That's what I've been doing, but there is no way to automate it as far as I know.
The best you can do it get a lot of people helping. I have yet to recruit anyone though.

Poured lava all over a portal that I was stupid enough to use. I tried blocking out the lava but that didn't work, and it wouldn't let me re-enter the portal to escape.

Theres a mod that automines and auto walks so maybe a really long band of obsidian could be minned with it AFK.
I'm using that mod and leaving my computer and seeing how far I get in the nether :v:
Even when my pickaxe breaks I could still get pretty far.

Well I would think the server would be able to handle a fairly large amount of items, that was only about 2 stacks. But I don't know the specs or anything about how much it could handle if I did.

It's Minecraft. It's not so much about the hardware of the server, it's how shitty Minecraft is coded. The software can't handle it.
