starting construction on stuff in the old town:

not the best, but it's intended to be experimental pretty much - in traditional and organic designs

it's taking place (roughly) within these red borders (purple borders will have a park or something), although that's mostly a guideline. i encourage people to come build stuff in a variety of styles (or whatever takes your fancy really)
infrastructure will be largely organic and expanded as we need it (rather than in advance), plus there's nothing really stopping you from sticking in little underground alleys, chambers, basements, crypts, etc
mostly been inspired by this sort of stuff - the kinds of cities that were built prior to the industrial revolution and aren't dreadful modernist messes

i invite all to come and build pretty much anything (gardens, shops, cafes, schools, houses, hotels, banks, monuments, etc) that features in a normal city
try to experiment and be creative - make tall rickety houses or dig underground or put overhangs in or build over the railway and (with some permission from the owner) even utilise somebody elses build to enhance your own
-also don't flatten out big areas, i'll fill it back in if you do
This is great; I was gonna make a subway going East-West and now I have somewhere to terminate it :v:
I just have two requests:
Can we call it old city?
and
Can the street names have their own theme? Currently the ones in Spawn are numbered or named after cities on the old server but it'd be cool to name these streets all after trees or something like that.
I just ask that, where it makes sense, they're linked up with existing roads and road names.

themes and streets will develop over time, so no idea of that yet
i'm calling it oldtown for now unless people generally want a different name
Could totally get away with doing themed districts in that as well, also I'm going to HIGHLY recommend, do not flatten the land its on, just build on it.
These older style towns were never built on perfectly level ground, at most it was just smoothed down.

Not every canton or district will be an older theme (think Glushenko) but I promise to try and preserve some of the natural elevations and whatnot.
this sounds funsies, i want in

i don't want any flattening at all, or minimal. even one of the buildings i already have there varies isn't flat at all
flattening just makes it shit - avoid it
if you want a flat base for a bigger building, make some smaller buildings and then put your big building on top of those

That... doesn't really work once you get past a certain threshold of size. Take Fulsy's stadium, he couldn't be building it if the land underneath wasn't relatively flat
Don't get me wrong I'm all for elevation variation but you can't just leave land alone entirely when building big, especially when it's rolling hills.
Look at San Fransisco. There are huuuuge elevation changes but most of the tall buildings and stadiums and whatnots are built around the same elevation on relatively flat land. It's the same way over here in Philly, and to an extreme, NYC.
Anyways, are you referring to your own district or all in general? I was referring to others in the forseeable future but if you're referring to your own I didn't plan on touching the land, as you had said you wanted it to be more naturally elevated.

So... Are you actually going to build anything that looks like those pictures, or is it going to be the same "old English"-themed garbage that everyone tries to build, and nobody can get right?
Because if you're going for this kind of theme, at least look over what other people have done, and try to replicate it, rather than building boxes with triangle hats.
For example:

If you're going to rally against modernism, you've got to give us something worth caring about. You can't half-ass it.

well i'm experimenting as i go along, it might be bad to start off with but it's better than a perfectly flat grid

well yeah that's the point. his stadium is so massive you can fit an entire city inside of it. this area to work with is even smaller than that, so building something thats massive will pretty much require you to flatten so much land that it ends up becoming the dominating feature
well i'm experimenting as i go along, it might be bad to start off with but it's better than a perfectly flat grid
Experiment in creative. Don't waste time and space doing it here.
Once you have something to be proud of, then build your little fantasy city, and knock our socks off.
Until you can establish a standard of quality, we're going to remain unconvinced and unimpressed.

well i want my mistakes out in the open - warts and all. i don't care if people think they can't build, i want them to fill up these area with their mistakes and see if we can make something of it
I'm going to strongly recommend against that. This stinks of arrogance and misguided ideology.
At least do your research. That's all we ask.
worth a shot i reckon

It's not as if anyone else wants to build something there. Not every part of every city is clean and perfect looking. There are the "poor areas" everywhere.
I wouldn't even mind a shanty district. :v:

Server looks nice, and really active; could you whitelist me?
ign is madihuana
Milkdairy and Scorpius, you can have the Elytras next time we're on at the same time.
Thanks Jammy for the elytra :buckteeth:
Hey Milkdairy, how long on average do you stay afk for your fishing machine?
I'm curious about how much strain it would put on things if I built one and went afk while I went to work, where I would be away for up to 12 to 13 hours :v:

I actually unexpectedly answered this question after I fell asleep while running it. Going from around 1:30 AM to 9:00 AM I was continually fishing with no real hunger loss or danger to myself. The only complication I encountered was that my two double chests that receive the fishing loot were full and had been overflowing for hours.
Tl;dr, as long as you're enclosed in glass in a well lit area, I Assume you can fish indefinitely. Just make sure to eat just in case.

I'll probably make like an 8 or 9 tiered double chest system once I get enough iron for hoppers then.

i suppose a way to expand on it
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/iKB1H4l.jpg[/img_thumb]
this sort of thing blends in with the land and makes the building feel more like it belongs there
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/b3CURSb.jpg[/img_thumb]
this sort of thing just makes the building look like it was shoved in there using worldedit
i created an mspaint picture to demonstrate
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/bhq5ujk.png[/img_thumb]
the "foundation" could be used for all manner of things in a town, such as buildings or even more decoration. even if you have no use or interest in that sort of thing, somebody else could always make use of it
i remember a really good example of this in chestnut town where somebody turned a floating villager farm into a house by hollowing it out and adding some walls to it
I'll probably make like an 8 or 9 tiered double chest system once I get enough iron for hoppers then.
I can give you some hoppers if you'd like, I have a good few of them from previous redstone contraptions, or I can just make you some.

I am sorry to say that unfortunately, the Le Merde Deux Hotel in Spawn has burnt down. Demolition will soon commence.
We think the concierge had something to do with it.

Make sure the water source block is visible to sky. Fish appear more frequently that way.
