Project Spearhead RP: Humanity's last stand against a relentless invader...

Aida looked at her comrades with uninterested stare before following along into the building, eager to leave this little GJ Joe clubhouse behind. This boredom was going to kill her faster than lung cancer at this rate she thought as she took another out smoke from as she entered the dulled and grey interior of the building, there was nothing of interest to her as the commanders begun to drone about how there going to unveil some overcomplicated plan that will surely fall apart within the first seconds of an actually engagement with the Crystalites. Like it always does but still, Aida is always looking to burn some more.
Nevertheless, Aida follow the charade and leaned onto an wall of briefing room, conveniently blocking the no smoking sign with her torso as she watched over the rest of the squadies in room.
Vasil sat down on his seat. His curiosity got the better of him and he started looking through the tablet. He put it down when he heard Karl's question however. "I believe the answer is quite grim, comrade. Those bugs feed on energy. Dropping a nuke on them would probably be like shoving a steak down an anthill."
"You will be given all the answers soon, after the briefing." Said Deveraux as he arranged some papers infront of him. He glanced towards Aida.
"Miss, I'd appreciate if you could sit down at your designated seat. Please try not to start the fire suppression system." He finished the sentence with a friendly smile.
Aida stumped down a bit on the wall, letting an chuckle at this Tech's reasoning. Taking the cigarette from her mouth and looked towards him while blowing out a puff of grey smoke into the surrounding air.
"If they could absorb energy that damn fast than why do they always scream and panic when ya light em up with the good old napalm? Fire and other explosions seem to make em dead real quick regardless and that's mostly energy right? Through fire is most fun of course. Plus it makes the soft bits real tender." Aida said in deep and clam tone to rest of team before resuming her smoke.
She raised her head towards Deveraux, the commanding officer of this whole operation as he told her put out the cigarette and to take an seat.
Aida gave an simple nod towards him and pick herself up from the walk, dropping the cigarette before giving it an quick stomp. She then walked towards the line up of chairs, choosing to sit besides Donovan. An face that Aida faintly remembers appearing in an American news paper for some surely heroic feat.
Despite lacking any kind pubic recognition or applause for 14 long years of continued service in the fleeing military of the middle east. Aida simply didn't care about it, feelings petty jealousy or anger were absent from her mind.
Choosing to focus on the delightful feeling of slinging an gallon of napalm onto an incoming wave instead as she casually pulled up an chair and turned it around. Seating in it backwards with her arms crossed in wait for next line orders to be bark out by the brass.
William eyed the pyromaniac with an expression equal parts annoyed and amused. The slight terrified shift in his seat was entirely involuntary. "Per'aps if we listen to the general we will 'ave our questions answered," he said, not without a degree of irritation. He leaned back in the chair and punctuated his statement with a collective glower - lingering for a moment longer on Aida - before picking up his tablet and flicking through it idly.
Nick snickered at the pleasant sight of the pyro. 'Oh boy, we got gramps hick and pyro girl, great.' He thought. Nick rolled his eyes as he squinted.
Joyce looked over all the characters in the room, giving them all a quick evaluation.
Not intending to make any friends on this trip, she'd rather just know how everyone functioned.
"Now that Ms . Firebug has been sat down, can we get on with the debriefing, general? I'm here on a payroll and I my job is not to sit around listening to a walking boiler crack jokes." she said, pouring herself a glass of water from her canteen.
Eric sighed. "This is a mess."
" Oh I don't know!" Zachary replied when he heard Eric. " I'm liking this already!"
Suddenly the second set of doors opened, in came Lt. Maj. Hayes with his right hand alongside four colonels, two men and two women. The two officers remained next to the doors while the colonels sat down in the remaining chairs on both side of Deveraux.
"These are colonels Xiao and Martinez-" said Deveraux to which both female colonels nodded towards the Spearhead squads "- and these are colonels Cross and Rymäki." The two male colonels nodded.
"Now, without further due, let's begin. Keep in mind that the moment you signed up for this you agreed to keep everything you see, hear and touch here confidential."
The general looked at Hayes. "Lights." Hayes nodded and shut off the lights in the room, creating a near-alien ambience as the only source of light was the blue hologram of Earth.
"I'd like to welcome you all once more Project Spearhead." Began the general. "When I was ordered to oversee this project three years ago it looked helluva' different."
"Now, to the mission at hand."
The hologram suddenly zoomed in to a region in former Central Africa. The view changed to plain with a crate at the center. At the center of the crater was a massive crystal- UCO-1. Around the crater was a partially destroyed wall and buildings positioned alongside it, all of which were in poor conditions.
"Unidentified Crystal Object One. A gamechanger. The object which forced us to fight for the survival of our very species."
The hologram zoomed in further on the crystal. "Seventeen years ago this crystal- this curse- came to our planet. Ever since it has only caused death. Your target is this crystal. As we tried method after method with no viable result, the UEA formed Project Spearhead.
As you all know, this project consists of humanity's greatest from all around the globe, each member of this porject is either the best or one of the best in their respective fields.
You have all been handpicked for this mission. Your squads are structured in the way to create near-perfect team balance because without any coordination we might as well give this mission to a band of wasteland looters."
He paused as the hologram changed into a animated Crystalite.
"As said, we have tried many ways to rid our planet of these creatures. One of the very first things we tried was to empty half of Earths' nuclear arsenal right ontop of the crystal. No warhead reached its target. Why? Because the crystal has formed a magnetic field so strong it rips apart any incoming projectiles down into molecules.
The source of this magnetic field is unknown, all we know is that it has a direct link to the crystal and that it encapsules the entire crater. Despite the odds we did find a way; a gate into the crater."
Once again the hologram transformed to showcase a large cube-shaped building connected to the crater. Two gates were highlighted, one leading into the crater and one leading into the wasteland.
"This particular building- the gatehouse- was used to ferry samples and equipment back and forth between the GERU research base and the crater. It is the ticket to your objective."
"Your main objective is to get to this gatehouse, breach it and deliver- as some of you already know- a highly experimental explosive device into the crystal. We know for a fact that there's several large openings into the crystal which are big enough to fit the device.
The only problem is that you'll have to fight your way to it. It won't be easy, but then again none of you signed up for a walk in the park, however I, we, are confident in your ability to succeed."
As the general finished the hologram changed and began showcasing a plethora of weapons and equipment. "At your disposal you'll have the best Humanity has to offer, if you can carry it you'll have it."
"The plan is in short to deploy into the africa continent and head towards the crystal, as harsh as it may sound we do not expect all of you to get there in one piece. Make no mistake people, this could very well be a one-way ticket. As such we've divided you into five squads, each squad will land in different locations. Each squad will have a explosive device with them.
Optimal mission outcome would be a scenario where all squads rendevouz at the gatehouse for maximum effect on target."
The lights came on and the hologram shut down.
"Each squad will be given mission-specific equipment crucial for the mission success. This includes two UEA Gazelle LRV, a personalized set of the Spearhead AUAS for each squad member, a specialized communications package with a link to the UEA sattelite grid as well as any weapons of your liking. All squad leaders will be given a AI construct for help with in-field analysis.
These are the following AI's: Rasputin- Spearhead Five, Eagle- Spearhead Four, Patton- Spearhead Three, Killjoy- Spearhead Two and finally, Merlin for Spearhead One.
Each Spearhead squad member will also be given a UEA military tablet for gathering intel in the field. These tablets are universal and in use by all of UEA, meaning that if you come across a intact storage device of any kind you will be able to connect to it and retreive any information which could help the UEA."
Deveraux pointed at the tablets infront of each Spearhead member. "Each tablet also comes pre-loaded with mission specific intel, such as information about the Crystalites, a personnel dossier, a equipment dossier, noteable events and a unique file about each squad AI.
He sighed deeply. "It took us years to plan this right and prepare everything for you. Let's hope that this really is it."
Deveraux looked up. "Questions?"
"Hell yeah I do!" Zachary exclaimed. "Can we kill stuff now?"
Joyce leaned on the table "I'd like to get some specifics on the payload".
Hayes grunted as Zachary once again showed a enthusiasm for killing crystalites. "Easy, rookie."
Deveraux on the other hand ignored the comment and looked at Joyce. "It's a heavy-duty device comprised of three inactive nuclear warheads, a pulse generator and vaccum stabilizer. It all runs on several low-yield batteries with a months lifetime. Untill you reach the crystal the bomb will remained turned off and safely secured in the back of each squad's secondary Gazelle. There's more info on it inside the equipment dossier."
Ford, Spearhead Three's squad leader suddenly spoke. "Sir, I read the section about the bomb however I don't understand how we're going to activate it because judging by the dossier everything in the imminent area will cease to exist once it's on?"
Deveraux nodded. "That's where your AI's come in; the bombs will remain inactive and turned off untill a AI chip is plugged in, after that you have twentyfive minutes to leg it back to your vehicles and get the hell out of there."
Joyce looked through the dossier to asses the equipment, then looked to the general.
"Given that a 250 megaton explosion has a 250 meter disintegration radius, with a safezone being at least 5 kilometers away.
So, depending on the location we place the payload, to the landscapes surroundin that area and the crystallite resistance, there's a whole lotta ifs for this to be a succesfull operation..
Tellin us some of us might not make it back is just shugacoatin' a pile o' shit."
Deveraux sighed. "Miss, this is all we have. We can't spare any larger amounts of forces to deploy, our defenisve lines would crumble plus the Crystalites would sense a larger force. We can't bomb it either. This is literally the only plan we have that has a remote chance of working."
He looked at each and every face. "In five years they Crystlites will have superiority in numbers. They'd break through our lines and slaughter us like cattle. In ten years the entire plan will be covered in hives.
You know what you signed up for, to give humanity a future. You don't accomplish such a feat without any form of sacrifice. We created the AI's to make sure that nobody has to stay behind, twentyfive minutes is what you all have to leg it and grab some cover."
Donovan just sits in his seat silently and begins thumbing through the information on the tablets.
Chuck, who had been unnoticed by everyone until now, suddenly spoke up. "Yes, I have a question," He said, with a thick, gravelly voice. "When do I start making the food?"
"Mmm, ration packs with a dash of salt."
The general turned his gaze towards the quartermaster. "You'll be given several transportation bags, each filled with MRE's, extra food ingredients and spare parts for the squad's weapons and equipment."
"I have to ask the other important question. When do we start?"
Deveraux smiled and rose up from his chair. "Now that's the spirit! Hayes, escort the squads to the armory and then to their designated bareacks."
The Lt. Major nodded and opened the second set of doors. "Let's go, rookies."
So Hayes, what are we looking at for air support, or are we running this shitshow rambo? says Selous with a slighty suicidal smirk.
William had gone deathly pale after the briefing. He had expected to be in danger, even to die, but now the threat was real. He shuffled along the corridor trying to look unperturbed, avoiding eye contact with his colleagues and his commanders. Eventually, he caught the eye of the nearest soldier and whispered, "are you ready for this?"
[Question, are you guys still accepting player applications? Also, does the combat engineer actually do engineering? What about electrical/computer engineering, or does that fall more under the combat technician?]
"Not in the slightest," Whispered Chuck. "The most engaging combat scenario I've been in was when I had to kill a rat with a plastic knife."
"Oh Ah'm more than just ready. " Zachary smirked. " Ah'm ready to unleash hell on those crystal fucks."

[Untill we start nearing the crystal it's not too late to join. Technical stuff falls under combat tech.]

[sounds interesting, if I got the time I'll join later today/tomorrow]
Hayes looked at Felix as he continued to lead the five squads through a series of corridors. "There will be limited air support after you've touched down. We plan to give you covering fire as you hit the LZ however the deeper you travel into Africa the harder it will be to deploy any aircraft without the risk having it shut down due to magnetic disturbances."
He swiped his keycard at a door. Above it was a sign which said 'ARMORY' in black bold letters.
The door silently opened up and revealed a massive room sprawling with activity.
Among the dozens of weapon racks were numerous soldiers and technicians minding their own business. Sparks flew as a pair of workers repaired an exosuit while the muffled sound of gunfire could be heard as several geared up special forces soldiers tried out some silenced weapons at the gunrange at the far side of the room.
Hayes turned to the Spearhead squads with a big grin on his face. "Welcome to the armory, my favorite room on this base. As you are all Spearhead members you are allowed to recquisition anything from this room as long as you can carry it without it hindering your ability to move.
This includes primaries, sidearms, explosive weapons, equipment, tactical devices and special weapons."
He pointed towards a small walled off area to the left. "Each squad leader and comms officer are to report to the Cube for special equipment distribution." He then pointed towards a large glass box monitored by some uniformed officers. "All combat engineers are to report to the glasshouse for detailed briefing regarding the mission payload."
He smiled. "Get to work, rookies."
Rubbing his palms together like a kid in a candy store, Sundowner smirked.
"Ohhohohohoho! Come to daddy!" He exclaimed as he laid eyes upon a pair of prototype high frequency blades which he gave the name 'Bloodlust' immediately.

Test swinging the two massive blades with style, he found himself very satisfied with how the two swords moved.
"Hey Mister!" He yelled to Hayes. "Ah like to make a special request!"
