I never get decent (50ms~) ping though, and here's why:
Most people have a modem hard-wired either to a cable or fiber-optic connection.
Not me, I live out in the stix so I have wireless internet. Not a wireless NETWORK, but the MODEM is a cancer-inducing little black box that communicates with a radio tower 4~ milles away. The first one of these bastards I got had a big-ass orange sticker on it that said "WARNING: KEEP AT LEAST 8 INCHES AWAY FROM PEOPLE".

Basically thats the only way. You could try using an x-ray mod or texture pack to try to find RARE gaps in the bedrock, but its much harder to find than gaps in the over-world which is hard enough.
