Well moving into the caverns should spell quick disaster if a FB gets in.
Nah I got it covered
Can you get more details on the forgotten beast and goblin siege's by checking the reports or the game log? I would like to hear about what happened.
Many reports just say "No Recent Announcements". I guess I have already moved too far into Autumn to see them? Anyway I will get the Fall report up and look in the game logs later. [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline] MAXIMUM SPEED [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline] Fall Report: 25th of Limestone Mining Operations are going much faster than before. Dwarves keep blurring by at a speed I have barely seen them go before. It must be that glorious cavern air. A huge clearing is being made at level -43 for the foundations of a new fort. I have chosen an area next to the meeting of two lakes. The area is fertile, and many plants and trees have been cleared. There are still normal things that need to be solved: strawberry shortages, dumb hunters, troglodytes, and a lack of cages. I have the military taking care of those pesky troglodytes now. The hunters have been told to stop trying. Wait! Someone got taken by a mood again! Maybe this time it won't suck! More in part 2.
With it unlimited, what kind of FPS are you getting?
30 [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline] Fall Report: Part 2: 12th of Timber. The mood turned out to be something dumb again. Seriously! We have the worst artifacts ever. The sooner we cut off contact from the rest of the world, the better. Anyway, I canceled all hunting and switched to not farming strawberries anymore a- [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline] At the loss of one Axedwarf, the beast is slain with very little of a battle. Anyway, mining operations have eaten into the productivity of the Fortress, reducing the speed of the entire fortress significantly (FPS has gone to shit). Perhaps things will look up when the mining is done. I have already disabled all labors besides mining for the miners. We still need to get some cages though. Besides that and the Forgotten Beast that was so mangled it has no corpse, all I get are messages of new babies. Seriously. Fuck babies. [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline] A caravan from Kel Egstak has arrived. Time to get rid of all these useless crafts in exchange for weapons, armor, cages, and STRAWBERRY SEEDS. [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline] Broker is taking his damn time. Someone threw a party. [editline]23rd August 2012[/editline] And then the broker fell asleep
Dat broker again. Maybe at the end of your turn you can compile a military report that describes the fights more. They aren't that difficult to describe if you look in the game log because it describes the attacks pretty well.
10K Fps, I only get 600-900. I though my Computer was good.
Winter Report Incoming. Then I pack this thing up and send it along. What file sharing service should I use? [editline]25th August 2012[/editline] Winter Report: 7th of Moonstone, 254 It seems like forever since I have thought about my apparent mission with the kingdom. Should I really be working against these 181 hard working Dwarves? About a third of them are kids! That is about as many as in a third world country or something! I must help this Fortress. The best way to do that is to have them forsake the world that forsook them. We are digging down. Or would be, if these miners were not taking their damn time. I have canceled every digging order that does not involve creating a suitable starting platform for our new home. Less metals in the short term, unfortunately. I have gotten concerns about possible cave-ins, but all that does is show me which of the Dwarves are less ambitious and more risk-averse. They do not understand that digging a new Fortress with one already established further up allows us a lot of time. We can have SPACE. Imagine having a hallway that could be FOUR ASCII’s wide instead of THREE or TWO. IMAGINE THE SPACE WE COULD HAVE. Oh hey, the broker is finally trading our stuff. We traded all of our crafts for mining picks, cages, and various other things we needed. I bought some steel to make up for the lack of digging up resources. The trader was ecstatic with the trading. I hope our broker did not get us ripped off. And this happened: You probably know what I said to that (Hint, it was b). 13th of Moonstone, 254. Things would be getting boring if not for my excitement for the new Fortress! Only a bit more needs to be dug before we can start the first phase of the project: defenses. I have decided to honor my predecessor by planning a moat using the underground lakes as a source. Though not as powerful as a river, this should prove to be enough to provide decent defense, along with standard fortifications and a bridge. Nothing can possibly go wrong. Construction on the bridge started on the 21st of Moonstone. Winter is young. I still have time to at least START the moving process before somebody tries to stop me. Looks like the whole thing will be made out of Granite. The entire cavern is just littered with the stuff. 15th of Opal: The bridge is almost done, and will be used to make traveling between the lakes easier and less trafficky. My deep scale planning has been interrupted by petty concerns about “the worst smell of my entire existence” or something. It looks like we have a miasma problem. I have no idea what could have caused it, but I simply took the least happy people and assigned them mining labors, far from the noxious air. Most of the dwarves don’t seem too concerned about the smell. 27th of Opal: Construction has sorta started. I added some more coffins due to the few deaths that there have been. Someone asked me if he could entomb his precious dead pets. I told him to go bury himself in there. 11th of Obsidian: There is no chance of getting everything moved before the end of Winter. Perhaps I was too ambitious. I suppose it is time to make my own poorly scrawled notes for the next Overseer? Looks like there are a few things for the next guy to do: -Move everything down to the new Fortress -Design it with a ton of space, or else the effort was wasted. -Make a better military. -Figure out what is with the Miasma and where it is coming from. A few animals and one dwarf have so far died from it. My temporary solution has been to butcher all the useless animals. Moving to the new fort will allow for a better waste disposal system hopefully. And with that, the year is over, and I must retire to a life of leisurely Fishing and Fish Cleaning. Perhaps the Fisherdwarves can live close to the surface with the Broker, if we want to continue to trade and fish on the surface. I hope the engravers and smoothers do not take offence to moving the bedrooms down after all their hard work that I made them do…
Winter Report Incoming. Then I pack this thing up and send it along. What file sharing service should I use?
Any will do, any service you're comfortable with. I really need to update OP.

Okay, I take it back, this underground idea is very clever.
Got the file, I'm doing LD24 today so it'll be a day or so before next update. fingers crossed.
Also, look at the engravings and post the best ones.
I'll be back on Thursday, and probably need Friday to recover, so no rush.
I'm surprised that we managed to get a successful succession game running. Good work FP.
Nothing disastrous has happened yet. Hopefully digging a new and better fortress deeper underground will make us nigh invulnerable to surface sieges. We must reach Adamantine! We would still need to worry about digging down too far or Forgotten Beasts.
Gave a much needed update to the OP, I'll be working on the OP to make it more Dwarf Fortress style.
Thanks for running this Dogchow :) And for the fortress, who things we should invest in an underground lava moat? It would be pretty bad-ass if someone with experience with magma pumps got that going. If it's not done by my turn I will do it.

And about a lava moat, that would be quite dwarfy if we could dig down to a lava pool or the [sp]magma sea[/sp]. I don't have any experience with that stuff though, plus it would take a couple years to get it going most likely if it's that far down.
Yeah, the moat I started to dig has not been filled with anything yet. It can be filled with spikes if one wants to wait for lava to pump up.
I support the pumping of the magma sea to make a moat, but the main issue would be FPS lag whilst doing so. If we were to disable temperature for the period of pumping, then we could see about doing it, as temp calcs are a large part of why it is so CPU intensive. I've never really tried pump stacking anything past three or so pumps, but could try on my turn. (if my shitheap of a pc can manage it, we all can) After the moat is filled, the FPS should go back to near normal, I think.
Wow... love the pumping action. I think a magma/lava moat would be super cool! :D
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=72296.0 This is a design which improves FPS from pumping, I used it in my fortress and had no noticeable FPS loss. Pumping is much faster than letting magma free flow, so even if we just filled the moat once and dammed it in, we would have a moat full of magma for our little friends to fall into. Bonus points if you put weak traps on the rim of the lava so that enemies dodge into the moat and incinerate themselves.
Can't believe a siege hasn't been laid on the fort yet.
So... What's happening?
So... What's happening?
TM Gmod is supposed to be going right now, but he hasn't even started, I kind of knew this would happen after all the DF2012 thread regulars had gone. :smith: we still have Terminutter and Pokey though. I can't imagine how many people signed up just for the sake of doing so.
If he Never shows up I can take it. Might be a bit slower, I start grade ten on Tuesday
If he Never shows up I can take it. Might be a bit slower, I start grade ten on Tuesday
I've started school as well, I'm very busy with marching band and AP classes and the like. I try to keep track of this thread when I can though, because this is also my responsibility. We'll wait till the 10 day limit, I'll notify you both and you'll get the turn.
