[editline]13th November 2011[/editline] Also, we have a page on the wiki.
I seem to have a squatter living in my garden. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/TabZr.png[/img_thumb]
I finished one of my several projects today  [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/GRR5X.png[/IMG_thumb] I got tired of seeing the giant swastika north of Cliffhaven, so I replaced it with something much more aesthetically pleasing :v:
Too bad Cliffhaven is a bloody ghost town now. :v:
Well at least now its a Confederate ghost town instead of a Nazi one :v: Also, my friendly skeleton disappeared
So are we getting spout on the server or not?
I just liked making it because I wanted to test the waters. To see who is interested and how the server is at this point. Call me crazy but it doesn't seem to be very lively right now. Is it because its so close to release? Theres also another thing, I don't like having to just move in to a pre-built building or lot. (unless the lot is a decent size) And most of the cities right now meet that pre-built description. I also don't like moving into a finished city. I think its nice when people can build their own farm and run it or their own food store or mine. I hate just occupying a place because it keeps my interest WAY less than would helping build a city from scratch with a few friends. When you restrict people's building space, then you restrict their creativity. Although you do prevent idiots from building giant wooden or cobble boxes. But thats just me, if people like moving into pre-built apartments or holes in the wall just for the sake of the creators making sure the whole city WILL look nice and matching, then be my guest, but thats not for me. Also, may I make an observation? I believe removing /spawn and/or /home backfired on us. I just can't help but feel like people are more isolated now than before. Didn't we remove those commands to promote teamwork and building close together? The way I see it is when somebody posts pictures of something interesting, I am reluctant to go check it out because of how far it is from my current place. And if I'm not totally bought on the idea of their settlement then I'll have to walk all the way back. And with the lack of food on the server it makes it hard to survive the journey unless you have a TON of melons, bread or killed all the animals within a few hundred blocks of your home. The railroad constructors can't keep up with the demand for newly built settlements which any ways, only has a few people. Now I agree if you want people to travel you should create a road or rail there but I think thats too much to ask forthe average minecraft player who doesn't create giant strip mines and has a few stacks of iron from it. Now teamwork would make that not a problem right? Well I guess that just doesn't work with most people's ideas unless their goal is clearly written out for them. (That is true in the business world, thats why managers need to make the employees visualize short term goals to meet long term goals) Keep in mind while judging my post that I was 100% for removing /spawn and /home before but in hindsight I think (from my perspective) its a bad idea. Example: On the last few maps there would be a large group of people talking about the current popular city, like Al Goth or your city, Profan. Even Lavasprings and Lakeside got some attention on the thread although not always for the best reasons... Here I notice Brim is posting a lot about Karkand and no doubt him and his friends at school got things down. And Crampture is getting some attention too. Although I see no reason to be excited to participate in a project or a town. And maybe the problem is that people just aren't posting on here as they used to. Thats debatable as well with everything else I'm saying. Those are just my thoughts. Please don't rip me a new one if you strongly disagree. I'll get it. I didn't expect this to turn into a wall of text...

I've got an idea.

What have I missed mod-wise on the server, I read something about Spoutcraft but far as I know that isn't in yet. What's this about engines and blast doors? The finite water isn't gonna stop me from a proper mob farm. I'll adapt. :P MC Mania doesn't seem to be working a whole lot either, Mine carts collect but don't put stuff info or take stuff out of chests. The cart dispensing doesn't work either unless all of these things are disabled for whatever reason.

The lots need to be way bigger for houses and instead of just making your house and living in that area for a bit before you move on, citizens of the city should be given community buildings to make as well like libraries, churches, shops, pubs etc. I know a lot of people on this server seem to have a leadership fetish which makes them want to own their own city but that could be remedied by giving some people their own districts of the city to manage. Kind of like how it's done in Karkand but on a much bigger scale, 50x50ish isn't big enough to call a district in my opinion. Essentially I want people to keep building their different towns, but instead of being thousands of blocks apart, build it next to another town and call it a city district.

I'll discuss some things with Dr.Cow today, maybe we'll turn Karkand into the Capital and have districts as smaller settlements in the surrounding land. For example, squids, you could build a mining district in the mountain range behind Karkand.
That doesn't really work for all types of cities, as most people who "take on" a project to do community stuff sometimes just dissapear and half the city is empty.
You could always just pass the project on for someone else to finish if the person is inactive for too long. To be honest, for this sort of thing to work properly, you would have to be involved. Most of the time when you start a city half the server moves to it but they just end up mining or digging a subway because there isn't much else to do when they have built their house.

[editline]15th November 2011[/editline] It might even be possible to get it large enough to need a small subway system to get district to district quickly.

Maybe a large city building event would get a few more people playing if it was properly organised.
People will always get bored and start something new. The trick would be to make them start the new project right next to the old one, instead of 100Km away. The problem is that things will still get abandoned, it will just be a vast ghost town with a couple of occupied buildings on the ever-expanding edge.

Atleast with this idea the people who abandon their old project to build something new will only be down the road from the people they leave behind. [editline]15th November 2011[/editline] You could always add a load of NPCs to wander around cities to sort of emulate population.
If people are making cities into districts, then I shall turn Zhidgrad into a giant collective farm.
If people are making cities into districts, then I shall turn Zhidgrad into a giant collective farm.
It doesn't really work if your town is miles from wherever the city center is.
It doesn't really work if your town is miles from wherever the city center is.
Karkand is accessible by boat from my place.
Karkand is accessible by boat from my place.
Protip: Subway :v: [editline]15th November 2011[/editline] Votes for spoutcraft(read sproutcat) have so far been overwhelming, 92 % have said yes. Putting it on the server, doesn't have proper block api support yet though, but soon! [editline]15th November 2011[/editline] Also ramalayha is considering making us nether ores! Any suggestions for names of ores and what properties they should have are welcome! As well as what items you would be able to produce from them
Some kind of red diamond would fit. No idea what it would do though.
Some kind of red diamond would fit. No idea what it would do though.
Rama was considering "Pyrium" which would let you make fire arrows.
Rama was considering "Pyrium" which would let you make fire arrows.
That would be cool. Could it be made so that they emit light like a torch when they hit a wall?
Oh we were also talking about making something like a lantern that would be fueled by soulsand. When the lantern has no "fuel" it would emit a faint light blue light, and when it's "extracting" souls it would emit a strong red light
Can you change it so soulsand is a bit more dangerous? Like have it so you can sink all the way through and drown in it.
Alright, Squids, plan how you would want to do an underground mountain district. Zhitgrad people, do whatever you want to :v: I'll start preparing materials, the first step in forming a "nation" of city-districts is going to be to build a wall around q large area. I'll plan a design. I won't be on much tonight, but think about this if you want to participate. A large setting like this has never been done before as far as I know, we're going to need a lot of people and a lot of collaboration.
This could be handy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_elements,_materials,_isotopes_and_atomic_particles :v: I'd like to see Cavorite, which could be used to make gravity resistant armor. Maybe it reduces falling damage or increases jump height.
