A lot of mincerafting happened yesterday. Wuvs has returned, and by her suggestion, the underwater city/base is now called "Drown Town." All are welcome to come build stuff.
It also has a tree at its center.

And slimes? Apparently, deep oceans are deep enough to dip into slime chunk territory.

1 Duck lent me a bunch of sponges, and gave me a stack of leather for book-making. PERTINAX and Wuvs helped out with carving tunnels, and felling giant jungle trees while we were trying to grow one with the right height. Wuvs also contributed a metric crap-ton of stone, completely covering all of Drown Town's stone needs for the forseeable future. You guys are the best. <3
Had no idea trees could grow underwater. Was it enclosed first?

I think they just built a fake tree underwater by putting down log and leaf blocks.
Nope, trees will not grow through water. I had to build a roof and dry out a huge bubble under it, which took several hours.

How does that even work? How can a tree grow through water if there needs to be a barrier between the water and the sapling in order to plant the sapling in the first place? Wouldn't the tree be blocked by whatever's holding back the water?

Trees can grow through solid blocks and glass is considered transparent, which I suspect makes it even easier.
There even use to be a bug (sadly patched) where you could get onto the roof of the nether by growing a dark oak tree near the ceiling, which would grow through the bedrock and then simply mine it away to reach the surface.

Sorry, I typo'd. I meant that trees don't grow through water.
The ceiling was built not only to hold the water back, but also to keep the tree from growing too tall, because it could have grown completely out of the ocean (and, indeed, did exactly that at one point).
As for how a ceiling prevented water from flowing in from the side, that's basically magic. Let's just say that a lot of R&D went into figuring out how to do such things.
Scorpious, I might be wrong, but I believe the trees-growing-through-stuff shenanigans have been fixed.
Its kind of a shame that the islandcraft map didn't work out when Mojang's next update would have probably made it really interesting.

It seems we jumped the gun.
Really, it's a pity that the problem of oceans being super boring has gone unsolved for so long. I remember a mod that added corals and stuff that looked super cool back in the Beta 1.5 days. Heck, even the riverbed ocean floors with the dirt, sand, and clay were an improvement over the current gravel-ridden voids. I really wonder why it's taken them until now to do something about this.

I think I'm getting the hang of the enchantment system.

Made a new sword for the B O N E Z O N E. Don't run off with this, okay?
Is this server still active in any way? I've been chilling in Minecraft lately, but singleplayer feels lonely... do you folks still play on this server?
Yeah, not hugely busy but there are a few repeat players. Especially recently. :)
I've been meaning to get on; once I choose a college I should have more time
Ah screw it. May I get added to the whitelist? IGN: Misanthropix

free random garbage in spawn. no limit per person, just dont be greedy
Good to see this thread made it alive and well on newpunch
Am I still banned / unwhitelisted?
My forum name can finally have the # symbol Woohoo!
My only issue on the old forums was having the "The" in my name.
Fixed that as soon as newpunch debuted.
Everyone gets to improve their names, where as I lost my "II" at the end because of stupid character limits. Don't even get to have a space between my name
Earlier today I got disconnected from the server while playing, with the message "Server closed". When I came back, the signs in my base were gone. Is that a normal occurence?
The server restarts every 24 hours at about 3am my time. The map usually ends up reverting about a minute prior to restart for no particular reason.
If I'm right in saying it usually announces it is going to restart in 60seconds.
So when 1.13 comes out are we getting a map wipe? Ocean generation is completely revamped
No, I refuse to reset the map.
I'll probably just end up opening the second server again. Or expanding the map size. Or both.
Hey I remember this server, it's been years. How old is the current map being used?
Also could I get a whitelist? I wanna check it out. IGN: Adamhully.
Thanks.
This technically isn't the same server as you remember, but it is a continuation of it. The server came up as this thread began (February 2017) and the map is just as old.
*and the map is just great
