Ok, so no economy mods.

Maybe you could use ores as currency? Coal is useful but plentiful so it would be worth the least, but diamonds would be worth the most. But shop keepers could agree to barter items for items. EX: 2 loafs of bread and a stone pick for 2 iron ingots?

Redstone and gold are good.

Any idea when the server will be up? Today, an hour from now?

Server goes up in about an hour, those with Beta privileges will get first access. Full server will open about 5 or so hours after that.
