My responses will be essentially me posing as an intelligence official or cabinet member or what-have-you in your nation's government so that means the information given to you COULD be incorrect based upon your nation's competence as well as weighted but randomized dice rolls. The information given will largely be at least mostly correct and can give you at least a basic idea of events that are upcoming. It can be a very useful tool to ensuring the safety of your nation.
Also, I highly suggest everyone joins the FPRP group on Steam, I'd like to get UN chats going after each turn. https://steamcommunity.com/groups/FaRPG [editline]1st March 2016[/editline] rip merge

He is posthumously given the name Emperor Shōwa. His eldest son, Akihito succeeds him. George H. W. Bush succeeds Ronald Reagan as the 41st President of the United States. February: The Soviet Union begins withdrawal from Afghanistan. A military coup overthrows Alfredo Stroessner, dictator of Paraguay since 1954. After 44 years, the Estonian flag flies again over Pikk Hermann tower in Tallinn. March: Time Inc. and Warner Communications announce a merger. Time Warner is born. The first contested elections for the Soviet parliament result in losses for the Communist Party. Chechnya, Abkhazia, Ossetia and Dagestan are all elevated to the status of Soviet Republics. April: The Hillsborough disaster, one of the biggest tragedies in European football, claims the life of 96 Liverpool supporters. The Tiananmen Square protest begins following the death of Hu Yaobang. 100,000 Chinese students march into Tiananmen Square demanding a restoration of Hu’s image. This quickly escalates to demands of democratic reform. Surprisingly the Chinese government agrees to these demands. Surprised but elated, the Chinese students go home. Israel approves the use of all military resources to end the Intifada. Noboru Takeshita resigns as Prime Minister of Japan in the wake of a stock-trading scandal. Japan officially apologizes for their war crimes committed in World War 2, including the Rape of Nanking and the use of “comfort girls” in Korea. This action surprises everyone. May: Andrés Rodríguez, who had seized power and declared himself President of Paraguay during a military coup in February, wins a landslide election in a general election marked by charges of fraud. The Gaza City Massacre occurs. A crowd of Palestinian protesters surround an Israeli patrol. The patrol opens fire and kills 63 Palestinians before the crowd disperses. One Israeli is killed and two are injured. The first crack in the Iron Curtain: Hungary dismantles 150 miles (240 km) of barbed wire fencing along the border with Austria. Mikhail Gorbachev visits China, the first Soviet leader to do so since Nikita Khrushchev in the 1960s. A Chinese military coup is attempted. It fails before Chairman Deng can be reached. 24 men are executed. The general who led the coup is sentenced to death by immurement. He is trapped in a small box with a hole for his head and placed in the middle of nowhere where he will either die of starvation of dehydration. Carlos Menem wins the Argentine presidential election. Ciriaco De Mita resigns as Prime Minister of Italy. Tensions rise in Korea as both nations’ armies mobilize. Amid food riots and looting set off by inflation, the Government of Argentina declares a nationwide state of siege. Kim Il-Sung dies. North Korea blames Chinese treachery but nobody is truly certain it was even a murder. Kim Jong-Il succeeds Il-Sung. He states that the Chinese attempted to assassinate him as well. He rails against the betrayal and treachery of the Chinese and announces his intentions of unifying Korea, destroying China, and destroying the United States. The Soviet Union opens its borders to the West. Open travel is now possible. The world breathes a collective sigh of relief as it appears the Cold War is truly ending. June: Sōsuke Uno succeeds Noboru Takeshita as Prime Minister of Japan. Fighting breaks out in the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic between ethnic Uzbeks and the Turkish minority; more than 100 people are killed by June 15. The Soviet Union and China both renounce their support of Pyongyang. South Korean agents are captured and executed in North Korea on June 27th. The wreck of the German battleship Bismarck, which was sunk in 1941, is located 600 miles (970 km) west of Brest, France. Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, and Jordan send an ultimatum to Israel: Cease military actions against Palestine or face war. Republic of India - Native Hunter Military: Large/Inexperienced/Outdated Economy: Stable (Stagnant) Unity: Low (Stable) - Money begins flooding into the defense sector as India looks to modernize their military and establish themselves as a world power. Pakistan takes note of this and increases its own military funding. - Military training in mountains, jungles, and deserts becomes the norm as the Indian military looks to build a hardy, disciplined military. - The Parliament of India passes legislation to ensure the protection of the rights of workers. Large fines can be imposed on businesses that breach this law. The populace heralds this as a great step forward in the rights of the people. - India is plagued by pollution. Human refuse lines the streets and pollutes the rivers. Dysentery affects untold numbers of Indians and even tourists every year. As such, the government has seen fit to create the Indian Sanitation Bureau, tasked with the cleanup of all of India. This is a monumental task that will take years to accomplish but this is an important first step in combating a tremendous problem in the country. - Construction of resorts and museums increases, the government has places a special focus on the tourist industry it seems. The rich history of India is to be shared with the world. - Parliament fails to pass a bill that would give tax breaks to banks who help to create small businesses. Parliament members cite the potential for banks to take unfair advantage of this law. - Parliament also fails to pass a bill that would increase the education budget significantly. The massive project would have attempted to ensure that every child lived within 10 miles of a school. The lack of government funds kept this bill from passing. - India begins an infrastructural program to alleviate the problem of overpacked railcars. New railroads begin construction and railcars are built. The project is predicted to be completed by summer of 1994. - Envoys are sent to all neighbors, hoping to improve relations and establish or increase trade. Sri Lanka refuses the envoys outright and demands that India remove its forces from Sri Lanka. Pakistan receives the diplomats but talks don’t go very far before the Pakistani diplomats demand an explanation for the increase in Indian military focus. Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal all happily begin discussing more open trade. Subsidies are granted to private sector researchers who are focusing on green energy, wind and solar especially. Japan - MountainWatcher Military: Small/Inexperienced/Modern Economy: Strong (Improving) Unity: High (Improving) - The Diet rejects the notion of an increase in the size and scale of the Japanese navy citing Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution which bans the nation from building armed forces with war potential. - The Diet does, however, pass bills subsidizing private businesses in the nuclear research field and the computer science field with an aim of increasing Japanese use of nuclear energy and developing more efficient processors (among other things) for computers. Already gains are being seen in the computer science field. It will, however, take some considerable time for the effects of the nuclear science investment to be seen. - The Japanese government officially apologizes for the war crimes it committed in World War 2. This includes apologies for the Rape of Nanking as well as the use of “comfort girls” in Korea. This move shocks nations around the world as this move completely goes against the culture of “saving face”. South Korea and China commend Japan for their acknowledgement and apology of the events. North Korea pouts because they’re North Korea. Democratic People’s Republic of Korea - Zillamaster55 Military: Average/Inexperienced/Slightly Outdated Economy: Crippled (Declining) Unity: Ecstatic (Stable) - Satellite images show massive troop compositions close to the DMZ. - Air and ground exercises are announced and carried out in May. - The DPRK releases an official statement denouncing the “false government of the Republic of Korea” and demanding that Seoul release its territories to the DPRK. Seoul responds with a simple “no”. - North Korean artillery fire into South Korean territorial waters as a display of strength. South Korea responds in kind. - South Korean agents are captured in North Korea, their mission is unknown. They are executed publicly. - China and the Soviet Union renounce all support of Pyongyang. All economic and military support is cut off. The lack of food imports causes a famine in the struggling country. The government’s rhetoric against the world only increases. Korea is a powder keg and two fires have been lit right next to it. Republic of Korea - SniperComZero Military: Above Average/Inexperienced/Modern Economy: Strong (Declining) Unity: Stable (Increasing) - In response to North Korean threats, the ROK decides to increase military presence at the DMZ. Heavy vehicle patrols take place starting on May 18th. Mines, barbed wire, tank traps, and other obstacles are placed throughout the more rural areas of the DMZ. The military is placed on high alert and is prepared for a potential invasion. - A number of random attacks by lone gunmen occur in cities throughout South Korea during April-June. Naturally fingers are pointed at North Korea despite there being no evidence of this. - Evacuation drills take place throughout the northern cities that are at risk of North Korean bombardment. - North Korean artillery fire into South Korean territorial waters. as a display of strength. South Korea responds in kind. - North Korea demands that South Korea relinquish its territory. South Korea responds with “no”. - Official foreign policy as per SniperComZero “hhhhhh”. - South Korean agents are caught in North Korea, their mission unknown. They are publicly executed for “treason”. North Korea may very well declare this an act of war. - The South Korean populace is scared but ready and determined to win in a potential war against their brothers to the north. Democratic Republic of China - asantos3 Military: Massive/Inexperienced/Outdated Economy: Stable (Stagnating) Unity: Low (Declining) - Protests erupt in Tiananmen Square following the death of Hu Yaobang. 100,000 civilians march on Tiananmen Square and demand democratic reform. Much to their surprise and the surprise of the world, the Chinese government yields to these demands - The Chinese government lays out a plan to create a representative democracy with a constitution and a separation of powers. -The government announces plans for a mixed economy with "strategic state owned non-monopoly public goods". -The flag is changed from that of the Red Star to that of the Green Flower -The official government name is changed to that of the Democratic Republic of China. -The national anthem is changed to “Song of Five Races Under One Union” -All of this is detailed under one last “Five Year Plan” Some measures are planned to be fully enacted within ten years instead of five however. - Diplomats are sent to Xinjiang and Tibet to discuss fair representation in the new government structure. These moves are heralded as a massive step forward in the fair treatment of minorities in China. - All is not rosy however, hardliners are shocked and dismayed at the unilateral moves taken by Chairman Deng. A military coup is attempted in May but is crushed before it can do much damage. It’s predicted that the situation will only worsen as time goes on. - The Tiananmen Square protesters leave the square elated with the government. - Support of North Korea is completely cut off. All food and aid that was previously being distributed to the DPRK is instead given out to the poor. - Diplomats are sent to South Korea to discuss the worsening situation in the peninsula. - Diplomats are also sent to Vietnam and Singapore to increase trade and improve relations. - The biggest surprise however is the acknowledgement of Taiwan. Diplomats are sent to the island that holds a government that still calls itself “the Republic of China” to discuss the potential for Taipei and Beijing to become a part of one nation again. President Lee Teng-Hui of the Republic of China states that he will consider re-joining if the Democratic Republic truly follows through on its plan. - An official statement is released to South Korea and to the world imploring that they do not give aid to North Korea. Quote "If necessary we will help North Koreans emigrate to China or South Korea, even if 'the great leader' wants it or not". - Official funds are allocated to the research of ways to eliminate pollution from industry. By the way...fuck you for giving me a flag that is much, much harder to draw for Polandballs. You fucker >:( Socialist Republic of Vietnam - Inferior Scorpion IV Military: Average/Experienced/Outdated Economy: Stable (Rapidly Improving) Unity: High (Improving) - A “Second Doi Moi” is announced after the incredible success of the first in 1986. 50% of government owned farmland is auctioned off to local farmers, allowing for a much more open market in the country. Almost immediately the economy booms as petty entrepreneurs have the freedom to build their local businesses. However all is not going well. An income inequality was already being seen in 1988 following the first Doi Moi between urban and rural areas., it’s begun accelerating now. - A large amount of restrictions on the ability to own private businesses are lifted. The economy is quickly beginning to flourish. - A limited freedom of press is enacted, allowing for private newspapers. These newspapers must still pass state censors however. - A massive infrastructural project begins as the Vietnamese government seeks to create a proper road system throughout its nation. The ambitious program is set to be fully completed by 1996 with major roadways being completed by 1992. - Freedom of religion is allowed to the populace so long as they do not worship in public or state owned areas. Private worship buildings and homes are places that religion can be practiced. - 8,000 soldiers are withdrawn from Cambodia, finally there’s a light at the end of the tunnel for the Cambodian-Vietnamese War. Still, the Cambodians call for a more rapid withdrawal of Vietnamese forces. - The Vietnamese government formally apologizes for atrocities committed by the Viet Minh during the Vietnam War. - Envoys are sent to Laos and Cambodia to begin the discussion of an economic cooperative designed to improve the economic situation in the region. Laos is receptive to the idea but is not yet ready to sign onto anything yet. Cambodia demands the withdrawal of all Vietnamese troops before they even consider joining. - The Vietnamese government begins research of bioasphalt, a much more cost-effective option for Vietnam considering the economic situation, the abundance of plants in Vietnam that could be suitable to a bioasphalt, and the price of petroleum (asphalt is petroleum based, after all). No major progress is made yet. United Mexican States - Satansick Military: Average/Inexperienced/Slightly Outdated Economy: Faltering (Stable) Unity: Low (Stable) - Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, druglord, is arrested. This causes fighting between rival drug cartels. - Mexico legalizes cannabis and begins taxation of the famous drug. A member of the Mexican Congress is nearly assassinated in response but survives the attempt. It is unknown which cartel sponsored the attack. - Mexico also decriminalizes the carrying of up to five grams of cocaine. This is followed by more severe penalties for drug trafficking. The aim is to decrease prosecution of drug users and instead prosecute drug traffickers. 27 Mexican policemen die attempting to arrest traffickers from April 15th, the day the bill was enacted, to July 1st. 34 drug traffickers are killed. - Congress fails to pass a bill that would attempt to remove corruption on all levels of government. A protest begins in Mexico City on June 3rd but ends within a week. - The government invests in research of genetically modified foods. Monsanto is happy. - The Party of the Democratic Revolution is founded. Israel - Trebgarta Military: Above Average/Experienced/Modern Economy: Unstable (Improving) Unity: Low (Declining) - The Israeli government authorizes the military to employ all of its resources in the fight against the Intifada on April 15th. The ensuing Israeli actions leads to the death of some 500 Palestinians by the beginning of June (63 were killed in one day on May 3rd in an event dubbed the Gaza City Massacre). Rather than restoring order, as was Israel’s goal, they instead caused an eruption of anger and violence from Palestine. Suddenly instead of stones the Palestinians were armed with rifles. Fierce combat commenced throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip. By the end of June around 1,000 Palestinians and 137 Israelis were dead. - Israel seeks endorsements from European governments in the fight against the Intifada. They find only disgust and anger from the European nations. The United Kingdom and France outright condemn Israel. - Funding is placed in the building of more CAS aircraft to support the Israeli infantry. - Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Jordan all denounce Israel and demand they cease their actions at once or face war. Islamic Republic of Iran - EuSKalduna Military: Below Average/Experienced/Outdated Economy: Faltering Unity: Low - The Iran-Iraq war has ended. Both nations have been devastated both militarily and economically with almost no real overall victory for either side. Iran, learning from the war, has begun setting up and funding officer schools with particularly punishing courses so that the failure of officers to adequately and decisively lead their men isn’t repeated. - Military training becomes compulsory, those that are sent to schools in their childhood are required to train. Drills become the equivalent to P.E., tactics and strategies are taught in the same classrooms as mathematics and history. - Every military vehicle in the entire military is equipped with a Koran. Morale improves a bit. - Iran again adopts the brutalist architecture of the 1950s-1970s. No I will not create a Persian name for you. - Graffiti is legalized. Imams are asked to lead groups of faithful followers to decorate the brutalist styled buildings to make them at least somewhat less depressing. I mean goodness, brutalist? Really? Gross dude. - Throughout the war it was common for Iranian and Iraqi forces to bomb and assault each others’ means of oil production. As such it has become necessary to focus on the repair of oil facilities in Iran. Funds are allocated to this. - A CCTV program is enacted to monitor the graffiti. Anything deemed heretical leads to the examining of CCTV tapes and the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the heretical imagery. - The Iranian government begins enacting somewhat pro-business policies to try to repair the economy. It will take years before it truly becomes healthy however. - Iran is promoted as a true defender and follower of the Shia faith. Federal Republic of Germany - TheBloodyNine Military: Average/Inexperienced/Modern Economy: Strong (Improving) Unity: Stable (Improving) - The military is mobilized in preparation for an assumed end to the separation of Germany. Diagrams of movement and plans are sent to East Germany to ensure no incidents take place. The goal is for everything to remain orderly. - The Federal Republic officially announces its desire for its people to remain orderly and patient in the coming months and years, stating that this is a time of great progress for the German people. - A large amount of funds are allocated to the construction of factories throughout West Germany as the government predicts a flood of East Germans looking for work when the borders open. - The Germans seem to be keenly interested in English scientist Tim Berners-Lee. The scientist has made it his goal to create a global hyperlinked information system. It’s proposed that it may be possible to create a “web” of “hypertext documents” to be viewed by “browsers” using a client-server architecture. Could you imagine? - The West German and East German governments begin earnestly discussing the steps needed to unify safely and without much fuss. - In this time of great change the West German government has begun discussing with the other members of Europe the idea of a single governmental body in Europe. Perhaps a European Union of sorts. Nah, that’s not possible, is it? - Major funding boosts are seen in the computer science field. Computers are seen as the future in Germany it seems. - West Germany offers what forces it can spare to the defense of South Korea. Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - Griffster26 Military: Massive/Experienced/Modern Economy: Crippled (Declining) Unity: Wavering (Declining) - Mercifully, the Red Army begins pulling out of Afghanistan. The protracted conflict has cost the Soviet Union billions of dollars and over 10,000 Soviet lives. - A drawdown begins as the USSR looks to alleviate at least a bit of the massive pressure the military cost has placed on its economy. - Advisors are pulled from Angola, Mozambique, and Ethiopia. - For the first time since 1917 the Soviet people are exercising a democratic choice, albeit limited. While most CPSU-endorsed candidates are elected, more than 300 lose their seats to independents such as Boris Yeltsin, Andrei Sakharov, and Anotoly Sobchak. - Chechnya, Abkhazia, Ossetia, and Dagestan are all elevated to to status of Soviet Republics. - Envoys are sent to and received from China. - Borders to the West are opened. The Iron Curtain is truly being lifted. The world begins a collective sigh of relief. - The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is officially condemned and all support to them is cut off. Polish People’s Republic - Sheepaay Military: Average/Inexperienced/Modern Economy: Crippled (Improving) Unity: Wavering (Declining) - The military begins a special focus on Air Force training for border defense. - Slowly, painfully, changes are made in the governmental structure of Poland. First, Solidarity is re-legalized. Following this 94 sessions of talks between 13 working groups are held. These are dubbed the Round Table Talks. The talks result in the agreement to create a bicameral legislature and a president who will act as chief executive. - The spring elections come around. The Solidarity party captures ALL of the 35% of the seats they were allowed to compete for in the Sejm. In the Senate they capture 99 of the 100 seats, with the last seat going to an independent. The communists have suffered a tremendous blow to their dominance and indeed their legitimacy. - Special focus is placed on the fossil fuel industry, particularly coal mining, in hopes of improving the weak economy. Ukrainian SSR - Amfleet Unity: Wavering (Declining) - Cleanup of Chernobyl continues and the death toll continues to increase. Three of the reactors still run but the construction of two others is halted. - Ukrainian forces are sent by the Soviet Union in hopes of preventing any sort of destabilization in the country. - The Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches are legalized, pleasing the masses. - The provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk are made autonomous oblasts within the Ukrainian SSR. In exchange, the Ukrainian language remains officially recognized and taught in schools. United States of America - KriegsMar1ne Military: Massive/Elite/State of the Art Economy: Wealthy Unity: Stable - Colt Manufacturing Company, SIG Sauer, Heckler & Koch, and Steyr Mannlicher all are commissioned to compete for a contract to produce the replacement rifle for the M16. The first prototypes are in design phase. - The 1st Marine Expeditionary Unit is moved to South Korea in response to the escalating crisis in the peninsula. Air Force patrols are near constant. At one stage the president even uses the word “genocide”. - Human Watch agents are sent to Israel and Gaza to investigate for war crimes. - Laws are more strictly enforced in major urban areas such as Detroit, New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles in an effort to cut down on crime. - Budget changes include increased allocation to hydroelectric, solar, wind, and nuclear energy research as well as planned, staggered cuts to fossil fuel based power plants, with coal taking priority. It’s thought that Pablo Escobar influenced this decision. - The United States allocates funds to the computer science industry, particularly to the research and development of better supercomputers, capable of processing obscene amounts of data. - Separate from the other budgetary increases to nuclear energy, the United States allocates funds to the research and development of fusion energy. Please get your turns in by March 8th. I would like to have the next turn out on March 9th. If you have a problem with the turn and feel you are capable of speaking to me reasonably, feel free to do so.
