Second Korean War
At the beginning of July all of the rhetoric of North Korea suddenly ceased. A week of silence. South Korean and American forces feverishly prepared for another war in the peninsula. July 4th in the United States was one of frantic, almost desperate celebration. Nervousness was almost palpable. On July 5th the South Korean government ordered a full evacuation of Seoul as well as other cities near the border. Many civilians went to Busan, living in prepared shelters. Seoul became a ghost town.
An unnerving silence fell on the night of July 7th. Soldiers sat in their bunkers and trenches, staring across the border into the North Korean darkness. While all of the soldiers suspected war was right around the corner, they could not know that this was the final night of peace in Korea. The night slowly drifted into day. Shocking reports filed in from Busan.
The clock ticked to 7:00 AM in Busan, throngs of civilians packed the metro system. Among them were North Korean agents carrying the dangerous nerve agent, sarin. Survivors of the attack reported a group of six Koreans in eight different locations placing gas masks on their head, then rolling canisters into the masses of people. The colorless, odorless liquid spilled out into the crowds and quickly turned into a vapor, suffocating those directly near it. Simultaneous attacks occured at the Daejeo, Sasang, Deokcheon, Minam, Seomyeon, Yeonsan, Dongnae, and Suyeon metro stations as well as a number of government buildings. The design of the canisters allowed for a slow leak of the vapor rather than an immediate release of the contents, countering the quick evaporating qualities of sarin and extending its effectiveness. Within 30 minutes well over 6,000 people were affected. By the end of the day 243 people would die, the majority being South Koreans. 21 Japanese, six Americans, three British, and two Chinese died in the attack.
Across the southern portion of Korea a number of North Korean agents would also commit more conventional acts of terrorism, going to malls, hospitals, and other highly populated places and opening fire on large crowds. A total of 544 people died in these terrorist attacks, making it the most deadly terrorist attack in modern history. In all of the conventional attacks the North Korean agents died, either by suicide or by being gunned down. None of the sarin attack perpetrators were caught.
Immediately following the attacks the war truly began. Waves of North Korean begin across the border. Due to the technological superiority of the South Koreans and Americans over half of the DPRK's IL-28s were shot down, either by anti-air or by the vastly superior air capabilities of the coalition. Those that managed to get through do moderate damage to communications and radar facilities but not enough to significantly affect southern forces. Artillery rained heavy fire on Seoul, mostly attacking civilian targets. However, due to the diligence of the South Korean government there are almost no deaths. The city is heavily damaged in the attack. Artillery fire also rained down on known defensive positions, causing more than a few casualties.
At precisely 0830 in Korea the artillery fire ceased. An uneasy 30 minutes passed, American and South Korean troops quickly reformed and attempted rapid repairs of damaged defenses. American artillery begins firing full force at North Korean artillery positions. The sheer volume of fire allows for a majority of artillery batteries to be destroyed.
0900. The entire might of the North Korean military begins its surge across the border. Immediately the South Korean line breaks, leaving the 1st Marine Expeditionary Unit with its flank thoroughly exposed. Quickly the North Korean forces encircled the American unit, preventing a retreat. The 1st MEU was now surrounded just east of Yeoncheon. They would remain there for two weeks, repelling repeated attempts by DPRK forces to break through and destroy the forces. The few US soldiers that attempted to surrender were immediately and unceremoniously gunned down, the marines knew surrendering was not an option.
South Korean forces retreated quickly, then stopped just north of Seoul and formed a new defensive line in prepared positions. American forces rushed up to reinforce the line and prepared for the next assault. On July 10th it came. A weak artillery bombardment by the DPRK followed by a massive rush of troops. This time the line would hold. US air elements and artillery forces decimated the North Korean forces, in two days of fighting well over 3000 North Koreans were killed or captured compared to only 120 casualties on the side of the coalition. US and ROK forces surged forward in a massed counter-assault. Fierce fighting occurred throughout the following week and a half before the allied forces reached the 38th Parallel again. The 1st MEU of Yeoncheon was rescued on July 22nd. They lost nearly 1,000 of their approximately 2,200 soldiers. The 1st MEU was pulled to the rear immediately and evacuated a week later to be replenished.
Massed waves of US bombers flooded across the 38th Parallel as the ground troops replenished and prepared for their own invasion. The cities of the north are bombed fiercly and almost non-stop for two weeks with the combined air elements of the United States, Republic of Korea, and now the United Kingdom. Pyongyang is almost entirely destroyed in the bombings. North Korean civilians who manage to survive and escape the onslaught begin to flood across the 38th and the Yalu river. The ones who cross to South Korea are immediately detained and begin the process of being re-educated. Thousands of them are transported to the United States, Japan, and India where they will be educated and prepared for a new life. Those that cross the Yalu are placed in Chinese peacekeeping camps and community shelters.
On August 7th the combined forces of the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, and now Canada begin their assault. Amphibious landings by US Marines take place near Wonsan and south of Pyongyang. At the same time the full force of the coalition surges across the 38th and blitz the North Korean forces. The assault immediately throws the North Korean military into disarray, DPRK forces retreat en masse and without any order. Unfortunately for coalition forces this means the marines are unable to cut off and surround the North Korean military, allowing them to live to fight another day. However they do cause massive casualties. An estimated 10,000 North Koreans are killed or captured by the end of September. Coalition forces steadily moved northward, facing limited North Korean resistance until the winter forced them to stop at Kaechon. Throughout December the line would remain unchanged, light skirmishing was the extent of infantry combat as both sides probed defenses. US forces regularly bombarded North Korean positions with artillery. Coalition forces ruled the air and rained hell on the suffering army below.
At year's end a total of 1,235 coalition members are categorized as wounded, killed, or missing. An estimated 17,000 North Koreans are thought to be dead. The war seemed to be well in the grasp of coalition forces, the end of the brutal dictatorship seemed near.

- On July 15th the Indian government makes the decision to withdraw its peacekeepers from Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi releases a statement where he says "the Republic of India will respect the wishes of our southern neighbors and hopes to develop a friendship with Sri Lanka in the coming years". The Sri Lankan responds with gratitude.
- However this does not mean India has become peaceful. Insurgency is rampant in North East India. The troops that left Sri Lanka are transported to this region to crack down on the insurgents of Kashmir and Jammu. The Indian government offers pardons to those insurgents who wish to turn themselves in but will give no quarter to those who continue to fight. By year's end over 200 insurgents are dead. Close to 100 choose to surrender.
- The Indian Parliament manages to pass a bill giving tax breaks to civilians looking to start their own businesses. Tacked onto the bill are tax breaks to banks that give loans to these civilians and businesses, a bill that had failed to pass in the first half of the year. It'll be a few years before the full effects of this bill are seen.
- The first major task of the Indian Sanitation Bureau (ISB) has been given by the government. The cleaning of the rivers is priority number one. Thousands of jobs are created for the sole purpose of cleaning the filth that fills the many rivers of India. Human waste is filtered out, chemical pollution begins to be removed, bodies are pulled out of the water and the practice of floating bodies is banned (much to the chagrin of a few Indians). Real progress is being seen but there's still a long way to go.
- The tourism industry continues to gain special focus. Public lands are leased to companies looking to build hotels, resorts, casinos, and other touristy locations along the coastal cities. The Indian economy takes an immediate hit (offset by the many jobs being created by the ISB) but the future payoff will be tremendous.
- On August 20th a bill passes that is designed to crack down on corruption in the government. This has a vastly unforeseen consequence. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is discovered to be accepting large bribes from foreigners, some of which are tracked back to the KGB. The embarrassed Gandhi immediately resigns in an attempt to placate his peers. He is arrested on August 29th and sentenced to 24 years in prison on November 25th. His replacement is V.P. Singh.
- A bill meant to incentivize farmers to grow cash crops fails to make it through Parliament.
- The Indus-Ganges Trade Association is formed with the goal of protecting nations from being dominated by foreign investment and business. Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives are all invited with Bangladesh and the Maldives joining initially. Pakistan and Nepal strongly refuse. Bhutan and Sri Lanka are undecided.
- India offers to discuss the splitting of Kashmir along religious boundaries with Pakistan. Pakistan refuses to listen and demands that the entirety of Kashmir be handed over.
- A bill that would give aid to the people of Sri Lanka stagnates in Parliament.

- On July 7th a North Korean terrorist attack in Busan kills 21 Japanese civilians. This provides a legitimate reason for the Diet to work on amending the Japanese Constitution to at least decrease the restriction on the Japanese military It will be at least a year before the feverish debating subsides and a true decision is made in the Diet. If a supermajority votes to approve the amendment it will go to the general population as a referendum. 50% +1 will mean the amendment is passed.
- The Diet passes their budget bill that will award bonuses and tax breaks to companies in the entertainment industry that export their products to foreign countries. The biggest benefits will be given to those that export their products to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. No real effect is experienced on the economy right away, this is seen as a long-term investment.
- The Japanese government begins a program to automate the bureaucracy in the country in an attempt to increase computer science demand. However massive glitches in the immediate rollout turn many off from the idea of automation, people generally believe that they are better than machines.
- Despite this, a bill is passed that makes computer science a mandatory class in Japanese high schools. The government clearly thinks computers are the future.
- Indonesia and the Philippines jointly release a damning report of bribery by Japanese officials in an attempt to get them to look the other way as Japan attempted to strong-arm their companies into becoming principally Japanese. In addition the insulted nations release information that Japanese spies had attempted to infiltrate the two nations early in 1989. The two nations had captured the majority of these spies and through thorough interrogation discovered the intention of the Japanese to gather information on the weaker portions of their industries and economies so as to allow the Japanese to create monopolies there. The Japanese government could not be reached for comment. In the wake of the announcement several Pacific nations increase their tariffs on Japan. A few minor nations force the Japanese to leave their embassies. The economy of Japan begins to collapse as everyone loses their faith in, and respect for, Japan.
Sorry bud. It was.
- Japan and Vietnam officially sign a trade deal that allows a number of Vietnamese students to study in Japan in exchange for reduced tariffs and the right to use certain lands in Vietnam for Japanese businessmen. Cashcrop farms are established quickly. Some hire only Japanese and some only Vietnamese. At the Japanese farms the employees are paid the regular Japanese wages. At the Vietnamese farms the employees are paid a bit above the regular Vietnamese wage Naturally the best and hardest Vietnamese workers are the ones who are hired here.
- Japan begins accepting refugees from North Korea. They are immediately put to work but are paid less than the usual wage at any of their jobs.

- The DPRK launches a massed terrorist attack in Busan using sarin gas. They launch other attacks on civilian locations throughout southern cities using conventional means.
- The DPRK invades South Korea. The invasion begins well but quickly goes awry. By year's end things are looking grim for the dictatorship as they hold onto a sliver of their land.

- North Korea launches multiple attacks throughout South Korea, the worst being a sarin attack throughout the Busan metro system. Over 500 civilians are killed in the attacks.
- Seoul is devastated by a full scale artillery bombardment. The majority of North Korean artillery batteries were focused on key targets in the city of Seoul. Luckily the ROK government had the foresight to evacuate the capital.
- North Korea then launches a full scale invasion but is soon turned back. By year's end they've been pushed nearly to the Yalu river.

Unity: Wavering (Declining)
- China establishes the Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy (ICRE...iCRE?) in Wuhan with the purpose of researching alternative energies as well as continuing the research of the reduction of pollution. It will be a bit before anything comes out of this.
- The National Center of Energy (NCE) is established in Tianjin as a new central research institute. Under its banner are the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (INNET), the newly minted ICRE, and others that have an emphasis on energy. Putting everything under one banner gives the advantage of a solid chain of command of sorts while having everything segmented still allows the individual institutes to focus on their subject. The institutes all share information allowing for quicker research.
- The National Center for Science and Technology (NCST) is also established in Beijing (what a busy half year). Similar to NCE in function, the NCST instead focuses on...science and technology.
- Peacekeeping forces are moved to the North Korean border to keep refugees in check and orderly. Refugees are accepted and moved to prepared camps for re-education and preparation for life as proper civilians in the future. Whether the Chinese plan to deport them back to North Korea after the war is unknown.
- The flag is officially changed (thank god) to the five races flag. Beautiful.
- A new sweeping change occurs in China that naturally enrages the hardliners. The National People's Congress is reformed into a bicameral system with a Senate and a House of Representatives. The Senate is made up of only Communist Party of China (CPC) members and is the direct superior to the House of Representatives. The House allows open elections with no restrictions on which parties are allowed to participate and strict rules regarding the prevention of corruption and gaming of the system so as to prevent oppression and allow for fair voting. The House has the power to propose bills to the Senate which then has final say on if the bill may pass. However the Senate does not need to propose bills to the House.
- The House of Representatives holds a vote on December 1st. 500 seats are up for vote. The Progressive Party wins 268 votes, the Chinese Youth Party wins 92 votes, the CPC wins 86 votes, and the Chinese Democratic Socialist Party wins the remaining 54 votes. The Kuomintang remains outlawed.
- Another, larger coup is attempted to oust Deng and his suddenly revolutionary ideas. This one fails more spectacularly than the last. The top three military officials in China are captured and summarily executed for treason. China may be moving towards a democracy but that does not mean they've grown soft.
- The Green China Organization begins a campaign to change the entirety of Chinese culture regarding pollution and treatment of the environment. A massive education campaign begins. The government supplements this by making a compulsory civics class on all levels of schooling that includes the importance of a non-polluted planet.
- On a more uncomfortable subject for many of the youth the government also establishes a compulsory sexual education class for middle and high school. Naturally many young boys make a joke of these classes. Penis jokes transcend all cultures.
- The C9 league is established. It is a coalition of the best public universities in China. C9 League universities receive special funding so as to be the best of the best and to provide the most effective education possible. Every five years there is to be a review on which universities are members of the C9 League to ensure the best are in.
- Trade relations with Vietnam improve.

- Vietnam joins the International Wildlife Conservation Association in an effort to conserve its jungles. A special effort is made to protect the endangered Indochinese tiger.
- The Vietnam National University is founded in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi as a merger of a number of different universities to create one large, more robust university. Vietnam is clearly focused on education.
- Areas that are not parts of conservation zones are open to logging. The logging industry rapidly expands, large swaths of the jungle are ripped apart.
- Cotton, jute, sugar cane, and coffee beans are the crops of the time. The money yielded by growing and selling these crops is a huge boon to the agricultural industry.
- India and Vietnam begin a partnership to research bioasphalt more effectively.
- Vietnam petitions to join ASEAN but is rejected. Further democratic reform is required before they will be admitted.
- Trade relations with China and India improve markedly and the economy continues its rapid improvement.
Infrastructure is also a special focus so as to improve productivity of the Japanese owned farms.
- Vietnam and the United States officially re-open diplomatic relations with a splash. An agreement is made for a student/professor exchange program with the goal of helping Vietnamese students improve their agricultural and engineering knowledge.
- Vietnam finally agrees to withdraw fully from Cambodia. At long last the war is truly over as the last Vietnamese soldier departs on December 20th.
- Vietnamese engineers begin working on a screenless hammer mill to increase reliability and durability of the hammer mill.
- A more inspired project is one that would incorporate hydraulic cylinders on the blades and an automatic transmission into bulldozers. This arduous task has yielded little to no results for the Vietnamese yet but their engineers are very much confident.

Israel - Trebgarta
Military: Above Average/Experienced/Modern
Economy: Unstable (Stagnant)
Unity: Wavering (Declining)
- The Israeli government, in a fit of sanity, decides to pull its military back and prevent war with all of its neighbors. This does nothing to quell the Palestinians though who continue to assault Israeli positions. Terrorist attacks are common throughout Israel. A devastating attack by five Palestinians occurs in Jerusalem on September 15th, 86 Israelis are killed at the Wailing Wall. News of the Wailing Wall Massacre quickly spreads throughout the globe but sympathy can only run so far after the events of the last few months. Most foreigners see both sides as evil..
- In an attempt to unfuck their PR situation the Israeli government officially apologizes for all of the war crimes committed recently. This does nothing to stop the violence nor does it really placate Israel's neighbors. However the four countries due decide to at least hold off on an invasion.

- Even more money is sunk into the rebuilding of the oil industry. Iranian money is getting spread thin and the repair efforts are very slow going.
- Iran begins a "Project Cracker". The goal is to exploit the mineral rich mountains of Iran to help boost the ailing economy. It will take years to gather the equipment and resources needed to actually begin mining.
- The education sector receives some doctrine changes. History sections focus on the Iran-Iraq war and show how the Iranians were truly morally superior.
- The government calls on all Muslims to truly become brotherly and engage in mutual charity, supporting each other and helping the nation to survive and recover.
- What the fuck is advanced solar energy. I'm gonna need you to actually give me information to research lol

Republic of Iraq - Jack Knife
Military: Below Average/Experienced/Outdated
Economy: Faltering (Improving)
Unity: Stable (Stable)
- The military quickly begins downsizing to ease the economic strain on the country. Those who are laid off are automatically reservists.
- A four year plan is instituted to repair the heavily ravaged nation. A special focus is placed on the oil industry.
- Economic reform begins to try to boost the economy. Privatized business is allow and foreign investments are allowed. Particular focus is placed on attempting to attract American, Western European, or Asian investors into Iraq as a low-cost manufacturing export state. Slowly the country begins to claw its way out of the hole it fell into.
- Iraq officially denounces North Korea. "[The Democratic Republic of Korea are] aggressors to peace and a menace to the world".
- Israel is also denounced for obvious reasons. Nobody bats an eye.
- Saudi Arabia acknowledges that the debt is much to large to repay but absolving Iraq of the debt will take awhile.

Federal Republic of Germany - TheBloodyNine
Military: Average/Inexperienced/Modern
Economy: Strong (Stable)
Unity: Stable (Stable)
- West Germany continues its efforts to harness the power of the Internet.
- As the borders dissolve the West German government passes a measure that all former members of the Eastern military will be given the option to leave with a partial pension.
- Remaining Eastern military units merge with the West. Immediate military exercises take place to increase unit cohesion and bring the East up to speed on Western doctrine.
- The KSK is created.
- Korean refugees are accepted and put to work in the massive factories built in West Germany.
- East Germans flood across the border and are immediately swooped up and given jobs in the massive factory complexes just recently built in the West. Those that remain in the East are bitter that the Eastern region are seemingly getting little to no focus or aid. The Eastern economy continues to suffer while the West booms.
- Oh yeah, also the Berlin Wall comes down.
Get your turn in on time next week. I won't accept a late turn again

- Soviet and Ukrainian forces flood into Romania at the onset of protests but are too late to prevent Romanian forces from firing on civilians. The Romanian president is eventually quartered and executed.
- The Soviets secure their border to North Korea.
- Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania all become independent of the USSR.
- The USSR grants the Baltic nations full independence. A referendum is held in Kaliningrad on who they wish to belong to. They choose Poland.

- The USSR requests UN assistance in ending the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. As is tradition, the UN does nothing.

Military: Average/Inexperienced/Modern

Unity: Wavering (Improving)
- Monkey see, monkey do. Poland wants to get in on the computer science action. R&D for the computer science industry gains a funding boost.
- The Polish government begins the development of a new special forces unit named JW GROM. It is to be used to combat terrorism.
- Training rotation commences so as to have a few units training at any given time.
- Catholicism flourishes, churches begin being constructed across the country as the entire nation gets in touch with their faith.
- Coal is a heavily used fuel at this time, used heavily for home heating. It is incredibly cheap in Poland.

United Mexican States - Satansick
Military: Average/Inexperienced/Slightly Outdated
Economy: Faltering
Unity: Low
- U.S. advisers arrive in Mexico to help improve the effectiveness of the Mexican military, particularly in the art of counter drug warfare.
- The Mexican Federal Police and Mexican Armed Forces practice civil war scenarios should the worst happen.
- The Mexican government succeeds in passing a different anti-corruption bill, this one focused on the police and military force. Slowly corrupt officials are exposed and removed. In response, the Sinaloa Cartel assaults a government building, killing 12 in brutal executions. A Congressman's villa is raided as well but luckily he was not home at the time. However one of his guards is captured, tortured, and killed.
- Mexico requests that Central American nations coordinate in the ending of drug trafficking. Guatemala and Honduras respond to the call and request a meeting of government heads and diplomats to discuss what can be done to combat this. Nicaragua, Costa, Rica, and Panama want nothing to do with this.
- Mexico attempts to negotiate a free trade deal with a non-existant European Union.
- The Mexican agricultural industry continues to research genetically modified crops. Research on this subject is pretty much indefinite.
- "Green energy" is the phrase of the year with "computer science" being the only rival. Mexico is now in on it, researching their own green energy.
- Cannabis research is fully a thing now. Radical.

Economy: Wealthy (Stable)
Unity: Stable (Stable)
- The United States becomes involved in the Second Korean War.
- Wargames occur in the Mediterranean with the Spanish, Italians, and French. The British look wistfully on as they get left out.
- The United States dedicates funding to the research and development of railguns. A railgun is an electromagnetic projectile launcher based on similar principles to the homopolar motor. A railgun uses a pair of parallel conductors, or rails, along which a sliding armature is accelerated by the electromagnetic effects of a current that flows down one rail, into the armature and then back along the other rail. Basically it's future but in 1989.
- A student/professor exchange program is conducted with Vietnam to grow relations and economic prosperity. This landmark event shows a marked change in the foreign policy of both Vietnam and the United States.
- The penny is discontinued.
- An education bill is in the works that would increase funding of public schools.
- The United States television and radio networks are floods with ads that promote hard work, fitness, and stuff like that. Nobody really pays it much mind.
- The United States begins accepting refugees from North Korea, thorough re-education is to take place with most refugees requiring at least two years of education before they can become part of the general population. Refugees are astonished by the sheer abundance of food and entertainment in the United States. Many feel betrayed by their former government.
That's it. It's done. Turn 2 is done. If you have any complaints here's what I've got to say:

NK IS OKAY
I think to make it a little more authentic, we should all have a UN General Assembly meeting (on FPRP Steam Chat) every 6 months (every turn) just to discuss world events and get our foreign ministers interacting. This week probably ought to discuss the Korean War 2.0 and the economic situation of East Asia.
Rate Agree if you think doing this every tun is a good idea?
We'll have to coordinate a time later on. I work full time with a 2nd shift (afternoon/night) job so it'll be difficult for me to talk when the majority of you are home from school unless it's the weekend (which I think is all of our best bet).

I've been pushing to have one of those for awhile. theendofthewall.slack.com is the chat I have set up for that, it allows those that either don't have Steam or can't join Steam group chats due to being on mobile to join in.
GIVE ME YOUR TURNS.
