I'm trying to grow East Spawn now, and I've filled a rather awkward vacant lot with the brown building you can see here in this obligatory artsy screencap of Spawn:

Some really cool foundry/industrial stuff in auxillary pictures atm. Go for something like that. With a piston gate which pours lava onto a slag pile with netherrack built in for constant smoke/fire. Use grey/black carpets to simulate a thick layer of coal dust on the surface. Grey glass on the chimney like thick clouds of smog.
Where abouts is this auto smelter?
Isn't it on the plateau where the airport was going to be?

Which my opinion here is the plot is kind of awkward but it can be done. Building it anywhere else, we'd have to raze a lot of stuff.

Maybe put it the place that I have marked for hangars? The two bridges meet over there. Or it could go over by the sandstone building (factory?) that's in the corner.
The design is kind of constrained because the air traffic control tower needs to go on the point where there's the most visibility. (Or we could raze the mountain for more space but that's kind of gross imo. I have always liked that mountain.)

If not, it's around that area and not too hard to find. I don't really have current plans to revisit the mine, but I might save the coordinates just so I know where it is.

Oh, OK. I would probably just leave it alone or build a shack over it. I don't really like demolishing stuff in general.
