Yup, it seems the server is having difficulty as I cannot log on, either.
To answer Simple's question about finding food near spawn-- you can pickup the zombie flesh after they burn away in the morning. Eat as much of it at one time as you can find, and it will fill your hunger bar. You can also use bones to make bonemeal to grow wheat, but its probably most difficult to find the seeds near spawn. The -z direction does appear to be a good choice. Good luck!

Told him to run chunkster on it, it'll fix the NPC issues but it could take a while if he chooses to do it.
Personally I think the world should just be remade.

Make it another night. It wasn't that easy to fix it, although it's backed up now and has to go through some serious patchwork. It will most likely be back tomorrow in good shape.
