Students working on anti-bacterial medicines use a slightly edited series of compounds from the Penicillium mold. After some tests, they find that within hours, a petri dish of streptococcus is outright eliminated. This new “miracle drug”, simply named Penicillin, is expected to save millions of lives around the world - A small-scale revolt takes place in the Saarland. German nationalists, having smuggled weapons and created firebombs, seize a number of administrative buildings held by French governors. During the seizure of the buildings, no shots are fired, but the nationalists are very quickly put to siege. A month passes, and the nationalists refuse to budge, as they are being supplied by German locals. Eventually, the French military drops all pretenses, and storms the buildings. An intense, multi-day battle in the city streets takes place, killing hundreds of nationalists and French soldiers alike. This is a major hit to France’s image in the occupied territories of Germany - The situation in China begins to degrade as small border skirmishes take place between Warlords and the Republic. No outright declaration of war has taken place yet, but many fear that it is only a matter of time until it ends up being so - Fascist groups begin organizing in Czechoslovakia. The Slovak People’s Party begins staging rallies in support of an independent, and anti-democratic, Slovakia. Czech police break apart these protests on the regular, but their rapid growth is concerning to the Entente - The Italian Empire is formed. Mussolini declares that he is “the senate”, and King Vittorio Emanuele is declared Imperator. Mussolini’s ambitions for power have been achieved, and Italy now stands as one of the great powers in Europe yet again
--
- A small-scale revolt takes place in the Saarland. This is a major hit to France’s image in the occupied territories of Germany - A number of arms, supplies and advisors are sent to Poland to oversee the young nation’s defense. France’s relations with Poland go back centuries, and there is a deep sense of irony that, once again, France has come to the nation’s aid against an expansionist Russia. Defensive tactics, such as those used during the Polish-Soviet War, are studied and implemented for Poland’s new army - The “Dreyfus Law” is put into place. A series of regulations are now officially law, and those accused of targeting people based on their sex, skinc olor or religion can have their sentences extended for committing what is now designated as a “hate crime” - The “Loi sur la Défense des Institutions Républicaines” (Defense of Republican Institutions Act) is made law around the same time as the Dreyfus Law. A hefty 10 year sentence is placed on those accused of voter intimidation and fraud, and political parties found to support these actions are banned from participating in the elections for two cycles - Members of royal families across Europe are allowed to reside and even become citizens of France. However, they are barred from participating in politics beyond voting, and a strict ban is put in place to prevent the foundation of monarchist/imperialist parties in France, with the courts given a wide brush to paint with - The French government begins to expand the gold reserve, pushing for nearly 50 billion Francs by 1927, and doubling it to 100 billion by 1930. This comes as France also begins to buy small portions of “crucial industries”, such as defense, manufacturing and communications. The nationalization of minor industries sends hardcore capitalists into a panic, and the schadenfreude is palpable for the socialists - A major industrial project begins in France’s colonies. The French government demands that the number of paved roads be doubled by 1930, and that the gravel and dirt roads be tripled. Rail lines are also proposed to link major cities like Tunis and Algiers, or Hanoi and Phnom Penh - Factories begin to crop up in populated cities in the colonies. The French government relaxes restrictions on native workers, and encourages locals to become factory workers in these huge manufactories. Everything from machine parts to machine guns are slated for production in these factories, and France’s economy begins to reap the benefits almost immediately, as do locals within the colonies - The French government commissioned the construction of over 20 new medical and engineering universities across the state, including one in Tunis and Saigon. At these colleges, students will be able to put themselves to the test and improve themselves and the world around them, all of which is funded by the French taxpayers - Three carriers, designated under the Richelieu Class are set for production in Mers El Kébir. These ships are named as the Richelieu, Jean Bart and the Armand. All three are expected to be completed by the summer of 1927, nearly doubling France’s existing aircraft carrier fleet - The French military continues to expand upon the defensive fortifications facing Germany. Stretching from the Saarland to the Swiss border, the “Painlevé Line” begins to expand inwards. A huge number of forts, bunkers and chokepoints are created in the event of a possibly expansionist Germany. Some military advisors believe it would be best that some forts face Belgium, but are laughed out of the room, as “Germany couldn’t possibly go through Belgium twice in one century” - Special units are formed within colonial divisions. A number of troops are designated for “anti-partisan” and “anti-insurgent” missions. These soldiers are led by French officers, but are given the chance of command if they prove both their loyalty and proficiency in battle - Using a modified 75mm cannon, French military engineers design an Anti-Aircraft Artillery piece. This new cannon, dubbed the Mangouste (Mongoose) system can fire up to 60 rounds per minute using a large clip and automatic recoil system. The shells are specially designed to fly out past a certain distance and then detonate with a huge amount of shrapnel, easily damaging enemy aircraft that gets too close - Engineers at Bugatti present a new, 6-wheeled truck. Able to carry up to two tons in its bed, the “Géant” is a must have for any self-respecting farmer or factory owner. The French military commissions hundreds of them, and expects to see roughly 300 by the tail end of 1926

- The SFS-LKW-24, marketed as the Volkstraktor, and the Volksauto 2 are slated for exportation across Europe. In the Balkans and Scandinavia, the Volksauto 2 is a big seller, and the injection of cash into the German economy is greatly appreciated - The German government slows down printing of the Rentenmark by roughly a quarter. This allows the currency to stabilize, and as a result, wages finally begin to plateau, and the German government sees a minor return on investment in regards to taxes - A massive industrial program is underway with the help of the Arbeitsgruppen. First, dozens of factories are to be constructed in cities like Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Konigsberg. Secondly, German railways are to be, quite literally, torn up and laid back down in order to meet the rapidly growing European Standard rail size. Thirdly, and most interestingly, the German government commissions the construction of the Autobahn, a massive intercity roadway that would allow for civilians to drive from city to city in their cars on a single road, rather than having to take bizarre, snaking routes from place to place - Assembly line production is introduced to Germany, but only in small steps. The German government fears overabundance of goods and a return to inflation, and instead moves to have the assembly line only implemented in heavy industry, such as automobiles and railway equipment - Friedrich Ebert dies in early March of a heart attack. A state funeral is held, and Otto Wells, the new leader of Germany, announces his plans to “Honor the life and desires of Herr Ebert”. Many are left wondering if Wells can be as cool headed as Ebert - Germany’s military exercises continue, now with the newly reorganized “Cavalry” divisions. These exercises grow in size considerably, and observers begin to become nervous. However, these exercises also lead to the slow hardening of Germany’s tiny military, as soldiers find themselves constantly training with little down time. What these effects will have in the future remain to be seen - With the help of Fiat, a 4-seater “pontoon” car is revealed. Nicknamed the Volksauto 3, this 4 seater, compact car is a must-have for any family man who wants to drive from place to place. Unsurprisingly, the Volksauto 3 is much more expensive than the Volksauto 2, and is purchased only by the better-off in Germany. Nonetheless, it is a fantastically selling car - The British engine that everyone seems to be copying is copied once again. This time, however, it is enlarged to pull heavy vehicles such as tractors and small trains. This huge engine is a step forward for German vehicle designs, and could lead to the creation of heavy-yet-fast tractors and trucks

- Italy officially exits the legations in Tientsin and returns their holdings to the Zhili Clique. The move is appreciated, and Italy quietly gains some brownie points amongst the Chinese - The Fascist International is formed in the city of Forlì. Parties from around the world, mainly ones in Europe, are invited to send delegates and discuss funding, support and future plans for their respective nations. As Italy is the only openly fascist state, these parties flock to Forlì, and are welcomed with open arms - In a stunning display of both audacity and strength, the Partito Nazionale Fascista marches into the Italian senate and dissolves it outright. Mussolini is made Duce, and given total control over government operations, while King Vittorio Emanuele II is declared Imperator of Italy. The Fascists are officially the only legal party, and the Empire of Italy is formed - Mussolini introduces the Nuovo Ordine (New Order). Overnight, hundreds of communists, socialists and anarchists are arrested, dozens of them executed in their homes. Anti-government practices are outlawed, and those that “violate the peace of the Empire” risk execution - The Opera Nazionale Balilla, a pro-government youth organization, is formed, and is made the only legal youth organization to be a part of. All children, boys and girls, aged between 8 and 18 are mandated to partake in ONB functions. Children that do not participate are forcibly taken from their parents - Surprisingly enough, this outright seizure of power is not protested by much of the Italian population. Mussolini’s reforms and relatively hands-off treatment of most Italian citizens are appreciated, and Emperor Emanuele is regularly greeted with cheers from the populace - A number of refineries spring up along the northern coast of Libya as Italian prospecting continues. Italy slowly begins to support its own industry with domestically produced oil, and some Italian economists propose exporting the black gold to nations in the Balkans or Eastern Europe as a way to combat future Soviet expansionism - Major reorganization of East Africa begins, with North Somaliland being made separate from Oltregiuba. The former receives Guido Corni as governor, while the latter is governed by the former Somaliland governor Cesare De Vecchi - Military fortifications of Rhodes begin construction, including a number of coastal guns. The Italian government fears a possible seizure of territory by the Turks, and are unwilling to lose a major bastion of Italian power in the eastern Mediterranean. If the Italian Empire hopes to reclaim Mare Nostrum yet again, it cannot lose an inch of ground - Somaliland and Cyrenaica begin forming their own colonial divisions that are raised to the standards of the regular Italian army, and are subservient to the Empire’s generals. However, Somaliland, Cyrenaica and Oltregiuba are encouraged to form Askari divisions as a way to defend their home territory. With the help of Italian schooling, these soldiers are easily folded into the regular Italian army - A new machine gun mimicking the American Browning M1919 is designed. Chambered in 6.5x52 Carcano, the M-251 is a belt-fed, air-cooled machine gun that can fire up to 800 rounds per minute, and is a much needed support weapon for Italian soldiers in future conflicts, as it is much lighter and easier to use than the menagerie of Maxim knockoffs - Caproni, the prolific designer of aircraft, unveils the Ca.77. This monoplane is incredibly fast, and turns faster than most of its competitors. In the nose are two M-251 machine guns, as well as two mounted on the center of the wings. The Ca.77 is a major step forward in fighter aircraft, and could prove incredibly useful in future conflict

- In a move that surprises many, Soviet and Japanese diplomats agree to finalize the border in Sakhalin. Japan will remove all military and civilian presence, and give Sakhalin over to the Soviets in its entirety. In return, the Soviets promise to take a hands-off approach to China, and will not intervene in the “warlord era” - At the diet, a bill proposes increased protections and rights for women in the workplace. In the incredibly patriarchal society of Japan, many ministers have issue with the bill’s “idealistic and impossible” desires. However, it is not thrown out entirely, and votes on the bill will take place next year - A huge number of military docks are constructed in western Japan, mainly in areas like Hokkaido and northern Honshu. Japan’s rapidly expanding navy cannot afford to be bottlenecked by commandeering civilian ports. In the realm of civilian ports, a number of zaibatsus are commissioned to construct civilian ports in Taiwan and Korea, which expands Japan’s trading possibilities - The Japanese government begins putting more and more money into primary schools and universities, while simultaneously tying them closer to the central government. Top scoring pupils are given the opportunity to work with the government, and engineers/doctors are dangled a tantalizing position in the military - The proposed 1925 elections take place. As the Army and Navy are restricted from putting through their own candidates, they are forced to instead quietly support existing parties. However, this causes a split in the vote, and Takaaki Kato of the Kenseikai party is elected Prime Minister. The Kenseikai focus on equality in labor and a stronger rule of law in Japanese politics - The 帝国総本部 (Teikoku Sōhonbu) [Imperial Headquarters] is founded. Its main purpose is to oversee all strategic decisions made by the army and navy, and provide support in regards to logistics, reinforcement, organization, and even to intervene on the behalf of generals and admirals having difficulty in the field. Some in the military feel that the Imperial Headquarters is a yoke on the “Might of Japan” - Seeing how effective German submariners were during the Great War, the Japanese navy begins conducting trials to move merchant vessels in a large “convoy” supported by destroyers and other submarine hunting vessels. The world is changing, and Japan’s navy can’t risk falling behind - The Unagi class destroyer is commissioned for production. Putting out only 1300 tons in displacement, this small destroyer is armed with only a handful of deck guns and anti-aircraft pieces, but bristles with depth charges and other anti-submarine equipment, including the recently developed “sonar”. The Japanese navy hopes to use Unagi class submarines to escort convoys in the future, and expects to see 20 of them produced by 1927 - In order to keep up with the expansion of the navy, dozens of ships are commissioned to private companies for construction. Oilers, tugs, minesweepers and a menagerie of supply and repair ships are set to construction, totaling nearly 100 ships that are expected to be seaworthy by 1928. What Japan has planned, nobody knows for sure - Germany’s massive advantage in the Great War, “infiltration”, is studied at military academies across Japan, paired with the Allied assaults using armor. Small military exercises take place in Korea to test out theories of infiltration, combined arms and massive, sweeping artillery barrages - At Mitsubishi, a new aircraft engine is designed. Named the 水銀 (Suigin) [Mercury] engine, this 6 piston “radial” design is incredibly powerful for its weight and size, comparable to the British engine designed two years prior. The Mercury is very expensive and complex, and only a handful can be used for testing - A gigantic breakthrough is made at Keio University. Students working on antibacterial medicines use a slightly edited series of compounds from the Penicillium mold. After some tests, they find that within hours, a petri dish of streptococcus is outright eliminated. This new “miracle drug”, simply named Penicillin, is expected to save millions of lives around the world

- In return for massive amounts of steel to continue the creation of the multi-state railway, the Turkish government agrees to export tea to the Soviet Union. The deal seems incredibly one sided to those in the USSR, but the Soviet’s industry dwarfs Turkey’s by a significant order of magnitude - Left-wing extremists in Turkey are given a simple choice: Serve out a miserable prison sentence that could last up to decades, or be exiled to the Soviet Union. Many choose the latter, and are ordered to never return to Turkey. The Soviets welcome these ideologically similar expats with open arms - The Turkish government sends advisors to Teheran in order to support the recent Iranian revolution. Reforms similar to Turkey, in regards to secularization and nationalization, slowly begin to take place in Iran. The similar size of the population makes things easy for Turkish advisors - American philosopher John Dewey travels to Turkey to oversee the recent nationalization of the education sector. Dewey provides his own point of view, mainly in regards to the formation of a court of public opinion, as well as a push for education about democracy amongst primary-age students - The latinization project for Turkish finishes, and the government officially recognizes the latin alphabet as the official alphabet of Turkey. All arabic scripts are removed from legal documents and Turkish schools. The government also introduces a law regarding surnames, and requires that all individuals have a surname, and must drop royal/religious titles from their names on legal documents - The Çalışma Bakanlığı (Labor Ministry) is formed, and facilitates the creation of state-run workers unions for “all industrial sectors”. The CB will also keep track of wages, production quotas and price fluctuations, and will introduce legislation accordingly. The CB is a major step forward for Turkey’s modernization - Turkey’s industrial sector continues to grow with the help of the government, with factories for consumer goods cropping up in almost every major city in the nation. Construction of the Kars-Erzurum-Sivas-Kayseri-Ankara railway begins, with its final goal being a connection with the Soviet railway in Kars. Essentially, this could lead to a nonstop trip from Ankara all the way to Moscow or Leningrad in the future - Several divisions of the Turkish army are sent to monitor the new possessions in northern Iraq. Religious leaders known as Shayks, as well as former officers from the Hamidiye class are immediately hunted down by Turkish troops. Many are executed or exiled to British Iraq. Meanwhile, the tribal leaders, known as Aghas, are given a simple choice: Execution or secularization. Many choose the latter, and agree to drop their self-given title, and are given assistance in agricultural needs - The Turkish air force begins to expand rapidly. Rather than put out the most recent designs, the Turkish are satisfied with producing older planes at a much higher number. By the end of 1925, the number of planes in the Turkish air force has nearly tripled, and Turkey quickly grows to having one of the largest air forces in the world, granted its “quantity over quality” in the former Sublime Porte - As the air force continues to expand, engineers cannot help but create a new plane that is distinctly Turkish. A fast moving biplane with three 8mm machine guns mounted in the nose is designed, known as the T.25-A, nicknamed the “Scorpion”. The Scorpion is outclassed by new designs, but it is so much cheaper to produce, and does great work as a scout aircraft - Turkey continues to borrow ideas from other nations, and introduces legislation requiring the implementation of assembly line production. Almost overnight, consumer goods factories begin to double or even triple their production, and a huge number of workers are hired to fill in the gaps

- The United Kingdom, Canada and the British Caribbean possessions join the American Trade and Economic Security Agreement. British steel and coal flows freely through the Caribbean, which is greatly appreciated by the small states like San Domingo and Cuba - British railway companies begin working within the new Republic of Persia in hopes of keeping a strong influence in the country. In return for weaponry, food and other industrial goods, these companies request that most of the employees remain Persian while the managers and business owners are British - Britain begins expanding its Indian railways into Afghanistan after an agreement is struck with the Shah. These railways are uncomfortably close to the Soviet border, and it is not uncommon for Soviet border troops to be seen observing the construction of these railroads - To continue the tradition, George V moves to have the Imperial Conference held every May, in which delegates from the dominions and colonies can meet in London and discuss British policies. The observers in parliament from the colonies are invited to these meetings. Insofar, no major decisions are made and the empire continues to support the status quo - Railways in Africa undergo massive expansion as the British follow the French demands to see nearly a doubling of rail lines in Africa by 1928. All existing rails are brought up to European standard, and cities like Jerusalem, Cairo and Baghdad are slowly linked together with a huge railway system - The British government begins to subsidies the automotive industry, encouraging British citizens to purchase and drive cars. Automobile companies also begin producing busses, and for a short fee, pedestrians can enjoy a ride to work. The subsidies are chump change for larger companies like Bentley, but any extra cash is appreciated - The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) is slowly absorbed by the British government, who hope to make it a national broadcasting service by the end of 1927. With this, the British government commissions companies to begin laying down hundreds of miles of telephone lines and radio masts across the British isles - Britain officially recognizes the ability for women to vote and enacts women’s suffrage. The conservatives and reactionaries in parliament are outraged, but Labour’s majority ensures that nothing can halt the bill. Women across Britain rejoice, and ready themselves for the next election cycle - “Khanas”, or Houses of Worship from the Mughal era, are constructed in major cities throughout the Raj. These secular institutions encourage local religious leaders to come together and discuss theology, philosophy, poetry and a whole manner of intellectual ideals. For the first few months, it is difficult to get the Hindu and Muslim leaders together, but some success is made in Bombay and Calcutta - Continuing to work with the new engine models, R.J. Mitchell unveils a twin-engine biplane that uses propellers and engines mounted on the wings rather than the body. This allows for much larger aircraft, and a much heavier payload. Though still stressed canvas and wood, the Model 1 Heavy Flier, or “Walrus” as it is aptly nicknamed, is a major breakthrough in regards to aeronautical engineering - R.J. Mitchell also works on the smaller side. Using a cut down version of the new engine, the Mk.I “Yellowjacket” is born. On its body are two Vickers machine guns that work with an interrupter gear. What makes the Yellowjacket a unique military aircraft is that it is a fast moving, and to an extent reliable, monoplane. Though it has a smaller fuel capacity due to its size, and does not turn as quickly as a biplane, the Yellowjacket is incredibly fast

- The United States and Canada sign the American Mutual Defense Treaty after some short deliberations in Washington. This treaty officially ties the independence of both the United States and Canada together, in which both will mutually support one another in the event of a defensive war. Canada stresses that this is limited to outright declarations of war on Canada or the United States, and aggressive wars cannot trigger Article 1 of the treaty - The Federal Bureau of Investigation tries desperately to stamp out the Klan, but has discovered that many active members of the KKK have moved to states like New York and New Jersey to escape the FBI. There are reports of mutual alcohol smuggling between the Klan and the Italian mob, but it is so far unfounded - The FBI moves to pursue communists and anarchists after three suspected Klansmen are lynched by the “People’s Protection Committee”, a radical leftist movement formed to defend the rights of poor Americans, white and black. The PPC is hounded by the FBI, and a handful of members are arrested after a sting operation in Columbus, Ohio - A survey is sent to all taxpaying residents of the United States. Within this survey, the US government anonymously asks the opinions of people on issues such as prohibition, workers rights, gun ownership and taxation. Unsurprisingly, the topic of gun ownership and taxation is the same almost across the board; more guns, less taxes. However, what surprises the government the most, is that many people’s views on prohibition have changed, especially those living in regions affected by the mafia, and are instead against the decision - After some short deliberation between the Republicans and Progressives, the American Work Protection Act is put forward. The AWPA outlines changes to the rights for workers, and demands that all companies cease discriminatory policies based on employee age, social and economic status. “At-Will” employment also comes under attack, and the bill requires all employers to give a 10 day notice before terminating a worker’s position. The Democrats are unable to block its passing, and President Coolidge signs it into law. Workers groups in America rejoice - Coolidge introduces the American Collegiate Work Program, or ACWP. Students earning a high grade point average are eligible to partake in research at government facilities, such as agriculture, medicine, engineering and meteorology. These students are given a small stipend by the US government to keep them at these jobs, and only the best and brightest are recruited - Coolidge works with the Progressives in Congress to push through the Anti-Corruption Defense Act. After more and more officers in the New York and Chicago police departments are charged with aiding the various crime organizations, the US government feels it is appropriate to encourage the “rooting-out” of corruption. All employees of either the federal, state, county or city government, ranging from police officers to desk clerks, are to be given the maximum sentence if charged with a crime. This comes alongside a newly introduced charge of “Corruption of Assets”, which carries a 10 year sentence and is considered a felony. If a police officer is found guilty of assisting the illegal distribution of alcohol, a further 10 years is added to his sentence due to his inability to keep to his oath - The ACDA is rushed through both houses, as it is nearly impossible for even the most anti-Progressive congressman to say that they are “pro-corruption”. This is the third victory for Coolidge in only a year of being in office, and approval ratings for the former vice president are through the roof - The island of Guam undergoes a small scale fortification project. A ring of 100mm guns are erected within concrete emplacements, and the beaches are lined with barbed wire in the event of an attempted naval landing. Who, exactly, America is attempting to defend themselves from is currently unknown, but Guam is now a fortress in the ocean - At Curtiss, the US Army commissioned the creation of a new airplane capable of engaging the enemy. Thus, the P-1 Hawk is born. Carrying twin Browning 1919 machine guns, the P-1 Hawk is a fast moving, quick-turning biplane that would have been the envy of the Great War had it arrived at that time - A handful of German-American restaurant owners in Chicago, Illinois begin serving a peculiar kind of sandwich. Between two dense rolls, a beef patty is served with a “crown” of melted cheese, pickles, tomatoes and lettuce. These “Cheeseburgers” are incredibly popular, due to their cheap ingredients and easily varied recipes. Doctors propose that the Cheeseburger is the “best possible meal for children” due to its high protein content and “energy giving capabilities” - American Safety Razor Company unveils its newest product. Known as the “Buzzer”, this handheld device, when plugged into a socket, moves two small razor blades in a cutting motion. The Buzzer can cut through hair with ease, and leaves a clean cut every time. Guaranteed™

- In a move that surprises many, Soviet and Japanese diplomats agree to finalize the border in Sakhalin. Japan will remove all military and civilian presence, and give Sakhalin over to the Soviets in its entirety. In return, the Soviets promise to take a hands-off approach to China, and will not intervene in the “warlord era” - In return for massive amounts of steel to continue the creation of the multi-state railway, the Turkish government agrees to export tea to the Soviet Union. The Soviets welcome these ideologically similar expats with open arms - The Bukharan and Khorezm republics are officially folded into the Soviet Union as semi-autonomous SSRs. These regions will not be forced to meet conscription quotas, but are instead ordered to produce 25% more consumer goods than other SSRs. Seeing this as a fair tradeoff, the republics are annexed - Conscripts are given an opportunity to join a Рабочая Aрмия (Rabochaya Armiya) [Labor Army], where these would-be soldiers act as civil servants or mobilized factory workers for the two years they would be serving as a soldier. Roughly a quarter of conscripts choose to join a labor army, while those that remain in the armed forces have much more dedication to the cause - Dedicated agricultural and industrial schools are formed throughout rural areas. These schools offer education on land management and more complex mechanical engineering, and allow the more agriculturally minded people of the Soviet Union to go to school and benefit the nation - Industrial parks across the country are expanded now that they have been raised to a more modern standard. However, the expansion is slow and methodical, as to avoid a total dissolution of efficiency. This helps grow the Soviet economy significantly, and the USSR’s industrial capacity slowly starts to catch up with nations like America, Britain and France - Mechanization of agriculture is demanded by the Soviet government, who offers petroleum subsidies to farmers. Thanks to newfound fertilizer recipes, harvests in the Soviet Union begin to even out, and risks of starvation may soon be left in the proverbial rear view mirror - The Soviet army undergoes a massive training exercise in central Russia with over 50,000 troops involved. These huge drills are to teach the Soviet soldier about “deep defense”, and the idea of a constantly shifting frontline. These exercises also prove that a policy of self sacrifice quickly leads to enormous casualties, and Soviet tactics are given a once-over by high command - General Tukhachevsky forms the Национальная Гвардия (Natsional'naya Gvardiya) [National Guard], which acts as a nationwide gendarme, and absorbs the NKVD, which still acts as a militarized wing of the Soviet government. The NG and NKVD are rigorously trained and forced to meet incredibly high standards. Many wash out, but those that stay are some of the hardest soldiers the USSR has to offer - Researchers at the University of Leningrad introduce a new form of biological study. Nicknamed “Dietary Science”, these students study the effects of various diets on people’s physique, mental status, and the economy. Currently, a high protein and high carbohydrate diet is found to be the most effective for long term stability of a person - Electrical engineers at the same university unveil a major step forward in their field. Known as a “Pentode”, this 5 electrode-bearing vacuum tube is a huge advancement, and could lead to major breakthroughs in regards to tabulation machines
Currently, a high protein and high carbohydrate diet is found to be the most effective for long term stability of a person

- A handful of German-American restaurant owners in Chicago, Illinois begin serving a peculiar kind of sandwich. Between two dense rolls, a beef patty is served with a “crown” of melted cheese, pickles, tomatoes and lettuce. These “Cheeseburgers” are incredibly popular, due to their cheap ingredients and easily varied recipes. Doctors propose that the Cheeseburger is the “best possible meal for children” due to its high protein content and “energy giving capabilities”

June 3rd, 1926
In the city of Tbilisi, capital of the Georgian SSR, Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin, former member of the Soviet congress and competitor to Leon Trotsky, takes a relaxing drive after meeting with a supposed turncoat against Trotsky. It is unbeknownst to Stalin that the turncoat was in fact a double agent, acting as the eyes and ears of the Trotsky regime to try and root out Stalin and his associates. That spy relays the information to a group of NKVD operatives, who quickly get in cars of their own. Roughly a mile or so outside of the center of the city, Stalin’s car is suddenly “boxed in” by two automobiles and run off the road, skidding into a ditch. Stalin’s bodyguard throws himself over his leader, and opens fire on the two cars. The driver of Stalin’s car leaps out and draws a revolver, and is killed in a hail of bullets. The bodyguard takes two shots to the face and slumps dead over Stalin. The assassins take no time in waiting for Stalin to show himself. Seven men exit the cars and riddle the ride with bullets. For two minutes, the car is eviscerated by gunfire, before finally being doused in gasoline and set alight. One car of assassins leave, while the other sits and waits for the car to finish burning. After two hours, the flames die out, and upon inspection, three charred bodies poked full of holes lay in the smoldering ruins. Joseph Stalin is dead. The instant Trotsky hears the news, the NKVD is ordered to sweep across the Soviet Union and arrest any and all of Stalin’s associates. They are dragged from their homes and shot on site, their families exiled and their assets seized by the government. Word of Stalin’s death spreads quickly through the Soviet Union, but any dissenters remain quiet. Despite the efforts of the propaganda ministry, it proves futile to cover up Stalin’s death, and the government is instead forced to spin it as a positive. Now, Leon Trotsky stands unopposed as General Secretary of the Soviet Union. His naysayers are silent, his challengers dead. Nothing stands in Trotsky’s way.
These skirmishes rapidly dissolve into outright fighting, and the Anhui Clique declares war on the Fengtian Clique. Meanwhile, Manchu nationalists rise up against Zheng’s father, Zhang Zuolin. The conflict causes an outright cascade of violence, in which all factions are placed against one another. Mongolia, Xinjiang and Tibet are the only ones able to escape the conflict - British troops enter Saudi territory to “pacify” the Arabian peninsula. Initially, the British are successful, but as time goes on, the troops begin to suffer from attrition thanks to the desert environment, and are forced to put Riyadh to siege. Guerilla tactics make mincemeat of supply lines, and the British take unexpected losses. Nonetheless, by the end of next year, Britain may soon have near total control over the Arab world - Fascist groups in Czechoslovakia begin organizing in Bratislava and Prague. Slovak fascists begin pushing for an autonomous, self-governing “Slovakia for Slovaks”, while the Czech fascists begin proposing a “Pan-Slavic Fascist Republic”. These groups are met with police forces when protesting, and it only helps fuel the flames of dissent amongst the populace - Communists take to the streets in Romania demanding the rights of workers and farmers be upheld in future legislation. The Asociația Fermierilor din România (Association of Romanian Farmers) leads the charge, pushing hard against deregulation and private control. The AFR is growing in popularity in eastern Romania, and has now moved to include factory workers. Romanian police regularly crack down on these protests. Hard - German nationalists begin marching in massed protests in areas occupied by France. These protests demand that the French exit German territories altogether, and that the Entente reduce the economic strain placed on Germany. These protests are met with police and military resistance, and violent riots begin as protests get out of hand. Some in France question the worth of continued occupation of Germany - The price of oil begins to drop as expeditions in Iraq and South Arabia prove fruitful for Turkey and the United Kingdom. Many industry leaders are anxious to get their hands on the black gold once it begins flowing at the beginning of next year. The conflict in Arabia has sparked fears in nations like Iran over their purpose in the western world - Tobacco becomes increasingly popular throughout the world. Doctors recommend that cigarettes be consumed as they “generally improve everyday life”. This update sponsored by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Try a Lucky Strike, It’s Toasted®
--
- President Coolidge denounces the actions taken by the French in the Saarland, stating that the crackdown on the nationalists was “Barbaric and out of control”. This declaration is considered an insult by the French embassy, who petition the French government to respond - Two French divisions are shipped to Czechoslovakia to monitor the internal and external borders of the country. With fascists on the rise in Slovakia, and Communists in Romania, the French hope to secure the delicate balance in this region, or risk Poland being overrun - Miguel Primo de Rivera, the premier of Spain, is ordered by the French to continue parliamentary actions and “cease this foolish dictatorial posturing, or risk a total collapse of relations with France.” As threatening as this demand is, Rivera takes his chances, and refuses to follow France’s orders - Fascism is officially declared an “Anti-Democratic and Anti-Republican” stance in French law. Fascist and nationalist parties are banned from participating in politics, and rallies for the parties are to be broken up by police. Party leaders are given 72 hours from the announcement to disband their associations, or risk exile to Madagascar - Taxes are raised on luxury goods such as coffee, silk, radios and automobiles. This comes alongside a new tax reform put in place by Doumergue, which focuses on slightly higher taxes on the middle class, and much higher taxes on the rich, as well as tariffs raised on items brought in from the colonies. The general public is unhappy with the reforms, but economists predict positive effects over the coming years - The French government seeks to begin subsidizing the production of radios and telecommunications throughout the homeland. Telephone lines and radio towers spring up across the country, even in rural areas, as the cash injection from raised taxes finally allows for subsidies backed by more than words - Colonial forces acting as anti-partisan units in Africa are moved to the Rhineland to replace French divisions. These troops, with no connection to France or even Europe, are used to hunt down armed German nationalists. Those that resist violently are captured and brought to tribunals, in which the guilty are sent to languish in prisons far off in Aquitaine or Tunisia - German nationalists begin marching in massed protests in areas occupied by France. These protests demand that the French exit German territories altogether, and that the Entente reduce the economic strain placed on Germany. These protests are met with police and military resistance, and violent riots begin as protests get out of hand. Some in France question the worth of continued occupation of Germany - Protesters that peacefully surrender themselves during police actions are given amnesty and allowed to return home, though occupying forces are keeping a tab on those that seek to return to the nationalist movement. The use of colonial troops goes swimmingly, though it downright infuriates the German population in occupied territories - The Painlevé Line sees a second expansion, this time snaking along the Italian and Belgian borders. This line is much thinner and less protective than the main line, and is to be used as a “stop-gap” in the event of a war. Belgium’s government is reassured, as the French declare a guarantee of Belgian independence, and the tiny nation is folded into the Entente - Via the use of modified F.140 bombers, the French military tests the use of parachutes, similar to those made by American parachutist Albert Berry. On the side of the bomber, up to 10 soldiers can be dropped onto a position with somewhat reliable parachutes. These infantry must travel lightly to ensure a safe trip down, and are armed exclusively with submachine guns and little to no extra equipment. These “Paratroopers” are an interesting gimmick, but so far show no immediate use - French military engineers begin toying with the idea of dedicated “landing craft”. Using a modified motorboat, these craft are surrounded with thin steel plates to prevent shrapnel from striking the crew, and a curved “ramp” that can be dropped by the driver. After a few tests, the decided upon design, dubbed the L.1, can carry a squad of 12 soldiers at a sustained speed of 8km/h - Using an electrical charge, French electrical engineers have managed to create electrically-driven drills and hammers that can be carried by an individual. Though the tools are attached to an obnoxiously long and heavy cord, a single person can do the job of five in only half the time with these new designs

- German automobile manufacturers continue to see an influx of subsidies for the Volksauto 2 and 3. Over the course of a few months, the two cars are sold in central America, and even parts of India and China. The cars have yet to catch on in Britain or France, but money is money, and car salesmen tend not to be picky - The German diet approves the formation of the Volkstrat, or councils of politically neutral experts that focus on areas such as agriculture, education, engineering and health. These groups oversee legislation and give input on future choices regarding those areas. Some radicals believe that this is a step towards German technocracy, but there is little evidence supporting it - To combat both crime and growing extremism, the German government forms the Interne Sicherheitsgruppe (ISG), which act incredibly similar to the American FBI. The ISG has authority over local precincts, and can pursue crimes that move over state lines. The ISG is fiercely trained and to an extent apolitical, and is the direct result of years of military hardening - Public works in Germany continue as the Autobahn grows rapidly in size. This is paired with a new railway program, in which most major cities in Germany will be tied together with European Standard gauge rail lines. Thousands of kilometers of asphalt and tracks are laid down by the end of 1926 - Germany begins to shake off the effects of the post-war depression and take its first breaths of recovery. The GDP begins to slowly climb back up to nominal levels, and wages have stabilized over the past two years. The German budget can now focus on paying back the enormous debts it owes the victorious powers of the Great War - Politically, however, Germany is stumbling. Despite bans on the communist and nationalist parties, only the most extreme of those groups have managed to be arrested or barred from office. A reformed NSDAP, under the leadership of Ernst Röhm, has retitled itself the Deutsche Nationale Reformpartei (German National Reform Party), and takes to the streets. The DNR manages to skirt regulations on extremism, as these marches call for “political action” rather than violence - Military exercises finally begin to wind down, and many troops are sent home for rest. Data regarding the movement of troops and close quarters combat is collected and studied. At the few remaining military academies in Germany, discussions begin over the possible reorganization of the German military into multiple, smaller, more cohesive armies rather than one or two massive fronts - At the Technical University of Munich, electronics engineers begin toying with radio designs that are strikingly similar to those in Japan. These radios are somewhat less powerful, but are smaller and purpose-built to be placed in the back of a truck or tractor. German industry is unable to produce them in large quantities, but they prove to be much more reliable than Japanese designs, and their applications seem obvious - Engineers at Blohm and Voss, though shipbuilders by trade, create the BV-10. The BV-10 is a fast moving, reliable monoplane built for agricultural purposes, such as crop dusting and land surveying. The BV-10 is similar to the British Yellowjacket, but instead uses a more bulky engine, thus causing it to be bigger in size

- Italian influence in San Marino is absolute as Italian forces install Giuliano Gozi as the leader of the newly formed Most Serene Fascist Republic of San Marino. Mussolini’s ambitions manage to rope the Free State of Fiume into Italy’s clutches, and both small territories are made protectorates of the Italian Empire - Italy pulls Albania closer to itself, and forms the “Mediterranean Pact”. With the Balkan Defensive Pact acting as a competitive alliance to Italy, Mussolini is unwilling to give any territory to “pitiful traitors”. Italy revokes its guarantee of independence for Yugoslavia and Romania, and instead only keeps the guarantees of Czechoslovakia and Poland, thus remaining as an observing member of the Entente - A division of Italian soldiers, alongside its officers, arrive in Ethiopia to begin training the small nation’s military. This is a long and arduous process, as the Ethiopian army is a rag-tag collection of militiamen, many of whom are lacking modern equipment. Nonetheless, the Italian Empire seeks to make friends in their colonial neighbor, as well as defend them from outside attacks - Pope Pius XI meets with Mussolini in regards to the authority of the Papacy and the status of the Vatican. After short deliberation, Mussolini agrees to allow the Vatican city to secede from Italy and become an independent city state free of foreign influence. Of course, the Vatican is economically and agriculturally dependent upon Italy - The National Fascist Party begins sending its tendrils into Libya, Eritrea and Somalia to begin fostering local branches. Preaching ideas of racial and social equality, these parties gain significant popularity amongst the middle classes in the colonies. Many locals begin proposing sending some party members to Rome to discuss colonial policy - Suffrage is made universal throughout the mainland of the Italian Empire. All citizens aged 18 and older are allowed to participate in elections across the board. Of course, the only legal candidates are members of the fascist party, and voters are essentially only allowed to vote between their preferred flavor of fascism - The Italian government begins nationalization of businesses and industries. Areas of the economy once owned by large businesses are either liquidated or acquired by the Italian government, who then distributes assets of the company amongst financial leaders. Most of Italy’s industries are expected to be nationalized by the end of 1928 - Police officers and members of the national police are reorganized and conglomerated into the Carabineri. These officers receive government funding and support, and in return for their services and reorganization, are officially exempt from future conscription - The Italian army and navy conduct exercises stretching from Sicily to Libya. These exercises focus on naval invasions and landings, as well as coordinating coastal attacks from the shoreline. These exercises are considered by Yugoslavian and Greek observers to be “blatant acts of aggression”, but the exercises otherwise go unnoticed - Engineers at Fiat work with models of the Fiat 4000 Lombrico, hoping to improve upon its armor and transmission. A new version of the Lombrico is born, with much thicker front armor and a much quicker transmission, allowing the tank to adjust itself faster in combat. The Fiat 4000A, also known as the Lombrico II carries the same armament, but is a significant step up from previous designs - A new machine gun is designed at Breda. The Breda Mod. 10 is a magazine-fed, single-man portable machine gun that fires the standard 6.5x52mm Carcano cartridge. What makes the Mod. 10 unique from its predecessors is the 30 round magazine that sits on top of the machine gun, similar to the Danish Madsen machine gun. The Mod. 10 has a cyclic rate of 750 RPM, and is much lighter than its counterparts

- British and Japanese scientists exchange ideas in a momentous trade, signifying the stability of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. In return for the life saving penicillin, Japan will receive a small number of working copies of the Aston Martin Badger and the Mitchell Yellowjacket, both of which are put to use in their respective areas - Emperor Taisho’s health begins to fail rapidly after being hospitalized for pneumonia. However, doctors put penicillin to good use. After a few days in the hospital, Emperor Taisho’s pneumonia clears up, and he is released to cheering crowds. Taisho has survived, and hopes to continue his reign as Emperor of Japan - Japanese hospitals in Korea are expanded. The use of penicillin is permitted, and medical efforts to assist the sick and poor are prioritized within the territories. Those that receive care are reminded that it was the Japanese that saved their lives and gave them good health - The teaching of Japanese is now permitted within Korea, as well as the taking of Japanese names by Koreans that undergo a thorough background check. Primary schools and universities are built in major cities to educate the populace, and students are put through rigorous classes to teach them the wonders of Japan and the benefits of Japanese occupation - Paved roads become a priority in the government’s budget. All city centers are required to lay down at minimum 80km of paved road, and military bases are brought up to a standard requiring at least 30km of asphalt around the base and inside, as well as paved landing strips - The vote to allow women to work in factories is passed with little resistance. Women are allowed to serve alongside men in manual labor jobs, and are entitled to wages. However, they are also given less job security and not entitled to wages higher than that of their male counterparts. Nonetheless, the number of workers in factories skyrockets, and the income for Japanese families follows suit - The army and navy undergo changes in regards to promotion. Now, promotions are only given to those who have proven their merit and tenacity in military service, rather than their birthright or time served. Aggressive officers and those willing to thrust headfirst into combat are rewarded for their efforts - Carrier commanders are now required to be part of the newly formed air wing of the navy. As the world of naval combat begins to change, surface fleet captains are simply untrained and inexperienced with the operations of a carrier. As such, the old captains are retired with honors and replaced by younger graduates from the academy - Dedicated medical and logistics brigades are folded into all non-amphibious army divisions. As the number of trucks in the Japanese military expands, these medical and logistics units are a godsend to any soldiers that are far from home. This also cuts down on the redundant lists of supply routes, and reduces the impact of railway sabotage - The two Furutaka class cruisers, christened the Furutaka and Ka, are finished and join the IJN’s growing numbers. Meanwhile, the navy orders the laying down of six Takao class heavy cruisers and four Mogami class cruisers by the end of 1929. These new ships are outfitted with high pressure, superheated steam turbines and a host of side-mounted torpedo tubes - Using a combination of inert gases and a tungsten filament, engineers at Osaka University are able to cut through and form metals of nearly all types. Though this form of "tungsten arc welding" leaves some room for improvement, and is by no means cheap, it is a massive step forward for the rapidly growing Japanese industrial machine - Electronics engineers from Osaka, Tokyo and Kyoto universities unveil what is known as 話し手 (Hanashite) [Speaker]. Using an entire room full of electrodes, vacuum tubes, mechanical bits and pieces and more, “Speaker” is able to calculate small equations via the use of turned knobs and buttons. Speaker, despite weighing multiple tons, is the first “Electromechanical computer”

- Turkey and Iran sign a formal treaty in which both nations guarantee the other’s independence. This comes as British finagling in Iranian affairs continues, and Turkey is unwilling to let the entirety of the middle east fall victim to British imperialism. British diplomats in Turkey are insulted, but their opinion doesn’t sway the internal affairs of Turkey - After intense deliberation and frustration, Turkey manages to form the “Balkan Defensive Pact” with Greece, Yugoslavia and Romania. These three nations have their independence guaranteed against Italian expansionism, and Turkey recognises the claims of Yugoslavia and Greece on territories held by Italy. However, as Yugoslavia and Romania are already in the Entente, the Balkan Defense Pact is exactly that, defensive. In the event of war, Yugoslavia, Greece and Romania promise to defend Turkey and her interests, and vice versa - With the help of assembly line production, the steel industry of Turkey begins to grow at a steady pace. Massive steelworks are built in Kastamonu and Bursa, where thousands of workers put out literal tons of steel. Turkey’s dependence on imported steel is made less and less severe - After only a short period of exploration, a huge oil field is discovered in Kirkuk and Dohuk. Immediately, Turkish engineers begin constructing a pipeline leading to the field, which connect to a rapidly constructed refinery in Ceyhan. After only a few months, Turkey begins to produce a significant amount of crude oil. This not only benefits Turkey’s industry, but if the fields prove fruitful, could possibly lead to oil exports - The İstanbul Teknik Enstitüsü (Istanbul Technical Institute) is founded in its namesake city. Completely government funded and operated, the ITE opens its doors in November of 1926, and invites hundreds of foreign experts to teach topics such as engineering, electronics, manufacturing and so on - Metric, the system of measurement used by most European countries, and the mainstay unit of measurement for the scientific world, is made the official system for Turkey. Old school measurements and units are banned, and schools are quickly ordered to adjust themselves to use metric. This is yet another step for Turkey to draw itself closer to Europe - Most, if not all, of the old Ottoman laws and regulations are phased out for a Common Law styled system. Backwards legislation in rural areas is repealed and made irrelevant. This upsets many conservative elements of the more rural and traditional population, but the authority of the Turkish state is stronger than ever, and few actually do anything in protest - In the city of Gölcük, a naval shipyard begins construction. By the end of 1927, this shipyard will be able to put ships immediately into the Sea of Marmara, greatly increasing the naval capacity of Turkey, and giving the country a significant boost in power projection - At Izmir, the Turkish government commissions the construction of an airplane factory. As the Turkish air force expands, it can only grow so fast with the small number of factories present in Turkey. Here, the cheaper, easily produced planes that are indicative of the Turkish air force are built in large numbers - Using a combination of designs from Britain and America, engineers at Yıldız Technical University propose a new truck to be used in Turkey. With three axles, this truck uses a massive engine, and can carry a large load in its bed. These trucks are expensive, and somewhat difficult to maintain, but are a must have for the growing industry in Turkey - Taking a page from the infiltration tactics of the Great War, a new armored car is designed. Using the same body as the truck, and covered in thick steel plating, the “Tosbağa” (Tortoise) is born. On the sides are two Maxim machine guns, and on the top is a rotating turret carrying two more. The Tosbağa is the perfect vehicle for urban combat and insurgency suppression, and can even carry a small number of troops if need be

- British and Japanese scientists exchange ideas in a momentous trade, signifying the stability of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. In return for the life saving penicillin, Japan will receive a small number of working copies of the Aston Martin Badger and the Mitchell Yellowjacket. Japanese penicillin saves thousands of lives in British hospitals, and is quickly considered to be a miracle of modern science - After short deliberation with the Hedjazi leadership, the United Kingdom moves to “pacify” the Arabian peninsula. In early March, British divisions stationed in Iraq, Transjordan, South Arabia and Hedjaz move in almost unilaterally to invade the territories of the Saudis. Caught entirely unaware, the Saudi resistance is minimal - By mid July, the Saudi military begins a vicious guerilla campaign to fight back against the “Infidel invaders” that “hold the holy land hostage”. Supply lines are damaged, and attrition is horrendous in the hot deserts of the Arabian peninsula. By the time the British reach Riyadh in September, losses are much higher than expected, and the war is predicted to continue in to late next year - Horrified by the actions of the British, the Iranians mobilize their armies as a response. In an attempt to soothe Iranian fears, the British propose the transfer of the islands of Abu Musa, as well as linked railways between Iran and India. The Iranians refuse, and nearly defenestrate the British delegation - Afghanistan, however, accepts the British proposal of linked infrastructure, as the agrarian mountain country has no access to the ocean, and is entirely dependent on overland trade. British nationalists demand that Iran be “punished for their insolence”, but these words are stymied in parliament to prevent further military adventures - As the war in China begins, British diplomats attempt to secure deals with the various warlords. The only one that accepts the offer is the Republic of China, who requests three simple things: Guns, ammunition and food. The British are more than happy to oblige, and begin transferring the goods immediately - Some more liberal members in parliament begin floating the idea of “federalisation”. The idea is rejected by most, if not all, conservatives. Some in the colonial labor parties are interested in the idea, but conservative colonial leaders are abhorred by the idea and are infuriated. It will take some time for the idea to gain traction, but it is now a talking point - In Egypt and the Sudan, the British government orders the construction of further “Khanas”. With the Shiite, Sunni, Jewish and Christian communities still somewhat hostile to one another throughout Britain's African and Arabian colonies, some believe that areas for open discussion could soothe some of these tensions. Little happens at first, but once again, the idea is out there - Massive oil fields are discovered in southern Iraq and South Arabia. Immediately, British oil engineers begin constructing pipelines and refineries to take advantage of this “black gold”. As Britain’s demand for oil grows stronger day by day, and her fleet begins to increase in size, every barrel counts, and Arabia appears to be the center of it all - The Royal Navy demands that the merchant fleet be expanded once again in hopes of creating a world-spanning economic force “unseen since before the Great War”. The merchant fleet was crippled by German submarine attacks, and a great effort must be taken to bring it back to its former glory - At home, schooling is made mandatory until 16 years of age. This act gives a two pronged approach to improving everyday life in Britain; firstly, children will be kept out of factories and other jobs and be allowed to focus on their education, and secondly, will be kept out of gangs and other nefarious groups - Public schooling is also made mandatory in a number of colonies, mainly small regions of India and Africa. Here, all children must receive education from ages 6 to 12. This is an incredibly expensive and complex undertaking, but the ends justify the means, and the British hope to expand this policy of education to all colonies in Britain - Airfields begin construction in Egypt, Nigeria, Iraq and throughout the Raj. As air power becomes a significant advantage in the new world of warfare, it is asinine to let oneself be left behind. Local labor is used to create these airfields, and the Royal Air Force takes full advantage of these new strips - Two aircraft carriers, five heavy cruisers and a whopping 18 destroyers begin construction at British naval yards. All ships are expected to be seaworthy by 1928, and will add a significant number of ships to the Royal Navy. By the end of the decade, Britain’s fleet will be the largest in the world, save for the Japanese, who are quickly becoming a close competitor - Engineers in Egypt begin toying with “drip” irrigation. An old idea, but now with the availability of rubber hoses, this new “drip” design allows for water parched areas to grow small garden farms, for plants such as tomatoes, eggplant and beans. This alleviates pressure of water on areas such as Sudan and Balochistan - Working with the twin engine design built in the previous year, engineers at Handley Page Aircraft fly their newest design, known as the Handley Page “Oxford”. This twin-engine biplane is enormous, and can carry up to 1500kg (3300lb) of bombs. Its defensive armament is a tail mounted Lewis Gun. The Oxford is truly a “heavy bomber” that could reach out and touch enemy positions hundreds of kilometers away

- President Coolidge denounces the actions taken by the French in the Saarland, stating that the crackdown on the nationalists was “Barbaric and out of control”. This declaration is considered an insult by the French embassy, who petition the French government to respond - The Office of Financial Exchanges and Security’s powers are expanded by a bill passed through both houses. Now, the OFES has the power to investigate bank fraud and monitor stock market changes, and can call upon the FBI to intervene on its behalf. OFES agents are regularly seen working with the IRS to crack down on tax fraud - The FBI begins a nationwide sweep, going after the mafia and other organized crime, as well as the Klan. Undercover agents spring on the ones they’re inserted into, and hundreds are arrested in Chicago and New York on a menagerie of charges. The Klan, however, has become a totally different animal, and is believed to have radicalized beyond expectations. Undercover agents are revealed and found dead. It is unknown as to who had leaked the information to the Klan - The 21st Amendment, one that outright repeals the 18th, is ratified. Prohibition has officially come to an end in the United States. In a surprising move, Coolidge orders full amnesty for all prisoners charged with alcohol related crimes, so long as they are not affiliated with organized crime. Those that sell liquor must now be approved by local governments, and a 15% tax is levied on all sales of alcohol. The celebration is nationwide, and distilleries start humming to life once again - American engineering students are given the opportunity to work with the US government, and even the Department of War, if their designs prove fruitful. Only a handful of these engineers are given grants, so the competition is fierce and produces only the best of the best - Both houses approve and pass the Railway Labor Act. Unions are now able to demand a call for negotiations, rather than allow business owners to kick the can down the road and delay commerce even further. The act is appreciated amongst the working class, but big business moguls are infuriated and demand that the act be reviewed - Mt. Rushmore begins its massive project of being carved. The monument is set to display the faces of former presidents, including Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt. Thousands of workers begin chipping away at the visage of these historical figures, and the project is set to be completed by the summer of 1937 if all goes according to plan - The US Army begins trials of a modified Springfield M1903 rifle. Using a shorter overall rifle, and an SMLE-styled bolt, the US Army unveils the Springfield M1903A1 Carbine. Shorter than its predecessor, the M1903A1 uses a modified cartridge of 7.5x45mm Government, rather than 7.62x63, or “.30-06” - General Electric unveils its first “mobile radio” for American automobile manufacturers. Cementing the radio in the center console, drivers are now able to enjoy broadcasts while “on the go”. These radios are also incredibly expensive, fragile, and stupendously unreliable, but are nonetheless a hot seller - At MIT, with the help of Vannevar Bush, tests on a “Differential Analyser” take place. This massive mechanical object uses knobs and gears to calculate differential equations. The process is slow, but is much faster than the human brain. America’s first successful “analogue computer” is born

- The Soviet government begins laying down the groundwork for a downright massive project in and around the Ural mountains. Vast veins of precious ores and other natural resources have been discovered, and Trotsky moves to include a gigantic mining project as part of a 5 year plan. Nearly 10,000 workers are mobilized to begin the construction of what may soon be the world’s largest set of mines - Near the Urals and in the surrounding area, massive steelworks, oil refineries and mineral processing plants begin construction with those in the Labor Armies. These facilities are built exclusively to harness the resources pulled out of the mines in the Urals, and will provide the Soviet economy with a ludicrous amount of processed goods - Workers that are set to work in these areas are forcibly relocated by the Soviet government. However, they are able to bring their families, and large Рабочие Города (Rabochiye Goroda) [Worker Cities] are constructed. These small villages have only the basic amenities for workers, and are not given names, but instead numbers. They are bleak and uninteresting, but such a sacrifice is needed to benefit the motherland - The electronics sector receives a massive amount of funding from the Soviet government. In order to better provide news on the nation, as well as encourage the populace with propaganda, “Communal” radios are produced by the hundreds in electronics factories. These radios are to be built into apartment buildings, factories and train stations, and will broadcast recordings of the Red Army Choir, news reports, and stories approved by the Soviet government - In order to crack down on “Anti-Revolutionary Dissidents”, the Soviet army declares a state of martial law throughout the Soviet Union. Curfews are in place, and thousands are arrested and interrogated to try and find the ultimate threat to Soviet stability: Stalin - Joseph Stalin is found taking a car ride in Tbilisi after meeting with an undercover operative planted by Trotsky. Stalin’s car is tracked down and run off the road. Before the driver and the guard can move to protect Stalin, the three are killed in a hail of gunfire. The car is set alight, and Stalin’s body is burnt to a crisp. Trotsky’s hold on the Soviet Union is now unchallenged - Seeing the inclusion of Poland in the Entente as a threat, the Soviet army moves its exercises into Belarus and Ukraine. These exercises are doubled in size, and now flagrantly focus on offensive maneuvers. This is paired with the project to “modernise” the Soviet infantryman by improving their uniform, weaponry and equipment. This project will last at the very least two years, and will eventually be moved to other areas of the military - Engineers working at AMO begin working on a new model of howitzer. Rather than the massive guns of the Great War that could lob shells a dozen miles, the AMO-75 is a “compact” howitzer. Firing a 75mm shell, this howitzer is lighter, and sacrifices range for rapid fire. The AMO-75 is cheap to produce, and is a great tool in laying down precise artillery fire in a short period of time - The Soviet navy recalls the light Chervona Ukraina and completely slashes her deck to a flat surface. Mimicking British designs, the Chervona Ukraina is set to be an “Escort” carrier by the summer of 1928. Rather than have the carrier be the core of the fleet, these fast moving escorts carry reconnaissance and short-range bombers to support naval operations. In the Baltic and Black Sea, such a design is a massive advantage
Flashpoint! The German Uprising
After years of French occupation, the German populace in the Rhineland has had its fill of foreign troops marching up and down their streets. The revolt in 1925 was only the beginning. After the “Martyrs of the Saar” were put to death by French forces, groups of underground resistance had begun to rapidly grow out of control. Seizing weapons from French magazines, German surplus, sent from sympathisers overseas or built in a garage, a number of these resistance forces are more than ready to lash out at the French and any other “Illegal occupant of German lands”. These groups vary widely in their affiliation and methods of warfare.

Kriegsvolk Front The Kriegsvolk Front, or literally “War People's Front”, is a right-wing nationalist group that is made up of those responsible for the 1925 revolt in the Saarland. Their numbers are much smaller than before after the introduction of anti-partisan units in France, but their lack of numbers is made up for in tenacity. The goal of the Kriegsvolk Front is to return western Germany to its 1914 borders, including Alsace-Lorraine, and demand an end to reparations owed by Germany.

Volksfreiheit Front von Deutschland The Volksfreiheit Front von Deutschland, or People’s Freedom Front for Germany, is a far left radical group formed in the months after the Saarland revolt. Much of the group’s members adhere to a radicalised form of Marxist-Leninist thought, and use this to their advantage. Farmers and factory workers, no matter their conditions, find themselves drawn to the VFD due to their pro-worker rhetoric. The goal of the VFD is to not only free the occupied Rhineland from France, but to actually establish a “Democratic People’s Republic of the Rhineland” as an independent entity in Europe.

Demokratische Union Front The Demokratische Union Front is unique from the other groups in that it is not out-and-out militant at all. The DUF does not partake in violent attacks on soldiers, per-se, but instead ruins railways, cuts power lines, spoils food and causes general mayhem for the occupiers. The DUF is popular amongst the more peace-oriented separatists, but its structure is incredibly weak, and relies mainly on harassment rather than revolt. The goal of the DUF is to return territories east of Alsace-Lorraine to Germany and see a demilitarized Rhineland, in which no troops can enter until 1935.
The nations of the world must stop and take a look at the situation. France cannot handle this alone without others noticing, and the strain on Europe is becoming noticeable. Will a change take place? Or will the status remain quo? Only time will tell.

Vote by declaring in the thread Note: Votes are not binding, they are merely nation’s suggestions as to what another nation should do.
The Soviet Union fully supports the establishment of a free and independent Rhineland DPR
P.S.: Votes are due Sunday
The United States withholds any vote or participation in this event.
Abstination, the Empire supports the creation of an independent Rhineland under local non-radical leaders such as the current mayor of Köln Konrad Adenauer instead of an independent under a radical Spartacist movement.
Japan abstains from voting on the situation
It is unfortunate these events should transpire while France and her longtime ally Great Britain were approaching a negotiated solution with Germany. This will be resolved soon, and the working conclusion is most similar to option four (subject to minor variations). Those who support such a settlement should cease provocative actions that could prevent its success, and those who are distant from the situation should not be so quick to assign blame for these misfortunes when they are under informed.
While the United Kingdom is dismayed over the recent violence that has occurred in the Rhine region, and the following attempt of demagogues to carve the region up to their liking; His majesty's government is steadfast in our friendship and alliance with France and thus will back whatever decision our comrades across the channel decide upon. With this in mind, The United Kingdom announces its continual support for the trilateral assembly of France, Germany, and the UK on the matter and what is in essence the approval and support for option 4.
Whilst the Federal Government of Germany can applaud the civilians for their ability to stand up against those occupying what is rightfully German territory, we cannot condone the demagogues vying for power in the region and attempting to wrest control for their own personal gain to the detriment of all who live there. Thusly, the Reichstag is to show its support for the fourth option in addition to currently ongoing talks with the French and British, in order to figure a solution to this impasse. We will ensure that within the Rhineland back under German legislation, people from all walks of life will once again prosper.
I awaken. The flashpoint will be edited and the results made public probably this evening. You will be receiving espionage around the same time so you may need to make edits if needed. Edit issues regarding Mosul/Kirkuk and Japanese cruiser names will be addressed soon

Flashpoint Resolution
As many world powers choose to abstain from voting on the issues of the French occupation of the Rhineland, the British, French and German delegations have reached an agreement.
1. French troops will withdraw from the Rhineland and Saarland over the course of 1927, and shall have exited the territory in its entirety by the end of 1929 and no later. 2. For every French unit withdrawn, the German government must provide armed police in equal number to preserve order for a period of six months. 3. The Rhineland shall remain demilitarized until 1939, and no troops nor fortifications can be placed until said date. However, meetings can be held to move the date forward if appropriate. 4. Reparations on Germany are not removed, but quotas and timetables regarding exports are relaxed significantly and open to negotiation. 5. Territorial claims against any/all current Entente members and dependencies made by Germany are to be renounced, including Gdansk and Memel. 6. Germany is authorized to increase the size of the Reichswehr to 200,000 standing troops. 7. Germany must ban the Kriegsvolk Front and Volksfreiheit Front and bar their members from taking part in political activities.
After intense deliberation, all delegations agreed to the deal, and the Rhineland Accord of 1926 has been signed. The KF and VF are infuriated and vow to “seek revenge against the submissive German government”, but are otherwise silent. Europe breathes easy now that a point of contention is settled, and the populace of Germany rejoices.
