The connection on .net is really awful for most people. .us never lags, but it's usually empty. It's really quite a predicament to choose which server to play on.

If you were tunneling directly below the first layer of bedrock at the top of the map you will occasionally lag outside of it. Go 2 blocks down, then it won't happen.
Happened to me, but thankfully I had cheats and instant break and was able to break the bedrock and a netherrack underneath it and ninja place a chest box directly under the bedrock before it reappeared, placed a shitton of diamonds and iron I had in the chest box, killed myself, and then went back and dug it out. I got extremely lucky that there was only 1 layer of bedrock there, the rest being netherrack.

Oh I've made it now :v: Now I live with Magaa and Kaameron on an island, we have an abandoned mine and a dickload of ravines.
I've never bothered with this server before, until tonight when my friend asked if I wanted to check it out with him. I have to say it's the most fun I've had on any server so far.
I don't think it'd be so fun without hunger though.

the start is a pain but when u get in a bit longer and get some nice supplies weapons food and stuff

No when it's a maze of a base and there are lots of chests in different rooms, I often miss some, so I can mix them up if I don't smash them.
