Winter, 252
Ok I take it back, maybe mining is as easy as digging straight down and becoming ludicrously rich. Along with a whole bunch of new kinds of shiny gems our subterranean exploration force have uncovered this:

A massive gold deposit. This will make our useless shit even more useless and even more valuable at the same time. Incredible.
5th Opal, Mid-Winter, 252

The trade liaison assures me that our “rustic” and “simple yet elegant” bracelets (which I'm pretty sure were originally intended to be plates but an enraged dwarf punch a hole in the middle of all of them) will fetch quite a price when the merchants come round again. I won't even pretend to understand the working of this dwarfs mind but I'm definitely going to employ that angry dwarf as plate puncher full time from now on.
14th Opal, Mid-Winter, 252
After whining about leather for a long time I finally caved in and slaughtered our dingo for Edzul and his amazing creation which he set to work on soon after the dingo's hide was tanned.

I hope its worth it, I was almost starting to like that dingo. At least I still have the giant grasshopper.
18th Opal, Mid-Winter, 252

A scepter? A bit too royal for my liking, but it could have been worse.

I immediately have it valued and I'm impressed with the results although Edzul insists this “work of incredible beauty” must never leave the fort. The pit of despair is looking very tempting for this asshole I must say.

A crutch? He engraved his scepter with an image of a crutch? I will never understand art.
27th Opal, Mid-winter, 252
Apparently its fertility season because little babydwarfs are being born left and right.

1st Galena, Early Spring, 252

Spring, hard to comprehend it has been only a year since I first arrived at this place. Then I thought it was a nightmare, but now it seems more like a home. I seem to be slipping less and less in to my homocidal alter-ego, I think being so far from nobles for so long has been good for me.
A dwarf sidled up to me not one hour ago, sadness and pity painted on his face.
“What is it then? I am a busy man, we have a bucket shortage that needs seeing to immediately. Come on spit it out!”
“Sir, its uh... your grasshopper”
“Yes what about him? Has he been fed today, look you just take the plump helmet and divide it in to three equal sections then you-”
“No sir, its not that... He's dead”

I don't think I have cried so hard in my entire life. Rest in peace Hoppy McHopper, you were a true friend. With this recent trauma I do not believe I am fit to run the fort. I instructed some random passing dwarf to find someone else to run the fort. I'm just going to lie in my room and wait till people bring me food and ale, maybe I will engrave some pictures of Hoppy. No longer will I have to worry about buckets, inept builders, lazy brokers, werebeasts or nobles.
This Journal Has Been Published In Dedication To Hoppy McHopper, May His Soul Hop Eternally In Grasshopper Heaven.

Ok thats it for me. Its been very fun! But now its time to pass the baton. Hope you guys enjoyed it.
I liked your turn :)
Also, for those of you who are next, the traders next year want tools, IE wheelbarrows. Get some wooden wheelbarrows going and we'll be rolling in dwarfbucks next time the dwarf caravan comes by.
RIP Mr. Grasshopper, Rest in peace

Guess I'm up next...

I haven't been around all day, I'll get it right to you.
Almost done download the Fortress, damn my rural internet
SPRING REPORT
3rd Granite, 253, Early Spring
I have ordered the construction of a drawbridge at the main entrance to out great home. As such I had to remove the Traps the leader before me made, however I doubt they would have worked anyway.

In other news Olon went and got himself stung, I just hope he doesn't bother anyone about this.

4th Of Slate
One of the babies was murdered by a dingo, it never stood a chance. It shall be burried later, I believe the dingo was killed by one of our hunters.

I have ordered that we continue to dig down, for what good is a fortress that does not sprawl deep into the earth.

8th of Slate
I have ordered our military to take on the damned dingos that have been attacking our fortress, however considering their level of skill, I doubt anything good will come of this

After a few hits with her Crossbow, Adil finished off the dingo with one clean shot to the head with her battleaxe. I may have underestimated our military, perhaps they can hold their own.

11th of Slate
I often find my self wandering about my own thoughts, in this dream state I am gifted with visions of the future, or how I perceive it. I believe that the caverns below our fortress with prove useful in the coming years, more useful that any of use could have imagined.
20th of Slate
I have ordered that we breach the caves, they could prove useful in the case of a seige.

25th of Slate
Some migrants have arrived, hopefully their respective skills and abilities will prove useful in the future
They total 28 Dwarven men and women

We have also hit some sort of motherload of gems and metals, The caverns are full of them. It would be foolish to not exploit this new found wealth

8th Felsite
I have ordered the construction of a gem warehouse, it can be modified to fit other objects should future need be

Our Carpenter is also making wheelbarrels
15th Felsite
Libash Athelkon has been acting strangly as of late, muttering about something beautiful, some sort of masterful work of art floating about in his head. He may have finally lost it.

16th Felsite
Libash has "claimed" one of our craftsdwarf workstations, he claims he is making a work of art.

He keeps screaming something about, Plant cloth, metal bars, cut gems, bones and rock blocks.
18th Felsite
And now the damn elves are here, I really don't like them, but we need a few things, might as well trade off somethings that we don't need and such.

I am disapointed with whoever built the trade depot so far away from the fort.
24th Felsite
Damn Kobold theif tried to steal from us, the dog had other plans. It murdered the kobold, perhaps the dogs could serve as a replacement for real people in battle, ah one day maybe.

25th Felsite

So the damned Elves don't want to trade. I am going to rip them limb from limb, they will learn to respect the dwarven people

We will enjoy the spoils of war

Now that that's out of they way, am I doing these turns right. I tried to follow the pattern from the turns before this but I may have failed
Also, sorry for the artifacts in the text, my tileset messes with the words a bit
You forgot to do an "arrival" report where you explain the backstory of your dwarf and how he came to be in charge. If you write a backstory for your dwarf we can understand your motives and why you do the things you are doing more. Try and add something unique about your dwarf that allows you to do things you wouldn't normally decide to do but will make the game more interesting.
Otherwise I think its pretty good. Also, good work with the elves lol
Oh crap, Arrival Report. Working on it. I'll pop that one up before the next update
[editline]4th August 2012[/editline]
Arrival Report [sp]Did I do this right?[/sp]
Ever since I was but a little dwarfling, I’ve been different. There was always something that set me apart from them. Where they had friends, pets and loved ones, I had spike traps, vials of blood and detailed drawings of animal weak points. I can remember my first kill, it was beautiful. The trap I laid work perfectly, the spikes flew up from the ground severing limbs and crushing the skull, however the owner of the dog didn’t find the trap as beautiful as I did. I was put in a home for delinquents boys; it was there that I spent the next ten years, ten years to plot my revenge to the people that put me here, ten years to perfect the trap.
When I finally got out of that hell hole, I was ready. I made my way back through the crowded paths of Meinhammar, stalking my prey like a trained hunter. When they left the house, I set up the trap, a perfected version of the trap that killed their wretched rat they called a dog. It was perfect, once the door was opened, they wouldn’t have time to scream. I was waiting in the shadows when they got back, the spikes stabbed through the heart, piercing the lungs, ripping the flesh. I watched my work; it was perfect, everything working in union, like clockwork.
I had to leave; I spent the next few years wandering about the world, learning from various cultures, learning new traps, new ways to end life. I trained as a hunter, and I was damn good at it. If I wanted something dead, it died; I made a living off of it. People would hire me to solve problems, be it a rampaging animal, or an unwanted guest.
First of Granite
I stumbled upon a fortress today, everything was in disarray, and apparently the leader was gone. I saw this as an opportunity, a new place to perfect new traps, new death machines. I could convince the people here to trust me, it would take a while, I would have to play the leader, act normal. I would slowly build traps in the back ground, insidiously. Like a shadow that wisps out of sight once you notice it.
-Stigr
Looking good so far, looks like things are getting off to a good start. I need to update that damn OP.
We'll just ignore the logical plot hole of letting some wander psychopath run the fort. It's better that way
Psychopaths is always better
Are there still any free slots for this succsession fort?
Are there still any free slots for this succsession fort?
There's always free slots, I'll get you right on the list.
Next report is going to be delayed by a few days. been a bit busy
Any idea of when you'll return?
I have a friend at my house today, but I might be able to start on the update. If things get too busy I'll pass it along to the next person.
I feel as though I should reserve a slot, then again I feel A: I'm too new (like, 5-6 hours?) and B: I can't storytell that well.
I have a friend at my house today, but I might be able to start on the update. If things get too busy I'll pass it along to the next person.
It's alright if you pass it on, no worries.
I feel as though I should reserve a slot, then again I feel A: I'm too new (like, 5-6 hours?) and B: I can't storytell that well.
Let's wait till you're more experienced and get some writing skills. :zoid:
wish i reserved an early slot, im great at starting off forts but the military aspect just completely surpasses me
wish i reserved an early slot, im great at starting off forts but the military aspect just completely surpasses me
Not sure if you already read this, it helped me understand what to do, I can now build a functioning military
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.31:Military_quickstart
Also danger rooms. The survivors get nice bedrooms.
