You don't have to join the steam group in order to help out, you do however need to PM me in the correct way if you want to join early.

Just a note to you, 1.7 has a bug where signs, chests and furnaces get their contents wiped when a chunk unloads, it doesn't always happen but it's regular enough to make it really shit playing SMP at this point, which is why my survival server is offline.

This pluggin lets you drink water or milk. It also heals you and its configurable. You can edit how much heals you and whether milk OR water heal you.
