I could do with some tips on finding bases because me and my group are finding it pretty difficult.
Yesterday we managed to complete our main base way out and gather a stack of tnt. We went back through the nether towards spawn looking for portals on the way back finding nothing other than a tunnel with a portal leading to a nether rack hut. The highlight of the day was teasing people at spawn by throwing diamond on the floor in front of them and killing them when they went for it.
We ended up at our first base seeing how raided it was and leaving some nice loot and then killing ourselves to get back.
So what's the fastest way of navigating the nether for long lengths and finding bases?

Xray.
X-ray of either texture packs or mods. I like using a combo if REALLY necessary.
Making a tunnel system (or even better, someone elses) to navigate the nether is much better.

Floor. Tunnels at the roof are just asking to be stuck on top of the bedrock.
