Well was, now its not letting me connect.
When I first joined, I didn't know if the spawn area was a missing chunk or what.
Then me and some dude partnered up and were trying to survive, taking shelter in old half destroyed buildings and shit. Was quite fun.
I remember when I first started out, I found an old town near spawn, I think it belonged to Facepunch but I'm not sure. I placed a sign saying "RIP" when all of a sudden, a suit-wearing zombie walked up to me. I almost fell out of my chair, then realized it was a player, named Boccka. We spoke a bit and then I left.
I found someone's old mine and collected a large amount of iron and diamonds. I had invited my friend, HK_Knight_Hawk, to join me, and I put some ore in a furnace as I waited. I forgot that I was very close to spawn, and when I saw a player rushing up to me, I once again got shocked, but I saw it was my friend. We made ourselves some armour and weapons and started to walk out.
We passed the old town, and it was sunset. To my surprise, I saw Boccka again, and the three of us walked together for a short while, until it became night. We placed some furnaces and began cooking pork, fighting off the monsters while protecting our small camp. In the morning, we packed up and continued on our journey, but Boccka disconnected as we travelled, and we never saw of him again.
Not too far from spawn, we made a small underwater home, which was fairly well-hidden. I gave my valuable items to HK_Knight_Hawk, as he very rarely visited the server. When I next rejoined, I was on my laggy laptop, and I spawned inside the water entrance (he had renovated the base slightly). I couldn't move because the laptop was too slow, so I disconnected instead. The week after, I rejoined to find myself drowned, but luckily, I had given my diamonds and other rare items to my friend. I walked far away and eventually created where I live today, Fort Eden, and I hope that one day we will meet again, so he may return my treasure and we can work on this base together.
I'm not dead even once yet...

Use a nether portal, or make one yourself using 14 (or 10 for economy-version) Obsidian blocks.
However, be careful in the nether. Ghasts are always out to kill you, there's tons of lava everywhere and few places to walk on, and unless you're flying or using someone else's left over path you're not going to get very far.

Is it like the spawn? (Completely destroyed)

Nether is just super fast travel with lava everywhere.
though iirc, last time it was huge towers of portals where they got unlit by ghasts.

Not really, there's tons of stacked portals though.
However, I haven't been in the main spawn portal for a while.
When I died, the portal was deactivated and I didn't have the ability to re-light it.
